Investigation of the conduction properties of ionic liquid crystal electrolyte used in dye sensitized solar cells

Xenon Diffusion in Ionic Liquids with Blurred Nanodomain Separation

The dynamics of xenon gas, loaded in a series of 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium based ionic liquids, probes the formation of increasingly blurred polar/apolar nanodomains as a function of the anion type and the cation chain length. Exploiting ¹²⁹ Xe NMR spectroscopy techniques, like Pulse Gradient Spin Echo (PGSE) and inversion recovery (IR), the diffusion motion and relaxation times are determined for 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide [C_n C₁ im][TFSI]. A correlation between the ILs nano-structure and both xenon diffusivity and relaxation times, as well as chemical shifts, is outlined. Interestingly, comparison with previous results of the same properties in the homologous imidazolium chlorides and hexafluorophospate shows an opposite trend with the alkyl chain length. Classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are used to calculate the xenon and cation and anion diffusion coefficients in the same systems, including imidazolium cations with longer chains (n=4, 6, 8 … 20). An almost quantitative agreement with the experiments validates the MD simulations and, at the same time, provides the necessary structural and dynamic microscopic insights on the nano-segregation and diffusion of xenon in bistriflimide, chloride and hexafluorphosphate salts allowing to observe and rationalize the shaping effect of the cation in the nanostructure.

Functional Ionic Liquid Crystals

Ionic liquid crystals have emerged as a new class of functional soft materials in the last two decades, and they exhibit synergistic characteristics of ionic liquids and liquid crystals such as macroscopic orientability, miscibility with various species, phase stability, nanostructural tunability, and polar nanochannel formation. Owing to these characteristics, the structures, properties, and functions of ionic liquid crystals have been a hot topic in materials chemistry, finding various applications including host frameworks for guest binding, separation membranes, ion-/proton-conducting membranes, reaction media, and optoelectronic materials. Although several excellent review articles of ionic liquid crystals have been published recently, they mainly focused on the fundamental aspects, structures, and specific properties of ionic liquid crystals, while these applications of ionic liquid crystals have not yet been discussed at one time. The aim of this feature article is to provide an overview of the applications of ionic liquid crystals in a comprehensive manner.

Low temperature glass/crystal transition in ionic liquids determined by H-bond vs. coulombic strength

Self-assembled ionic liquid crystals are anisotropic ionic conductors, with potential applications in areas as important as solar cells, battery electrolytes and catalysis. However, many of these applications are still limited by the lack of precise control over the variety of phases that can be formed (nematic, smectic, or semi/fully crystalline), determined by a complex pattern of different intermolecular interactions. Here we report the results of a systematic study of crystallization of several imidazolium salts in which the relative contribution of isotropic coulombic and directional H-bond interactions is carefully tuned. Our results demonstrate that the relative strength of directional H-bonds with respect to the isotropic Coulomb interaction determines the formation of a crystalline, semi-crystalline or glassy phase at low temperature. The possibility of pinpointing H-bonding directionality in ionic liquids make them model systems to study the crystallization of an ionic solid under a perturbed Coulomb potential.

Fluorenone imidazolium salts as novel de Vries materials

In ionic liquid crystals (ILCs) tilted mesophases such as SmC required for electro-optic devices are quite rare. We report a design concept that induced the SmC phase and enabled de Vries-like behaviour in ILCs. For this purpose, we synthesized and characterized a library of ILC derivatives ImR(On,Ym)X which consist of a rigid central fluorenone core containing an alkoxy or thioether side chain and connected via a flexible spacer to an imidazolium head group. The mesomorphic properties were studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarizing optical microscopy (POM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Temperature-dependent measurements of smectic layer spacing d by small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and of optical tilt angles by POM demonstrate that ILCs ImR(On,Ym)X undergo SmA–SmC phase transitions with maximum layer contraction values between 0.4% and 2.1%. The lowest reduction factor R of 0.2 at the reduced temperature T − T_AC = −10 K was calculated for Im(O12,S14)Br. Electron density calculations indicated a bilayer structure. Furthermore, temperature dependent emission studies show that self-assembling has a strong influence on the emission intensity of these ILCs.

Influence of the ion size on the stability of the smectic phase of ionic liquid crystals

The thermotropic phase behavior of ionic liquids and ionic liquid crystals based on novel N-alkyl-3-methylpyridinium halides, trihalides and dichloroiodates was experimentally studied by polarized optical spectroscopy (POM) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) as well as by molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. In the experiments, the existence and thermal range of stability of the smectic phase of these ionic liquid crystals are found to strongly depend on the volume ratio between the cation and anion, that is their relative size. Only compounds with a relatively large volume ratio of the cation to anion, i.e., those with longer cationic alkyl chains and monoatomic halide anions, have a stable smectic A phase. Both melting points and clearing points increase with such a ratio. The MD simulation results qualitatively agree very well with the experimental data and provide molecular details which can explain the experimentally observed phenomena: the stronger van der Waals interactions from the longer alkyl chains and the stronger electrostatic interactions from the smaller anions with a higher charge density increase the stability of both the crystal phase and the smectic phase; this also prevents the ionic layers from easily mixing with the hydrophobic regions, a mechanism that ultimately leads to a nanosegregated isotropic liquid phase.
