Influence of methanol and dimethyl sulfoxide and temperature on the micellization of cetylpyridinium chloride

Thermo-sensitive self-assembly of poly(ethylene imine)/(phenylthio) acetic acid ion pair in surfactant solutions

Poly(ethylene imine)/(phenylthio) acetic acid (PEI/PTA) ion pairs exhibited an upper critical solution temperature (UCST) behavior in an aqueous solution and the UCST was higher as the PTA content was more. The UCST of the ion pair decreased with increasing Brij S100 (BS 100, a nonionic surfactant) concentration but increased with increasing cetylpridinium chloride (CPC, a cationic surfactant) and sodium lauroylsarcosinate (SLS, an anionic surfactant) concentration. TEM microscopy demonstrated BS 100 markedly reduced the size of PEI/PTA ion pair self-assembly (IPSAM) whereas CPC and SLS had little effect on the size and the integrity of IPSAM. ¹H NMR spectroscopy showed the hydrophobic interaction among the phenyl groups of PEI/PTA ion pairs took place. It also demonstrated the hydrophobic interaction between BS 100 and PTA and the electrostatic interaction between CPC and PTA and between SLS and PEI occurred. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy disclosed the PTA of PEI/PTA IPSAM could be readily oxidized by H₂O₂ even at a low concentration (e.g. 0.005%). IPSAM released its payload (i.e. nile red) in a temperature and oxidation-responsive manner. The surfactants (i.e. BS 100, CPC, and SLS) suppressed the thermally triggered release in a different way. The effectiveness of the surfactant to suppress the release was in the order of BS 100 > CPC > SLS. IPSAM released its content more extensively as H₂O₂ (an oxidizing agent) concentration was higher. The ionic surfactants (i.e. CPS and SLS) had little effect on the oxidation-induced release degree but the nonionic surfactant (BS 100) markedly suppressed the release degree.

Cetylpyridinium chloride promotes disaggregation of SARS-CoV-2 virus-like particles

Background

SARS-CoV-2 is continuously disseminating worldwide. The development of strategies to break transmission is mandatory.

Aim of the study

To investigate the potential of cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) as a viral inhibitor.

Methods

SARS-CoV-2 Virus Like-Particles (VLPs) were incubated with CPC, a potent surfactant routinely included in mouthwash preparations.

Results

Concentrations of 0.05% CPC (w/v) commonly used in mouthwash preparations are sufficient to promote the rupture of SARS-CoV-2 VLP membranes.

Conclusion

Including CPC in mouthwashes could be a prophylactic strategy to keep SARS-CoV-2 from spreading.

Spirobifluorene-based polymers of intrinsic microporosity for the adsorption of methylene blue from wastewater: effect of surfactants

Owing to their high surface area and superior adsorption properties, spirobifluorene polymers of intrinsic microporosity (PIMs), namely PIM-SBF-Me (methyl) and PIM-SBF-tBu (tert-butyl), were used for the first time, to our knowledge, for the removal of methylene blue (MB) dye from wastewater. Spirobifluorene PIMs are known to have large surface area (can be up to 1100 m2 g-1) and have been previously used mainly for gas storage applications. Dispersion of the polymers in aqueous solution was challenging owing to their extreme hydrophobic nature leading to poor adsorption efficiency of MB. For this reason, cationic (cetyl-pyridinium chloride), anionic (sodium dodecyl sulfate; SDS) and non-ionic (Brij-35) surfactants were used and tested with the aim of enhancing the dispersion of the hydrophobic polymers in water and hence improving the adsorption efficiencies of the polymers. The effect of surfactant type and concentration were investigated. All surfactants offered a homogeneous dispersion of the polymers in the aqueous dye solution; however, the highest adsorption efficiency was obtained using an anionic surfactant (SDS) and this seems owing to the predominance of electrostatic interaction between its molecules and the positively charges dye molecules. Furthermore, the effect of polymer dosage and initial dye concentration on MB adsorption were also considered. The kinetic data for both polymers were well described by a pseudo-second-order model, while the Langmuir model better simulated the adsorption process of MB dye on PIM-SBF-Me and the Freundlich model was more suitable for PIM-SBF-tBu. Moreover, the maximum adsorption capacities recorded were 84.0 and 101.0 mg g-1 for PIM-SBF-Me and PIM-SBF-tBu, respectively. Reusability of both polymers was tested by performing three adsorption cycles and the results substantiate that both polymers can be effectively re-used with insignificant loss of their adsorption efficiency (%AE). These preliminary results suggested that incorporation of a surfactant to enhance the dispersion of hydrophobic polymers and adsorption of organic contaminants from wastewater is a simple and cost-effective approach that can be adapted for many other environmental applications.

Cetylpyridinium chloride produces increased zeta-potential on Salmonella Typhimurium cells, a mechanism of the pathogen's inactivation

Cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) is a quaternary ammonium sanitizer approved for fresh poultry animal carcass sanitization from microbial human pathogens, such as Salmonella enterica. Nonetheless, the interactions of CPC with Salmonella cells, and the mechanism of the sanitizer's neutralization by lecithin remains largely unknown. This study aimed to investigate the interaction of CPC with lecithin and Salmonella Typhimurium to determine the interactions of the sanitizer and neutralizer impacting the bacterium's survival. Application of 0.8% CPC is proposed to produce loss of microbial membrane integrity with loss of electrostatic repulsion between individual cells, resulting in the eventual emulsification of membrane lipids with cytoplasmic contents leakage. Our findings point to a two-phase interaction between CPC and lecithin impacting S. Typhimurium survival. The first consists of electrostatic attraction and charge neutralization between oppositely charged components of pathogen cell and CPC. The second involves formation of aggregates between sanitizer and pathogen, or between sanitizer, pathogen membrane lipids, and lecithin.

An Interaction of Anionic- and Cationic-Rich Mixed Surfactants in Aqueous Medium through Physicochemical Properties at Three Different Temperatures

The mixed micellization of aqueous binary mixtures of DTAB-rich and SDS-rich surfactants, comprising sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB) is studied in aqueous solution by using the physicochemical properties (PCPs) at three different temperatures (T = 293.15, 298.15, and 303.15 K) and P=0.1  MPa. The DTAB concentration is varied from 0.0001 to 0.03 M/mol·L−1 in the ∼0.01 M/mol·L−1 SDS solution, while the concentration of SDS is varied from 0.001 to 0.015 M/mol·L−1 in the ∼0.005 M/mol·L−1 DTAB. The stable formulations have been obtained by employing the DTAB-rich and SDS-rich surfactants solutions in 3 : 1 ratio. Therefore, different phases and aggregated states formed in the ternary combinations of DTAB/SDS/H2O have been identified and described. The calculated PCPs have been utilized for determining the nature of the solute-solvent interaction (SLS0I). With increasing surfactants concentration, the polarisation of the solution also increases along with an increase in relative viscosity (ηr), viscous relaxation time (τ), and surface excess concentration (Γmax). However, the surface area of the molecule (Amin), hydrodynamic volume (Vh), and hydrodynamic radius (Rh) decrease along with an increase in surfactants concentration.
