Inulin-folic acid/bentonite: A novel nanocomposite for confiscation of Cu(II) from synthetic and industrial wastewater

Synthesis of magnetic bentonite-gelatin hydrogel beads and their applications in Cu2+ capturing

Heavy metal ions that exist in groundwater and farmland jeopardize the ecological environment and are very difficult to remove because of the complicated actual environment. Raw bentonite-gelatin beads (RB-GT) and magnetic bentonite-gelatin beads (MB-GT) synthesized in this work would be an appropriate tool to solve this problem. Those beads are synthesized by a facile hybrid injection method. Their adsorption behaviors on Cu(II) ions were systematically investigated using the batch adsorption method. The beads were characterized by scan electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The adsorption isotherm and adsorption kinetic study showed that the Cu2+ adsorption by MB-GT beads fitted the Langmuir model and the pseudo-second model. The adsorption maximum capacities reached 192.5 mg/g and 236.5 mg/g with Cu concentration of 1000 mg/L for RB-GT and MB-GT beads, respectively. The competitive adsorption with other heavy metal ions (Ni(II), Pd(II) and Cd(II)) were compared. The adsorption of Cu(II) mechanisms is also further discussed.

Fabrication of alginate@silver nanoparticles (Alg@AgNPs) bionanocomposite for the sequestration of crystal violet dye from aqueous solution

In the present study, alginate@silver nanoparticles (Alg@AgNPs) bionanocomposite has been fabricated successfully and further explored for the removal of crystal violet (CV) dye from the aqueous solution. The surface morphology of the (Alg@AgNPs) bionanocomposite was characterized by various modern analytical techniques such as SEM-EDX, TEM, FTIR and XRD. The maximum adsorption was observed at optimum condition of (pH 7, adsorbent dose 0.01 g, equilibrium time 240 min and initial concentration 20 mg L^-1). The maximum monolayer adsorption capacity was found to be 186.93 mg g^-1 at 30 °C. The experimental data were further validated by various isotherm models and on the basis of highest correlation coefficient (R², 0.99), Langmuir model was found to be best fitted model. Pseudo-second order kinetic model obeyed best for the experimental data with a highest correlation coefficient (R², 0.99) at all studied temperature. In thermodynamic studies, the positive value of enthalpy change (∆H⁰) and entropy change (∆S⁰) confirmed the process to be endothermic and spontaneous in nature. Desorption studies shows that 83 % of the adsorbed CV can be desorbed in first cycle and can be regenerated up to 4th cycle effectively with 0.1 M HCl. Therefore, (Alg@AgNPs) bionanocomposite could be harnessed as a potential adsorbent for the removal of hazardous CV dye from the waste water.

Laccase-loaded magnetic dialdehyde inulin nanoparticles as an efficient heterogeneous natural polymer-based biocatalyst for removal and detoxification of ofloxacin

An efficient heterogeneous natural polymer-based biocatalyst was fabricated through the immobilization of laccase onto dialdehyde inulin (DAI)-coated silica-caped magnetic nanoparticles (laccase@DAI@SiO₂@Fe₃O₄⋅MNPs). The carrier was developed using SiO₂@Fe₃O₄⋅MNPs and functionalized with DAI. The construction of immobilized laccase was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Immobilization yield and efficiency were calculated as 61.0 ± 0.3% and 93.0 ± 0.6%, respectively. The immobilized laccase maintained 50% and 85% of its relative activity after 25 repeated cycles and 20 days of storage at 4 °C, respectively. The prepared biocatalyst effectively eliminated ofloxacin, a fluoroquinolone-type antibiotic, with a 63% removal capacity. Besides, antimicrobial activity study on some soil microorganisms involved in the biodegradation of xenobiotics revealed that the laccase-treated ofloxacin resulted in less toxic metabolites. The obtained data indicated that the fabricated biocatalyst is promising for the removal of ofloxacin or other analogs of fluoroquinolones in the environment.

The advantages of clay mineral modification methods for enhancing adsorption efficiency in wastewater treatment: a review

This review discusses the recent trends in the research over the last 30 years to use clay minerals in natural and modified forms for removing different toxic organic/inorganic pollutants. The natural and modified forms of clay minerals have an exceptional ability to remove different contaminants. However, the modification methods can improve the clay mineral adsorption properties that consequently increase more adsorption sites and functional groups to adsorb different environmental pollutants. This review shows the importance of modification methods and more extension of novel clay preparation based on nanotechnology which could raise the control of pollution. The syntheses of functionalized clays such as pillared clays and porous clay heterostructures introduce the new class of heterostructure materials with high adsorption capacity, capability, and selectivity. Due to the acceptable properties of heterostructure materials including high specific surface area, thermal and mechanical stability, and the existence of multifunctional groups to selective adsorption, this review collects more literature of research related to environmental protection issues. However, it is expected much attention to get a better understanding of the adsorption mechanism, regeneration, and recovery process of these materials.

Sequestration of toxic congo red dye from aqueous solution using ecofriendly guar gum/ activated carbon nanocomposite

In the present study, a potential Guar gum/activated carbon nanocomposite as an adsorbent was synthesized and utilized for the sequestration of toxic congo red dye from synthetic wastewater. The nanocomposite was characterized using different techniques such as SEM, EDX, TEM, FTIR and XRD. Various physico-chemical parameters such as influence of contact time, pH, adsorbent dose, temperature and initial dye concentration were investigated to optimize conditions for maximum adsorption of congo red. Equilibrium data fitted well with Langmuir isotherm model having maximum adsorption capacity of 831.82 mgg-1 at 313 K. The kinetic studies demonstrated that the adsorption followed a pseudo-second order kinetic model. The thermodynamic study showed that the adsorption of congo red onto nanocomposite was spontaneous, exothermic with decreased in randomness at solid/liquid interface. The regeneration study indicated that the nanocomposite could be reused successfully upto five consecutive cycles. Therefore, the present material can be effectively and efficiently urilized for the removal of congo red dye from aqueous solution as well as industrial wastewater.

A multi-functional-group modified cellulose for enhanced heavy metal cadmium adsorption: Performance and quantum chemical mechanism

Heavy metal contamination directly threatened human life and health. In this work, a novel carboxyl, amide, carbonyl sulfide and secondary amino group grafted cellulose derivative adsorbent (modified-cellulose) was prepared in an attempt to remove heavy metal Cd²⁺. The XRD, FTIR, ¹³C NMR and XPS results showed that the carboxyl, amide, carbonyl sulfide and secondary amino group were grafted onto the cellulose backbone successfully. Effects of various factors on the adsorption performance were investigated as well as the adsorption mechanism. The Cd²⁺ adsorption capacity of modified-cellulose was pretty good, up to 401.1 mg/g and with 3 times enhancement. The adsorption process was spontaneous, well described by the Freundlich model (R² = 0.994), confirmed to the pseudo-second-order model (R² > 0.997), and mainly controlled by chemisorption. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicating that the Cd²⁺ binding ability of multi-functional groups modified cellulose was stronger than that of single-functional group modified cellulose. The preferential adsorption sites were analyzed based on the frontier orbital theory (FOT), and they were concentrated on the secondary amino groups and carbonyl sulfides. It is foreseeable that the as-prepared modified-cellulose adsorbent has great potential in heavy metal cadmium removal, and our conclusions could provide significant theoretical guidance in the due bioresource utilization.
