Novel amine modification of ZIF-8 for improving simultaneous removal of cationic dyes from aqueous solutions using supported liquid membrane

Cost-effective removal of Cr(VI) ions from aqueous media using L-cysteine functionalized gold nanoparticles embedded in melamine-based covalent organic framework (Cys-AuNPs@COF)

Due to the growing concern about the environmental effects of heavy metals, researchers are developing materials that possess high absorption capacity in addition to selectivity and high absorption speed. Recently, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have been considered as emerging and promising adsorbents for the removal of many types of pollutants. In this work, a novel and selective adsorbent (Cys-AuNPs@COF) was prepared by embedding gold nanoparticles functionalized with L-cysteine in melamine-based COF for the removal of Cr(VI) ions from wastewater. The synthesized Cys-AuNPs@COF were characterizedby Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), Thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA), and elemental mapping (EMA) analysis. The removal of Cr(VI) ions was performed using a batch mode process by taking advantage of response surface methodology (RSM) based on a central composite design (CCD) model. The maximum adsorption capacity of Cys-AuNPs@COF was 151.5 mg g-1. The experimental results followed the Langmuir model and showed pseudo-second-order kinetics. A portable, low-cost, and highly sensitive device with a smartphone colorimeter platform was developed for in situ measurement of trace amounts of chromium (VI) ions. Due to its simplicity and versatility, this method has the potential to serve as an alternative to conventional field analysis methods.

Fabricating Materials of Institute Lavoisier-53(Fe)/zeolite imidazolate framework-8 hybrid materials as high-efficiency and reproducible adsorbents for removing organic pollutants

Environmental pollution by emerging contaminants has become an urgent problem. Herein, novel binary metal-organic framework hybrids were constructed from Materials of Institute Lavoisier-53(Fe) (MIL-53(Fe)) and zeolite imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) for the first time. A battery of characterizations were employed to determine the MIL/ZIF hybrids' properties and morphology. Furthermore, the MIL/ZIF towards toxic antibiotics (tetracycline, ciprofloxacin and ofloxacin) were studied to explore their adsorption abilities. The present work disclosed that the obtained MIL-53(Fe)/ZIF-8 = 2:3 possessed an eminent specific surface area with an admirable removal efficiency of tetracycline (97.4%), ciprofloxacin (97.1%) and ofloxacin (92.4%), respectively. The tetracycline adsorption process conformed to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and this process was more compatible with the Langmuir isotherm model with the highest adsorption capacity of 215.0 mg g^-1. Moreover, the process of removing tetracycline was proved to be spontaneous and exothermic by the thermodynamic results. Furthermore, the MIL-53(Fe)/ZIF-8 = 2:3 towards tetracycline exhibited significant regeneration ability. The effects of pH, dosage, interfering ions and oscillation frequency on tetracycline adsorption capacity and removal efficiency were also investigated. The primary factors contributing to the decent adsorption ability between MIL-53(Fe)/ZIF-8 = 2:3 and tetracycline included electrostatic, π-π stacking, hydrogen bonding and weak coordination interactions. Additionally, we also investigated the adsorption ability in real wastewater. Thus, the proposed binary metal-organic framework hybrid materials can be deemed a promising adsorbent in wastewater purification.

Enhanced adsorption performance of UiO-66 via modification with functional groups and integration into hydrogels

University of Oslo-66 (UiO-66) was a potential adsorbent for removing various pollutants from wastewater. Modifying the UiO-66 surface with different functional groups could enhance the adsorption performance. In this study, the UiO-66 modified with a functional group of -NH₂ or -NO₂ was prepared and tested to adsorb different pollutants. The results showed that -NO₂ modified UiO-66 increased the adsorption capacity of tetracycline by 17 times to 94.08 mg g^-1 compared with unmodified UiO-66. The adsorption process of UiO-66-NO₂ followed the pseudo-second-order adsorption kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm model with a maximum isotherm adsorption capacity of 127.32 mg g^-1. The adsorption interaction was hydrogen bonding and electrostatic attraction. The UiO-66-NO₂ also showed good adsorption performance to Co²⁺, Methylene blue, Congo red. Fixing UiO-66-NO₂ into hydrogel performed a stable absorption performance with a high absorption capacity (71.56 mg g^-1) to TC and a good regeneration rate (85%) after five cycles, providing a novel applicable way to remove pollutants from wastewater.

Amine-Based Deep Eutectic Solvents for Alizarin Extraction from Aqueous Media

Alizarin dye is toxic and has a negative influence on human life and the environment. Consequently, the scientific community faces a difficult issue in developing efficient approaches for removing alizarin from water streams. Six distinct deep eutectic solvents (DESs) containing different hydrogen bond acceptors (HBAs), namely trioctylphosphine, trioctylamine and trihexylamine, and two hydrogen bond donors (HBDs), namely salicylic acid and malonic acid, were used to rapidly remove alizarin from high concentration solutions up to 2000 mg/L at room temperature using the liquid–liquid micro-extraction method (LLE). DES-3 had the highest extraction efficiency for alizarin among the other synthesized DESs. The effect of process variables such pH, contact time, dye initial concentration, volume ratio, temperature and salt on alizarin extraction efficiency from water stream was explored, optimized and reported. Statistical analysis was conducted to ensure the accuracy of values for the optimized parameters. For a 1000 mg/L solution of alizarin with a DES/alizarin volume ratio of 1:10 at room temperature, the maximum elimination of 98.02 percent was achieved in 5 min. FTIR was used to analyze the structural properties of DES and the interaction between DES and alizarin. The thermal stability of DES-3 was determined using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and indicated that DES-3 has excellent thermal stability up to 320 °C. Human saline was used to test the toxicity of the synthesized DES in vitro. It was determined that synthesized DES is less harmful and more effective at removing alizarin.

Desalination Characteristics of Cellulose Acetate FO Membrane Incorporated with ZIF-8 Nanoparticles

Forward osmosis membranes have a wide range of applications in the field of water treatment. However, the application of seawater desalination is restricted, so the research of forward osmosis membranes for seawater desalination poses new challenges. In this study, zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) was synthesized by a mechanical stirring method, and its crystal structure, surface morphology, functional group characteristics, thermochemical stability, pore size distribution and specific surface area were analyzed. The cellulose acetate (CA)/ZIF-8 mixed matrix forward osmosis membrane was prepared by using the synthesized ZIF-8 as a modified additive. The effects of the additive ZIF-8 content, coagulation bath temperature, mixing temperature and heat treatment temperature on the properties of the CA/ZIF-8 forward osmosis membrane were systematically studied, and the causes were analyzed to determine the best membrane preparation parameters. The structure of the CA membrane and CA/ZIF-8 mixed matrix forward osmosis membranes prepared under the optimal conditions were characterized by Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), contact angle and Atomic force microscope (AFM). Finally, the properties of the HTI membrane (Membrane manufactured by Hydration Technology Innovations Inc.), CA forward osmosis membrane and CA/ZIF-8 mixed matrix forward osmosis membrane were compared under laboratory conditions. For the CA membrane, the water flux and reverse salt flux reached 48.85 L·m⁻²·h⁻¹ and 3.4 g·m⁻²·h⁻¹, respectively. The reverse salt flux and water flux of the CA/ZIF-8 membrane are 2.84 g·m⁻²·h⁻¹ and 50.14 L·m⁻²·h⁻¹, respectively. ZIF-8 has a promising application in seawater desalination.

Novel Cellulose Triacetate (CTA)/Cellulose Diacetate (CDA) Blend Membranes Enhanced by Amine Functionalized ZIF-8 for CO2 Separation

Currently, cellulose acetate (CA) membranes dominate membrane-based CO₂ separation for natural gas purification due to their economical and green nature. However, their lower CO₂ permeability and ease of plasticization are the drawbacks. To overcome these weaknesses, we have developed high-performance mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) consisting of cellulose triacetate (CTA), cellulose diacetate (CDA), and amine functionalized zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (NH₂-ZIF-8) for CO₂ separation. The NH₂-ZIF-8 was chosen as a filler because (1) its pore size is between the kinetic diameters of CO₂ and CH₄ and (2) the NH₂ groups attached on the surface of NH₂-ZIF-8 have good affinity with CO₂ molecules. The incorporation of NH₂-ZIF-8 in the CTA/CDA blend matrix improved both the gas separation performance and plasticization resistance. The optimized membrane containing 15 wt.% of NH₂-ZIF-8 had a CO₂ permeability of 11.33 Barrer at 35 °C under the trans-membrane pressure of 5 bar. This is 2-fold higher than the pristine membrane, while showing a superior CO₂/CH₄ selectivity of 33. In addition, the former had 106% higher CO₂ plasticization resistance of up to about 21 bar and an impressive mixed gas CO₂/CH₄ selectivity of about 40. Therefore, the newly fabricated MMMs based on the CTA/CDA blend may have great potential for CO₂ separation in the natural gas industry.

Nano-engineered Adsorbent for the Removal of Dyes from Water: A Review

Background:

The huge quantity of wastewater, containing poisonous and hazardous dyes, is released by various industries which pollute water in direct and indirect ways. Most of the dyes are a dangerous class of water contaminants which have affected the environment drastically. Some dyes such as congo red, rhodamine B, methylene blue, methyl violet, and crystal violet are a serious threat to human beings.

Remediation Method:

Numerous methods are available for the removal of dyes from water. Adsorption, being a superior and eco-friendly technique, has advantage of eliminating organic dyes because of the availability of materials as adsorbents. The inexpensive nanomaterials are a more attractive choice for remediation of various dyes due to their unique properties and offer an adequate pathway to adsorb any organic dye from water to overcome its hazardous effects on human health.

Results:

In this review, we have discussed the latest literature related to various types of synthesis, characterization and uses as adsorbent for highly adsorptive removal capacity of nanoparticles for organic dyes.

Conclusion:

Adsorption technology provides an attractive pathway for further research and improvement in more efficient nanoparticles, with higher adsorption capacity, for numerous dyes to eliminate the dyes discharged from various industries and thus reduce the contamination of water. Therefore, nanocomposites may contribute to future prospective water treatment process.
