Abstract
The Python-based program Protex was initially developed for simulating proton transfers in a pure protic ionic liquid via polarizable molecular dynamics simulations. This method employs a single topology approach wherein deprotonated species retain a dummy atom, which is transformed into a real hydrogen atom during the protonation process. In this work, we extended Protex to include more intricate systems and to facilitate the simulation of the Grotthuss mechanism to enhance alignment with the empirical findings. The handling of proton transfer events within Protex was further refined for increased flexibility. In the original model, each deprotonated molecule contained a single dummy atom connected to the hydrogen acceptor atom. This model posed limitations for molecules with multiple atoms that could undergo protonation. To mitigate this issue, Protex was extended to execute a proton transfer when one of these potential atoms was within a suitable proximity for the transfer event. For the purpose of maintaining simplicity, Protex continues to utilize only a single dummy atom per deprotonated molecule. Another new feature pertains to the determination of the eligibility for a proton transfer event. A range of acceptable distances can now be defined within which the transfer probability is gradually turned off. These modifications allow for a more nuanced approach to simulating proton transfer events, offering greater accuracy and control of the modeling process.

Influence of Metal Salts Addition on Physical and Electrochemical Properties of Ethyl and Propylammonium Nitrate. Int J Mol Sci 2022; 23:ijms232416040. Abstract
In this work, we deepen in the characterization of two protic ionic liquids (PILs), ethylammonium nitrate (EAN) and propylammonium nitrate (PAN). With this aim, we determined the influence of inorganic nitrate salts addition on their physical properties and their electrochemical potential window (EPW). Thus, experimental measurements of electrical conductivity, density, viscosity, refractive index and surface tension of mixtures of {EAN or PAN + LiNO3, Ca(NO3)2, Mg(NO3)2 or Al(NO3)3} at a temperature range between 5 and 95 °C are presented first, except for the last two properties which were measured at 25 °C. In the second part, the corresponding EPWs were determined at 25 °C by linear sweep voltammetry using three different electrochemical cells. Effect of the salt addition was associated mainly with the metal cation characteristics, so, generally, LiNO3 showed the lower influence, followed by Ca(NO3)2, Mg(NO3)2 or Al(NO3)3. The results obtained for the EAN + LiNO3 mixtures, along with those from a previous work, allowed us to develop novel predictive equations for most of the presented physical properties as functions of the lithium salt concentration, the temperature and the water content. Electrochemical results showed that a general order of EPW can be established for both PILs, although exceptions related to measurement conditions and the properties of the mixtures were found.

Abstract
In recent times, ionic liquid-based (ILs) electrolytic system has emerged as suitable alternative to the conventional organic solvent-based electrolytic system. However, since, anion of ILs is known to form aggregates in the presence of lithium-ions (Li+), and this can influence the transport properties of Li+ ion in a significant manner, it is, therefore, important to understand how lithium-ions influence the structure and dynamics of ILs. With this objective, in the present study, intermolecular interaction, structural organization, and dynamics of monocationic ILs (MILs) and dicationic IL (DIL) have been studied in the absence and presence of lithium salt. Specifically, for this purpose, two MILs, 1-methyl-3-propylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([C3C1im][NTf2]), 1-hexyl-3-propylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([C6C1im][NTf2]), and a DIL, 1,6-bis(3-methylimidazolium-1-yl)hexane bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide ([C6(mim)2][NTf2]2) have been chosen in such a way that either the alkyl chain of MILs becomes equal or half of the spacer chain length of DIL. To understand the effect of the addition of lithium-ion on the structural organization of MILs and DIL, steady-state absorption and fluorescence spectroscopies, time-resolved fluorescence anisotropy and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques have been used. Structural organization in the apolar and polar domains of ILs has been probed by following the rotational diffusion of suitably chosen solute in the concerned media through time-resolved fluorescence anisotropy (TRFA) measurements. TRFA studies have revealed that with the addition of Li+ ion, coordination between the Li+ ions and anions of MILs and DILs takes place in the ionic region leading to a change in the structural organization of the apolar regions of the respective medium. In fact, upon adding lithium-ions, a reduction in the packing of alkyl chains has also been observed for the MILs. However, not much change in the structural organization of the apolar region of the DIL has been observed when Li+ ion is added to it. In the presence of Li+ ions, a similar trend in the change of structural organization of polar regions for both MILs and DIL has been observed. Further, measurements of the self-diffusion coefficient through NMR have also supported the observation that Li+ ion also perturbs the nanostructural organization of the MIL in a significant manner than that it does for the DIL. The behavior of DIL in the presence of Li+ ion, as revealed by the present study, has been rationalized by considering the folded arrangement of DIL in the fluid-structure. Essentially, all of these investigations have suggested that the addition of lithium-ion significantly alters the microscopic behavior of MILs in comparison to that of DIL. The outcome of this study is expected to be helpful in realizing the potentials of these media as electrolytes in battery applications.

Abstract
High-temperature molten salt research is undergoing somewhat of a renaissance these days due to the apparent advantage of these systems in areas related to clean and sustainable energy harvesting and transfer. In many ways, this is a mature field with decades if not already a century of outstanding work devoted to it. Yet, much of this work was done with pioneering experimental and computational setups that lack the current day capabilities of synchrotrons and high-performance-computing systems resulting in deeply entrenched results in the literature that when carefully inspected may require revision. Yet, in other cases, access to isotopically substituted ions make those pioneering studies very unique and prohibitively expensive to carry out nowadays. There are many review articles on molten salts, some of them cited in this perspective, that are simply outstanding and we dare not try to outdo those. Instead, having worked for almost a couple of decades already on their low-temperature relatives, the ionic liquids, this is the perspective article that some of the authors would have wanted to read when embarking on their research journey on high-temperature molten salts. We hope that this will serve as a simple guide to those expanding from research on ionic liquids to molten salts and vice versa, particularly, when looking into their bulk structural features. The article does not aim at being comprehensive but instead focuses on selected topics such as short- and intermediate-range order, the constraints on force field requirements, and other details that make the high- and low-temperature ionic melts in some ways similar but in others diametrically opposite.

Abstract
Classical molecular dynamics simulations were used to investigate the structural and dynamical properties of the mixtures of ionic liquids (ILs) with the conjugate forms of the cation in a 1:1 molar ratio. The experimental studies suggested the combination of ethanolamines and ILs as novel absorbents for acidic gases such as CO2 and H2S, which provide the advantage of efficient absorption of gases at low pressures. However, the microscopic properties of the ionic mixtures are not studied. From our computational investigations, the densities of mixtures are reported and compared with the experimental results. The structural evolution of mixtures is reported by radial distribution functions, coordination numbers, void analysis, and spatial distribution functions. The mixtures' dynamic properties were studied by analyzing the hydrogen bond, ion-pair, and ion-cage lifetimes of the system. Monoethanolammonium and triethanolammonium ILs show different types of spatial distribution functions. The cations have lesser effect on dynamics compared with anions. The charge on the anion greatly affects the dynamics of mixtures. The dianion mixtures show slower dynamics than the monoanionic mixtures. The hydrogen bonding between cations and anions is stronger than that between cations and neutral molecules due to strong coulombic attractive forces. The cations spend more time around the dianions as compared to monoanions. The distributions of voids show that the void sizes are smaller in triethanolamine-based mixtures. The sulfobenzoate-based mixtures show voids smaller than those of pyridine-3-carboxylate-based mixtures due to more available free space between the entities, which facilitates the overall dynamics.

Abstract
Ionic liquids (ILs) are a special category of molten salts solely composed of ions with varied molecular symmetry and charge delocalization. The versatility in combining varied cation-anion moieties and in functionalizing ions with different atoms and molecular groups contributes to their peculiar interactions ranging from weak isotropic associations to strong, specific, and anisotropic forces. A delicate interplay among intra- and intermolecular interactions facilitates the formation of heterogeneous microstructures and liquid morphologies, which further contributes to their striking dynamical properties. Microstructural and dynamical heterogeneities of ILs lead to their multifaceted properties described by an inherent designer feature, which makes ILs important candidates for novel solvents, electrolytes, and functional materials in academia and industrial applications. Due to a massive number of combinations of ion pairs with ion species having distinct molecular structures and IL mixtures containing varied molecular solvents, a comprehensive understanding of their hierarchical structural and dynamical quantities is of great significance for a rational selection of ILs with appropriate properties and thereafter advancing their macroscopic functionalities in applications. In this review, we comprehensively trace recent advances in understanding delicate interplay of strong and weak interactions that underpin their complex phase behaviors with a particular emphasis on understanding heterogeneous microstructures and dynamics of ILs in bulk liquids, in mixtures with cosolvents, and in interfacial regions.

Abstract
We investigate the effect of adding different molecular cosolvents, water or imidazole, to the protic ionic liquid 1-ethylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide, i.e., [C2HIm][TFSI]. We explore how the added cosolvent distributes within the ionic liquid by means of molecular dynamics simulations and X-ray scattering. We also analyze the degree of short-range heterogeneity in the resulting mixtures, finding that while imidazole easily mixes with the protic ionic liquid, water tends to form small clusters in its own water-rich domains. These differences are rationalized by invoking the nature of intermolecular interactions. In aqueous mixtures water-water hydrogen bonds are more likely to form than water-ion hydrogen bonds (water-TFSI bonds being particularly weak), while imidazole can interact with both cations and anions. Hence, the cation-anion association is negligibly influenced by the presence of water, whereas the addition of imidazole creates solvent-separated ion pairs and is thus able to also increase the ionicity. As a consequence of these structural and interactional features, transport properties like self-diffusion and ionic conductivity also show different composition dependencies. While the mobility of both ions and solvent is increased considerably by the addition of water, upon adding imidazole this property changes significantly only for molar fractions of imidazole above 0.6. At these molar fractions, which correspond to a base-excess composition, the imidazole/[C2HIm][TFSI] mixture behaves as a glass-forming liquid with suppressed phase transitions, while homomixtures such as imidazole/[HIm][TFSI] can display a eutectic point.

Abstract
Understanding lithium solvation and transport in ionic liquids is important due to their possible application in electrochemical devices. Using first-principles simulations aided by a metadynamics approach we study the free-energy landscape for lithium ions at infinite dilution in ethylammonium nitrate, a protic ionic liquid. We analyze the local structure of the liquid around the lithium cation and obtain a quantitative picture in agreement with experimental findings. Our simulations show that the lowest two free energy minima correspond to conformations with the lithium ion being solvated either by three or four nitrate ions with a transition barrier between them of 0.2 eV. Other less probable conformations having different solvation pattern are also investigated.

Abstract
We discuss some published results and provide new observations concerning the high level of structural complexity that lies behind the nanoscale correlations in ionic liquids (ILs) and their mixtures with molecular liquids. It turns out that this organization is a consequence of the hierarchical construction on both spatial (from ångström to several nanometer) and temporal (from fraction of picosecond to hundreds of nanosecond) scales, which requires joint use of experimental and computational tools.

Prabhu SR, Dutt GB. Does addition of an electrolyte influence the rotational diffusion of nondipolar solutes in a protic ionic liquid? J Phys Chem B 2015; 119:6311-6. Abstract
Rotational diffusion of two structurally similar nondipolar solutes, 2,5-dimethyl-1,4-dioxo-3,6-diphenylpyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole (DMDPP) and 1,4-dioxo-3,6-diphenylpyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole (DPP), has been examined in ethylammonium nitrate-lithium nitrate (EAN-LiNO3) mixtures to understand the influence of added electrolyte on the local environment experienced by the solute molecules. The measured reorientation times of both DMDPP and DPP in EAN-LiNO3 mixtures fall within the broad limits set by the hydrodynamic slip and stick boundary conditions. The hydrogen bond accepting DMDPP and the hydrogen bond donating DPP experience specific interactions with the cation and anion of the ionic liquid, respectively. Addition of LiNO3 (0.1 and 0.2 mole fraction) to EAN induces only viscosity related effects on the rotational diffusion of the two nondipolar solutes. These observations suggest that the local environment experienced by DMDPP and DPP in EAN is not altered upon the addition of LiNO3. Our results are consistent with the structural details available in the literature for EAN-LiNO3 mixtures.
