A novel biosensor for liquid phase determination of glutathione and amoxicillin in biological and pharmaceutical samples using a ZnO/CNTs nanocomposite/catechol derivative modified electrode

Copper-Catalyzed Domino-Double Annulation of o-Aminobenzamides with 2-Iodoisothiocyanates for the Synthesis of 12H-Benzo[4,5]thiazolo[2,3-b]quinazolin-12-ones

A facile and efficient copper-catalyzed domino-double annulation strategy was developed from easily accessible o-aminobenzamides and 2-iodoisothiocyanates, which affords a direct pathway for the synthesis of tetracyclic fused 12H-benzo[4,5]thiazolo[2,3-b]quinazolin-12-ones in moderate to good yields without the addition of ligands, bases, and external oxidants. The reaction involves a C-N bond cleavage and the formation of a C-N/C-S bond in one step with the advantages of using an inexpensive copper catalyst and easy operation. Mechanistic studies suggest that this transformation proceeds via intermolecular condensation of o-aminobenzamides with 2-iodoisothiocyanates, followed by an intramolecular Ullmann-type cross-coupling cyclization reaction.

New approaches in antibiotics detection: The use of square wave voltammetry

Antibiotics belongs to a class of pharmaceutical compounds widely used due to their effectiveness against bacterial infections. However, if consumed or inappropriately disposed of in the environment can results in environmental and public health problems, because they are considered emerging contaminants and their residues represent damage, whether in the long or short term, to different terrestrial ecosystems, in addition to bringing potential risks to agricultural sectors, such as livestock and fish farming. For this, the development of analytical methods for low-concentration detection and identification of antibiotics in natural waters, wastewaters, soil, foods, and biological fluids is necessary. This review shows the applicability of square wave voltammetry for the analytical determination of antibiotics from different chemical classes and covers a variety of samples and working electrodes that are used as voltammetric sensors. The review involved the analysis of scientific publications from the Science Direct® and Scopus® databases, with scientific manuscripts covering the period between January 2012 and May 2023. Various manuscripts were discussed indicating the applicability of square wave voltammetry in antibiotics detection in urine, blood, natural waters, milk, among other complex samples.

Preparation of a glassy carbon electrode modified with saffron conjugated silver nanoparticles for the sensitive and selective electroanalytical determination of amoxicillin in urine samples

Determination of antibiotics is crucial in order to assess their potential impacts on human health and the environment. This study aimed to develop a modified glassy carbon electrode with saffron conjugated silver nanoparticles for the determination of amoxicillin antibiotic in urine samples. The modified electrode was prepared by electrodeposition of silver nanoparticles on the electrode surface, followed by deposition of amoxicillin on the surface. The electrochemical behavior of the modified electrode was studied by cyclic voltammetry and square wave voltammetry. The results showed that the modified electrode exhibited enhanced electrocatalytic activity toward the oxidation of amoxicillin. The calibration curve was linear in the concentration range from 1.273 × 10-4 g L-1 to 2.217 × 10-3 g L-1, with a high linear correlation coefficient of 0.9998. The detection limit was determined to be 4.199 × 10-5 g L-1. The precision of the sensor was adequate, with relative standard deviations of 4.3% and 4.0% for AMX concentrations of 9.199 × 10-5 g L-1 and 1.194 × 10-4 g L-1, respectively. The modified electrode was then applied to the determination of amoxicillin in urine samples. The method showed linearity over the amoxicillin concentration range from 0.00 to 2.00 × 10-4 g L-1, with a detection limit of 9.739 × 10-6 g L-1, indicating the potential of the modified electrode for the determination of amoxicillin in biological samples. Overall, the modified glassy carbon electrode with silver nanoparticles showed very promising results for the sensitive and selective determination of amoxicillin in urine samples.

Bioinspired thiazolo-[2,3-b] quinazolin-6-one derivatives as potent anti-cancer agents targeting EGFR: their biological evaluations and in silico assessment

Cancer is a challenging and second most deadly disease. The epidermal growth factor receptors (EGFRs) dimerize upon ligand bindings to the extracellular domain that intiates the downstream signaling cascades and activates intracellular kinase domain. Thus, activation of autophosphrylation through kinase domain results in metastasis, cell proliferation, and angiogenesis. In this study, we unravel the binding mechanism of newly synthesized thiazolo-[2,3-b] quinazolin-6-one and evaluate their anti-cancer activity against ovary and prostate carcinoma cell lines (OVCAR-3 and PC-3). Synthesized molecules exhibited promising anti-cancer activity against OVCAR-3 and PC-3 carcinoma cell lines with inhibitory concentrations ranging from 13.4 ± 0.43 to 23.6 ± 1.22 μM and 7.5 ± 0.62 to 67.5 ± 1.24 μM, respectively. These compounds induced apoptosis and resulted in cell cycle arrest at G1 and G2/M transition phases. Next, the nude mice models were taken to investigate the toxicity of the 4bi compound, and in vivo investigations revealed no effects upon examined organs (liver and kidney) treated at different concentrations. Moreover, the combined in silico approaches, molecular docking, molecular dynamics simulations, and MM/PBSA methods were performed to assess the binding affinity and stability of bioinspired synthesized congeners with the epidermal growth factor receptor tyrosine kinase (EGFR-TK). The free binding energy (ΔG_bind) of the 4bi molecule was found comparable to Erlotinib drug. The test molecule could be competent for further usage to determine its efficicacy in cancer therapeutics.

Electrochemical monitoring of 4-chlorophenol as a water pollutant via carbon paste electrode amplified with Fe3O4 incorporated cellulose nanofibers (CNF)

A crucial problem that needs to be resolved is the sensitive and selective monitoring of chlorophenol compounds, especifically 4-chlorophenol (4-CP), one of the most frequently used organic industrial chemicals. In light of this, the goal of this study was to synthesize Fe₃O₄ incorporated cellulose nanofiber composite (Fe₃O₄/CNF) as an amplifier in the development of a modified carbon paste electrode (CPE) for 4-CP detection. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was used to evaluate the morphology of the synthesized nanocatalyst, while differential pulse voltammetry (DPV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) techniques were implemented to illuminate the electrochemical characteristics of the fabricated sensor. The ultimate electrochemical sensor (Fe₃O₄/CNF/CPE) was used as a potent electrochemical sensor for monitoring 4-CP in the concentration range of 1.0 nM-170 μM with a limit of detection value of 0.5 nM. As a result of optimization studies, 8.0 mg Fe₃O₄/CNF was found to be the ideal catalyst concentration, whereas pH = 6.0 was chosen as the ideal pH. The 4-CP's oxidation current was found to be over 1.67 times greater at ideal operating conditions than it was at the surface of bare CPE, and its oxidation potential decreased by about 120 mV. By using the standard addition procedure on samples of drinking water and wastewater, the suggested capability of Fe₃O₄/CNF/CPE to detect 4-CP was further investigated. The recovery range was found to be 98.52-103.66%. This study paves the way for the customization of advanced nanostructure for the application in electrochemical sensors resulting in beneficial environmental impact and enhancing human health.

Customization of surface wettability of nano-SiO2 by coating Trimethoxy(vinyl)silane modifier for oil-water separation: Fabrication of metal-based functional superwetting nanomaterial, characterizations and performance evaluation

The wettability of nano-SiO₂ surface was transformed from the inherent hydrophilicity to functional superhyderophobicity by coating Trimethoxy (vinyl)silane modifier, and the resultant surface showed contrasting wettability for water and oil (Superhydrophobic and Superoleophilic), which is a desired characteristic for the membranes used in oil-water separation. Initially Trimethoxy (vinyl)silane coated SiO₂ nanoparticles (TMVS@SiO₂) were synthesized by hydrolysis and poly-condensation reactions, and this nano dispersion was spray coated on the annealed stainless-steel mesh surface, whose resulting hierarchical surface texture brought about the desired wettability, with the water-surface-air (θ_WA) and oil-surface-air (θ_OA) interfacial contact angles of 150° and 0° respectively. In addition to the wettability studies (contact angles), FTIR, morphological, and elemental characterizations of the TMVS@SiO₂ coated surfaces were carried out to understand the alterations that have taken place on the TMVS@SiO₂ surface that in turn rendered superhydrophobicity and superoleophilicity to the surface. The FTIR absorption peaks indicate that after modifying SiO₂ with TMVS, the -OH groups on SiO₂ surface are clearly replaced by -CH₃. The morphological studies indicated that modification of SiO₂ leads to better cross-linking between coating composition and nanoparticles and EDS spectra and elemental mapping of the modified surface showed the presence of Si, O and C elements. Finally, this surface was tested for its efficiency and stability as a membrane in the process of separating oil and water from the oily water using gravity driven method. The oil-water separation efficiency was estimated to be 99% for this membrane and also it was found to be quite stable as the surface effectively retained this oil-water separation efficiency even after 10 cycles of separation process.

Application of Solid-state Electrochemical Analysis in Ancient Ceramic Identification and Characterization: A Review

Background:

Ceramics can reflect ancient technology and art, therefore, it has a very important position in archaeology. However, it is far from enough just to study the shape of pottery and porcelain. It is necessary to use advanced scientific and technological means to conduct a comprehensive analysis of pottery and porcelain, so as to study the information hidden deep in the remains of ceramic objects.

Methods:

The solid voltammetric method can be used to obtain information about the composition of materials used in ancient ceramics. This new method can be applied to insoluble solids for example, providing qualitative and quantitative information and structural information with little soluble solids. The method requires only ng-μg sample.

Results:

In this review, we first describe the development of solid-state voltammetric method and our work in this field. Then, we describe in detail the application of this method in archaeology, especially in the analysis of ceramics. Finally, we describe the analytical applications of other electrochemical techniques for ceramics analysis.

Conclusion:

Due to the low demand for samples and the high-cost performance of analytical instruments, this method has been widely studied in Europe. To sum up, we propose to establish a microsampling method for ancient ceramics. A new method for the protection of fine ancient ceramics by the suitable carrier and the fixation on the surface of the electrode. These improvements can enable solid-state electroanalytical chemistry technology to achieve more comprehensive and accurate quantitative analysis of ancient ceramics particles. We also propose the current challenges and future directions of solid-state electroanalytical chemistry.

Recent Advantages of Mediator Based Chemically Modified Electrodes; Powerful Approach in Electroanalytical Chemistry

Background:

Modified electrodes have advanced from the initial studies aimed at understanding electron transfer in films to applications in areas such as energy production and analytical chemistry. This review emphasizes the major classes of modified electrodes with mediators that are being explored for improving analytical methodology. Chemically modified electrodes (CMEs) have been widely used to counter the problems of poor sensitivity and selectivity faced in bare electrodes. We have briefly reviewed the organometallic and organic mediators that have been extensively employed to engineer adapted electrode surfaces for the detection of different compounds. Also, the characteristics of the materials that improve the electrocatalytic activity of the modified surfaces are discussed.

Objective:

Improvement and promotion of pragmatic CMEs have generated a diversity of novel and probable strong detection prospects for electroanalysis. While the capability of handling the chemical nature of the electrode/solution interface accurately and creatively increases , it is predictable that different mediators-based CMEs could be developed with electrocatalytic activity and completely new applications be advanced.

Properties and Recent Advantages of N,N’-dialkylimidazolium-ion Liquids Application in Electrochemistry

N,Nʹ-dialkylimidazolium-ion liquids is one of the important ionic liquids with a wide range of application as conductive electrolyte and in electrochemistry. The modified electrodes create a new view in fabrication of electroanalytical sensors. Many modifiers have beeen suggested for modification of electroanalytical sensor since many years ago. Over these years, ionic liquids and especially room temperature ionic liquids have attracted more attention due to their wide range of electrochemical windows and high electrical conductivity. N,Nʹ-dialkylimidazolium-ion liquids are one of the main important ionic liquids suggested for modification of bare electrodes and especially carbon paste electrodes. Although many review articles have reported onthe use of ionic liquids in electrochemical sensors, no review article has been specifically introduced so far on the review of the advantages of N,Nʹ-dialkylimidazolium ionic liquid. Therefore, in this review paper we focused on the introduction of recent advantages of N,Nʹ-dialkyl imidazolium ionic liquid in electrochemistry.

A new class of fluorogenic thiazolo[2,3-b]quinazolinone receptor: selective detection towards mercury and hydrogen bisulfate ions in aqueous medium

A series of fluorophoric and structurally diverse thiazoloquinazoline derivatives were synthesized in a one-pot multicomponent cascade reaction using a microwave irradiation technique. The unique structural arrangement of the synthesized compounds encouraged us to design a new type of bioactive molecular receptor. This receptor interacts with HSO₄⁻ in 1 : 1 and Hg²⁺ in 1 : 2 binding stoichiometric ratios resulting in a change in fluorescence as well as absorption spectra in aqueous medium. The ion bonded receptor complex possibly enhances the fluorescence signal of the receptor via H-bonded complex formation with HSO₄⁻ ions and co-ordinate complex formation with Hg²⁺ ions.

Fluorophoric thiazoloquinazoline derivatives were synthesized under microwave assisted one-pot three-component cascade reaction. Owing to their unique structural arrangement, a new bioactive molecular receptor was developed for HSO⁴⁻ and Hg²⁺ ions.

A label-free electrochemical biosensor based on 3D cubic Eu3+/Cu2O nanostructures with clover-like faces for the determination of anticancer drug cytarabine

The present research utilized a simplified procedure for developing a novel electro-chemical DNA biosensor based on a carbon paste electrode (CPE) modified with three-dimensional (3D) cubic Eu³⁺/Cu₂O nanostructures with clover-like faces (Eu³⁺/Cu₂O CLFNs). The modified electrode was applied to monitor electro-chemical interactions between dsDNA and cytarabine for the first time. Then, the decreased oxidation signal of guanine following the interactions between cytarabine and dsDNA was utilized as an indicator for selectively determining cytarabine using differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). According to the findings, the oxidation peak current of guanine was linearly proportionate with the cytarabine concentration in the range between 0.01 and 90 μM. Additionally, the limit of quantification (LOQ) and the limit of detection (LOD) respectively equaled 9.4 nM and 2.8 nM. In addition, the repeatability, applicability and reproducibility of this analysis to drug dosage forms and human serum samples were investigated. Furthermore, UV-vis spectroscopy, DPV, docking and viscosity measurements were applied to elucidate the interaction mechanism of dsDNA with cytarabine. It was found that this DNA biosensor may be utilized to sensitively, accurately and rapidly determine cytarabine.

Recent advances in ZnO nanostructure-based electrochemical sensors and biosensors

Nanostructured metal oxides, such as zinc oxide (ZnO), are considered as excellent materials for the fabrication of highly sensitive and selective electrochemical sensors and biosensors due to their good properties, including a high specific surface area, high catalytic efficiency, strong adsorption ability, high isoelectric point (IEP, 9.5), wide band gap (3.2 eV), biocompatibility and high electron communication features. Thus, ZnO nanostructures are widely used to fabricate efficient electrochemical sensors and biosensors for the detection of various analytes. In this review, we have discussed the synthesis of ZnO nanostructures and the advances in various ZnO nanostructure-based electrochemical sensors and biosensors for medical diagnosis, pharmaceutical analysis, food safety, and environmental pollution monitoring.

The Comparison between Magnetite Nanoparticles Co-Precipitated by Different Bases and Their Effects on Human Cells

The superparamagnetic magnetite nanoparticles were synthesized through co-precipitation method by using a strong base such as sodium hydroxide or a weak base such as ammonium hydroxide. The magnetite co-precipitated by ammonium hydroxide (MA) has different properties than the magnetite co-precipitated by sodium hydroxide (MS). The cytotoxicity effects of MA and MS on the breast cancer cells and normal hepatocytes cells were studied. The magnetite nanoparticles with two ways were characterized by using Vibrating Sample Magnetometer. X-ray fluorescence, Dynamic Light Scattering, Zeta Potential, pH changes, Wide-angle X-ray Diffraction, Fourier Transforms Infrared spectroscopy, MTT assay test and High-Resolution Transmission electron microscopy. The results showed that the final pH of MA and MS were 5 and 7.5, respectively. MA nanoparticles have salts which act as weak oxidizing agent and they were exposed to oxidation at high temperature and lost their magnetic property. They have a cytotoxic effect against breast cancer cells and normal hepatocytes cells more than the MS.

Development and validation of voltammetric method for determination of amoxicillin in river water

Amoxicillin is an antibiotic that can accumulate in aquatic environments and lead to the development of resistant bacteria; thus, its determination is of great importance. In this study, a glassy carbon electrode modified with reduced graphene oxide and Nafion was used as a sensor in a square-wave voltammetry method for determination of amoxicillin in river water samples from Guarapuava city, Brazil. The method was validated, using parameters and statistical tools recommended by the validation guidelines, in the range of 1.8-5.4 μmol L^-1 (r = 0.922 and R² = 85.1%). The analytical curve was constructed using external standard calibration in pure electrolyte, since the matrix effect was not significant. Results of linear regression analysis, lack of fit test and analysis of the residual plots pointed that the linear regression was significant, without lack of fit of linear model and that the variances had homoscedastic distribution. Both coefficients of regression curve were significant and, thus, they were included in the regression equation: Response = 7.0 + 3.5C_AMX. The limits of detection and quantification were 0.36 and 1.2 μmol L^-1, respectively. The method was selective towards interferents such as humic acids and benzylpenicillin. The relative standard deviations for repeatability and intermediate precision were adequate according to the limits established in literature. The mean recoveries were statistically equal to those obtained through a comparative chromatography method, so, the accuracy of the method was also adequate. Therefore, the method can be applied to the voltammetric determination of amoxicillin in river water, affording reliable and consistent measurements.

Recent advances in electrochemical sensors for amoxicillin detection in biological and environmental samples

Amoxicillin (AMX) is among the most successful antibiotics used for human therapy. It is used extensively to prevent or treat bacterial infections in humans and animals. However, the widespread distribution and excess utilization of AMX can be an environmental and health risk due to the hazardous potential associated to its pharmaceutical industries effluents. Besides, their extensive use in food animal production may result in some undesirable residues in food, e.g. meat, eggs and milk. Consequently, at high enough concentrations in biological fluids, AMX may be responsible of various diseases such as nausea, vomiting, rashes, and antibiotic-associated colitis. For this reason, the detection and quantification of amoxicillin in pharmaceuticals, biological fluids, environmental samples and foodstuffs require new electroanalytical techniques with sensitive and rapid measurement abilities. This review discusses recent advances in the development of electrochemical sensors and bio-sensors for AMX analysis in complex matrices such as pharmaceuticals, biological fluids, environmental water and foodstuffs. The main electrochemical sensors used are based on chemically modified electrodes involving carbon materials and nanomaterials, nanoparticles, polymers and biological recognition molecules.

Tandem Copper-Catalyzed Regioselective N-Arylation-Aza-Michael Addition: Synthesis of Tetracyclic 5H-Benzothiazolo[3,2-a]quinazoline Derivatives

A copper-catalyzed tandem process integrating regioselective N-arylation, followed by aza-Michael addition, is disclosed using 2-aminobenzothiazoles and ortho-halo cinnamic acid congeners. This process generated diverse tetracyclic 5H-benzothiazolo[3,2-a]quinazoline derivatives in moderate to good yields. The present tandem reaction appears to proceed through concomitant ring opening of 2-aminobenzothiazole and S-arylation to give the ortho-cyanamide-substituted diaryl thioether intermediate. The thus generated intermediate likely undergoes an unprecedented Truce-Smiles-type rearrangement involving S- to N-aryl migration, followed by reformation of the thiazole ring and intramolecular aza-Michael addition to furnish the title products.

The construction of fluorophoric thiazolo-[2,3-b]quinazolinone derivatives: a multicomponent domino synthetic approach

Acid-mediated one-pot domino reactions of substituted 2-amino thiazoles, substituted benzaldehydes and cyclic diketones have been developed for the synthesis of novel and architecturally unique thiazolo[2,3-b]quinazolinone derivatives under microwave irradiation. In this protocol, a series of thiazolo[2,3-b]quinazolinone derivatives have been synthesized and the excellent fluorescence behaviors of some of the molecules have been reported based on the incorporation of different electron-donating and electron-withdrawing substituents on the aryl moieties of the target molecules.

A library of unique fluorophoric thiazolo[2,3-b]quinazolinones were synthesized under acid catalyzed one pot microwave irradiation technique.

Electrochemical Sensors, a Bright Future in the Fabrication of Portable Kits in Analytical Systems

Analysis of food, pharmaceutical, and environmental compounds is an inevitable issue to evaluate quality of the compounds used in human life. Quality of drinking water, food products, and pharmaceutical compounds is directly associated with human health. Presence of forbidden additives in food products, toxic compounds in water samples and drugs with low quality lead to important problems for human health. Therefore, attention to analytical strategy for investigation of quality of food, pharmaceutical, and environmental compounds and monitoring presence of forbidden compounds in materials used by humans has increased in recent years. Analytical methods help to identify and quantify both permissible and unauthorized compounds present in the materials used in human daily life. Among analytical methods, electrochemical methods have been shown to have more advantages compared to other analytical methods due to their portability and low cost. Most of big companies have applied this type of analytical methods because of their fast and selective analysis. Due to simple operation and high diversity of electroanalytical sensors, these types of sensors are expected to be the future generation of analytical systems. Therefore, many scientists and researchers have focused on designing and fabrication of electroanalytical sensors with good selectivity and high sensitivity for different types of compounds such as drugs, food, and environmental pollutants. In this paper, we described the mechanism and different examples of DNA, enzymatic and electro-catalytic methods for electroanalytical determination of drug, food and environmental compounds.

Carbon Paste Modified Electrode as Powerful Sensor Approach Determination of Food Contaminants, Drug Ingredients, and Environmental Pollutants: A Review

Background:

Application of electrochemical sensors for analysis of food, biological and water polluting compounds helps to speed up their analysis in the real samples. Electrochemical sensors with low cost, fast response and portable ability are a better choice compared to traditional methods for analysis of electro-active compounds such as HPLC. Therefore, in recent years, many analytical scientists have suggested this type of analytical method for analysis of food, biological compounds and water pollutants.

Objective:

Due to low cost, easy modification and low non-faradic current, the carbon paste electrode is a suitable choice as a working electrode in the electrochemical and especially voltammetric analysis. On the other hand, modification of carbon paste electrode can improve the quality of the sensor for the analysis of electroactive compounds at nanomolar level.

Biosensors in Drug Discovery and Drug Analysis

Background:

The determination of drugs in pharmaceutical formulations and human biologic fluids is important for pharmaceutical and medical sciences. Successful analysis requires low sensitivity, high selectivity and minimum interference effects. Current analytical methods can detect drugs at very low levels but these methods require long sample preparation steps, extraction prior to analysis, highly trained technical staff and high-cost instruments. Biosensors offer several advantages such as short analysis time, high sensitivity, real-time analysis, low-cost instruments, and short pretreatment steps over traditional techniques. Biosensors allow quantification not only of the active component in pharmaceutical formulations, but also the degradation products and metabolites in biological fluids. The present review gives comprehensive information on the application of biosensors for drug discovery and analysis. Moreover, this review focuses on the fabrication of these biosensors.

Methods:

Biosensors can be classified as the utilized bioreceptor and the signal transduction mechanism. The classification based on signal transductions includes electrochemical optical, thermal or acoustic. Electrochemical and optic transducers are mostly utilized transducers used for drug analysis. There are many biological recognition elements, such as enzymes, antibodies, cells that have been used in fabricating of biosensors. Aptamers and antibodies are the most widely used recognition elements for the screening of the drugs. Electrochemical sensors and biosensors have several advantages such as low detection limits, a wide linear response range, good stability and reproducibility. Optical biosensors have several advantages such as direct, real-time and label-free detection of many biological and chemical substances, high specificity, sensitivity, small size and low cost. Modified electrodes enhance sensitivity of the electrodes to develop a new biosensor with desired features. Chemically modified electrodes have gained attention in drug analysis owing to low background current, wide potential window range, simple surface renewal, low detection limit and low cost. Modified electrodes produced by modifying of a solid surface electrode via different materials (carbonaceous materials, metal nanoparticles, polymer, biomolecules) immobilization. Recent advances in nanotechnology offer opportunities to design and construct biosensors. Unique features of nanomaterials provide many advantages in the fabrication of biosensors. Nanomaterials have controllable chemical structures, large surface to volume ratios, functional groups on their surface. To develop proteininorganic hybrid nanomaterials, four preparation methods have been used. These methods are immobilization, conjugation, crosslinking and self-assembly. In the present manuscript, applications of different biosensors, fabricated by using several materials, for drug analysis are reviewed. The biosensing strategies are investigated and discussed in detail.

Results:

Several analytical techniques such as chromatography, spectroscopy, radiometry, immunoassays and electrochemistry have been used for drug analysis and quantification. Methods based on chromatography require timeconsuming procedure, long sample-preparation steps, expensive instruments and trained staff. Compared to chromatographic methods, immunoassays have simple protocols and lower cost. Electrochemical measurements have many advantages over traditional chemical analyses and give information about drug quantity, metabolic fate of drugs, and pharmacological activity. Moreover, the electroanalytical methods are useful to determine drugs sensitively and selectivity. Additionally, these methods decrease analysis cost and require low-cost instruments and simple sample pretreatment steps.

Conclusion:

In recent years, drug analyses are performed using traditional techniques. These techniques have a good detection limit, but they have some limitations such as long analysis time, expensive device and experienced personnel requirement. Increased demand for practical and low-cost analytical techniques biosensor has gained interest for drug determinations in medical sciences. Biosensors are unique and successful devices when compared to traditional techniques. For drug determination, different electrode modification materials and different biorecognition elements are used for biosensor construction. Several biosensor construction strategies have been developed to enhance the biosensor performance. With the considerable progress in electrode surface modification, promotes the selectivity of the biosensor, decreases the production cost and provides miniaturization. In the next years, advances in technology will provide low cost, sensitive, selective biosensors for drug analysis in drug formulations and biological samples.

ZnO-based nanostructured electrodes for electrochemical sensors and biosensors in biomedical applications

Fascinating properties of ZnO nanostructures have created much interest due to their importance in health care and environmental monitoring. Current worldwide production and their wide range of applications signify ZnO to be a representative of multi-functional oxide material. Recent nanotechnological developments have stimulated the production of various forms of ZnO nanostructures such as nano-layers, nanoparticles, nanowires, etc. Due to their enhanced sensing properties, improved binding ability with biomolecules as well as biological activities have enabled them as suitable candidates for the fabrication of biosensor devices in the biomedical arena. In this review, the synthesis of ZnO nanostructures, mechanism of their interaction with biomolecules and their applications as sensors in health care area are discussed considering the biosensors for molecules with small molecular weight, infectious diseases, and pharmaceutical compounds.

Overview and recent advances in electrochemical sensing of glutathione - A review

The present paper is aimed at providing an overview of the recent advances in the electrochemical sensing of glutathione (GSH), an important electrochemically and biologically active molecule, for the period 2012-2018. Herein, the analytical performances of newly developed electrochemical methods, procedures and protocols for GSH sensing are comprehensively and critically discussed with respect to the type of method, electrodes used (new electrode modifications, advanced materials and formats), sample matrices, and basic validation parameters obtained (limit of detection, linear dynamic range, precision, selectivity/evaluation of interferences). This paper considers electrochemical methods used alone as well as the hyphenated methods with electrochemical detection (ECD), such as HPLC-ECD or CE-ECD. The practical applicability of the platforms developed for GSH detection and quantification is mostly focused on pharmaceutical and biomedical analysis. The most significant electrochemical approaches for GSH detection in multicomponent analyte samples and multicomponent matrices and for real-time in vivo GSH analysis are highlighted. The great variability in the electrochemical techniques, electrode approaches, and obtainable performance parameters, discussed in this review, brought new insights not only on current GSH and glutathione disulfide (GSSG) determinations, but, along with this, on the advances in electrochemical analysis from a more general point of view.

Validated electrochemical and chromatographic quantifications of some antibiotic residues in pharmaceutical industrial waste water

Realistic implementation of ion selective electrodes (ISEs) into environmental monitoring programs has always been a challenging task. This could be largely attributed to difficulties in validation of ISE assay results. In this study, the electrochemical response of amoxicillin trihydrate (AMX), ciprofloxacin hydrochloride (CPLX), trimethoprim (TMP), and norfloxacin (NFLX) was studied by the fabrication of sensitive membrane electrodes belonging to two types of ISEs, which are polyvinyl chloride (PVC) membrane electrodes and glassy carbon (GC) electrodes. Linear response for the membrane electrodes was in the concentration range of 10^-5-10^-2 mol/L. For the PVC membrane electrodes, Nernstian slopes of 55.1, 56.5, 56.5, and 54.0 mV/decade were achieved over a pH 4-8 for AMX, CPLX, and NFLX, respectively, and pH 3-6 for TMP. On the other hand, for GC electrodes, Nernstian slopes of 59.1, 58.2, 57.0, and 58.2 mV/decade were achieved over pH 4-8 for AMX, CPLX, and NFLX, respectively, and pH 3-6 for TMP. In addition to assay validation to international industry standards, the fabricated electrodes were also cross-validated relative to conventional separation techniques; high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), and thin layer chromatography (TLC)-densitometry. The HPLC assay was applied in concentration range of 0.5-10.0 μg/mL, for all target analytes. The TLC-densitometry was adopted over a concentration range of 0.3-1.0 μg/band, for AMX, and 0.1-0.9 μg/band, for CPLX, NFLX, and TMP. The proposed techniques were successfully applied for quantification of the selected drugs either in pure form or waste water samples obtained from pharmaceutical plants. The actual waste water samples were subjected to solid phase extraction (SPE) for pretreatment prior to the application of chromatographic techniques (HPLC and TLC-densitometry). On the other hand, the fabricated electrodes were successfully applied for quantification of the antibiotic residues in actual waste water samples without any pretreatment. This finding assures the suitability of the fabricated ISEs for environmental analysis.

A concise construction of 12H-benzo[4,5]thiazolo[2,3-b]quinazolin-12-ones via an unusual TBHP/Na2CO3 promoted cascade oxidative cyclization and interrupted Dimroth rearrangement

An interrupted Dimroth rearrangement was merged into the oxidative cyclization between isatins and 2-haloaryl isothiocyanates, giving 12H-benzo[4,5]thiazolo[2,3-b]quinazolin-12-one derivatives.
