Effects of silica nanoparticle on the solution properties of hydrophobically associating polymer based on acrylamide and β-cyclodextrin

Facile synthesis of 2-hydroxy-β-cyclodextrin/polyacrylamide/carbazole hydrogel and its application for the treatment of infected wounds in a murine model

This work aimed to synthesize hydrogels by combining carbazole (Carb) with 2-hydroxy, β-cyclodextrin (HPβCD)/polyacrylamide (PAA) hybrid complexes. The hydrogels were then evaluated for their potential use in treating infected wounds. The physicochemical structures of the preparations were evaluated using several characterization methods including FTIR, FESEM, EDX, XRD, pH sensitivity, and TGA. Moreover, In vitro release, toxicity, antibacterial activity and in vivo infected wound healing activity were evaluated. Physicochemical testing verified the effective synthesis of the preparations and the timely release of Carb. The P(AA-co-AM)/HPβCD material exhibited an open structure characterized by macroscopic voids, whereas the hydrogels displayed surfaces that were not uniform. The FTIR analysis revealed the creation of a novel polymeric hydrogel composed of HPβCD as the main polymer structure. The hydrogels exhibited good reversible swelling and recoverable deformation, with an optimal swelling ratio of 30.12 achieved at pH 7.4. The antibacterial and safety of the formulations were validated by in vitro studies. β.Dex/PAA/Carb hydrogels have been shown to effectively expedite the healing of infected wounds by promoting the production of CD31, FGF-2, and COL1A, while reducing the levels of ROS, CD68, COX-2, and NF-κB. Overall, the combination of Carb, β.Dex, and PAA molecules had a synergistic impact on the healing process of infected wounds.

Molecular Dynamics Simulations of Supramolecular Polymers within Nanoconfinements for Enhanced Oil Recovery

Supramolecular polymers offer promising potential for enhanced oil recovery (EOR) advancing techniques. Current instrumental analyses face limitations in capturing instantaneous intracomplex motions due to temporal and spatial constraints. The molecular mechanism of supramolecular polymer transport behavior within nanoconfinement is not yet fully understood. Therefore, the self-assembly mechanism of β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) and adamantane (ADA)-modified supramolecular polymers (p-AA-β-CD-ADA) was delved into in this work. Further exploration focuses on the translocation dynamics of p-AA-β-CD-ADA within nanoconfinement under external driving forces. Results suggest that β-CD and ADA in p-AA-β-CD-ADA were assembled into nodes in the form of a host and a guest, combining with a "node-rebar-cement" interaction model encapsulating the formation mechanism of these supramolecular polymers. The heightened density of the hydrate layers at the nanoscale pore throats acts as a constraining factor, resulting in restricted mobility and altered dynamics of the supramolecular polymers. During passage through nanopore throats, host-guest molecules within the supramolecular polymer experience noncovalent dissociation. Notably, these supramolecular polymers exhibit remarkable self-healing capabilities, reinstating their assembly state upon traversing pore throats. This work provides a molecular-level comprehension of the potential utility of supramolecular polymers in EOR processes, offering valuable information for the molecular design of polymers employed for EOR in low-permeability reservoirs.

Investigation of Polymer Gel Reinforced by Oxygen Scavengers and Nano-SiO2 for Flue Gas Flooding Reservoir

Polymer gel plugging is an effective technique for gas mobility control in flue gas flooding reservoirs. However, the performance of polymer gels is extremely susceptible to the injected flue gas. A reinforced chromium acetate/partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (HPAM) gel, using thiourea as the oxygen scavenger and nano-SiO₂ as the stabilizer, was formulated. The related properties were evaluated systematically, including gelation time, gel strength, and long-term stability. The results indicated that the degradation of polymers was effectively suppressed by oxygen scavengers and nano-SiO₂. The gel strength would be increased by 40% and the gel kept desirable stability after aging for 180 days at elevated flue gas pressures. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) analysis and Cryo-scanning electron microscopy (Cryo-SEM) revealed that nano-SiO₂ was adsorbed on polymer chains by hydrogen bonding, which improved the homogeneity of gel structure and thus enhanced the gel strength. Besides, the compression resistance of gels was studied by creep and creep recovery tests. The failure stress of gel with the addition of thiourea and nanoparticles could reach up to 35 Pa. The gel retained a robust structure despite extensive deformation. Moreover, the flow experiment indicated that the plugging rate of reinforced gel still maintained up to 93% after flue gas flooding. It is concluded that the reinforced gel is applicable for flue gas flooding reservoirs.

Toward a Greener World-Cyclodextrin Derivatization by Mechanochemistry

Cyclodextrin (CD) derivatives are a challenge, mainly due to solubility problems. In many cases, the synthesis of CD derivatives requires high-boiling solvents, whereas the product isolation from the aqueous methods often requires energy-intensive processes. Complex formation faces similar challenges in that it involves interacting materials with conflicting properties. However, many authors also refer to the formation of non-covalent bonds, such as the formation of inclusion complexes or metal–organic networks, as reactions or synthesis, which makes it difficult to classify the technical papers. In many cases, the solubility of both the starting material and the product in the same solvent differs significantly. The sweetest point of mechanochemistry is the reduced demand or complete elimination of solvents from the synthesis. The lack of solvents can make syntheses more economical and greener. The limited molecular movements in solid-state allow the preparation of CD derivatives, which are difficult to produce under solvent reaction conditions. A mechanochemical reaction generally has a higher reagent utilization rate. When the reaction yields a good guest co-product, solvent-free conditions can be slower than in solution conditions. Regioselective syntheses of per-6-amino and alkylthio-CD derivatives or insoluble cyclodextrin polymers and nanosponges are good examples of what a greener technology can offer through solvent-free reaction conditions. In the case of thiolated CD derivatives, the absence of solvents results in significant suppression of the thiol group oxidation, too. The insoluble polymer synthesis is also more efficient when using the same molar ratio of the reagents as the solution reaction. Solid reactants not only reduce the chance of hydrolysis of multifunctional reactants or side reactions, but the spatial proximity of macrocycles also reduces the length of the spacing formed by the crosslinker. The structure of insoluble polymers of the mechanochemical reactions generally is more compact, with fewer and shorter hydrophilic arms than the products of the solution reactions.

Preparation and properties of amphiphilic hydrophobically associative polymer/ montmorillonite nanocomposites

In this research, a novel amphiphilic hydrophobically associative polymer nanocomposite (ADOS/OMMT) was prepared using acrylamide (AM), sodium 4-vinylbenzenesulfonate (SSS), N, N'-dimethyl octadeyl allyl ammonium bromide (DOAAB) and organo-modified montmorillonite (OMMT) through in situ polymerization. Both X-ray diffraction patterns and transmission electron microscopy images verified the dispersion morphology of OMMT in the copolymer matrix. Then, the effect of the introduction of OMMT layers on the copolymer properties was studied by comparing with pure copolymer AM/SSS/DOAAB (ADOS). The thermal degradation results demonstrated that the thermal stability of the ADOS/OMMT were better than pure copolymer ADOS. During the solution properties tests, ADOS/OMMT nanocomposite was superior to ADOS in viscosifying ability, temperature resistance, salt tolerance, shear resistance and viscoelasticity, which was because OMMT contributed to enhance the hydrophobic association structure formed between polymer molecules. Additionally, the ADOS/OMMT nanocomposite exhibited more excellent interfacial activity and crude oil emulsifiability in comparison to pure copolymer ADOS. These performances indicated ADOS/OMMT nanocomposite had good application prospects in tertiary recovery.
