Biohybrid Adsorbent for the Preconcentration of Lead and Its Determination in Fruit Juices by Electrothermal Atomic Absorption Spectrometry

BACKGROUND

Fruit juices are one of the most non-alcoholic beverages consumed in the world. Essential elements and other nutrients present in fruit juices play an important role in human well-being. However, fruit juices may also contain potentially toxic elements at trace levels, causing health risks.

OBJECTIVE

The objective of this work was to develop an analytical methodology based on the preconcentration of lead using a new biodegradable hybrid material (BHM) composed of Rhodococcus erythropolis AW3 bacteria and Brassica napus hairy roots.

METHODS

The BHM was implemented in an online solid-phase extraction (SPE) system for the determination of lead in fruit juices by electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry (ETAAS).

RESULTS

Effects of critical parameters on lead retention were studied. Under optimal experimental conditions, extraction efficiency higher than 99.9% and an enrichment factor of 62.5 were achieved. The dynamic capacity of the BHM was 36 mg/g, which favored the reuse of the column for at least eight biosorption-desorption cycles. The LOD and LOQ for preconcentration of 5 mL of sample were 5.0 and 16.5 ng/L lead, respectively. The RSD was 4.8% (at 1 µg/L lead and n = 10).

CONCLUSION

The developed method was suitable for application to lead determination in different types of fruit juice.

Preconcentration and Removal of Pb(II) Ions from Aqueous Solutions Using Graphene-Based Nanomaterials

Direct determination of lead trace concentration in the presence of relatively complex matrices is often a problem. Thus, its preconcentration and separation are necessary in the analytical procedures. Graphene-based nanomaterials have attracted significant interest as potential adsorbents for Pb(II) preconcentration and removal due to their high specific surface area, exceptional porosities, numerous adsorption sites and functionalization ease. Particularly, incorporation of magnetic particles with graphene adsorbents offers an effective approach to overcome the separation problems after a lead enrichment step. This paper summarizes the developments in the applications of graphene-based adsorbents in conventional solid-phase extraction column packing and its alternative approaches in the past 5 years.

A novel thiourea derivative for preconcentration of copper(II), nickel(II), cadmium(II), lead(II) and iron(II) from seawater samples for Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry

A novel adsorbent, 3-phenyl-1-(2-pyridyl)thiourea (PPTU) was synthesized and its adsorption capabilities were studied for Cu(II), Cd(II), Ni(II), Pb(II) and Fe(II) cations in the waters such as tap and polluted seawaters. The kinetics, Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms were discussed related to the adsorptions. The adsorption capacities of PPTU were found 9.4; 12.6; 90.9; 57.1 and 30.4 mg g^-1 and preconcentration with PPTU including the FAAS step yielded the LOQ values 0.46; 2.65; 1.12; 2.65 and 1.72 ng mL^-1 for Cu(II), Cd(II), Ni(II), Pb(II) and Fe(II), respectively. The adsorbent after the elutions and washings could be reused three times in the next adsorptions. The interferences on the adsorptions arising from the major cations of the seawater and the usability of PPTU for interested metals in the seawater were discussed. The proposed method is simple with highly efficient and green preconcentration procedure for trace analysis of the target metal ions.

Utilization of Phyllanthus emblica fruit stone as a Potential Biomaterial for Sustainable Remediation of Lead and Cadmium Ions from Aqueous Solutions

In the present work, an effort has been made to utilize Phyllanthus emblica (PE) fruit stone as a potential biomaterial for the sustainable remediation of noxious heavy metals viz. Pb(II) and Cd(II) from the aqueous solution using adsorption methodology. Further, to elucidate the adsorption potential of Phyllanthus emblica fruit stone (PEFS), effective parameters, such as contact time, initial metal concentration, temperature, etc., were investigated and optimized using a simple batch adsorption method. It was observed that 80% removal for both the heavy metal ions was carried out within 60 min of contact time at an optimized pH 6. Moreover, the thermodynamic parameters results indicated that the adsorption process in the present study was endothermic, spontaneous, and feasible in nature. The positive value of entropy further reflects the high adsorbent-adsorbate interaction. Thus, based on the findings obtained, it can be concluded that the biosorbent may be considered a potential material for the remediation of these noxious impurities and can further be applied or extrapolated to other impurities.

Novel ditopic 2-mercaptothiazoles and their sodium salts: synthesis, structural diversity and luminescence

Preparation of melon peel biochar/CoFe2O4 as a new adsorbent for the separation and preconcentration of Cu(II), Cd(II), and Pb(II) ions by solid-phase extraction in water and vegetable samples

The present research describes the successful preparation of melon peel biochar modified with CoFe₂O₄ (MPBC/CoFe₂O₄) followed by its usage as a new sorbent to separate, preconcentrate, and determine the toxic heavy metal ions by magnetic solid-phase extraction. The metal ion desorption was performed by 0.1 M HCl solution with a volume of 5.0 mL. Flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS) was utilized for detection of the analyte levels. SEM-EDX, TEM, XRD, and FTIR techniques were carried out to illuminate the structure of MPBC/CoFe₂O₄. The fundamental variables affecting the adsorption and elution efficiencies of the analyte ions including solution pH, MPBC/CoFe₂O₄ amount, type and concentration of eluent, adsorption and desorption equilibrium time, and sample volume were optimized. The detection limits were calculated as 0.41, 1.82, and 3.16 µg L^-1 for Cu²⁺, Cd²⁺, and Pb²⁺ ions, respectively, with the relative standard deviation of lower than 4.2%. There were no substantial interference effects on the analyte ion recovery due to the presence of foreign ions at high levels. Five minutes of contact time was adequate to attain the adsorption equilibrium. The adsorption capacity of MPBC/CoFe₂O₄ was obtained as 106.4, 65.4, and 188.7 mg g^-1 for Cu²⁺, Cd²⁺, and Pb²⁺ ions, respectively, by utilizing Langmuir isotherm model. The pseudo-second order model is favorable to identify the adsorption kinetics. The method was validated by spike/recovery test, and then, it was successfully implemented to determine the aforementioned analyte levels in sea and stream water, pepper, black cabbage, eggplant, and tomato samples.

Modern Approaches to the Synthesis and Transformations of Practically Valuable Benzothiazole Derivatives

The review is devoted to modern trends in the chemistry of 2-amino and 2-mercapto substituted benzothiazoles covering the literature since 2015. The reviewed heterocycles belong to biologically active and industrially demanded compounds. Newly developed synthesis methods can be divided into conventional multistep processes and one-pot, atom economy procedures, realized using green chemistry principles and simple reagents. The easy functionalization of the 2-NH2 and 2-SH groups and the benzene ring of the benzothiazole moiety allows considering them as highly reactive building blocks for organic and organoelement synthesis, including the synthesis of pharmacologically active heterocycles. The review provides a summary of findings, which may be useful for developing new drugs and materials and new synthetic approaches and patterns of reactivity.

One-step synthesis of cake-like biosorbents from plant biomass for the effective removal and recovery heavy metals: Effect of plant species and roles of xanthation

The continuous production of plant wastes and heavy metal pollution of waters have become widespread unavoidable challenges. Reutilization of plant wastes to treat toxic metal-contaminated water is an eco-friendly way to simultaneously solve these problems. Herein, three cake-like biosorbents were synthesized from tea waste, trimmed lawn grass and Nephrolepis cordifolia leaves through a one-step xanthation modification method combined with lyophilization, respectively. The plant species affected the appearance, structure and mechanical strength of the biosorbents due to the different contents of hydrocarbons and inorganic substances, which influenced the gel-like degree and thus the ability of the particles to pack between water molecules. The maximum adsorption capacities of the modified materials for Pb(II), Cu(II) and Cd(II) were 247.20, 85.80 and 265.31 mg/g, respectively, far higher than those of the original wastes, and the adsorption was selective. These results were mainly attributed to newly introduced -(CS)-S-Na groups, which triggered ion exchange, complexation and microprecipitation between heavy metal ions and functional groups. As-prepared biosorbents owned an excellent regenerability, which contributed to recovery heavy metals. The physicochemical properties and adsorption performances of the modified materials indicated that xanthation is a universal modification method suited to different plant biomasses with great potential to purify heavy metal-contaminated water. These biosorbents with excellent separability and regenerability might be promising for continuous-flow sewage treatment.

The synthesis, characterization, and theoretical analysis of novel Si-substituted silylethyl derivatives of 2-mercaptobenzoxazole and 2-mercaptobenzothiazole

Trifluorosilylethyl derivatives of 2-mercaptobenzoxazole and 2-mercaptobenzothiazole C₆H₄NYCS(CH₂)₂SiF₃ (Y = O, S) have been synthesized in order to study the intramolecular N → Si interaction in compounds with the SiCCSCN fragment.

Sample Preparation Using Graphene-Oxide-Derived Nanomaterials for the Extraction of Metals

Graphene oxide is a compound with a form similar to graphene, composed of carbon atoms in a sp2 single-atom layer of a hybrid connection. Due to its significant surface area and its good mechanical and thermal stability, graphene oxide has a plethora of applications in various scientific fields including heterogenous catalysis, gas storage, environmental remediation, etc. In analytical chemistry, graphene oxide has been successfully employed for the extraction and preconcentration of organic compounds, metal ions, and proteins. Since graphene oxide sheets are negatively charged in aqueous solutions, the material and its derivatives are ideal sorbents to bind with metal ions. To date, various graphene oxide nanocomposites have been successfully synthesized and evaluated for the extraction and preconcentration of metal ions from biological, environmental, agricultural, and food samples. In this review article, we aim to discuss the application of graphene oxide and functionalized graphene oxide nanocomposites for the extraction of metal ions prior to their determination via an instrumental analytical technique. Applications of ionic liquids and deep eutectic solvents for the modification of graphene oxide and its functionalized derivatives are also discussed.

Ceria nanoparticles deposited on graphene nanosheets for adsorption of copper(II) and lead(II) ions and of anionic species of arsenic and selenium

A nanocomposite prepared from graphene nanosheets and cerium nanoparticles (G/CeO₂) was applied to the extraction of Se(IV), As(V), As(III), Cu(II) and Pb(II). The structure of G/CeO₂ was investigated by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. The optimal pH values for extraction are 4.0 for As(V), 3.0 for Se(IV), and 6.0 for both Cu(II) and Pb(II). The maximum adsorption capacity of G/CeO₂ (expressed as mg·g⁻¹) were calculated by the Langmuir model and are found to be 8.4 for As(V), 14.1 for Se(IV), 50.0 for Cu(II) and 75.6 for Pb(II). The sorbent was applied to dispersive solid phase microextraction prior to direct quantitation by energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry without the need for prior elution. The limits of detection (in ng·mL⁻¹ units) are 0.10 for As(V), 0.11 for Se(IV), 0.19 for Cu(II) and 0.21 for Pb(II). The precisions (RSDs) are <4.5%. The accuracy of the method (1 - 4%) was verified by analysis of the certified reference material (CRM 1640a - natural water). The method was successfully applied in ultratrace element determination and to the speciation of selenium in environmental waters.
