Excited state intramolecular proton transfer process in benzazole fluorophores tailored by polymeric matrix: A combined theoretical and experimental study

Revealing the ESIPT process in benzoxazole fluorophores within polymeric matrices through theory and experiment

The impact of the polymeric matrix on the photophysical characteristics of monomeric dyes responsive to excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) was investigated through UV-Vis absorption as well as steady-state and time-resolved emission spectroscopies. For this purpose, two benzoxazole monomers (M1 and M2) with acryloyl groups at different positions in their molecular structures were employed to facilitate covalent bonding within a styrene chain. Our findings reveal significant variations in their excited-state properties due to the proximity of the acryloyl groups, which affects the energy barrier of the ESIPT reaction, the emission wavelength, and the balance between the normal and tautomeric forms. The experimental results were corroborated through theoretical investigations at the DFT/TDDFT level, specifically using the B3LYP-D3/def2-TZVP methodology. Three notable observations emerged: donor/acceptor groups at the meta/para positions induced electron distribution changes, causing red-shifted emission for M2; in the polymer film, particularly in PM1, intramolecular hydrogen bond deactivation favored N* emission over T* emission; and the zwitterionic character of the T* species. This study underscores the advantages of functionalization in polymers, which can lead to colorless films and prevalent N* or T* emission, and contributes valuable insights into molecular design strategies for tailoring the photophysical properties of polymeric materials.

Uncovering the dependence of ESIPT behaviors and fluorescence properties of two new benzothiazole-based fluorophores on solvent polarity: A TD-DFT study

We have studied the spectral features and excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) processes of 2-(2',4'-dihydroxyphenyl)benzothiazole (OHBT) and 2-(2'-hydroxy-5'-chlorophenyl)benzothiazole (CHBT) using density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT). To consider the impact of solvent polarity and intermolecular hydrogen bond (H-bond) on the ESIPT behavior and photophysical properties, four solvents including toluene (TL), tetrahydrofuran (THF), methanol (MeOH) and dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) were used. The simulated absorption and fluorescence wavelengths of OHBT and CHBT are well consistent with the experimental values. According to the results of structures, electron density and infrared (IR) vibrational frequencies, we found that the intramolecular H-bonds in OHBT/CHBT and OHBT-MeOH/CHBT-MeOH are strengthened in the first singlet excited state (S₁), which will be benefical to the ESIPT process. The potential energy curves (PECs) verified that the ESIPT processes in OHBT/CHBT and OHBT-MeOH/CHBT-MeOH can take place much easier because of their lower energy barrier. The influences of solvent polarity on ESIPT behaviors and photophysical properties of OHBT and CHBT are summarized below. As the solvent polarity becomes stronger from TL to DMSO, the energy gaps enlarges a little, the maximum absorption and fluorescence peaks at normal form red-shift slightly, and the strengths of H-bond in S₁ state become weaker, which makes the ESIPT process occur much harder. The formation of intermolecular H-bond between OHBT/CHBT and MeOH is conducive to promote the ESIPT process of OHBT/CHBT.

Substituent derivatives of benzothiazole-based fluorescence probes for hydrazine with conspicuous luminescence properties: A theoretical study

In the present work, four probe molecules for detecting hydrazine have been designed based on the 2-(4-Acetoxy-3-benzothiazole-2-yl-phenyl)-4-methyl-thiazole- 5-carboxylic acid ethyl ester (HP1) to investigate the influence of the amino and cyano groups on the excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) behavior and photophysical properties. The changes in hydrogen bond strength indicate that the intramolecular hydrogen bond of all probe products is enhanced upon photoexcitation. Frontier molecular orbitals (FMOs) and natural bond orbital (NBO) reveal the driving force of ESIPT. In addition, the potential energy curves and transition state theory explain the reason for the single fluorescence phenomenon in the experiment. The simulated absorption and fluorescence spectra of HP1 and its product (HPP1) are completely consistent with the experimental results, which also verify the viewpoint. Meanwhile the cyano derivative HPP4 exhibits a larger Stokes-shift (201 nm) than that of HPP1 (145 nm) and has the same low energy barrier as HPP1. These excellent properties allow HPP4 to be a fluorescent probe with superior performance than the original molecule. In conclusion, this work can provide a theoretical basis for the design and synthesis of more sensitive fluorescent probes for the detection of hydrazine.

Dual Solution-/Solid-State Emissive Excited-State Intramolecular Proton Transfer (ESIPT) Dyes: A Combined Experimental and Theoretical Approach

Excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) dyes typically show strong solid-state emission, but faint fluorescence intensity is observed in the solution state owing to detrimental molecular motions. This article investigates the influence of direct (hetero)arylation on the optical properties of 2-(2'-hydroxyphenyl)benzoxazole ESIPT emitters. The synthesis of two series of ESIPT emitters bearing substituted neutral or charged aryl, thiophene, or pyridine rings is reported herein along with full photophysical studies in solution and solid states, demonstrating the dual solution-/solid-state emission behavior. Depending on the nature of substitution, several excited-state dynamics are observed: quantitative or partially frustrated ESIPT process or deprotonation of the excited species. Protonation studies revealed that pyridine substitution triggered a strong increase of quantum yield in the solution state for the protonated species owing to favorable quinoidal stabilization. These attractive features led to the development of a second series of dyes with alkyl or aryl pyridinium moieties showing strong tunable solution/solid fluorescence intensity. For each series, ab initio calculations helped rationalize and ascertain their behavior in the excited state and the nature of the emission observed by the experimental results.

Benzothiazole-pyridone and benzothiazole-pyrazole clubbed emissive azo dyes and dyeing application on polyester fabric: UPF, biological, photophysical and fastness properties with correlative computational assessments

Positional isomers of benzothiazole-pyridone and benzothiazole-pyrazole containing disperse azo dyes are reported. These heterocyclic azo dyes are decorated with 'separate ESIPT core' and show emission in seven solvents of different polarity. After application on polyester fabric, "very good to excellent" light and washing fastness properties were observed. Thermal stability of 'dyed fabric' was analysed by sublimation fastness test- and found 'very good to excellent' ratings at 210 °C. Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) analysis of four 'dyed fabric' indicates the blocking 96-97% of UV radiation. Dyes were found effective on gram positive and negative bacteria by agar diffusion method and all the 'dyed fabrics' also showed more than 92% or 94% reduction of S. aureus or K. pneumoniae respectively by 'AATCC 100' method. Structures of the dyes were optimized using Density Functional Theory (DFT) to deduce stable tautomeric form. Calculated HOMO-LUMO gap is then compared with antibacterial activities. Electrophilicity index and lightfastness property were also compared and found to have very good correlation.

Experimental and Theoretical Investigation of Excited-State Intramolecular Proton Transfer Processes of Benzothiazole Derivatives in Amino-polydimethylsiloxanes before and after Cross-Linking by CO2

The changes in the ability of three fluorescent derivatives of 2-(2'-hydroxyphenyl)benzothiazole to undergo excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) processes have been correlated with the rheological properties of four amino-polydimethylsiloxanes with different molar masses and containing different amounts of monomer units with amino pendant groups, in the presence and absence of a cross-linking molecule, CO₂. The changes lead to a variety of species (keto, enol, and enolate forms) in both the ground and excited states. Calculations using the density-functional theory/time-dependent density-functional theory method at the CAM-B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) level helped to identify how ESIPT is involved in the formation of the intermediates. The results demonstrate that proton transfer in 2-(2'-hydroxyphenyl)benzothiazoles is a powerful tool to identify local changes in the viscosity and micropolarity of the environment that are attributed to the structural differences of the amino-polydimethylsiloxanes and their cross-linking.
