Designing phononic crystal based tunable four-channel acoustic demultiplexer

Enhanced Sensitivity of Binary/Ternary Locally Resonant Porous Phononic Crystal Sensors for Sulfuric Acid Detection: A New Class of Fluidic-Based Biosensors

This research presented a comprehensive study of a one-dimensional (1D) porous silicon phononic crystal design as a novel fluidic sensor. The proposed sensor is designed to detect sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄) within a narrow concentration range of 0-15%. Sulfuric acid is a mineral acid extensively utilized in various physical, chemical, and industrial applications. Undoubtedly, its concentration, particularly at lower levels, plays a pivotal role in these applications. Hence, there is an urgent demand for a highly accurate and sensitive tool to monitor even the slightest changes in its concentration, which is crucial for researchers. Herein, we presented a novel study on the optimization of the phononic crystal (PnC) sensor. The optimization process involves a comparative strategy between binary and ternary PnCs, utilizing a multilayer stack comprising 1D porous silicon (PSi) layers. Additionally, a second comparison is conducted between conventional Bragg and local resonant PnCs to demonstrate the design with the highest sensitivity. Moreover, we determine the optimum values for the materials' thickness and number of periods. The results revealed that the ternary local resonant PnC design with the configuration of {silicone rubber/[PSi1/PSi2/PSi3]^N/silicone rubber} is the optimal sensor design. The sensor provided a super sensitivity of 2.30 × 10⁷ Hz for a concentration change of just 2%. This exceptional sensitivity is attributed to the presence of local resonant modes within the band gap of PnCs. The temperature effects on the local resonant modes and sensor performance have also been considered. Furthermore, additional sensor performance parameters such as quality factor, figure of merit, detection limit, and damping rate have been calculated to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed liquid sensor. The transfer matrix method was utilized to compute the transmission spectra of the PnC, and Hashin's expression was employed to manipulate the porous silicon media filled with sulfuric acid at various concentrations. Lastly, the proposed sensor can serve as an efficient tool for detecting acidic rain, contaminating freshwater, and assessing food and liquid quality, as well as monitoring other pharmaceutical products.

Monochannel Demultiplexer Phononic Crystal Slab Based on Hollow Pillars

A mono-channel waveguide with alternate hollow pillars of different radius to passively select and reject particular frequencies for filtering applications are numerically simulated based on the Finite Element Method (FEM). The waves are guided while the frequencies can be filtered according to pillar inner radius as its waveguiding mechanism. The computations of dispersion relation, transmission coefficient and stress displacement profile of the waveguides were carried out to understand the propagation behaviour of elastic waves on the waveguide structure. The proposed model shows a complete bandgap around 700 kHz, while its respective blocking phenomenon is demonstrated using square-ring shapes. The introduction of defect lines in linear and L-Shaped form enables a tailorable frequency shift within the bandgap region with optimized inner radius of hollow pillar. The proposed model eliminates the need for a multi-channel filtering system with conventional several separated lines thus reduces the dimension of filtering device.

Acoustic Add-Drop filter involving a ring resonator based on a One-Dimensional surface phononic crystal

By employing two parallel one-dimensional surface phononic crystals for spoof surface acoustic waves and a circular ring resonator, an acoustic add-drop filter is numerically designed and its operation in the air environment is both numerically and experimentally investigated. Finite Element Method is used for band structure calculations and frequency domain simulations of filter operation. For frequencies around 40 kHz, a surface band is observed when a one-dimensional array of cylindrical cavities with a period of 2.7 mm, whose radius is 1.1 mm are embedded in the solid surface by 30% of the radius from their center. When a surface phononic crystal is close to a circular ring resonator containing 100 cavities in total with a radius of 42.9 mm, at a distance of 1.5 periods, frequency-domain Finite-Element simulations at 41.528 kHz reveal that drop port output maximum is observed, whereas through and add outputs are minimum. The corresponding drop port transmission peak has a width and quality factor of 25 Hz and 1661, respectively. In addition, the contrast ratio between the drop and through port outputs at the peak frequency is calculated as 0.77. Experimentally obtained port output data are in agreement with numerical results. The proposed acoustic add-drop filter can be used in areas such as ultrasonic sensors, acoustic signal processing and acoustic logic.

Double defects-induced elastic wave coupling and energy localization in a phononic crystal

This study aims to investigate elastic wave localization that leverages defect band splitting in a phononic crystal with double defects through in-depth analysis of comparison of numerical and experimental results. When more than one defect is created inside a phononic crystal, these defects can interact with each other, resulting in a distinctive physical phenomenon from a single defect case: defect band splitting. For a phononic crystal consisting of circular-hole type unit cells in a thin aluminum plate, under A0 (the lowest antisymmetric) Lamb waves, both numerical simulations and experiments successfully confirm the defect band splitting phenomenon via frequency response functions for the out-of-plane displacement calculated/measured at the double defects within a finite distance. Furthermore, experimental visualization of in-phase and out-of-phase defect mode shapes at each frequency of the split defect bands is achieved and found to be in excellent agreement with the simulated results. Different inter-distance combinations of the double defects reveal that the degree of the defect band splitting decreases with  the increasing distance due to weaker coupling between the defects. This work may shed light on engineering applications of a multiple-defect-introduced phononic crystal, including broadband energy harvesting, frequency detectors, and elastic wireless power transfer.

Y-Shaped Demultiplexer Photonic Circuits Based on Detuned Stubs: Application to Radiofrequency Domain

We present a theoretical and experimental study of photonic demultiplexers based on detuned stubs. The demultiplexers consist of Y-shaped structures with one input line and two output lines. Two different types of structures are proposed to achieve a selective transfer of a single mode in one output line without disturbing the second one. (i) In the first platform each output contains two different stubs attached at two different sites (U-shaped resonators). We derive in closed form the geometrical parameters of the stubs to achieve a selected frequency in each line while keeping the other line unaffected. The frequency selection can be made on the basis of two different mechanisms, namely a Fano or an electromagnetic induced transparency (EIT) resonance. Consequently, different demultiplexing schemes can be designed by a combination of the two mechanisms, such as Fano-Fano, Fano-EIT or EIT-EIT. In particular, the width of the Fano or EIT resonances can become zero for an appropriate choice of the stubs’ lengths, giving rise to trapped modes also called bound in continuum states (BICs) with infinite quality factors. We also show that the crosstalk between the two outputs can reach minimum values around −45 dB. (ii) In the second platform, each output line contains a photonic comb with a defect stub. The latter is appropriately designed to filter one or a few frequencies in the bandgap of the photonic comb. The analytical calculations are performed with the help of the Green’s function method which enables us to derive the transmission and reflection coefficients as well as the density of states (DOS). These results are confirmed by experimental measurements using coaxial cables in the radio frequency domain.
