Ionic liquids (ILs) are a class of liquid salts with characteristics such as a low melting point, an ionic nature, non-volatility, and tunable properties. Because of their adaptability, they have a significant influence in the field of fluorescence. This paper reviews the primary literature on the use of ILs in fluorescence sensing technologies. The kind of target material is utilized to classify the fluorescence sensors made with the use of ILs. They include using ILs as probes for metals, nitro explosives, small organic compounds, anions, and gases. The efficacy of an IL-based fluorescence sensor depends on the precise design to guarantee specificity, sensitivity, and a consistent reaction to the desired analyte. The precise method can differ depending on the chemical properties of the IL, the choice of fluorophore, and the interactions with the analyte. Overall, the viability of the aforementioned materials for chemical analysis is evaluated, and prospective possibilities for further development are identified.

A novel ZIF-8@IL-MXene/poly (N-isopropylacrylamide) nanocomposite hydrogel toward multifunctional adsorption

Phenols, dyes, and metal ions present in industrial wastewater can adversely affect the environment and leach biological carcinogens. Given that the current research focuses only on the removal of one or two of those categories. Herein, this work reports a novel ZIF-8@IL-MXene/Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (NIPAM) nanocomposite hydrogel that can efficiently and conveniently absorb and separate multiple pollutants from industrial wastewater. Ionic liquid (IL) was grafted onto MXene surfaces using a one-step method, and then incorporated into NIPAM monomer solutions to obtain the IL-MXene/PNIPAM composite hydrogel via in-situ polymerization. ZIF-8@IL-MXene/PNIPAM nanocomposite hydrogels were obtained by in-situ growth of ZIF-8 on the pore walls of composite hydrogels. As-prepared nanocomposite hydrogel showed excellent mechanical properties and can withstand ten repeated compressions without any damage, the specific surface area increased by 100 times, and the maximum adsorption capacities for p-nitrophenol (4-NP), crystal violet (CV), and copper ion (Cu2+) were 198.40, 325.03, and 285.65 mg g-1, respectively, at room temperature. The VPTTs of all hydrogels ranged from 33 to 35 °C, so the desorption process can be achieved in deionized water at 35-40 °C, and its adsorption capacities after five adsorption-desorption cycles decreased to 79%, 91%, and 29% for 4-NP, CV, and Cu2+, respectively. The adsorption data fitting results follow pseudo-second-order kinetics and Freundlich models, which is based on multiple interactions between the functional groups contained in hydrogels and adsorbent molecules. The hydrogel is the first to realize the high-efficiency adsorption of phenols, dyes and metal ions in industrial wastewater simultaneously, and the preparation process of hydrogels is environmentally friendly. Also, giving hydrogel multifunctional adsorption is beneficial to promote the development of multifunctional adsorption materials.

Carbon vacancies enriched carbon nitride nanotubes for Pd coordination environment optimization: Highly efficient photocatalytic hydrodechlorination and CO2 cycloaddition

The use of easily available solar energy to achieve pollutants efficient degradation and waste carbon resource CO₂ utilization under mild conditions is highly desired. Herein, novel carbon vacancies enriched nanotubes graphitic carbon nitride (SCNT-500) has been successfully fabricated via melamine (MA) supramolecular hydrogen-bonded self-assembly in the presence of H₂SO₄. Pd NPs loaded carbon vacancies enriched carbon nitride nanotubes (Pd/SCNT-500) were used for photocatalytic chlorophenols hydrodechlorination and CO₂ cycloaddition with styrene oxide. Up to 6.93 s^-1 4-chlorophenol hydrodechlorination TOF and obviously improved CO₂ cycloaddition efficiency could be realized with Pd/SCNT-500. The improved photocatalytic efficiency should be related to the morphology and carbon vacancies based Pd coordination environment optimization. Such as, the surface area increased nanotubes structure promoted light harvesting along with photoelectrons and holes generation; the carbon vacancies improved excited electrons capture, photoinduced carriers recombination inhibition along with substrates adsorption with electron rich Pd NPs. Mechanism studies not only demonstrated the important role of atomic hydrogen and Pd coordination environment optimization in the chlorophenols hydrodechlorination, but also confirmed the promotion ability of photogenerated electrons on CO₂ cycloaddition.

Ionic liquid decorated MXene/Poly (N-isopropylacrylamide) composite hydrogel with high strength, chemical stability and strong adsorption

Organic phenolic pollutants in industrial wastewater cause severe environmental pollution and physiological damage. Poly (N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) hydrogels generally have poor mechanical strength and are also intrinsically frangible, limiting their widespread applications in wastewater treatment. Combining them with 2-dimensional materials can also only improve the mechanical properties of hydrogels. Here, we report a high-strength, chemical stability and strong adsorption MXene/poly (N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) thermosensitive composite hydrogel for efficient removal of phenolic pollutants from industrial wastewater. Ionic liquids (ILs) were grafted onto the surface of MXenes and introduced into NIPAM monomer solution to obtain composite hydrogels by in-situ polymerization for improved mechanical strength and adsorption capacity of the composite hydrogel. Compared with the MXene/PNIPAM composite hydrogel, the introduction of ILs simultaneously improves the mechanical and adsorption properties of the composite hydrogel. The ILs bind to the surface of MXene flakes through electrostatic interactions, which improved the thermal stability and oxidation resistance of MXenes while maintaining its good dispersion. Using 1-Ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (EMIMBF4) modified MXene (MXene-EMIMBF4) did not change significantly were observed after aging for 45 days. As-prepared composite hydrogels demonstrated excellent mechanical properties, reusability, and high adsorption capacity for p-Nitrophenol (4-NP). The MXene-EMIMBF4/PNIPAM hydrogel could recover after ten 95% strain compression cycles under the synergistic effect of chemical bonding and electrostatic attraction. Its maximum adsorption capacity for 4-NP was 200.29 mg g^-1 at room temperature, and the adsorption capacity maintained at ∼90% of its initial value after five adsorption cycles, which was related to the introduction of EMIMBF4 to form a denser network structure. The adsorption data followed the pseudo-second-order kinetics and Freundlich models.

Enhanced fluorescence quenching for p-nitrophenol in imidazolium ionic liquids using a europium-based fluorescent probe

p-Nitrophenol (PNP) is a toxic contaminant in water, the detection of which has attracted considerable attention. Since ionic liquids (ILs) have been widely used as popular solvents in both extraction and catalysts for PNP, the remediation of PNP is not limited to water and traditional organic solvents. Thus, it is significant to develop approaches for the detection of PNP in ILs. Accordingly, the present work is focused on the detection of PNP in a series of imidazolium-based ILs, 1-hexyl-3-methyl-imidazolium bromide ([Hmim]Br), 1-butyl-3-methyl-imidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([Bmim]BF4), 1-butyl-3-methyl-imidazolium trifluoromesulfonate ([Bmim]TfO), 1-butyl-3-methyl-imidazolium trifluoroacetate ([Bmim]TA), and 1-butyl-3-methyl-imidazolium nitrate ([Bmim]NO3), using a europium-based fluorescent probe, Na3[Eu(DPA)3] (DPA = 2, 6-pyridinedicarboxylic acid). This fluorescent probe showed excellent selectivity and sensitivity toward [Bmim]NO3 in aqueous solution. Further studies showed that not only the fluorescence performance of the europium complex was enhanced in the other four ILs compared with that in water, but also the detecting capability for PNP was improved. The order of the quenching efficiency in different solvents was: [Bmim]BF4 > [Bmim]TfO > [Hmim]Br > [Bmim]TA > water. The higher sensitivity for PNP in ILs was proven to be related to the efficient energy transfer of the europium complex and lower solvent polarity of the ILs. The quenching mechanism for the detection of PNP was established as being due to the ground state electrostatic interactions between the fluorescent probe and analyte, photoinduced electron transfer (PET) and inner filter effect (IFE).

Composite Porous Liquid for Recyclable Sequestration, Storage and In Situ Catalytic Conversion of Carbon Dioxide at Room Temperature

Permanent pores combined with fluidity renders flow processability to porous liquids otherwise not seen in porous solids. Although porous liquids have been utilized for sequestration of different gases and their separation, there is still a dearth of studies for deploying in situ chemical reactions to convert adsorbed gases into utility chemicals. Here, we show the design and development of a new type of solvent-less and hybrid (meso-)porous liquid composite, which, as demonstrated for the first time, can be used for in situ carbon mineralization of adsorbed CO₂ . The recyclable porous liquid composite comprising polymer-surfactant modified hollow silica nanorods and carbonic anhydrase enzyme not only sequesters (5.5 cm³  g^-1 at 273 K and 1 atm) and stores CO₂ but is also capable of driving an in situ enzymatic reaction for hydration of CO₂ to HCO₃ ^- ion, subsequently converting it to CaCO₃ due to reaction with pre-dissolved Ca²⁺ . Light and electron microscopy combined with X-ray diffraction reveals the nucleation and growth of calcite and aragonite crystals. Moreover, the liquid-like property of the porous composite material can be harnessed by executing the same reaction via diffusion of complimentary Ca²⁺ and HCO₃ ^- ions through different compartments separated by an interfacial channel. These studies provide a proof of concept of deploying chemical reactions within porous liquids for developing utility chemical from adsorbed molecules.

Ionic liquids and deep eutectic solvents for the recovery of phenolic compounds: effect of ionic liquids structure and process parameters

Water pollution is a severe and challenging issue threatening the sustainable development of human civilization. Besides other pollutants, waste fluid streams contain phenolic compounds. These have an adverse effect on the human health and marine ecosystem due to their toxic, mutagenic, and carcinogenic nature. Therefore, it is necessary to remove such phenolic pollutants from waste stream fluids prior to discharging to the environment. Different methods have been proposed to remove phenolic compounds from wastewater, including extraction using ionic liquids (ILs) and deep eutectic solvent (DES), a class of organic salts having melting point below 100 °C and tunable physicochemical properties. The purpose of this review is to present the progress in utilizing ILs and DES for phenolic compound extraction from waste fluid streams. The effects of IL structural characteristics, such as anion type, cation type, alkyl chain length, and functional groups will be discussed. In addition, the impact of key process parameters such as pH, phenol concentration, phase ratio, and temperature will be also described. More importantly, several ideas for addressing the limitations of the treatment process and improving its efficiency and industrial viability will be presented. These ideas may form the basis for future studies on developing more effective IL-based processes for treating wastewaters contaminated with phenolic pollutants, to address a growing worldwide environmental problem.

Pore wettability for enhanced oil recovery, contaminant adsorption and oil/water separation: A review

Wettability, a fundamental property of porous surface, occupies a pivotal position in the fields of enhanced oil recovery, organic contaminant adsorption and oil/water separation. In this review, wettability and the related applications are systematically expounded from the perspectives of hydrophilicity, hydrophobicity and super-wettability. Four common measurement methods are generalized and categorized into contact angle method and ratio method, and influencing factors (temperature, the type and layer charge of matrix, the species and structure of modifier) as well as their corresponding altering methods (inorganic, organic and thermal modification etc.) of wettability are overviewed. Different roles of wettability alteration in enhanced oil recovery, organic contaminant adsorption as well as oil/water separation are summarized. Among these applications, firstly, the hydrophilic alteration plays a key role in recovery of the oil production process; secondly, hydrophobic circumstance of surface drives the organic pollutant adsorption more effectually; finally, super-wetting property of matrix ensures the high-efficient separation of oil from water. This review also identifies importance, challenges and future prospects of wettability alteration, and as a result, furnishes the essential guidance for selection and design inspiration of the wettability modification, and supports the further development of pore wettability application.
