Hydrophilicity and flexibility of the spacer as critical parameters on the aggregation behavior of long alkyl chain cationic gemini surfactants in aqueous solution

Study on the Synthesis, Surface Activity, and Self-Assembly Behavior of Anionic Non-Ionic Gemini Surfactants

The use of surfactants in oil recovery can effectively improve crude oil recovery rate. Due to the enhanced salt and temperature resistance of surfactant molecules by non-ionic chain segments, anionic groups have good emulsifying stability. Currently, there are many studies on anionic non-ionic surfactants for oil recovery in China, but there is relatively little systematic research on introducing EOs into hydrophobic alkyl chains, especially on their self-assembly behavior. This article proposes a simple and effective synthesis method, using 3-aminopropane sulfonic acid, fatty alcohol polyoxyethylene ether, and epichlorohydrin as raw materials, to insert EO into hydrophobic alkyl chains and synthesize a series of new anionic non-ionic Gemini surfactants (CnEO-5, n = 8, 12, 16). The surface activity, thermodynamic properties, and self-assembly behavior of these surfactants were systematically studied through surface tension, conductivity, steady-state fluorescence probes, transmission electron microscopy, and molecular dynamics simulations. The surface tension test results show that CnEO-5 has high surface activity and is higher than traditional single chain surfactants and structurally similar anionic non-ionic Gemini surfactants. Additionally, thermodynamic parameters (e.g., ΔG°mic ΔH°mic ΔS°mic et al. indicate that CnEO-5 molecules are exothermic and spontaneous during the micellization process. DLS, p-values, and TEM results indicate that anionic non-ionic Gemini surfactants with shorter hydrophobic chains (such as C8EO-5) tend to form larger vesicles in aqueous solutions, which are formed in a tail to tail and staggered manner; Negative non-ionic Gemini surfactants with longer hydrophobic chains (such as C12EO-5, C16EO-5) tend to form small micelles. The test results indicate that CnEO-5 anionic non-ionic Gemini surfactants have certain application prospects in improving crude oil recovery.

Properties and Applications of Quaternary Ammonium Gemini Surfactant 12-6-12: An Overview

Surfactants are amphiphilic molecules and one of the most versatile products of the chemical industry. They can be absorbed at the air-water interface and can align themselves so that the hydrophobic part is in the air while the hydrophilic part is in water. This alignment lowers the surface or interfacial tension. Gemini surfactants are a modern variety of surfactants with unique properties and a very wide range of potential applications. Hexamethylene-1,6-bis(N-dodecyl-N,N-dimethylammonium bromide) is one such representative compound that is a better alternative to a single analogue. It shows excellent surface, antimicrobial, and anticorrosion properties. With a highly efficient synthetic method and a good ecological profile, it is a potential candidate for numerous applications, including biomedical applications.

Evaluation of the antiviral potential of gemini surfactants against influenza virus H1N1

Influenza A virus (IAV) affects human health worldwide as a high-risk disease. It can neither be easily controlled by current vaccines and nor be treated by conventional drugs. Gemini surfactants (GS) have shown several properties including antiviral activity. In this study, the antiviral capacity of some GS compounds with different levels of hydrophobicity was examined. The 50% cytotoxic (CC₅₀) and non-cytotoxic (NCTC) concentrations of the compounds were determined by MTT method. The NCTCs, the same as effective concentrations (EC₅₀s), were tested for the antiviral capacity against IAV in different combination treatments for 1 h incubation on MDCK cells. The HA and MTT assays were used to evaluate the virus titer and cell viabilities, respectively. The hemolytic activity of the compounds was also assessed using an HA inhibition assay. To evaluate the apoptotic effect of GS compounds, Annexin V-PI kit was used. The HA titers decreased between 1-6.5 logs, 1-4.5 logs, and 1-5.5 logs in simultaneous, pre- and post-penetration combination treatments, respectively. The cell viability values in all combination treatments were favorable. The HI assay indicated the hemolytic potential of GSs and their physical interaction with viral HA. The apoptosis test results highlighted anti-apoptotic capacity of the GS compounds alone and in the presence of influenza virus especially for the hydrophobic ones. Gemini surfactants were generally more efficacious in simultaneous treatment. Their antiviral potential may be attributed to their physical interaction with viral membrane or HA glycoprotein that disrupts viral particle or blocks viral entry to the cell and inhibits its propagation.

Dicationic Herbicidal Ionic Liquids Comprising Two Active Ingredients Exhibiting Different Modes of Action

In the framework of this study, dicationic herbicidal ionic liquids (HILs) containing tetramethylene-1,4-bis(decyldimethylammonium) and dodecylmethylene-1,12-bis(decyldimethylammonium), including two different herbicidal anions exhibiting different modes of action, were synthesized and characterized. One herbicide incorporated into the HILs was a tribenuron-methyl belonging to ALS inhibitors, while the second herbicidal anion was a synthetic auxin that acts as a growth regulator, namely 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetate (2,4-D), 2-(2,4-dichlorophenoxy)propionate, (2,4-DP), 2,4,5-trichlorophenoxyacetate (2,4,5-T), 4-chloro-2-methylphenoxyacetiate (MCPA), 2-(4-chloro-2-methylphenoxy)propionate (MCPP), and 4-chlorophenoxyacetate (4-CPA). The obtained products were found to be unstable and decomposed, which can be attributed to the presence of an additional methyl group within the sulfonylurea bridge of the tribenuron-methyl. The synthesized HILs exhibited good affinity with polar and semipolar solvents, with ethyl acetate and hexane as the only solvents that did not dissolve the HILs. Greenhouse tests demonstrated that most of the obtained HILs were more effective than the reference herbicide containing tribenuron-methyl. The length of the alkyl chain in the cation also influenced the effectiveness of the HILs. Better effects were observed for dodecylmethylene-1,12-bis(decyldimethylammonium) cations compared to tetramethylene-1,4-bis(decyldimethylammonium). Therefore, the novel dicatonic HILs showed to integrate the advent of the combination of the different herbicides into a single molecule, enhance herbicidal efficacy, and reduce the risk of weed resistance due to the various modes of action of the applied treatment.

CNSL, a Promising Building Blocks for Sustainable Molecular Design of Surfactants: A Critical Review

Surfactants are crystallizing a certain focus for consumer interest, and their market is still expected to grow by 4 to 5% each year. Most of the time these surfactants are of petroleum origin and are not often biodegradable. Cashew Nut Shell Liquid (CNSL) is a promising non-edible renewable resource, directly extracted from the shell of the cashew nut. The interesting structure of CNSL and its components (cardanol, anacardic acid and cardol) lead to the synthesis of biobased surfactants. Indeed, non-ionic, anionic, cationic and zwitterionic surfactants based on CNSL have been reported in the literature. Even now, CNSL is absent or barely mentioned in specialized review or chapters talking about synthetic biobased surfactants. Thus, this review focuses on CNSL as a building block for the synthesis of surfactants. In the first part, it describes and criticizes the synthesis of molecules and in the second part, it compares the efficiency and the properties (CMC, surface tension, kraft temperature, biodegradability) of the obtained products with each other and with commercial ones.

Cationic gemini surfactant properties, its potential as a promising bioapplication candidate, and strategies for improving its biocompatibility: A review

Gemini surfactants consist of two cationic monomers of a surfactant linked together with a spacer. The specific structure of a cationic gemini surfactant is the reason for both its high surface activity and its ability to decrease the surface tension of water. The high surface activity and unique structure of gemini surfactants result in outstanding properties, including antibacterial and antifungal activity, anticorrosion properties, unique aggregation behaviour, the ability to form various structures reversibly in response to environmental conditions, and interactions with biomacromolecules such as DNA and proteins. These properties can be tailored by selecting the optimal structure of a gemini surfactant in terms of the nature and length of its alkyl substituents, spacer, and head group. Additionally, regarding their properties, comparison with their monomeric counterparts demonstrates that gemini surfactants have higher performance efficacy at lower concentrations. Hence, less material is needed, and the toxicity is lower. However, there are some limitations regarding their biocompatibility that have led researchers to develop amino acid-based and sugar-based gemini surfactants. Owing to their remarkable properties, cationic gemini surfactants are promising candidates for bioapplications such as drug delivery systems, gene carriers, and biomaterial surface modification.

Antimicrobial Activity of Gemini Surfactants with Ether Group in the Spacer Part

Due to their large possibility of the structure modification, alkylammonium gemini surfactants are a rapidly growing class of compounds. They exhibit significant surface, aggregation and antimicrobial properties. Due to the fact that, in order to achieve the desired utility effect, the minimal concentration of compounds are used, they are in line with the principle of greenolution (green evolution) in chemistry. In this study, we present innovative synthesis of the homologous series of gemini surfactants modified at the spacer by the ether group, i.e., 3-oxa-1,5-pentane-bis(N-alkyl-N,N-dimethylammonium bromides). The critical micelle concentrations were determined. The minimal inhibitory concentrations of the synthesized compounds were determined against bacteria Escherichia coli ATCC 10536 and Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538; yeast Candida albicans ATCC 10231; and molds Aspergillus niger ATCC 16401 and Penicillium chrysogenum ATCC 60739. We also investigated the relationship between antimicrobial activity and alkyl chain length or the nature of the spacer. The obtained results indicate that the synthesized compounds are effective microbicides with a broad spectrum of biocidal activity.

Biological and Physico-Chemical Characteristics of Arginine-Rich Peptide Gemini Surfactants with Lysine and Cystine Spacers

Ultrashort cationic lipopeptides (USCLs) and gemini cationic surfactants are classes of potent antimicrobials. Our recent study has shown that the branching and shortening of the fatty acids chains with the simultaneous addition of a hydrophobic N-terminal amino acid in USCLs result in compounds with enhanced selectivity. Here, this approach was introduced into arginine-rich gemini cationic surfactants. l-cystine diamide and l-lysine amide linkers were used as spacers. Antimicrobial activity against planktonic and biofilm cultures of ESKAPE (Enterococcus faecium, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Enterobacter spp.) strains and Candida sp. as well as hemolytic and cytotoxic activities were examined. Moreover, antimicrobial activity in the presence of human serum and the ability to form micelles were evaluated. Membrane permeabilization study, serum stability assay, and molecular dynamics were performed. Generally, critical aggregation concentration was linearly correlated with hydrophobicity. Gemini surfactants were more active than the parent USCLs, and they turned out to be selective antimicrobial agents with relatively low hemolytic and cytotoxic activities. Geminis with the l-cystine diamide spacer seem to be less cytotoxic than their l-lysine amide counterparts, but they exhibited lower antibiofilm and antimicrobial activities in serum. In some cases, geminis with branched fatty acid chains and N-terminal hydrophobic amino acid resides exhibited enhanced selectivity to pathogens over human cells.

Gemini Surfactant as a Template Agent for the Synthesis of More Eco-Friendly Silica Nanocapsules

Silica mesoporous nanocapsules are a class of “smart” engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) applied in several fields. Recent studies have highlighted that they can exert deleterious effects into marine organisms, attributed to the use of the toxic cationic surfactant N-hexadecyl-N,N,N-trimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) during the synthesis of ENMs. The present study reports the successful synthesis and characterization of novel gemini surfactant-based silica nanocapsules. The gemini surfactant 1,4-bis-[N-(1-dodecyl)-N,N-dimethylammoniummethyl]benzene dibromide (QSB2-12) was chosen as a more environmentally-friendly replacement of CTAB. Nanocapsules were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), dynamic light scattering (DLS), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and N2 adsorption-desorption isotherms. Short-term exposure effects of new ENMs were evaluated in four marine species (Nannochloropsis gaditana, Tetraselmis chuii and Phaeodactylum tricornutum) and the microcrustacean (Artemia salina). The replacement of the commercial cationic surfactant by the gemini surfactant does not change the structure nor the environmental behaviour in seawater of the newly synthesised silica nanocontainers. Additionally, it is demonstrated that using gemini surfactants can reduce the toxicity of novel silica nanocapsules towards the tested marine species. As a result, environmentally-friendly ENMs can be obtained based on a safe-by-design approach, thereby fitting the concept of Green Chemistry.

Antimicrobial Activity of Gemini Surfactants with Azapolymethylene Spacer

A series of 21 azapolymethylene gemini surfactants were obtained. The synthesis of the title surfactants in one- or two-step reaction proceeds with good yields. The structure and the purity of the synthesized compounds were determined by ¹H and ¹³C NMR, ESI-MS spectra, and elemental analysis. Moreover, 2D COSY, HMBC, and HSQC spectra were performed. The minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC) of the synthesized compounds were determined against fungi: Candida albicans, Aspergillus niger, Penicillium chrysogenum and bacteria: Escherichia coli,Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, and Bacillus subtilis. Also, the critical micelle concentrations (CMC) were determined. The relationship between antimicrobial and surface activity and surfactant structure has been determined.

Surface Activities, Antibacterial Activity and Corrosion Inhibition Properties of Gemini Quaternary Ammonium Surfactants with Amido Group and Carboxylic Counterions

A series of gemini quaternary ammonium surfactants containing carboxylate counterion with the formula C₁₇H₃₅CONH(CH₂)₂N⁺(CH₃)₂(CH₂)₂N⁺(CH₃)₂(CH₂)₂ NHCO C₁₇H₃₅·2Y (Y=HCOO^-, CH₃COO^-, CH₃CHOHCOO^-) have been synthesized by a counterion conversion process and characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and mass spectroscopy. It is found that these surfactants reduce the surface tension of water to a minimum value of 26.78 mN·m^-1 at a concentration of 1.21 ×10^-5 mol·L^-1. TEM images reveal that aggregates with vesicles or tubular structure are spontaneously formed in these surfactants aqueous solution with the concentration of 1×10^-3 mol·L^-1. It is also found that they are effective corrosion inhibitors for A3 steel in acid solution and have superior antibacterial activity at a concentration of 0.1g·L^-1.

Environmental behaviour and ecotoxicity of cationic surfactants towards marine organisms

Cationic surfactants are surface-active compounds that can be found in many products, including household and cleaning agents. As a consequence, they tend to be discarded into water streams, ultimately ending up in the aquatic environment. In spite of this environmental issue, studies describing their effects towards marine species are lacking. The aim of this study was therefore to evaluate the short-term exposure effects of two commercial cationic surfactants and three novel gemini surfactants on four marine species, the green microalgae Nannochloropsis gaditana and Tetraselmis chuii, the diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum, and the crustacean Artemia salina. Furthermore, biodegradation and size distribution of the cationic surfactants in artificial seawater were also studied by UV-vis spectrophotometry and dynamic light scattering, respectively. Ecotoxicity tests revealed that the commercial cationic surfactant N-cetyl-N,N,N-trimethylammonium bromide is toxic to all tested marine species while N-dodecyl-N,N,N-trimethylammonium chloride and 1,4-bis-[N-(1-dodecyl)-N,N-dimethylammoniummethyl]benzene dibromide showed the lowest toxicity among the tested cationic surfactants. Besides the novel insights regarding the effects caused by these five cationic surfactants, this work opens prospects for the replacement of commercially available surfactants by more environmentally friendly alternatives.

Poly(Oxyethylene)-Amidoamine Based Gemini Cationic Surfactants for Oilfield Applications: Effect of Hydrophilicity of Spacer Group

Thermal stability, salt tolerance, and solubility in normal and high salinity brine are the major requirements for any surfactant designed for oilfield applications because the surfactant stays in a non-ambient environment inside the reservoir for a long period of time. Herein, a series of new gemini cationic surfactants (GSs) with varying spacer hydrophilicity were synthesized and elucidated using MALDI-ToF-MS, NMR (1H, 13C), as well as FTIR spectroscopy. GSs found to be soluble in normal as well as high salinity brine and aqueous stability tests revealed that GSs possess the ability to retain their structural integrity at high salinity and high temperature conditions because no suspension formation or precipitation was detected in the oven aged sample of GSs at 90 °C for 30 days. Thermal gravimetric analysis displayed a higher decomposition temperature than the real reservoir temperature and the GS with a secondary amine spacer exhibited high heat stability. The significant reduction in surface tension and critical micelle concentration was observed using 1 M NaCl solution in place of deionized water. The difference in surface tension and critical micelle concentration was insignificant when the 1 M NaCl solution was replaced with seawater. The synthesized surfactants can be utilized for oilfield applications in a challenging high temperature high salinity environment.

Evolution of diffusion and structure of six n-alkanes in carbon dioxide at infinite dilution over wide temperature and pressure ranges: a molecular dynamics study

Over wide temperature and pressure ranges, the molecular dynamics simulation is performed to study the mass transfer of six n-alkanes from n-C₅H₁₂ to n-C₁₀H₂₂ in CO₂ at infinite dilution by calculating the diffusion coefficients, which have not yet been measured by experiment. Meanwhile, the structural properties of these systems are explored. It is found that under different temperature and pressure conditions, the variation trends of the radial distribution functions of n-alkanes are quite different, while the variation trends of the average coordination number of n-alkanes can be divided into three types. The radius of gyration and the solvent accessible surface area are both affected by temperature and carbon chain length, but their variation trends are different, and it could explain the abnormal variation trends of the radial distribution functions and the average coordination number. Graphical abstract Over wide temperature and pressure ranges, the variation trends of the average coordination number of n-alkanes can be divided into three types.

Surface and thermal properties of synthesized cationic poly(ethylene oxide) gemini surfactants: the role of the spacer

The solubility and heat stability of surfactants are the prerequisites for their oilfield applications. Most commercial surfactants undergo hydrolysis at high temperature and prolonged heating at 40 °C or above leads to decomposition. In this report, three cationic poly(ethylene oxide) gemini surfactants (GSs) containing flexible and rigid spacers were synthesized for oilfield applications. The chemical structures of the GSs were elucidated with the aid of ¹³C NMR, ¹H NMR, FT-IR, and MALDI-TOF MS. The GSs exhibit pronounced solubility in deionized water, seawater, and formation brine and no cloudiness, phase separation, or precipitation were detected after keeping GS solutions in an oven at 90 °C for three weeks. According to thermal gravimetric analysis, the degradation temperature of all the GSs was above 240 °C, which is higher than the existing oilfield temperature (≥90 °C). The critical micelle concentration (CMC) of the synthesized GSs decreases upon increasing the temperature. Additionally, CMC values were observed to increase even further with increasing salinity. The low CMC values of gemini surfactants containing a flexible structure indicate that they create a more closely packed micelle structure compared with gemini surfactants with a rigid structure. The distinct surface and thermal features of the synthesized GSs reveal them to be appropriate materials for high salinity and elevated temperature reservoirs.

Synthesis of new cationic poly(ethylene oxide) gemini surfactants containing flexible and rigid spacer groups to tolerate harsh reservoir condition.

Biodegradability and aquatic toxicity of new cleavable betainate cationic oligomeric surfactants

New cleavable oligomeric cationic surfactants containing ester groups susceptible to hydrolysis between the hydrocarbon tails and the hydrophilic moiety have been synthesized and their biodegradability and aquatic toxicity examined. Aerobic biodegradability was evaluated by applying a standard method for ready biodegradability, the CO₂ Headspace test. Aquatic toxicity was assessed by means of the acute toxicity test with Daphnia. Cleavable oligomeric cationic surfactants undergo a significant biodegradation extent (31-52%) as compared to dimeric surfactants without ester groups that showed null degradation in previous works. However, they do not attain the threshold of ultimate degradation required (60%) to be classed as easily biodegradable chemicals. On the other hand, the introduction of cleavable groups in the surfactant hydrophobic chains reduces the toxic effects on the microorganisms responsible for degradation observed for conventional alkyl ammonium dimeric surfactants. Acute toxicity values of betainate cationic oligomeric surfactants to Daphnia magna, IC₅₀-48 h, varies from 1.5 to 50 mg/L. Aquatic toxicity of oligomeric cationic surfactants depends on their hydrophobicity and increases regularly with the alkyl chain length. However, whether the surfactant is a dimeric or a trimeric betaine ester does not affect their acute toxicity to crustacean.

Controllable assembly of a novel cationic gemini surfactant containing a naphthalene and amide spacer with β-cyclodextrin

A novel cationic gemini surfactant (C12NDDA) with a spacer containing naphthalene and amides was successfully synthesized. The assembly of C12NDDA with β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) was investigated using various techniques including transmission electron microscopy, proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR), and scanning electron microscopy. Tuning the C12NDDA concentration and the C12NDDA/β-CD molar ratio allowed the production of different assembled aggregate morphologies such as micelles, vesicles, nanowires, nanorods, and hydrogels. Investigation of the inclusion mechanisms of C12NDDA and β-CD by 1H NMR revealed that hydrophobic interactions, hydrogen bonding, π-π stacking, and electrostatic forces play key roles in the assembly process. The antimicrobial activities of the C12NDDA/xβ-CD (x = 0-4) inclusion complexes were tested against Gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli and Salmonella) and Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus), and very low minimum inhibitory concentrations of 0.078-0.31 μg mL-1 were observed. Thus, this newly synthesized gemini surfactant and its inclusion complexes exhibit potential as superior broad-spectrum disinfectants for various biomedical and biotechnological applications.

Quaternary Alkylammonium Salts as Cleaning and Disinfectant Agents

Monomeric and dimeric quaternary alkylammonium salts are a wide group of cationic surfactants with prominent surface, biocidal and anticorrosion properties. The methods of synthesis, structure and behavior in solution of these compounds is presented in the article. Antimicrobial activity, biodegradability, toxicity, aquatoxicity and hemolytic activity of quaternary alkylammonium salts is discussed. The preparation, application and antimicrobial activity of cleaning and disinfectant products containing alkylammonium salts are described in details. A special attention has been devoted to EU regulations concerning biocidal products. The alkylammonium salts that can be used in biocidal products, placed on the list in Article 95 of the Biocidal Products Regulation (BPR) are given. Maximum residue limits (MRL) for didecyldimethylammonium chloride and benzalkonium chloride are given and commented.

A multifunctional supramolecular hydrogel: preparation, properties and molecular assembly

A novel supramolecular hydrogel was designed and constructed by molecular self-assembly of a cationic gemini surfactant, 1,3-bis(N,N-dimethyl-N-cetylammonium)-2-propylacrylate dibromide (AGC₁₆), and an anionic aromatic compound, trisodium 1,3,6-naphthalenetrisulfonate (NTS). Owing to its unique structure, the hydrogel (abbreviated as AGC₁₆/NTS) has the potential to be used as a multifunctional drug delivery system. The structure and properties of AGC₁₆/NTS were characterized by rheological measurements, differential scanning calorimetry, variable-temperature ¹H nuclear magnetic resonance, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, variable-temperature fluorescence emission spectroscopy, cryogenic scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction methods. The rheological and DSC analysis results revealed that the gel AGC₁₆/NTS was formed below 57 °C. It was found from UV-vis, fluorescence and ¹H NMR spectroscopy characterization that aromatic π-π stacking and hydrophobic forces were indispensable to the formation of AGC₁₆/NTS. The Cryo-SEM and TEM observation results indicated that gelators AGC₁₆ and NTS self-assembled into one-dimensional fibers which further tightly intertwined to form a three-dimensional network structure. Based on the spectroscopic data and X-ray diffraction measurement results, a self-assembly model was proposed, helping to further understand the molecular self-assembly mechanism of AGC₁₆/NTS. It was also found that the electrostatic force, hydrophobic force and π-π interaction were the three main driving forces for the gelation. The multiple non-covalent interactions between AGC₁₆ and NTS endowed the hydrogel with excellent performance when the hydrogel was used as a carrier for drug delivery, due to multiple micro-domains within the same gel system. We further investigated the encapsulation and releasing properties of the hydrogel, using the hydrophobic model drug curcumin (Cur) and the model drug naproxen sodium (Npx) with aromatic ring structure. The fluorescence spectroscopy analysis confirmed that Npx was carried through aromatic π-π stacking and the ¹H NMR measurement result revealed that Cur was encapsulated within the hydrophobic cavities of AGC₁₆/NTS through hydrophobic interaction. Moreover, the drug release study results showed a sustained release of drugs from the hydrogel, indicating good application prospects in exploring new multifunctional drug delivery systems.
