Adsorption of 17α-ethynyl estradiol and β-estradiol on graphene oxide surface: An experimental and computational study

First-Principles Structure Search Study of 17-β-Estradiol Adsorption on Graphene

17-Beta-estradiol (E2), a steroid hormone synthesized from cholesterol, has various impacts on health and the environment. Currently, the gold standard for its measurement in the body is a conventional blood test (mass spectrometry), but carbon-based electrochemical sensors have been proposed as an alternative due to their advantages, such as rapid analysis time and sensitivity. To improve the atomic-level understanding of the interactions at the substrate surface, we performed density functional theory (DFT) simulations to study the nature of the adsorption of E2 on pristine graphene. Bayesian Optimization Structure Search (BOSS) was employed to reduce human bias in the determination of the most favorable adsorption configurations. Two stable adsorption minimum configurations were found. Analysis of their electronic properties indicates that E2 physisorbs on graphene. Embarking upon complex carbonaceous materials, the importance of finding all possible minimum candidates with automated structure search tools is highlighted. Computational investigations facilitate tailoring substrate materials with outstanding performance and applications in neuroscientific research, fertility monitoring, and clinical trials. Combining them with experimental research carries significant potential to advance sensor design beyond the current state-of-the-art.

Combining computational tools and experimental studies towards endocrine disruptors mitigation: A review of biocatalytic and adsorptive processes

The endocrine disruptors (EDCs) are an important group of emerging contaminants, and their mitigation has been a huge challenge due to their chemistry complexity and variety of these compounds. The traditional treatments are inefficient to completely remove EDCs, and adsorptive processes are the major alternative investigated on their removal. Also, the use of EDCs degrading enzymes has been encouraged due to ecofriendly approach of biocatalytic processes. This paper highlights the occurrence, classification, and toxicity of EDCs with special focus in the use of enzyme-based and adsorptive technologies in the elimination of EDCs from ambiental matrices. Numerous prior reviews have focused on the discussions toward these technologies. However, the literature lacks theoretical discussions about important aspects of these methods such as the mechanisms of EDCs adsorption on the adsorbent surface or the interactions between degrading enzymes - EDCs. In this sense, theoretical calculations combined to experimental studies may help in the development of more efficient technologies to EDCs mitigation. In this review, we point out how computational tools such as molecular docking and molecular dynamics have to contribute to the design of new adsorbents and efficient catalytic processes towards endocrine disruptors mitigation.

Sorption kinetics, isotherms and molecular dynamics simulation of 17β-estradiol onto microplastics

Microplastic is a new type of pollutant, which can act as a carrier for organic contaminants. It affects the migration and bioavailability of chemicals and potentially threatens the ecology. This work investigated the adsorption kinetics, isotherm and influencing factors of 17β-estradiol (E2) on three dominate microplastics. Then, used molecular dynamics (MD) simulation to analyze the adsorption mechanism. The results showed that E2 adsorption onto microplastics conformed well to the Pseudo-second-order kinetics and Redlich-Petersen isotherm model. The adsorption capacity of E2 on microplastics was polyethylene (PE) > polypropylene (PP) > polystyrene (PS). The small particle size of microplastics was conducive to the adsorption due to its large specific surface area. The thermodynamic parameters demonstrated the adsorption of E2 was a spontaneous and exothermic process, so low temperature was benefit for the adsorption. The MD simulation results indicated the adsorption of E2 on MPs belonged to surface adsorption. The order of E2 adsorption energy by three microplastics obtained by molecular dynamics simulation is consistent with the experimental results. This work may help to understand the molecular adsorption process and provide a theoretical basis for the combined ecotoxicity of microplastics.

Endocrine disrupting chemicals in the environment: Environmental sources, biological effects, remediation techniques, and perspective

Endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) have been identified as emerging contaminants, which poses a great threat to human health and ecosystem. Pesticides, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, dioxins, brominated flame retardants, steroid hormones and alkylphenols are representative of this type of contaminant, which are closely related to daily life. Unfortunately, many wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) do not treat EDCs as targets in the normal treatment process, resulting in EDCs entering the environment. Few studies have systematically reviewed the related content of EDCs in terms of occurrence, harm and remediation. For this reason, in this article, the sources and exposure routes of common EDCs are systematically described. The existence of EDCs in the environment is mainly related to human activities (Wastewater discharges and industrial activities). The common hazards of these EDCs are clarified based on available toxicological data. At the same time, the mechanism and effect of some mainstream EDCs remediation technologies (such as adsorption, advanced oxidation, membrane bioreactor, constructed wetland, etc.) are separately mentioned. Moreover, our perspectives are provided for further research of EDCs.

Assessment of fouling mechanisms on reverse osmosis (RO) membrane during permeation of 17α-ethinylestradiol (EE2) solutions

Fouling mechanisms are mainly caused by the deposition of organic compounds that reduce the removal efficiency on reverse osmosis (RO) membranes. It can be described by mathematical models. The aim of this study was to evaluate the membrane fouling and rejection mechanisms when aqueous solutions containing 17α-ethinylestradiol (EE2) in different concentrations are permeated at 5 and 10 bar in a bench-scale dead-end RO system. Adsorption tests were performed and the fouling mechanism was assessed by Hermia's model for solutions of EE2 at concentrations typically found in the environment (µg L^-1). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) has indicated the presence of EE2 on the fouled membrane surface. Membrane rejection of EE2 ranged from 90% to 98% and the main rejection mechanism was size exclusion at all experimental conditions. However, for the higher concentration of EE2 permeated at 5 and 10 bar, adsorption of 7 and 32 mg m^-2, respectively, also took place. The rejection was influenced by fouling and concentration polarisation. Fouled membranes present higher rejection of hydrophobic neutral compounds and the concentration polarisation reduces rejection. Hermia's model demonstrated that the permeation values fitted better the standard blocking filtration and cake filtration equations for describing fouling mechanism. This study showed that fouling also occurs in the TFC RO membrane after permeation of EE2, which corroborates with studies using other pollutants.

Preparation of lightweight daisy-like magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers via etching synergized template immobilization for enhanced rapid detection of trace 17β-estradiol

17β-estradiol (E2), as one of the pharmaceutical and personal care product, frequently contaminates environmental water as estrogen pollutant and possesses great risk to human survival as well as the sustainable development of the ecosystem. Herein, to achieve an effective adsorbent system for the selective removal of E2 from the environmental water, Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles are subjected to chemical etching to reduce the overall mass and then employed as carriers to prepare a novel type of lightweight daisy-like magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers (LD-MMIPs) adopting template immobilization strategy. The LD-MMIPs based etched magnetic nanoparticles not only exhibit light mass but also have plentiful imprinted sites in the etched channels, which significantly increases the adsorption capacity for E2. The daisy-like LD-MMIPs own strong magnetic responsiveness, well crystallinity, fast binding kinetics, high adsorption amount, and excellent selectivity. Moreover, combining with HPLC, the LD-MMIPs as adsorbents have been successfully used to specifically recognize and detect trace E2 in environmental water. Thus, the proposed LD-MMIPs with high adsorption capacity hold great potential in monitoring water pollution. Additionally, this work also provides an alternative strategy for improving the adsorption capacity of magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers through a convenient chemical etching technology.

Silver-Modified β-Cyclodextrin Polymer for Water Treatment: A Balanced Adsorption and Antibacterial Performance

Water pollution caused by organic pollutants and pathogenic microorganism is a critical issue. In this study, we reported a silver-modified β-cyclodextrin polymer (CD-CA/PDA-Ag) used for the removal of dyes and the suppression of microorganisms from water. In order to avoid silver nanoparticles agglomeration, the material was first coated with polydopamine (PDA) on β-cyclodextrin matrix, whose reducing catechol groups subsequently immobilized silver ions in situ to form uniformly dispersed silver nanoparticles. CD-CA/PDA-0.5Ag displayed a high adsorption capacity of methylene blue (535.93 mg/g), which is mainly attributed to electrostatic interactions, host-guest inclusions and π-π bond stacking effects. Furthermore, both diffusion inhibition zone tests and colony formation unit tests were investigated, which showed excellent antimicrobial capability on Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. auerus). Overall, CD-CA/PDA-Ag proved to have an excellent adsorption capacity and antibacterial performance, which provides a great potential in water purification.

Adsorption of 17α-Ethinyl Estradiol and Bisphenol A to Graphene-Based Materials: Effects of Configuration of Adsorbates and the Presence of Cationic Surfactant

Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) have attracted much attention in recent years. Graphene-based materials (GMs) have been deemed as excellent adsorbents for the removal of EDCs. The objective of the present study was to understand how the cationic surfactants (CTAB; cetyltrimethylammonium nitrate) affect the adsorption of EDCs (17α-ethinyl estradiol (EE2) and bisphenol A (BPA)) on graphene oxide (GO), reduced graphene oxides (RGOs), and the few-layered commercial graphene (CG). It was observed that the presence of CTAB showed different effects on the adsorption of EDCs to different GMs. The adsorption of EDCs on GO was enhanced because of the enhanced hydrophobicity of GMs after the adsorption of CTAB and the newly formed hemimicelles by the adsorbed CTAB, which could serve as the partition phase for EDCs. Moreover, the electron donor-acceptor interaction and cation bridging effect of the –NH4+ group of the adsorbed CTAB between EDCs and GMs could also enhance the adsorption of EDCs to GMs. With the increase of the extent of GM reduction, the adsorption enhancement by the presence of CTAB weakened. This could be attributed to the competition and pore blockage effect caused by the adsorbed CTAB. It is worth noting that the enhancement of CTAB on the adsorption of BPA to GMs was more profound than that of EE2. This is likely because the pore blockage effect plays a less important role in the adsorption of BPA due to its smaller molecular diameter and deformable structure.

Influence of microplastics occurrence on the adsorption of 17β-estradiol in soil

High levels of steroid estrogens are continuously detected in the soil environment, and even the concentration in vegetables and fruits has reached levels that have an impact on children's health, which has attracted growing attention. Moreover, microplastics (MPs) in the soil system are also of increasing concern worldwide. The effects of MPs on the adsorption of organic pollutants in soil systems, however, remain largely unexplored. In this study, MPs common in greenhouse vegetable soil (polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride and polystyrene) were selected to investigate the effect of MPs occurrence on the adsorption of 17β‑estradiol (E2) in soil under various conditions. The experimental results showed that the adsorption capacity of MPs to E2 is stronger than that of soil. Moreover, the occurrence of MPs in soil increased the adsorption capacity for E2, and the addition amount and aging of MPs enhanced the promotion effect. This enhancement indicated that the input of MPs into soil might reduce the mobility of E2 by improving the adsorption capacity of the soil. These results deepen the understanding of the adsorption behavior of E2 in the coexisting system of MPs and soil and provide a theoretical basis for E2 pollution control.

Bibliometric approach to the perspectives and challenges of membrane separation processes to remove emerging contaminants from water

The presence of contaminants in water is concerning due to the potential impacts on human health and the environment, and ingested contaminants cause harm in various ways. The conventional water treatment systems are not efficient to remove these contaminants. Therefore, novel techniques and materials for the removal of contaminants are increasingly being developed. The separation process using modified membranes can remove these micropollutants; therefore, they have attracted significant research attention. Among the materials used for manufacturing of these membranes, composites based on graphene oxide and reduced graphene oxide are preferred owing to their promising properties, such as mechanical resistance, thermal and chemical stability, antifouling capacity, water permeability, high thermal and electrical conductivity, high optical transmittance and high surface area. Membrane separation processes (MSP) can be used as secondary or tertiary treatment during the supply of wastewater. However, the efficient and accessible applications of these technologies are challenging. This study aims to demonstrate the main concepts of membrane separation processes and their application in the removal of emerging contaminants. This study reports bibliometric mapping, relevant data on studies using membranes as water treatment processes, and their viability in industrial applications. The main challenges and perspectives of these technologies are discussed in detail as well.
