Novel fatty acid anion-based ionic liquids: Contact angle, surface tension, polarity fraction and spreading parameter

Dynamic Wetting of Ionic Liquid Drops on Hydrophobic Microstructures

Ionic liquids (ILs)─salts in a liquid state─play a crucial role in various applications, such as green solvents for chemical synthesis and catalysis, lubricants, especially for micro- and nanoelectromechanical systems, and electrolytes in solar cells. These applications critically rely on unique or tunable bulk properties of ionic liquids, such as viscosity, density, and surface tension. Furthermore, their interactions with different solid surfaces of various roughness and structures may uphold other promising applications, such as combustion, cooling, and coating. However, only a few systematic studies of IL wetting and interactions with solid surfaces exist. Here, we experimentally and theoretically investigate the dynamic wetting and contact angles (CA) of water and three kinds of ionic liquid droplets on hydrophobic microstructures of surface roughness (r = 2.61) and packing fraction (ϕ = 0.47) formed by micropillars arranged in a periodic pattern. The results show that, except for water, higher-viscosity ionic liquids have greater advancing and receding contact angles with increasing contact line velocity. Water drops initially form a gas-trapping, CB wetting state, whereas all three ionic liquid drops are in a Wenzel wetting state, where liquids penetrate and completely wet the microstructures. We find that an existing model comparing the global surface energies between a CB and a Wenzel state agrees well with the observed wetting states. In addition, a molecular dynamic model well predicts the experimental data and is used to explain the observed dynamic wetting for the ILs and superhydrophobic substrate. Our results further show that energy dissipation occurs more significantly in the three-phase contact line region than in the liquid bulk.

All-Polymer Piezo-Composites for Scalable Energy Harvesting and Sensing Devices

Silicone elastomer composites with piezoelectric properties, conferred by incorporated polyimide copolymers, with pressure sensors similar to human skin and kinetic energy harvester capabilities, were developed as thin film (<100 micron thick) layered architecture. They are based on polymer materials which can be produced in industrial amounts and are scalable for large areas (m2). The piezoelectric properties of the tested materials were determined using a dynamic mode of piezoelectric force microscopy. These composite materials bring together polydimethylsiloxane polymers with customized poly(siloxane-imide) copolymers (2−20 wt% relative to siloxanes), with siloxane segments inserted into the structure to ensure the compatibility of the components. The morphology of the materials as free-standing films was studied by SEM and AFM, revealing separated phases for higher polyimide concentration (10, 20 wt%). The composites show dielectric behavior with a low loss (<10−1) and a relative permittivity superior (3−4) to pure siloxane within a 0.1−106 Hz range. The composite in the form of a thin film can generate up to 750 mV under contact with a 30 g steel ball dropped from 10 cm high. This capability to convert a pressure signal into a direct current for the tested device has potential for applications in self-powered sensors and kinetic energy-harvesting applications. Furthermore, the materials preserve the known electromechanical properties of pure polysiloxane, with lateral strain actuation values of up to 6.2% at 28.9 V/μm.

Methyltrioctylammonium Octadecanoate as Lubricant Additive to Different Base Oils

This study investigates the use of an ionic liquid obtained from fatty acids (FAIL) as an additive at 2 wt.% in two different base oils: a mineral oil (M1) and a polyol ester (E1). Physicochemical characterization of the base oil–FAIL blends confirmed the miscibility of the FAIL in the base oils. The addition of the FAIL hardly changed the density of the base oils and the viscosity slightly increased at lower temperatures. The tribological performance of the base oils and their blends with the FAIL was determined using three different tests: Stribeck curve determination and tribofilm formation tests, both under sliding/rolling motion, and reciprocating wear tests. The M1 + FAIL blend showed the lowest friction values under the mixed lubrication regime due to its higher viscosity, while the E1 + FAIL showed the lowest friction values under the elastohydrodynamic lubrication regime, which may well have been due to its higher polarity. Only the E1 + FAIL blend outperformed the antiwear behavior of the base oil, probably because it has better chemical affinity (higher polarity) for the metallic surface. SEM images showed that the predominant wear mechanism was adhesive-type with plastic deformation and XPS studies proved that the presence of increasing amounts of organic oxygen on the wear scar caused better antiwear performance when the E1 + FAIL blend was used.

Permeation by Electrowetting Actuation: Revealing the Prospect of a Micro-valve Based on Ionic Liquid

The electrowetting behavior of ionic liquid significantly promotes microfluidic technology due to the advantage of manipulation of ionic liquid without additional mechanical parts. Recently, a novel micro-valve that shows good prospects was proposed by MacArthur et al. based on the permeation of ionic liquid under electric field. Inspired by their work, the permeation process of ionic liquid (EMIM-Im) droplets actuated by electrowetting was investigated in this work using molecular dynamics simulation. The wettability of substrate, electric field strength and electric field polarity were varied to investigate their influences. On the substrate side, results showed that the hydrophilic substrates tend to stretch and adsorb the droplet and hence hinder the permeation process, whereas the hydrophobic substrates facilitate permeation due to their low attraction for liquid. Particularly, super hydrophilic substrates should be avoided in practice, because their strong adsorption effects will override the electric field effects and disable the permeation process. On the electric field side, results showed that increased electric field strength enhances the permeation, but varying electric field polarity will result in an asymmetric permeation behavior, which was found to be the result of the different evaporation rate of the ion species that ultimately caused a non-charge-neutral droplet. Our investigation then uncovered the two critical roles of the electric field: elongating the droplet and providing the driving force for the permeation.

Composite Materials Based on Iron Oxide Nanoparticles and Polyurethane for Improving the Quality of MRI

Polyether urethane (PU)-based magnetic composite materials, containing different types and concentrations of iron oxide nanostructures (Fe₂O₃ and Fe₃O₄), were prepared and investigated as a novel composite platform that could be explored in different applications, especially for the improvement of the image quality of MRI investigations. Firstly, the PU structure was synthetized by means of a polyaddition reaction and then hematite (Fe₂O₃) and magnetite (Fe₃O₄) nanoparticles were added to the PU matrices to prepare magnetic nanocomposites. The type and amount of iron oxide nanoparticles influenced its structural, morphological, mechanical, dielectric, and magnetic properties. Thus, the morphology and wettability of the PU nanocomposites surfaces presented different behaviours depending on the amount of the iron oxide nanoparticles embedded in the matrices. Mechanical, dielectric, and magnetic properties were enhanced in the composites’ samples when compared with pristine PU matrix. In addition, the investigation of in vitro cytocompatibility of prepared PU nanocomposites showed that these samples are good candidates for biomedical applications, with cell viability levels in the range of 80–90%. Considering all the investigations, we can conclude that the addition of magnetic particles introduced additional properties to the composite, which could significantly expand the functionality of the materials developed in this work.

Concentration-induced wettability alteration of nanoscale NaCl solution droplets on the CSH surface

Due to the hydrophilic nature of concrete, moisture and corrosive ions adsorbed on its surface pose a severe challenge to the durability of concrete structures; therefore, investigating the wettability of a concrete surface is an indispensable prerequisite for designing durable and sustainable concrete. This paper utilizes molecular dynamics to simulate the concentration-induced wettability alteration of nanoscale NaCl droplets on a CSH surface, and verifies the feasibility and rationality of predicting the contact angle of a droplet on the CSH surface based on the surface tension. Results suggest that the wetting ability of droplets on the CSH surface is weakened with the increase of the NaCl mass fraction. Microscopic analysis reveals that water molecules clustered around Na⁺ and Cl^- ions to form an ion hydration shell (Na⁺-Ow and Cl^--Hw pairs); the binding energy barrier of these ion pairs is much larger than the dissociation energy barrier, which enhances the associative ability of the NaCl droplets. The particles on the CSH surface attract Na⁺ and Cl^- ions by forming Oh(Os)-Na⁺ and Ca(Ho)-Cl^- connections with droplets, which further weakens the spreading ability of water molecules on the CSH surface.

Friction, Wear and Corrosion Behavior of Environmentally-Friendly Fatty Acid Ionic Liquids

This research deals with the tribological behavior and corrosion performance of three novel fatty acid anion-based ionic liquids (FAILs): methyltrioctylammonium hexanoate ([N8,8,8,1][C6:0]), methyltrioctylammonium octadecanoate ([N8,8,8,1][C18:0]) and methyltrioctylammonium octadec-9-enoate ([N8,8,8,1][C18:1]), employed for the first time as neat lubricant with five different material pairs: steel–steel, steel–aluminum alloy, steel–bronze, steel–cast iron and steel–tungsten carbide. These novel substances were previously obtained from fatty acids via metathesis reactions, identified structurally via NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance) and FTIR (Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy) techniques, and then characterized from a physicochemical (density, water solubility, viscosity, viscosity index and refractive index) and environmental (bacterial toxicity and biodegradability) points of view. The corrosion behavior of the three FAILs was studied by exposure at room temperature, while friction and wear tests were performed with a reciprocating ball-on-disc configuration. The main results and conclusions obtained were: (1) Corrosion in the presence of the three FAILs is observed only on the bronze surface; (2) All FAILs presented similar tribological behavior as lubricants for each tested material pair; (3) XPS (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy) analysis indicated that the surface behavior of the three FAILs in each material pair was similar, with low chemical interaction with the surfaces.

Fatty Acid-Derived Ionic Liquid Lubricant. Protic Ionic Liquid Crystals as Protic Ionic Liquid Additives

Fatty acids are natural products which have been studied as green lubricants. Ionic liquids are considered efficient friction reducing and wear preventing lubricants and lubricant additives. Fatty acid-derived ionic liquids have shown potential as neat lubricant and additives. Protic ionic liquid crystals (PILCs) are protic ionic liquids (PILs) where cations and anions form ordered mesophases that show liquid crystalline behavior. The adsorption of carboxylate units on sliding surfaces can enhance the lubricant performance. Ionic liquid crystal lubricants with longer alkyl chains can separate sliding surfaces more efficiently. However, they are usually solid at room temperature and, when used as additives in water, transitions to high friction coefficients and wear rates, with tribocorrosion processes occur when water evaporation takes place at the interface. In order to avoid these inconveniences, in the present work, a protic ammonium palmitate (DPA) ionic liquid crystal has been added in 1 wt.% proportion to a short chain citrate ionic liquid (DCi) with the same protic ammonium cation. A spin coated layer of (DCi + DPA) was deposited on AISI316L steel surface before the sliding test against sapphire ball. Synergy between DCi PIL and DPA PILC additive reduces friction coefficient and wear rate, without tribocorrosion processes, as shown by scanning electron microscopy (SEM)/energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis (EDX) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results.
