Abstract
Abstract
In this paper, sodium oleyl sulphate (SOS) was successfully synthesised by reacting octyl alcohol (OA) with gaseous sulphur trioxide (SO3) as a sulphating reagent in a falling film reactor. The structure was determined by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1HNMR) spectroscopy. The dynamic adsorption and aggregation behaviour of SOS was systematically investigated to reveal the relationship between the structure and properties of SOS. The physicochemical properties of SOS were determined by measuring the equilibrium surface tension, dynamic surface tension and dynamic contact angle, respectively. A laser particle size analyser and a transmission electron microscope (TEM) were used to analyse the aggregation behaviour of SOS. Compared to sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) and sodium n-octadecyl sulphate (C18H37OSO3Na), which have a similar structure to SOS, the increase in hydrophobic chain size and tighter molecular packing enabled by the polar head conformation caused a decrease in CMC and an increase in surface activity. The efficiency of the surface activity was controlled by a mixed diffusion kinetic adsorption mechanism. Moreover, SOS in aqueous solution showed efficient wettability on the surface of the low-energy paraffin film at concentration above the CMC. In addition, SOS molecules can spontaneously form spheroidal aggregates with increasing concentration, and the size of the aggregates increased with the concentration.

Abstract
Aiming at a new type of salt-free CASAIL (Catanionic Surface Active IL) for electrochemical applications or emulsifiers, dispersants, and foaming or antifoaming agents, we combined mesogenic anions (carboxylate) and cations (imidazolium) of similar shape and size to synthesize a series of congruent ion pairs of 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium alkylcarboxylates [Cnmim][Cm-1COO] (n = 10-16, m = 10-16). With particular focus on alkyl chain length varieties in both, imidazolium cations and carboxylate anions (n/m), the self-assembly in the bulk phase and in solution was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarized optical microscopy (POM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) experiments and surface tension measurements. Our results revealed that the presence of long alkyl chains on both the cation n and anion m leads to improved thermal stability of the bulk material while maintaining broad lamellar (SmA) mesophases. In water, we observed a strong and linear decrease of log(cmc) for increasing both the carboxylate anion and imidazolium cation chain length due to the increasing hydrophobic effect. Surprisingly, for both thermotropic behavior and micellization, the chain length of the carboxylate anion had a stronger impact than the chain length of the imidazolium cation, indicating its greater surface activity and tendency to form micelles.

Abstract
The size of droplets and bubbles, and the properties of emulsions and foams strongly depend on dynamic interfacial tension (γd) - a parameter that is often inaccessible due to the very short time scales for droplet and bubble formation, and the inaccessibility of (e.g., food) production lines. To solve this challenge, we developed a microfluidic tensiometer that can measure γd by monitoring the formation time of both droplets and bubbles. Our tensiometer is a pressure-driven microfluidic device that operates based on the principle of a pressure balance: the formation of a droplet (or a bubble) is initialized when the Laplace pressure of the interface is decreased below the externally applied pressure, and this decrease is caused by a reduction in γd that can be calculated from the applied pressure and the Young-Laplace equation. The decay of γd due to surfactant adsorption can be followed at the characteristic time scale, which is dependent on surfactant type and concentration. For 0.05-1% wt sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), we were able to measure γd at time scales down to 1 ms and 0.1 ms for droplet and bubble interfaces, respectively, at increasing applied pressures and SDS concentrations. Our tensiometer proves to be a simple, robust method that inherently allows access to nearly the full range of dynamic interfacial tension at relevant time scales.

Abstract
Improving the utilization rate of pesticides is key to achieve a reduction and synergism, and adding appropriate surfactant to pesticide preparation is an effective way to improve pesticide utilization. Fluorinated surfactants have excellent surface activity, thermal and chemical stability, but long-chain linear perfluoroalkyl derivatives are highly toxic, obvious persistence and high bioaccumulation in the environment. Therefore, new strategies for designing fluorinated surfactants which combine excellent surface activity and environmental safety would be useful. In this study, four non-ionic gemini surfactants with short fluorocarbon chains were synthesized. The surface activities of the resulting surfactants were assessed on the basis of equilibrium surface tension, dynamic surface tension, and contact angle. Compared with their monomeric counterparts, the gemini surfactants had markedly lower critical micelle concentrations and higher diffusivities, as well as better wetting abilities. We selected a single-chain surfactant and a gemini surfactant with good surface activities as synergists for the glyphosate water agent. Both surfactants clearly improved the efficacy of the herbicide, but the gemini surfactant had a significantly greater effect than the single-chain surfactant. An acute toxicity test indicated that the gemini surfactant showed slight toxicity to rats.

Computational Study on the Microscopic Adsorption Characteristics of Linear Alkylbenzene Sulfonates with Different Chain Lengths on Anthracite Surface. J CHEM-NY 2022. Abstract
In order to explore the influence of different lengths of hydrophobic carbon chains on the diffusion characteristics of surfactants on the surface of anthracite, six linear alkyl benzene sulfonates with different hydrophobic carbon chain lengths were selected (mC, m = 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18; m represents the numbers of carbon atoms in the hydrophobic carbon chain), and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were adopted. Models of surfactant-anthracite, surfactant-graphite layer, and water-surfactant-anthracite were constructed. After analyzing a series of properties such as adsorption energy, diffusion coefficient, radial distribution function (RDF), and hydrophobic tail order parameters, it was found that 12C had the highest adsorption strength on the surface of anthracite; the reason was that 12C had the highest degree of aggregation near the oxygen-containing functional groups on the surface of anthracite. Further studies had found that the hydrophobic tail chain of 12C had the strongest isotropy. The study fills the gap in the systematic study of the diffusion characteristics of linear alkylbenzene sulfonates (LAS) with different chain lengths on the surface of anthracite, enriches and develops the basic theory of coal wettability, and also provides technical ideas for the design of new surfactants and new dust suppression agents.

Abstract
Halochromic agent is easy to fall off from the surface of colorimetric membranes during fish freshness monitoring, which would decay the test accuracy. In order to increase its anchoring, citrated methacrylated urethane (CMU) synthesized by using tributyl citrate, β-hydroxyethyl methacrylate and diphenyl-methane-diisocyanate as a halochromic agent was grafted on polylactic acid (PLA). The CMU grafted PLA (PLA-CMU) together with tetrabutylammonium chloride (TBAC) prepared colorimetric membranes via electrospinning. 1H NMR and FTIR analysis showed successful bonding between CMU and PLA, and PLA-CMU grafting efficiency reached to the maximum value of 11.15%. Moreover, DSC confirmed that PLA-CMU existed low cold-crystallization temperature due to the excellent compatibility of CMU with PLA, which enhanced the anchoring of CMU effectively. Nanofiber-based PLA-CMU/TBAC colorimetric membrane enhanced the probability of molecules being captured due to its porous structure and large specific surface area. In addition, the increase in hydrophilicity of the membrane can provide a microenvironment for liquid phase reaction, exhibiting obvious color-changing sensitivity during cod freshness monitoring, from white color to light orange or pink with the deterioration of cod at 25 °C and 4 °C respectively. The results demonstrate PLA-CMU/TBAC colorimetric membranes would provide a simple and promising strategy for monitoring fish freshness.

Abstract
Abstract
The effect of oxyethylene groups on the adsorption properties of fatty alcohol polyoxyethylene ether sodium sulfate with narrow ethylene oxide distribution (AEmS, m = 3, 5, 7, 9) was characterized by means of the equilibrium surface tension, the dynamic surface tension and the contact angle. The results show that at a concentration lower than the critical micelle concentration (CMC) the oxyethylene groups act like hydrophobic groups to change the absorption properties. If the concentration is higher than the critical micelle concentration, the oxyethylene groups act as hydrophilic groups to change the absorption properties. The long polyoxyethylene chain of AE9S is very curly, which means that AE9S does not strictly follow the rule derived from AEmS (m = 3, 5, 7). The adsorption process of AEmS is a mixed diffusion-kinetic adsorption mechanism.

Abstract
Green surfactants alkyl glycosides are key to solve the inherent problem of water solubility due to their commercial application and extensive scientific research. Based on the enhancement strategy of hydrophilicity through the reconstruction of the conventional alkyl β-d-maltoside by introducing an oxyethyl group (-OCH2CH2-), d-maltose was used to prepare a series of nonionic disaccharide-based surfactants alkoxyethyl β-d-maltosides (4a-h, n = 6-16) so that the related water solubility was effectively improved, while the corresponding surface activity and other excellent properties were still maintained. Their physicochemical properties, including water solubility, surface activity, moisture absorption, and thermotropic liquid crystalline behavior, were investigated. The liquid crystal texture of alkoxyethyl β-d-maltosides (n = 7-16) has a fan-shaped focal conic texture. Furthermore, decoxyethyl β-d-maltoside had the strongest foaming characteristic and the best foam stability. Moreover, dodecoxyethyl β-d-maltoside (4f, n =12) had stronger emulsifying activity in the rapeseed oil/water system. Finally, CTAC/4f binary surfactants had an obvious synergistic effect. Such β-d-maltosides should have good application prospects in the future.

Abstract
Catanionic mixtures are commonly used in applications due to synergetic properties of both cationic and anionic surfactants. To better understand the mechanism of the micellization process of salt-free catanionic surfactants, alkyltrimethylammonium alkanecarboxylates, [CxMe3N]+[Cy]-, with medium to long alkyl chains on both cation and anion (x,y = 6-10), were investigated in aqueous solution by density and zeta potential measurements, isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC), and dielectric relaxation spectroscopy (DRS). The obtained ITC data was analysed with the help of a two-step model equation, yielding the thermodynamic parameters, micelle charge and aggregation numbers. Comparison with the "parent" decyltrimethylammonium chloride and sodium decanoate reveals that combined dehydration of both alkyl chains increases entropy upon micellization. In the first step neutral smaller micelles with partly dehydrated alkyl chains are formed, while in the second step larger charged micelles with fully dehydrated alkyl chains are equally favourable. At low temperature both formations are thermodynamically equivalent, while with increasing temperature neutral micelles become more entropically favourable and charged micelles more enthalpically favourable. The resulting average micelle charge and average aggregation number are decreasing with temperature. From the DRS spectra, effective hydration numbers of the free monomers and micelles were deduced and are comparable to the "parent" cationic surfactant micelles.

Abstract
Abstract
The equilibrium surface properties and dynamic surface tension (DST) are presented for aqueous solutions of novel eco-friendly cationic saccharide surfactants (CnDGPB) at different concentrations and temperatures. The equilibrium surface tension, the DST, the effective diffusion coefficients and the activation barrier of the surfactants are calculated and analyzed. In addition, the general diffusion mechanism of the surfactants is proposed. The equilibrium surface tension results show that the γCMC and CMC values decrease with increasing temperature. The interactions (repulsion forces) between the hydrophobic groups and water molecules decrease with increasing temperature, which results in increased HLB values. This phenomenon causes a higher Amin and lower Γmax. The DST of CnDGPB below and above the CMC is tested by the maximum bubble pressure method at temperature from 25 °C to 45 °C. The adsorption activation energy of CnDGPB is between 3 kJ/mol and 20 kJ/mol. The results show that the final stages of the DST decays are consistent with the activated diffusion-controlled adsorption mechanism.

Abstract
Abstract
A new type of catanionic surfactant phosphonium benzene sulfonate was synthesized by quaternization of triphenyl phosphine with dimethyl carbonate and followed by anion exchange with alkyl benzene sulfonic acid. The molecular structure was characterized by FT-IR, 1H-NMR, and 31P-NMR. The thermal stability of phosphonium benzene sulfonate was evaluated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Its surface properties were studied systematically through equilibrium surface tension, electrical conductivity, and dynamic surface tension measurements. The wettability, foam properties, and emulsification of phosphonium benzene sulfonate were estimated in this paper. TGA results revealed that it has an excellent thermostability and could be used below 350 °C. Equilibrium surface tension results indicated that it has a low critical micelle concentration (CMC, about 0.10 mmol/L), lower than that of ammonium benzene sulfonate and sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate. Furthermore, the micellization of phosphonium benzene sulfonate in aqueous solution is an entropy-driven spontaneous process. The adsorption process of phosphonium benzenesulfonate at the air-liquid interface is controlled by hybrid kinetic adsorption. Moreover, it has excellent wetting and emulsifying properties and low foam properties.

Abstract
AbstractLauryl phosphate monoester was synthesized from the starting materials lauryl alcohol and phosphoric acid without catalysts. Subsequently, the crude product was purified by recrystallization and characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (31P-NMR). From the results, it was apparent that the synthesized material was the desired target product. Lauryl monoester potassium phosphate reduced the surface tension of water to 25.08 mN/m at a critical micelle concentration (CMC) of 0.569 mmol/L. It showed a low contact angle and had a low surface tension, indicating a good hydrophilicity. Lauryl monoester potassium phosphate also showed excellent antistatic properties, however its emulsifying ability was not good. The size of the aggregates of lauryl monoester calcium phosphate in aqueous solution was 220 nm and their morphology was spherical.

Abstract
Abstract
Sodium salts of sulfonated cardanol polyethoxylates (NSF–nSO, with n = 3 or 6 for the average ethylene oxide number) were synthesized using cardanol polyethylene oxides from renewable cardanol and sodium isethionate as reagents. The surface tension, interfacial tension (IFT), foaming, wetting ability and emulsifying ability of NSF–nSO were investigated. It was found that there was no significant difference between NSF–3SO and NSF–6SO in the critical micelle concentration (CMC), but the surface tension of NSF–3SO at CMC was lower than that of NSF–6SO. The diffusion coefficient (Deff) decreases with the increase of the NSF–nSO concentration. The IFT between NSF–3SO solution and dodecane is lower than that of NSF–6SO at studied salt concentrations. The foaming, wetting and emulsifying abilities of NSF–3SO are better than those of NSF–6SO. The above results show that NSF–3SO has better surface/interface activity than NSF–6SO.
