Finding the Link Between Iranian EFL Teacher Motivation and Engagement via Ant Colony Optimization Algorithm and Fuzzy Decision Mode

Teacher motivation is considred as one of the most decisive factorts infulencing teacher functioing as well as students' achievement. Many variable can develop teacher motoivation. In this study, it is presumed that teacher engagement, comprising three facets of emotional, behavioral, and cognitive influence teacher motivation. To examine this hypothesis, this study takes the initiative to utiliuze an innovative artificial intelliengce (AI)-inspired approach called Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) technique. ACO is an artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm originating from natural phenomena. The concept originates from biology and physics and specifically from ants' movements. ACO has the ability to find the connections between inputs and outputs, and it can find the most influencing inputs. Motivation was the output of the study, and the inputs were three different engagement factors. Based on the results, ACO reached a high R-value meaning that it could predict the output with a high accuracy. The findings of this study substantiate the wide-ranging and multifacsted potentials of AI, in particular ACO, in studying and predicting human functioning in academic settings.

Empirical models for compressive and tensile strength of basalt fiber reinforced concrete

When molten magma solidifies, basalt fiber (BF) is produced as a byproduct. Due to its remaining pollutants that could affect the environment, it is regarded as a waste product. To determine the compressive strength (CS) and tensile strength (TS) of basalt fiber reinforced concrete (BFRC), this study will develop empirical models using gene expression programming (GEP), Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and Extreme Gradient Boosting (XG Boost). A thorough search of the literature was done to compile a variety of information on the CS and TS of BFRC. 153 CS findings and 127 TS outcomes were included in the review. The water-to-cement, BF, fiber length (FL), and coarse aggregates ratios were the influential characteristics found. The outcomes showed that GEP can accurately forecast the CS and TS of BFRC as compared to ANN and XG Boost. Efficiency of GEP was validated by comparing Regression (R2) value of all three models. It was shown that the CS and TS of BFRC increased initially up to a certain limit and then started decreasing as the BF % and FL increased. The ideal BF content for industrial-scale BF reinforcement of concrete was investigated in this study which could be an economical solution for production of BFRC on industrial scale.

Optimal pretreatment of plantain peel waste valorization for biogas production: Insights into neural network modeling and kinetic analysis

This work proposed a model for the substrate treatment stage of biogas production process in an anaerobic digestion system. Adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS), response surface method (RSM), and artificial neural network (ANN) were comparatively used in the simulation and modeling of the treatment process for improved biogas yield. Waste plantain peels were pretreated and used as substrate. FTIR and SEM results revealed that the pretreatment improved the substrate's desirable qualities. The amount of biogas yield was controlled by time, NaOH concentration, and temperature of the substrate pretreatment. Optimum pretreatment conditions obtained were a temperature of 102.7 °C, time of 31.7 min and NaOH concentration of 0.125 N. RSM, ANN, and ANFIS modeling techniques were proficient in simulating the biogas production, as evidenced by high R2values of 0.9281, 0.9850, and 0.9852, respectively. Furthermore, the values of the calculated error terms such as RMSE (RSM = 0.04799, ANN = 0.00969, and ANFIS = 0.00587) and HYBRID (RSM = 18.556, ANN = 0.803, and ANFIS = 0.0447) were low, indicating a satisfactory correlation between experimental and predicted values. Scrubbing of the biogas with caustic soda and activated charcoal increased the methane content to 94 %. The kinetics of the cumulative biogas yield were best fit with the Logistics and Modified Logistics models. The low C/N ratio in addition to the presence of potassium, nitrogen, and phosphorus suggested that the spent plantain peel slurry can be utilized as an agricultural fertilizer in crop production. The observations of this study therefore recommends the pre-treatment of biodigestion substrates as a key means to enhance beneficiation of methane production.

Modeling the CO2 separation capability of poly(4-methyl-1-pentane) membrane modified with different nanoparticles by artificial neural networks

Membranes are a potential technology to reduce energy consumption as well as environmental challenges considering the separation processes. A new class of this technology, namely mixed matrix membrane (MMM) can be fabricated by dispersing solid substances in a polymeric medium. In this way, the poly(4-methyl-1-pentene)-based MMMs have attracted great attention to capturing carbon dioxide (CO2), which is an environmental pollutant with a greenhouse effect. The CO2 permeability in different MMMs constituted of poly(4-methyl-1-pentene) (PMP) and nanoparticles was comprehensively analyzed from the experimental point of view. In addition, a straightforward mathematical model is necessary to compute the CO2 permeability before constructing the related PMP-based separation process. Hence, the current study employs multilayer perceptron artificial neural networks (MLP-ANN) to relate the CO2 permeability in PMP/nanoparticle MMMs to the membrane composition (additive type and dose) and pressure. Accordingly, the effect of these independent variables on CO2 permeability in PMP-based membranes is explored using multiple linear regression analysis. It was figured out that the CO2 permeability has a direct relationship with all independent variables, while the nanoparticle dose is the strongest one. The MLP-ANN structural features have efficiently demonstrated an appealing potential to achieve the highest accurate prediction for CO2 permeability. A two-layer MLP-ANN with the 3-8-1 topology trained by the Bayesian regulation algorithm is identified as the best model for the considered problem. This model simulates 112 experimentally measured CO2 permeability in PMP/ZnO, PMP/Al2O3, PMP/TiO2, and PMP/TiO2-NT with an excellent absolute average relative deviation (AARD) of lower than 5.5%, mean absolute error (MAE) of 6.87 and correlation coefficient (R) of higher than 0.99470. It was found that the mixed matrix membrane constituted of PMP and TiO2-NT (functionalized nanotube with titanium dioxide) is the best medium for CO2 separation.

The roles of artificial intelligence techniques for increasing the prediction performance of important parameters and their optimization in membrane processes: A systematic review

Membrane-based separation processes has been recently of significant global interest compared to other conventional separation approaches due to possessing undeniable advantages like superior performance, environmentally-benign nature and simplicity of application. Computational simulation of fluids has shown its undeniable role in modeling and simulation of numerous physical/chemical phenomena including chemical engineering, chemical reaction, aerodynamics, drug delivery and plasma physics. Definition of fluids can be occurred using the Navier-Stokes equations, but solving the equations remains an important challenge. In membrane-based separation processes, true perception of fluid's manner through disparate membrane modules is an important concern, which has been significantly limited applying numerical/computational procedures such s computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Despite this noteworthy advantage, the optimization of membrane processes using CFD is time-consuming and expensive. Therefore, combination of artificial intelligence (AI) and CFD can result in the creation of a promising hybrid model to accurately predict the model results and appropriately optimize membrane processes and phase separation. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive overview about the advantages of commonly-employed ML-based techniques in combination with the CFD to intelligently increase the optimization accuracy and predict mass transfer and the unfavorable events (i.e., fouling) in various membrane processes. To reach this objective, four principal strategies of AI including SL, USL, SSL and ANN were explained and their advantages/disadvantages were discussed. Then after, prevalent ML-based algorithm for membrane-based separation processes. Finally, the application potential of AI techniques in different membrane processes (i.e., fouling control, desalination and wastewater treatment) were presented.

ANFIS for prediction of epidemic peak and infected cases for COVID-19 in India

Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a continuing extensive incident globally affecting several million people's health and sometimes leading to death. The outbreak prediction and making cautious steps is the only way to prevent the spread of COVID-19. This paper presents an Adaptive Neuro-fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS)-based machine learning technique to predict the possible outbreak in India. The proposed ANFIS-based prediction system tracks the growth of epidemic based on the previous data sets fetched from cloud computing. The proposed ANFIS technique predicts the epidemic peak and COVID-19 infected cases through the cloud data sets. The ANFIS is chosen for this study as it has both numerical and linguistic knowledge, and also has ability to classify data and identify patterns. The proposed technique not only predicts the outbreak but also tracks the disease and suggests a measurable policy to manage the COVID-19 epidemic. The obtained prediction shows that the proposed technique very effectively tracks the growth of the COVID-19 epidemic. The result shows the growth of infection rate decreases at end of 2020 and also has delay epidemic peak by 40-60 days. The prediction result using the proposed ANFIS technique shows a low Mean Square Error (MSE) of 1.184 × 10^-3 with an accuracy of 86%. The study provides important information for public health providers and the government to control the COVID-19 epidemic.

Real-Time Facemask Detection for Preventing COVID-19 Spread Using Transfer Learning Based Deep Neural Network

The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted people’s livelihoods and hindered global trade and transportation. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the World Health Organization mandated that masks be worn to protect against this deadly virus. Protecting one’s face with a mask has become the standard. Many public service providers will encourage clients to wear masks properly in the foreseeable future. On the other hand, monitoring the individuals while standing alone in one location is exhausting. This paper offers a solution based on deep learning for identifying masks worn over faces in public places to minimize the coronavirus community transmission. The main contribution of the proposed work is the development of a real-time system for determining whether the person on a webcam is wearing a mask or not. The ensemble method makes it easier to achieve high accuracy and makes considerable strides toward enhancing detection speed. In addition, the implementation of transfer learning on pretrained models and stringent testing on an objective dataset led to the development of a highly dependable and inexpensive solution. The findings provide validity to the application’s potential for use in real-world settings, contributing to the reduction in pandemic transmission. Compared to the existing methodologies, the proposed method delivers improved accuracy, specificity, precision, recall, and F-measure performance in three-class outputs. These metrics include accuracy, specificity, precision, and recall. An appropriate balance is kept between the number of necessary parameters and the time needed to conclude the various models.

Neural-based modeling adsorption capacity of metal organic framework materials with application in wastewater treatment

We developed a computational-based model for simulating adsorption capacity of a novel layered double hydroxide (LDH) and metal organic framework (MOF) nanocomposite in separation of ions including Pb(II) and Cd(II) from aqueous solutions. The simulated adsorbent was a composite of UiO-66-(Zr)-(COOH)2 MOF grown onto the surface of functionalized Ni50-Co50-LDH sheets. This novel adsorbent showed high surface area for adsorption capacity, and was chosen to develop the model for study of ions removal using this adsorbent. A number of measured data was collected and used in the simulations via the artificial intelligence technique. Artificial neural network (ANN) technique was used for simulation of the data in which ion type and initial concentration of the ions in the feed was selected as the input variables to the neural network. The neural network was trained using the input data for simulation of the adsorption capacity. Two hidden layers with activation functions in form of linear and non-linear were designed for the construction of artificial neural network. The model's training and validation revealed high accuracy with statistical parameters of R2 equal to 0.99 for the fitting data. The trained ANN modeling showed that increasing the initial content of Pb(II) and Cd(II) ions led to a significant increment in the adsorption capacity (Qe) and Cd(II) had higher adsorption due to its strong interaction with the adsorbent surface. The neural model indicated superior predictive capability in simulation of the obtained data for removal of Pb(II) and Cd(II) from an aqueous solution.

Modelling and Prediction of Water Quality by Using Artificial Intelligence

Artificial intelligence methods can remarkably reduce costs for water supply and sanitation systems and help ensure compliance with the quality of drinking and wastewater treatment. Therefore, modelling and predicting water quality to control water pollution has been widely researched. The novelty of the proposed system is presented to develop an efficient operation of monitoring drinking water to ensure a sustainable and friendly green environment. In this work, the adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) algorithm was developed to predict the water quality index (WQI). Feed-forward neural network (FFNN) and K-nearest neighbors were applied to classify water quality. The dataset has eight significant parameters, but seven parameters were considered to show significant values. The proposed methodology was developed based on these statistical parameters. Prediction results demonstrated that the ANFIS model was superior for the prediction of WQI values. Nevertheless, the FFNN algorithm achieved the highest accuracy (100%) for water quality classification (WQC). Furthermore, the ANFIS model accurately predicted WQI, and the FFNN model showed superior robustness in classifying the WQC. In addition, the ANFIS model showed accuracy during the testing phase, with a regression coefficient of 96.17% for predicting WQI, and the FFNN model achieved the highest accuracy (100%) for WQC. This proposed method, using advanced artificial intelligence, can aid in water treatment and management.

Development of adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system model for predict trihalomethane formation potential in distribution network simulation test

Trihalomethanes (THMs), which is one of the major classes of DBP known to be highly cytotoxic and genotoxic, were formed and modeled under controlled conditions by laboratory-scale distribution network simulation test. The formation potentials of THM depending on the parameters such as natural organic matter, bromide, chlorine, pH, and contact time were determined. Subsequently, the Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) model was developed using these parameters as inputs and THM formation potentials as output, and the correlation coefficient was 0.9817. In the range of the inputs, the ANFIS model representing the simulation test results were compared with THM formations of an actual distribution network system in dry and wet seasons. As a result, the predictions of the ANFIS model were little affected by the unidentified factors that were not used in model training but are known to affect THM formations in real waters and gave more consistent results than the EPA model.

Functional input and membership characteristics in the accuracy of machine learning approach for estimation of multiphase flow

In the current study, Artificial Intelligence (AI) approach was used for the learning of a physical system. We applied four inputs and one output in the learning process of AI. In the learning process, the inputs are space locations of a BCR (bubble column reactor), which are x, y, and z coordinate as well as the amount of gas fraction in BCR. The liquid velocity is also considered as output. A variety of functions were used in learning, such as gbellmf and gaussmf functions, to examine which functions can give the best learning. At the end of the study, all of the results were compared to CFD (computational fluid dynamics). A three-dimensional (3D) BCR was used in this research, and we studied simulation by CFD as well as AI. The data from CFD in a 3D BCR was studied in the AI domain. In AI, we tuned for various parameters to achieve the best intelligence in the system. For instance, different inputs, different membership functions, different numbers of membership functions were used in the learning process. Moreover, the meshless prediction was used, meaning that some data in the BCR have not participated in the learning, and they were predicted in the prediction process, which gives us a special capability to compare the results with the CFD outcomes. The findings showed us that AI can predict the CFD results, and a great agreement was achieved between CFD computing nodes and AI elements. This novel methodology can suggest a meshless and multifunctional AI model to simulate the turbulence flow in the BCR. For further evaluation, the ANFIS method is compared with ACOFIS and PSOFIS methods with regards to model’s accuracy. The results show that ANFIS method contains higher accuracy and prediction capability compared with ACOFIS and PSOFIS methods.

Influence of number of membership functions on prediction of membrane systems using adaptive network based fuzzy inference system (ANFIS)

In membrane separation technologies, membrane modules are used to separate chemical components. In membrane technology, understanding the behavior of fluids inside membrane module is challenging, and numerical methods are possible by using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). On the other hand, the optimization of membrane technology via CFD needs time and computational costs. Artificial Intelligence (AI) and CFD together can model a chemical process, including membrane technology and phase separation. This process can learn the process by learning the neural networks, and point by point learning of CFD mesh elements (computing nodes), and the fuzzy logic system can predict this process. In the current study, the adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) model and different parameters of ANFIS for learning a process based on membrane technology was used. The purpose behind using this model is to see how different tuning parameters of the ANFIS model can be used for increasing the exactness of the AI model and prediction of the membrane technology. These parameters were changed in this study, and the accuracy of the prediction was investigated. The results indicated that with low number of inputs, poor regression was obtained, less than 0.32 (R-value), but by increasing the number of inputs, the AI algorithm led to an increase in the prediction capability of the model. When the number of inputs increased to 4, the R-value was increased to 0.99, showing the high accuracy of model as well as its high capability in prediction of membrane process. The AI results were in good agreement with the CFD results. AI results were achieved in a limited time and with low computational costs. In terms of the categorization of CFD data-set, the AI framework plays a critical role in storing data in short memory, and the recovery mechanism can be very easy for users. Furthermore, the results were compared with Particle Swarm Optimization (PSOFIS), and Genetic Algorithm (GAFIS). The time for prediction and learning were compared to study the capability of the methods in prediction and their accuracy.

ANFIS grid partition framework with difference between two sigmoidal membership functions structure for validation of nanofluid flow

In this study, a square cavity is modeled using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) as well as artificial intelligence (AI) approach. In the square cavity, copper (Cu) nanoparticle is the nanofluid and the flow velocity characteristics in the x-direction and y-direction, and the fluid temperature inside the cavity at different times are considered as CFD outputs. CFD outputs have been assessed using one of the artificial intelligence algorithms, such as a combination of neural network and fuzzy logic (ANFIS). As in the ANFIS method, we have a non-dimension procedure in the learning step, and there is no issue in combining other characteristics of the flow and thermal distribution beside the x and y coordinates, we combine two coordinate parameters and one flow parameter. This ability of method can be considered as a meshless learning step that there is no instability of the numerical method or limitation of boundary conditions. The data were classified using the grid partition method and the MF (membership function) type was dsigmf (difference between two sigmoidal membership functions). By achieving the appropriate intelligence in the ANFIS method, output prediction was performed at the points of cavity which were not included in the learning process and were compared to the existing data (the results of the CFD method) and were validated by them. This new combination of CFD and the ANFIS method enables us to learn flow and temperature distribution throughout the domain thoroughly, and eventually predict the flow characteristics in short computational time. The results from AI in the ANFIS method were compared to the ant colony and fuzzy logic methods. The data from CFD results were inserted into the ant colony system for the training process, and we predicted the data in the fuzzy logic system. Then, we compare the data with the ANFIS method. The results indicate that the ANFIS method has a high potentiality compared to the ant colony method because the amount of R in the ANIFS system is higher than R in the ant colony method. In the ANFIS method, R is equal to 0.99, and in the ant colony method, R is equal to 0.91. This shows that the ant colony needs more time for both the prediction and training of the system. Also, comparing the pattern recognition in the two systems, we can obviously see that by using the ANFIS method, the predictions completely match the target points. But the other method cannot match the flow pattern and velocity distribution with the CFD method.

Modification of polyethersulfone membrane using MWCNT-NH2 nanoparticles and its application in the separation of azeotropic solutions by means of pervaporation

In this study, functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT-NH₂) were synthesized as an additive for the preparation of mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) and then were investigated by FTIR and FE-SEM techniques. Polyether sulfone (PES) polymeric membrane modified with functionalized MWCNT-NH₂ carbon nanotubes was prepared by phase inversion method. The effect of MWCNT-NH₂ on the morphology and property of the PES membrane was evaluated using scanning electron microscopy. The flux, enrichment factor and swelling properties of modified membranes were also used to investigate the membranes performance. The results showed that the flux and enrichment factor in modified PES membrane containing 5 wt.% of functionalized MWCNT-NH₂ carbon nanotubes were obtained 1.2 L.m^-2h^-1 and 3.3, respectively. The influence of methanol concentration on the flux and enrichment factor was investigated. The results corroborated that the flux didn’t change significantly, while the enrichment factor was decreased.

Developing an ANFIS-PSO Model to Predict Mercury Emissions in Combustion Flue Gases

Accurate prediction of mercury content emitted from fossil-fueled power stations is of the utmost importance for environmental pollution assessment and hazard mitigation. In this paper, mercury content in the output gas of power stations’ boilers was predicted using an adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) method integrated with particle swarm optimization (PSO). The input parameters of the model included coal characteristics and the operational parameters of the boilers. The dataset was collected from 82 sample points in power plants and employed to educate and examine the proposed model. To evaluate the performance of the proposed hybrid model of the ANFIS-PSO, the statistical meter of MARE% was implemented, which resulted in 0.003266 and 0.013272 for training and testing, respectively. Furthermore, relative errors between the acquired data and predicted values were between −0.25% and 0.1%, which confirm the accuracy of the model to deal non-linearity and represent the dependency of flue gas mercury content into the specifications of coal and the boiler type.

Investigation on the Potential to Integrate Different Artificial Intelligence Models with Metaheuristic Algorithms for Improving River Suspended Sediment Predictions

Suspended sediment load (SLL) prediction is a significant field in hydrology and hydraulic sciences, as sedimentation processes change the soil quality. Although the adaptive neuro fuzzy system (ANFIS) and multilayer feed-forward neural network (MFNN) have been widely used to simulate hydrological variables, improving the accuracy of the above models is an important issue for hydrologists. In this article, the ANFIS and MFNN models were improved by the bat algorithm (BA) and weed algorithm (WA). Thus, the current paper introduces improved ANFIS and MFNN models: ANFIS–BA, ANFIS–WA, MFNN–BA, and MFNN–WA. The models were validated by applying river discharge, rainfall, and monthly suspended sediment load (SSL) for the Atrek basin in Iran. In addition, seven input groups were used to predict monthly SSL. The best models were identified through root-mean-square error (RMSE), Nash–Sutcliff efficiency (NSE), standard deviation ratio (RSR), percent bias (PBIAS) indices, and uncertainty analysis. For the ANFIS–BA model, RMSE and RSR varied from 1.5 to 2.5 ton/d and from 5% to 25%, respectively. In addition, a variation range of NSE was between very good and good performance (0. 75 to 0.85 and 0.85 to 1). The uncertainty analysis showed that the ANFIS–BA had more reliable performance compared to other models. Thus, the ANFIS–BA model has high potential for predicting SSL.

Prediction of Compression Index of Fine-Grained Soils Using a Gene Expression Programming Model

In construction projects, estimation of the settlement of fine-grained soils is of critical importance, and yet is a challenging task. The coefficient of consolidation for the compression index (Cc) is a key parameter in modeling the settlement of fine-grained soil layers. However, the estimation of this parameter is costly, time-consuming, and requires skilled technicians. To overcome these drawbacks, we aimed to predict Cc through other soil parameters, i.e., the liquid limit (LL), plastic limit (PL), and initial void ratio (e0). Using these parameters is more convenient and requires substantially less time and cost compared to the conventional tests to estimate Cc. This study presents a novel prediction model for the Cc of fine-grained soils using gene expression programming (GEP). A database consisting of 108 different data points was used to develop the model. A closed-form equation solution was derived to estimate Cc based on LL, PL, and e0. The performance of the developed GEP-based model was evaluated through the coefficient of determination (R2), the root mean squared error (RMSE), and the mean average error (MAE). The proposed model performed better in terms of R2, RMSE, and MAE compared to the other models.

Review of Soft Computing Models in Design and Control of Rotating Electrical Machines

Rotating electrical machines are electromechanical energy converters with a fundamental impact on the production and conversion of energy. Novelty and advancement in the control and high-performance design of these machines are of interest in energy management. Soft computing methods are known as the essential tools that significantly improve the performance of rotating electrical machines in both aspects of control and design. From this perspective, a wide range of energy conversion systems such as generators, high-performance electric engines, and electric vehicles, are highly reliant on the advancement of soft computing techniques used in rotating electrical machines. This article presents the-state-of-the-art of soft computing techniques and their applications, which have greatly influenced the progression of this significant realm of energy. Through a novel taxonomy of systems and applications, the most critical advancements in the field are reviewed for providing an insight into the future of control and design of rotating electrical machines.
