Strategies of functionalized GelMA-based bioinks for bone regeneration: Recent advances and future perspectives

Gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA) hydrogels is a widely used bioink because of its good biological properties and tunable physicochemical properties, which has been widely used in a variety of tissue engineering and tissue regeneration. However, pure GelMA is limited by the weak mechanical strength and the lack of continuous osteogenic induction environment, which is difficult to meet the needs of bone repair. Moreover, GelMA hydrogels are unable to respond to complex stimuli and therefore are unable to adapt to physiological and pathological microenvironments. This review focused on the functionalization strategies of GelMA hydrogel based bioinks for bone regeneration. The synthesis process of GelMA hydrogel was described in details, and various functional methods to meet the requirements of bone regeneration, including mechanical strength, porosity, vascularization, osteogenic differentiation, and immunoregulation for patient specific repair, etc. In addition, the response strategies of smart GelMA-based bioinks to external physical stimulation and internal pathological microenvironment stimulation, as well as the functionalization strategies of GelMA hydrogel to achieve both disease treatment and bone regeneration in the presence of various common diseases (such as inflammation, infection, tumor) are also briefly reviewed. Finally, we emphasized the current challenges and possible exploration directions of GelMA-based bioinks for bone regeneration.

Biodegradable Electrospun Conduit with Aligned Fibers Based on Poly(lactic-co-glycolic Acid) (PLGA)/Carbon Nanotubes and Choline Bitartrate Ionic Liquid

Functionally active aligned fibers are a promising approach to enhance neuro adhesion and guide the extension of neurons for peripheral nerve regeneration. Therefore, the present study developed poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA)-aligned electrospun mats and investigated the synergic effect with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and Choline Bitartrate ionic liquid (Bio-IL) on PLGA fibers. Morphology, thermal, and mechanical performances were determined as well as the hydrolytic degradation and the cytotoxicity. Results revealed that electrospun mats are composed of highly aligned fibers, and CNTs were aligned and homogeneously distributed into the fibers. Bio-IL changed thermal transition behavior, reduced glass transition temperature (Tg), and favored crystal phase formation. The mechanical properties increased in the presence of CNTs and slightly decreased in the presence of the Bio-IL. The results demonstrated a decrease in the degradation rate in the presence of CNTs, whereas the use of Bio-IL led to an increase in the degradation rate. Cytotoxicity results showed that all the electrospun mats display metabolic activity above 70%, which demonstrates that they are biocompatible. Moreover, superior biocompatibility was observed for the electrospun containing Bio-IL combined with higher amounts of CNTs, showing a high potential to be used in nerve tissue engineering.

Fabricating Well-Dispersed Poly(Vinylidene Fluoride)/Expanded Graphite Composites with High Thermal Conductivity by Melt Mixing with Maleic Anhydride Directly

Maleic anhydride (MA) is introduced to fabricate poly(vinylidene fluoride)/expanded graphite (PVDF/EG) composites via one-step melt mixing. SEM micrographs and WAXD results have demonstrated that the addition of MA helps to exfoliate and disperse the EG well in the PVDF matrix by promoting the mobility of PVDF molecular chains and enhancing the interfacial adhesion between the EG layers and the PVDF. Thus, much higher thermal conductivities are obtained for the PVDF/MA/EG composites compared to the PVDF/EG composites that are lacking MA. For instance, The PVDF/MA/EG composite prepared with a mass ratio of 93:14:7 exhibits a high thermal conductivity of up to 0.73 W/mK. It is 32.7% higher than the thermal conductivity of the PVDF/EG composite that is prepared with a mass ratio of 93:7. Moreover, the introduction of MA leads to an increased melting peak temperature and crystallinity due to an increased nucleation site provided by the uniformly dispersed EG in the PVDF matrix. This study provides an efficient preparation method for PVDF/EG composites with a high thermal conductivity.

Ionic Liquids as Alternative Curing Agents for Conductive Epoxy/CNT Nanocomposites with Improved Adhesive Properties

Good dispersion of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) together with effective curing were obtained in epoxy/CNT nanocomposites (NCs) using three different ionic liquids (ILs). Compared to conventional amine-cured epoxy systems, lower electrical percolation thresholds were obtained in some of the IL-based epoxy systems. For example, the percolation threshold of the trihexyltetradecylphosphonium dicyanamide (IL-P-DCA)-based system was 0.001 wt.%. The addition of CNTs was not found to have any significant effect on the thermal or low-strain mechanical properties of the nanocomposites, but it did improve their adhesive properties considerably compared to the unfilled systems. This study demonstrates that ILs can be used to successfully replace traditional amine-based curing agents for the production of electrically conductive epoxy/CNT NCs and adhesives, as a similar or better balance of properties was achieved. This represents a step towards greater sustainability given that the vapor pressure of ILs is low, and the amount needed to effectively cure epoxy resins is significantly lower than any of their counterparts.

Highly Enhancing Electrical, Thermal, and Mechanical Properties of Polypropylene/Graphite Intercalation Compound Composites by In Situ Expansion during Melt Mixing

Polypropylene/graphite intercalation compound (PP/GIC) composites are prepared via melt mixing at three different temperatures (180, 200, and 220 °C). The dispersion of GICs in the composites is clearly improved due to the increased interlamellar spacing caused by in situ expansion of GICs at higher temperatures, which facilitates the intercalation of PP molecular chains into the GIC galleries. As a result, the PP/GIC composite with 10 wt% GICs prepared at 220 °C (PG220) presents a dielectric constant of about 1.3 × 10⁸ at 10³ Hz, which is about six orders higher than that of the composite prepared at 180 °C (PG180). Moreover, the thermal conductivity of the PG220 sample (0.63 Wm^-1K^-1) is 61.5% higher than that of the PG180 sample. The well-dispersed GICs accelerates the crystallization of PP by increasing the nucleation point and enhances the thermal stability of the composites. The PG220 sample shows a Young's modulus that is about 21.2% higher than that of the PG180 samples. The results provide an efficient approach for fabricating polymer/GIC composites without complex exfoliation and dispersion processes.

Ionic Liquid as Dispersing Agent of LDH-Carbon Nanotubes into a Biodegradable Vinyl Alcohol Polymer

A Zn/Al layered double hydroxides (LDHs) hosting carbon nanotubes (80% of CNTs) was synthesized and dispersed into a commercial biodegradable highly amorphous vinyl alcohol polymer at different loading (i.e., 1; 3; 5; 10 wt %). In order to improve the degree of dispersion of the filler into the polymer matrix, an ionic liquid (IL) based on 1-hexadecyl-3-methylimidazolium dimethyl-5-sodiosulfoisophthalate was added to the composites’ mixtures. Structural characterization of filler and polymeric composites was carried out. The analysis of thermal, mechanical and electrical properties of the composites, resulted improved compared to the unfilled material, allowed to hypothesize a good dispersion of the LDH-CNTs lamellar filler into the polymer matrix-assisted by the ionic liquid. This was demonstrated comparing electrical conductivity of composite at 5% of LDH-CNTs in the presence and in the absence of IL. The experimental results showed that the electrical conductivity of the sample with IL is four orders of magnitude higher than the one without IL. Furthermore, the percolation threshold of the whole system resulted very low—0.26% of LDH-CNTs loading, which is 0.21% of CNTs.

Organometal-catalyzed synthesis of high molecular weight poly-(l-lactic acid) with a covalently attached imidazolium salt: performance-enhanced reduced graphene oxide–PLLA biomaterials

Herein, we report on the synthesis of imidazolium salt end-functionalized PLLA (PLLA-IS) and its application in the preparation of reduced graphene oxide–PLLA composites.
