Application of polyethylene glycol based aqueous two-phase systems for extraction of heavy metals

Thermodynamic and structural investigation of oily wastewater treatment using peach kernel and walnut shell based activated carbon

Despite the many articles about activated carbon with different precursors in adsorption process, no in-depth research has been carried out to understand the causes of the difference in surface adsorption characteristics of activated carbon with different precursors and different activation processes. In this work, the ability of two active carbon adsorbents made of walnut shell and peach kernel by two chemical and physical methods (totally 4 different types of activated carbon) in treatment of oily wastewater including diesel, gasoline, used oil or engine lubricant has been compared. The results show that the chemical activated peach carbon active with 97% hardness has provided the highest hardness and physical activated walnut carbon active has obtained the lowest hardness value (87%). It is also found that peach activated carbon has a higher iodine number than walnut activated carbon, and this amount can be increased using chemical methods; Therefore, the highest amount of Iodine Number is related to Peach activated carbon that is made by chemical method (1230 mg/g), and the lowest amount of iodine number is seen in walnut activated carbon that is made by physical method (1020 mg/g). moreover, the pore diameter of physical activated carbon is lower than chemical activated carbon in all cases. So that the pore diameter of chemical activated peach carbon active is equal to 22.08 μm and the measured pore diameter of physical activated peach carbon active is equal to 20.42 μm. These values for walnut are obtained as 22.74 μm and 21.86 μm, respectively. Furthermore, the temperature and pH effects on the adsorption of different synthesized oily wastewater was studied and it was found that a decrease in adsorption can be seen with an increase in temperature or decreasing the pH value, which can be referred to this fact that the process of adsorption is an exothermic process. Finally, to analyze the compatibility of adsorption isotherms with experimental data and to predict the adsorption process, three different isotherms named Langmuir, Temkin, and Freundlich isotherms were applied and their parameters were correlated. The correlation results show that the Langmuir isotherm had the best correlation in all cases compared to the Freundlich and Temkin isotherms, based on the correlation coefficient, and the calculated R2 values which was greater than 0.99 in all the studied cases.

Isotherms, kinetics and thermodynamic mechanism of methylene blue dye adsorption on synthesized activated carbon

The treatment of methylene blue (MB) dye wastewater through the adsorption process has been a subject of extensive research. However, a comprehensive understanding of the thermodynamic aspects of dye solution adsorption is lacking. Previous studies have primarily focused on enhancing the adsorption capacity of methylene blue dye. This study aimed to develop an environmentally friendly and cost-effective method for treating methylene blue dye wastewater and to gain insights into the thermodynamics and kinetics of the adsorption process for optimization. An adsorbent with selective methylene blue dye adsorption capabilities was synthesized using rice straw as the precursor. Experimental studies were conducted to investigate the adsorption isotherms and models under various process conditions, aiming to bridge gaps in previous research and enhance the understanding of adsorption mechanisms. Several adsorption isotherm models, including Langmuir, Temkin, Freundlich, and Langmuir-Freundlich, were applied to theoretically describe the adsorption mechanism. Equilibrium thermodynamic results demonstrated that the calculated equilibrium adsorption capacity (qe) aligned well with the experimentally obtained data. These findings of the study provide valuable insights into the thermodynamics and kinetics of methylene blue dye adsorption, with potential applications beyond this specific dye type. The utilization of rice straw as an adsorbent material presents a novel and cost-effective approach for MB dye removal from wastewater.

Phase-separation multiphase flow: preliminary application to analytical chemistry

A two-phase separation mixed solution can undergo phase separation from one phase to two phases (i.e., upper and lower phases) in a batch vessel in response to changes in temperature and/or pressure. This phase separation is reversible. When the mixed solution undergoes a phase change while being fed into a microspace region, a dynamic liquid-liquid interface is formed, leading to a multiphase structure. This flow is called a phase-separation multiphase flow. Annular flow in a microspace, which is one such phase-separation multiphase flow, is interesting and has been applied to chromatography, extraction, reaction fields, and mixing. Here, research papers related to phase-separation multiphase flows-ranging from the discovery of the phenomenon to basic and technical research from the viewpoint of analytical science-are reviewed. In addition, the development of a new separation mode in a high-performance liquid chromatography system based on phase-separation multiphase flow is introduced.

Raman spectroscopy and molecular dynamics simulations of aqueous two-phase systems for the purification of phosphoric acid

In this work, Raman spectroscopy and molecular dynamics simulations were used to elucidate key interactions between polyethylene glycol (PEG) and phosphoric acid (H3PO4) in aqueous two-phase systems for the extraction of phosphoric acid. Extensive molecular dynamics simulations were performed, and radial distribution functions as well as hydrogen bonds between PEG and other molecules were measured. Experimental data were used in combination with the slope method to infer PEG-H3PO4 interactions, and the interpretation is consistent with molecular simulation results. Based on our experimental and simulation results, we propose a solvation mechanism governed by hydrogen bonding interactions: at low concentrations of H3PO4 within the polymer-rich aqueous solution, entropy dominates and phosphoric acid molecules have weak interactions with PEG; as the concentration of phosphoric acid increases above a certain critical value, enthalpy dominates with PEG molecules interacting strongly with H3PO4 molecules via hydrogen bonds.

Investigating the Water Relations in Aqueous Extract Powders of Mango (Mangifera indica) Peel and Seed Waste for Their Use in Food Matrices as a Value-Added By-Product

This study investigated the potential uses of discarded mango peel and seed parts by analyzing their water sorption behavior, hydration kinetics, and stability when converted into extract powders at pH 3 and 10. The results revealed that peel extracts had a higher water adsorption capacity compared with seed extracts due to differences in their composition. Peel extracts were primarily composed of carbohydrates (approximately 75%) with a low protein content, while seed extracts contained fewer carbohydrates (less than 30%) but higher levels of proteins (more than 30%) and lipids. The critical water content for maintaining the glassy state of peel extract powders during storage was found to be 0.025 and 0.032 g of water/g for extracts obtained at pH 3 and 10, respectively. In contrast, the Tg values of seed extracts remained relatively unchanged across different water content levels, suggesting that proteins and lipids inhibited the water's plasticizing effect in the solid matrix. These findings indicate that both mango waste fractions exhibit distinct hygroscopic behaviors, necessitating different approaches to processing and utilization. These extracts hold potential applications for various food products such as beverages, gels, sauces, or emulsions, contributing to the reduction in waste and the creation of value-added products from mango residues.

Observation of the phase-separation multiphase flow using a polyethylene glycol/phosphate mixed solutions and the aqueous two-phase distribution of red blood cells in the flow system

Phase-separation multiphase flow at a liquid-liquid interface was successfully formed in an aqueous two-phase system of polyethylene glycol/phosphate mixed solutions when fed into a microchannel (100 µm wide and 40 µm deep) on a microchip and a fused-silica capillary tube (100 µm ID). As one example, tube radial distribution flow (annular flow) was observed when 10.0 wt% polyethylene glycol 6000 and 8.5 wt% dipotassium hydrogen phosphate aqueous solution containing 1.0 mM Rhodamine B was fed at 40 ℃, recorded by bright field microscopy. It exhibited a dipotassium hydrogen phosphate-rich inner phase and polyethylene glycol-rich outer phase. Effects of conditions including composition, flow rate, viscosity, and contact angle on tube radial distribution flow were analyzed. It was found out that although the viscosity of PEG-rich solution was much higher than that of phosphate-rich one, the phase configuration in tube radial distribution flow did not necessarily obey the viscous dissipation law in untreated microchannel and capillary tube, as well as for all the types of PEG/phosphate mixed solution the PEG-rich solution occupied the outer phase near the ODS-treated inner wall of both microchannel and capillary tube against the law. To assess the use of microfluidic flow in applications, we examined the distribution of red blood cells in the inner and outer phases fed into double capillary tubes with different inner diameters. Cell distribution was found to concentrate in the inner (dipotassium hydrogen phosphate-rich) phase compared to the outer (polyethylene glycol-rich) phase at a ratio of 1.8.

Thermo-induced inversion of water-in-water emulsion stability by bis-hydrophilic microgels

HYPOTHESIS

Stabilization of water-in-water (W/W) emulsions resulting from the separation of polymeric phases such as dextran (DEX) and poly(ethyleneoxide) (PEO) is highly challenging, because of the very low interfacial tensions between the two phases and because of the interface thickness extending over several nanometers. In the present work, we present a new type of stabilizers, based on bis-hydrophilic, thermoresponsive microgels, incorporating in the same structure poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (pNIPAM) chains having an affinity for the PEO phase and dextran moieties. We hypothesize that these particles allow better control of the stability of the W/W emulsions.

EXPERIMENTS

The microgels were synthesized by copolymerizing the NIPAM monomer with a multifunctional methacrylated dextran. They were characterized by dynamic light scattering, zeta potential measurements and nuclear magnetic resonance as a function of temperature. Microgels with different compositions were tested as stabilizers of droplets of the PEO phase dispersed in the DEX phase (P/D) or vice-versa (D/P), at different concentrations and temperatures.

FINDINGS

Only microgels with the highest DEX content revealed excellent stabilizing properties for the emulsions by adsorbing at the droplet surface, thus demonstrating the fundamental role of bis-hydrophilicity. At room temperature, both pNIPAM and DEX chains were swollen by water and stabilized better D/P emulsions. However, above the volume phase transition temperature (VPTT ≈ 32 °C) of pNIPAM the microgels shrunk and stabilized better P/D emulsions. At all temperatures, excess microgels partitioned more to the PEO phase. The change in structure and interparticle interaction induced by heating can be exploited to control the W/W emulsion stability.

Recent advances and applications of cyclodextrins in magnetic solid phase extraction

Cyclodextrins (CDs) as a family of cyclic oligosaccharides are toroidal with a hydrophobic interior and a hydrophilic exterior. They are well-known for their ability to form host-guest inclusion complexes with different compounds. They are used as chiral stationary phases in high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and gas chromatography (GC) or as chiral reagents in the background electrolyte of capillary electrophoresis (CE). In recent years, they have been used for modification of sorbents or as sorbents in solid phase extraction (SPE) procedures. Magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE), as a new type of SPE procedure, has received considerable attention due to its rapid phase separation process as compared to traditional extraction mode. This review covers the synthesis of CD-based magnetic sorbents (such as immobilization of CDs onto the different supports, production of nanosponges, and making hybrid substances with nanomaterials) and the use of these compounds in MSPE of different analytes from biological, environmental, and food samples. Also, prospects of CD-based sorbents for sample pre-treatment are also proposed.

Immunostaining Extracellular Vesicles Based on an Aqueous Two-Phase System: For Analysis of Tetraspanins

Immunostaining of extracellular vesicles (EVs) has become necessary for the characterization of EV subtypes, clarification of the EV biogenesis/cellular uptake pathway, drug delivery, etc. Immunostained EVs must be in suspension for further downstream analyses or uses. However, conventional EV immunostaining methods yielding EVs in suspension lack either sufficient recovery or staining specificity because of the washing steps. In this study, we have devised and tested a method to wash immunostained EVs with successive aqueous two-phase system (ATPS) separations. The ATPS is a liquid-liquid extraction procedure that ensures a gentle separation of target molecules. The ATPS has been successfully employed to separate EVs from other impurities with high yield and high purity. Immunostained EVs were washed with the ATPS and compared with other immunostaining methods to confirm the proposed method's high EV recovery and staining accuracy. According to the result, the ATPS-based EV immunostaining method required as low as ∼1 μg without compromise of accuracy and recovery.

Connecting primitive phase separation to biotechnology, synthetic biology, and engineering

One aspect of the study of the origins of life focuses on how primitive chemistries assembled into the first cells on Earth and how these primitive cells evolved into modern cells. Membraneless droplets generated from liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) are one potential primitive cell-like compartment; current research in origins of life includes study of the structure, function, and evolution of such systems. However, the goal of primitive LLPS research is not simply curiosity or striving to understand one of life's biggest unanswered questions, but also the possibility to discover functions or structures useful for application in the modern day. Many applicational fields, including biotechnology, synthetic biology, and engineering, utilize similar phaseseparated structures to accomplish specific functions afforded by LLPS. Here, we briefly review LLPS applied to primitive compartment research and then present some examples of LLPS applied to biomolecule purification, drug delivery, artificial cell construction, waste and pollution management, and flavor encapsulation. Due to a significant focus on similar functions and structures, there appears to be much for origins of life researchers to learn from those working on LLPS in applicational fields, and vice versa, and we hope that such researchers can start meaningful cross-disciplinary collaborations in the future.

Evolution of Environmentally Friendly Strategies for Metal Extraction

The demand for the recovery of valuable metals and the need to understand the impact of heavy metals in the environment on human and aquatic life has led to the development of new methods for the extraction, recovery, and analysis of metal ions. With special emphasis on environmentally friendly approaches, efforts have been made to consider strategies that minimize the use of organic solvents, apply micromethodology, limit waste, reduce costs, are safe, and utilize benign or reusable materials. This review discusses recent developments in liquid- and solid-phase extraction techniques. Liquid-based methods include advances in the application of aqueous two- and three-phase systems, liquid membranes, and cloud point extraction. Recent progress in exploiting new sorbent materials for solid-phase extraction (SPE), solid-phase microextraction (SPME), and bulk extractions will also be discussed.

Emerging aqueous two-phase systems: from fundamentals of interfaces to biomedical applications

This review summarizes recent advances of aqueous two-phase systems (ATPSs), particularly their interfaces, with a focus on biomedical applications.

Complex Extraction of Metals in an Aqueous Two-Phase System Based on Poly(Ethylene Oxide) 1500 and Sodium Nitrate

This article presents an ecologically safe aqueous two-phase system based on poly(ethylene oxide) with a molecular weight of 1500, designed for complex extraction of Ni(II), Co(II), Fe(III), Mn(II), Zn(II), Cu(II), and Al(III) from nitrate solutions. A kinetic dependence has been investigated for a distribution ratio for the metals examined. The influence of pH-values, temperature, initial metal concentration, and nitric acid content have on the extraction of a wide range of metals in the heterogeneous poly(ethylene oxide) 1500-NaNO₃-H₂O system has been discovered. As a result, the complex extraction of metals (E_Me > 60%) was achieved in one step of extraction without introducing additional chemicals into the system.

Phase Inversion of Silica Particle-Stabilized Water-in-Water Emulsions

An aqueous two-phase system (ATPS) is of great value in low calorie foods or oil-free cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. In contrast to the recent work on polymer/polymer ATPSs, a simple polymer/salt ATPS (polyethylene glycol/Na₂SO₄) was chosen to study water-in-water (w/w) emulsions stabilized by solid particles. The binodal curve and the tie lines were first determined for the mixture at room temperature. Above the binodal curve, two water-based phases coexist; the upper phase is rich in polymer, whereas the lower phase is rich in salt. Within the two-phase region, we attempted to prepare w/w emulsions with or without the addition of common emulsifiers. Ionic and nonionic surfactants, a polymer, and various solid particles (hydrophilic calcium carbonate particles of different sizes and shapes, wax microspheres) were selected, but no stable emulsion was possible. However, stable w/w emulsions of both types (polymer-in-salt and salt-in-polymer) were formed using dichlorodimethylsilane-modified nanosilica particles. Using partially hydrophobic fumed silica as the emulsifier, emulsions remained fully emulsified for over 1 year and we link the extent of hydrophobization of particles to the properties of the emulsions via contact angle measurements. Furthermore, systematic emulsion studies were conducted at different overall compositions such that changes in emulsion type and stability were mapped onto the phase diagram. Catastrophic phase inversion of emulsion type and evolution of emulsion stability were monitored along the tie lines. Importantly, stability to coalescence was found to decrease approaching conditions of phase inversion.

Selective separation of Cu, Ni and Ag from printed circuit board waste using an environmentally safe technique

Printed circuit boards (PCBs) make up a large part of e-waste and include high concentrations of high-value metals. Therefore, the recovery of these metals is interesting from both the environmental and economic points of view. Here, the extraction/separation of copper, nickel and silver from PCB leachate was studied using an aqueous two-phase system (ATPS) formed by triblock copolymers with an electrolyte and water, which is in compliance with the principles of green chemistry. The best conditions for the selective extraction consisted of 1-(2-pyridylazo)-2-naphthol (3.5 mmol kg^-1) at pH = 6.0 in 6 sequential steps for the Cu(II), dimethylglyoxime (5.00 mmol kg^-1) at pH = 9.0 for the Ni(II) and thiocyanate (5.20 mmol kg^-1) at pH = 9.0 for the Ag(I). These conditions were applied sequentially for extraction of Cu, Ni and Ag from the PCB leachate, obtaining high separation factor (S) values between the analyte and the metallic concomitants (S_Cu,Ni = 1,460, S_Cu,Fe = 15,500, S_Cu,Ag = 15,900, S_Ni,Fe = 32,700, S_Ni,Ag = 34,700 and S_Ag,Fe = 4800). The maximum extraction percentages (%E) for Cu, Ni and Ag were 99.9%, 99.9% and 99.8%, respectively. After the extraction, a single step stripping process was performed, resulting in more than 82% of the ion available in a clean lower phase. For the first time, an ATPS has been used for sequential extraction of several metal analytes from a real sample.

Phase Separation Multi-phase Flow Using an Aqueous Two-phase System of a Polyethylene Glycol/Dextran Mixed Solution

Polyethylene glycol/dextran mixed solution as an aqueous two-phase system was fed into a fused-silica capillary tube under different conditions, resulting in phase transformation leading to phase separation multi-phase flow through/along a liquid-liquid interface. As one flow-type example, when 6.4 wt% polyethylene glycol and 9.7 wt% dextran aqueous solution containing 1.0 mM Rhodamine B was fed into the capillary tube at 3°C, tube radial distribution flow (annual flow) was observed through bright-field microscopy. Tube radial distribution flow consisted of a dextran-rich inner phase and polyethylene glycol-rich outer phase. We also examined the distribution of proteins, such as bovine serum albumin, hemoglobin, and lysozyme, in the inner and outer phases through use of double capillary tubes with different inner diameters. The protein distribution was greater in the inner (dextran-rich) phase than the outer (polyethylene glycol-rich) phase. The distribution ratios of the three proteins (ratio of the inner/outer protein concentration) were 2.3, 4.2, and 1.8, respectively. The proteins concentrated in the dextran-rich phase through tube radial distribution flow of a polyethylene glycol/dextran mixed solution.
