Structural characterization of the [CnC1im][C4F9SO3] ionic liquid series: Alkyl versus perfluoroalkyl side chains

Unraveling the Morphology of [CnC1Im]Cl Ionic Liquids Combining Cluster and Aggregation Analyses

A characteristic feature of ionic liquids is their nanosegregation, resulting in the formation of polar and nonpolar domains. The influence of increasing the alkyl side chain on the morphology of ionic liquids has been the subject of many studies. Typically, the polar network (charged part of the cation and anion) constitutes a continuous subphase that partially breaks to allow the formation of a nonpolar domain with the increase of the alkyl chain. As the nonpolar network expands, the number of tails per aggregate increases until the ionic liquid percolates. In this work, we demonstrate how the complementary software packages TRAVIS and AGGREGATES can be employed in conjunction to gain insights into the size and morphology of the [CnC1Im]Cl family, with n ∈ {2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12}. The combination of the two approaches rounds off the picture of the intricate arrangement and structural features of the alkyl chains.

Towards compartmentalized micelles: Mixed perfluorinated and hydrogenated ionic surfactants in aqueous solution

HYPOTHESIS

Aqueous solutions of mixtures of hydrogenated and perfluorinated ionic surfactants are known to display anomalous aggregation behavior due to the mutual phobicity between hydrogenated and perfluorinated chains. Despite all efforts, different experimental limitations prevented so far a definite interpretation of the existing experimental results: both intermicellar and intramicellar segregation remain acceptable possibilities.

METHOD

The potential for segregation of mixtures of fluorinated and hydrogenated ionic surfactants in water was assessed using atomistic molecular dynamics simulations. Aqueous mixtures of hydrogenated and perfluorinated ionic surfactants were studied: mixtures of anionic surfactants (sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS) + sodium perfluoro-octanoate (SPFO)) and catanionic surfactants (decyltrimethylammonium bromide (DeTAB) + SPFO) were simulated.

FINDINGS

The mixture of anionic surfactants, SDS + SPFO, exhibits clear intramicellar segregation between fluorinated and hydrogenated chains, displaying hydrogenous-rich and fluorous-rich regions. Compartmentalized micelles are thus clearly formed. The simulation results also suggest the possibility of intermicellar segregation. Conversely, catanionic mixtures of DeTAB and SPFO in water solution assemble into a large oblate structure, containing all available molecules in the simulation box, resembling a double layer membrane or a vesicle wall. In this case mixing between fluorinated and hydrogenated surfactants is dictated by charge alternation.

Understanding the Liquid Structure in Mixtures of Ionic Liquids with Semiperfluoroalkyl or Alkyl Chains

By mixing ionic liquids (ILs), it is possible to fine-tune their bulk and interfacial structure. This alters their physical properties and solvation behavior and is a simple way to prepare a collection of ILs whose properties can be tuned to optimize a specific application. In this study, mixtures of perfluorinated and alkylated ILs have been prepared, and links between composition, properties, and nanostructure have been investigated. These different classes of ILs vary substantially in the flexibility and polarizability of their chains. Thus, a range of useful structural and physical property variations are accessible through mixing that will expand the library of IL mixtures available in an area that to this point has received relatively little attention. In the experiments presented herein, the physical properties and bulk structure of mixtures of 1-methyl-3-octylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide [C8MIM][Tf2N] and 1-(1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorooctyl)-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide [C8MIM-F13][Tf2N] have been prepared. The bulk liquid structure was investigated using a combination of small-angle X-ray and neutron scattering (SAXS and SANS, respectively) experiments in combination with atomistic molecular dynamics simulations and the measurement of density and viscosity. We observed that the addition of [C8MIM-F13][Tf2N] to [C8MIM][Tf2N] causes changes in the nanostructure of the IL mixtures that are dependent on composition so that variation in the characteristic short-range correlations is observed as a function of composition. Thus, while the length scales associated with the apolar regions (polar non-polar peak─PNPP) increase with the proportion of [C8MIM-F13][Tf2N] in the mixtures, perhaps surprisingly given the greater volume of the fluorocarbon chains, the length scale of the charge-ordering peak decreases. Interestingly, consideration of the contact peak shows that its origins are both in the direct anion···cation contact length scale and the nature (and hence volume) of the chains appended to the imidazolium cation.

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Relaxation Pathways in Electrolytes for Energy Storage

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spin relaxation times have been an instrumental tool in deciphering the local environment of ionic species, the various interactions they engender and the effect of these interactions on their dynamics in conducting media. Of particular importance has been their application in studying the wide range of electrolytes for energy storage, on which this review is based. Here we highlight some of the research carried out on electrolytes in recent years using NMR relaxometry techniques. Specifically, we highlight studies on liquid electrolytes, such as ionic liquids and organic solvents; on semi-solid-state electrolytes, such as ionogels and polymer gels; and on solid electrolytes such as glasses, glass ceramics and polymers. Although this review focuses on a small selection of materials, we believe they demonstrate the breadth of application and the invaluable nature of NMR relaxometry.

A phase variety of fluorinated ionic liquids: Molecular conformational and crystal polymorph

Crystal polymorphs of fluorinated ionic liquids (fILs) were examined at low-temperature (LT) by Raman spectroscopy. The fILs were 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium perfluorobutanesulfonate, [C_nmim][PFBS] (n = 4, 6, and 8). The cations and anion possess conformational degrees of freedom. Various LT phases were derived from the conformational polymorphs of the cations and the anion. Conformational flexibility depended on alkyl chain length. The crystal polymorphs in the fILs were sensitive to molecular conformations and flexibility.

Highlighting the difference in nanostructure between domain-forming and domainless protic ionic liquids

Nanoheterogeneity in some ionic liquids is a known phenomenon, but quantifying or sometimes even identifying it is not a straightforward task. We compared several known and suggested some novel approaches to identify and characterize domain segregation using the results of atomistic simulations. 10 ammonium-based protic ionic liquids with different propensity to form segregated polar and apolar domains as suggested by experimental studies were considered. They include butyl-, propyl-, 2-methoxyethylammonium nitrate, butyl- and propylammonium hydrogen sulfate, butylammonium thiocyanate (domain-forming liquids), ethylammonium and pyrrolidinium nitrate (weakly pronounced segregation), methylammonium and 2-hydroxyethylammonium nitrate (domainless liquids). Molecular dynamics simulations were performed using models based on the OPLS-AA force field with scaled ion charges. Results show that domains can be recognized and the characteristic domain length scale can be determined from peaks of Ripley's functions, peaks and large-period oscillations of finite-volume radial distribution function integral, or difference of such integrals for polar and apolar atoms, and peaks of local atom density variance. These peaks disappear with increasing temperature due to the disruption of segregated domains. In domain-forming liquids, apolar atoms are more homogeneously distributed in space than polar atoms. In addition, the probability of molecular-sized cavity formation is significantly higher in apolar domains, which determines better solubility of apolar species in domain-forming ILs. The suggested approaches can be applied to various nanostructured liquids including both ionic and molecular solvents and mixtures, as well as other systems with mesoscale ordering.

Disclosing the Potential of Fluorinated Ionic Liquids as Interferon-Alpha 2b Delivery Systems

Interferon-alpha 2b (IFN-α 2b) is a therapeutic protein used for the treatment of cancer, viral infections, and auto-immune diseases. Its application is hindered by a low bioavailability and instability in the bloodstream, and the search for new strategies for a target delivery and stabilization of IFN-α 2b to improve its therapeutic efficacy is crucial. Fluorinated ionic liquids (FILs) are promising biomaterials that: (i) can form self-assembled structures; (ii) have complete miscibility in water; and (iii) can be designed to have reduced toxicity. The influence of IFN-α 2b in the aggregation behaviour of FILs and the interactions between them were investigated through conductivity and surface tension measurements, and using electron microscopic and spectroscopy techniques to study FILs feasibility as an interferon-alpha 2b delivery system. The results show that the presence of IFN-α 2b influences the aggregation behaviour of FILs and that strong interaction between the two compounds occurs. The protein might not be fully encapsulated by FILs. However, the FIL can be tailored in the future to carry IFN-α 2b by the formation of a conjugate, which prevents the aggregation of this protein. This work constitutes a first step toward the design and development of FIL-based IFN-α 2b delivery systems.

Structural features of selected protic ionic liquids based on a super-strong base

Protic ionic liquids (PIL) were prepared from a super-strong base 1,7-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene (DBU) and super-strong acids, trifluoromethane sulfonic acid (TfOH), and (trifluoromethanesulfonyl)-(nonafluorobutylsulfonyl)imide, (IM14H), ([DBUH][TfO] and [DBUH][IM14], respectively; the latter for the first time) and their chemical and physical properties and structural features have been explored using a synergy of experimental and computational tools. The short range order in neat DBU, as well as the long range structural correlations induced by charge correlation and hydrogen bonding interactions in the ionic liquids, have been explored under ambient conditions, where these compounds are proposed for a variety of applications. Similar to other [DBUH]-based PILs, the probed ones behave as good ionic liquids. Molecular dynamics-rationalised X-ray diffraction patterns show the major role played by hydrogen bonding in affecting morphology in these systems. Additionally, we find further evidence for the existence of fluorous domains in [DBUH][IM14], thus potentially extending the range of applications for these PILs.

Mesoscale Organization and Dynamics in Binary Ionic Liquid Mixtures

The impact of mesoscale organization on dynamics and ion transport in binary ionic liquid mixtures is investigated by broad-band dielectric spectroscopy, dynamic-mechanical spectroscopy, X-ray scattering, and molecular dynamics simulations. The mixtures are found to form distinct liquids with macroscopic properties that significantly deviate from weighted contributions of the neat components. For instance, it is shown that the mesoscale morphologies in ionic liquids can be tuned by mixing to enhance the static dielectric permittivity of the resulting liquid by as high as 100% relative to the neat ionic liquid components. This enhancement is attributed to the intricate role of interfacial dynamics associated with the changes in the mesoscopic aggregate morphologies in these systems. These results demonstrate the potential to design the physicochemical properties of ionic liquids through control of solvophobic aggregation.

Structural analysis of ionic liquids with symmetric and asymmetric fluorinated anions

Ionic liquids (ILs) with relatively low viscosities and broad windows of electrochemical stability are often constructed by pairing asymmetric cations with bisfluorosulfonylimide (FSI^-) or bistriflimide (NTf₂ ^-) anions. In this work, we systematically studied the structures of ILs with these anions and related perfluorobis-sulfonylimide anions with asymmetry and/or longer chains: (fluorosulfonyl)(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (BSI_0,1 ^-), bis(pentafluoroethylsulfonyl)imide (BETI^-), and (trifluoromethylsulfonyl) (nonafluorobutylsulfonyl)imide (BSI_1,4 ^-) using high energy X-ray scattering and molecular dynamics simulation methods. 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium cations with shorter (ethyl, Im_2,1 ⁺) and longer (octyl, Im_1,8 ⁺) hydrocarbon chains were selected to examine how the sizes of nonpolar hydrocarbon and fluorous chains affect IL structures and properties. In comparison with these, we also computationally explored the structure of ionic liquids with anions having longer fluorinated tails.

Microscopic Structural and Dynamic Features in Triphilic Room Temperature Ionic Liquids

Here we report a thorough investigation of the microscopic and mesoscopic structural organization in a series of triphilic fluorinated room temperature ionic liquids, namely [1-alkyl,3-methylimidazolium][(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)(nonafluorobutylsulfonyl)imide], with alkyl = ethyl, butyl, octyl ([C_nmim][IM₁₄], n = 2, 4, 8), based on the synergic exploitation of X-ray and Neutron Scattering and Molecular Dynamics simulations. This study reveals the strong complementarity between X-ray/neutron scattering in detecting the complex segregated morphology in these systems at mesoscopic spatial scales. The use of MD simulations delivering a very good agreement with experimental data allows us to gain a robust understanding of the segregated morphology. The structural scenario is completed with determination of dynamic properties accessing the diffusive behavior and a relaxation map is provided for [C₂mim][IM₁₄] and [C₈mim][IM₁₄], highlighting their natures as fragile glass formers.

Effect of molecular solvents of varying polarity on the self-assembly of 1-n-dodecyl-3-methylimidazolium octylsulfate ionic liquid

Large-scale molecular dynamics simulations consisting of more than 88,000–106,000 atoms for approximately 250 ns (including equilibration and production) were conducted to assess the effect of polar, nonpolar and amphiphilic molecular solvents on the nanoscale structuring of 1-[Formula: see text]-dodecyl-3-methylimidazolium [C[Formula: see text]mim] octylsulfate [C8SO4] ionic liquid (IL). Water [H2O], [Formula: see text]-octane [C8H[Formula: see text]] and 1-octanol [C8H[Formula: see text]OH] are employed as examples of polar, nonpolar, and amphiphilic molecules, respectively. The results indicate that each of these molecular solvents modify the nanosegregation behavior of the ionic liquid in a unique way. Water induces a high order of structuring of the ionic liquid as indicated by extremely high nematic order parameter for the system. In addition, the morphology of the neat ionic liquid is transformed from layer-like to that of bilayer-like in which the polar and nonpolar domains alternate. The presence of water also causes the stretching of the nonpolar domain, thus, increasing its size. At the concentration examined in this work, [Formula: see text]-octane is found to be only partially miscible with the ionic liquid. The polar network is maintained; however, the continuous cationic nonpolar domain is split into multiple domains. [Formula: see text]-octane is accommodated in the ionic liquid nonpolar domain. Similarly, the amphiphilicity of 1-octanol leads to an increase in the number of cationic as well as anionic domains. The overall nonpolar domain length, however, remains nearly identical to that found for the pure ionic liquid. Additional characterization of structural features of the three systems is discussed in terms of one-dimensional number densities, nematic order parameters for the overall systems and their components and structure factors.

Direct experimental observation of mesoscopic fluorous domains in fluorinated room temperature ionic liquids

Fluorinated room temperature ionic liquids (FRTILs) represent a class of solvent media that are attracting great attention due to their IL-specific properties as well as features stemming from their fluorous nature. Medium-to-long fluorous tails constitute a well-defined apolar moiety in the otherwise polar environment. Similarly to the case of alkyl tails, such chains are expected to result in the formation of self-assembled fluorous domains. So far, however, no direct experimental observation has been made of the existence of such structural heterogeneities on the nm scale. We report here the first experimental evidence of the existence of mesoscopic spatial segregation of fluorinated domains, on the basis of highly complementary X-ray and neutron scattering data sets (highlighting the importance of the latter probe) and NMR spectroscopy. Data are interpreted using atomistic molecular dynamics simulations, emphasizing the existence of a self-assembly mechanism that delivers segregated fluorous domains, where preferential solubilisation of fluorinated compounds can occur, thus paving the way for several smart applications.
