Ionic liquid induced removal of Rhodamine B from water

Sonophotocatalytic removal of organic dyes in real water environments using reusable BiSI@PVDF-HFP nanocomposite membranes

Focusing on the uncontrolled discharge of organic dyes, a known threat to human health and aquatic ecosystems, this work employs a dual-functional catalyst approach, by immobilizing a synthesized bismuth sulfur iodide (BiSI) into a poly (vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) polymeric matrix for multifunctional water remediation. The resulting BiSI@PVDF nanocomposite membrane (NCM), with 20 wt% filler content, maintains a highly porous structure without compromising morphology or thermal properties. Demonstrating efficiency in natural pH conditions, the NCM removes nearly all Rhodamine B (RhB) within 1 h, using a combined sonophotocatalytic process. Langmuir and pseudo-second-order models describe the remediation process, achieving a maximum removal capacity (Qmax) of 72.2 mg/g. In addition, the combined sonophotocatalysis achieved a degradation rate ten and five times higher (0.026 min-1) than photocatalysis (0.002 min-1) and sonocatalysis (0.010 min-1). Furthermore, the NCM exhibits notable reusability over five cycles without efficiency losses and efficiencies always higher than 90%, highlighting its potential for real water matrices. The study underscores the suitability of BiSI@PVDF as a dual-functional catalyst for organic dye degradation, showcasing synergistic adsorption, photocatalysis, and sonocatalysis for water remediation.

Preparation and Properties of Self-Cross-Linking Hydrogels Based on Chitosan Derivatives and Oxidized Sodium Alginate

A self-cross-linking and biocompatible hydrogel has wide application potential in the field of tissue engineering. In this work, an easily available, biodegradable, and resilient hydrogel was prepared using a self-cross-linking method. This hydrogel was composed of N-2-hydroxypropyl trimethyl ammonium chloride chitosan (HACC) and oxidized sodium alginate (OSA). A stable and reversible cross-linking network was formed by the Schiff base self-cross-linked and hydrogen bonding. The addition of a shielding agent (NaCl) may weaken the intense electrostatic effect between HACC and OSA and solve the problem of flocculation caused by the rapid formation of ionic bonds, which provided an extended time for the Schiff base self-cross-linked reaction for forming a homogeneous hydrogel. Interestingly, the shortest time for the formation of the HACC/OSA hydrogel was within 74 s and the hydrogel had a uniform porous structure and enhanced mechanical properties. The HACC/OSA hydrogel withstood large compression deformation due to improved elasticity. What's more, this hydrogel possessed favorable swelling property, biodegradation, and water retention. The HACC/OSA hydrogels have great antibacterial properties against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli and demonstrated good cytocompatibility as well. The HACC/OSA hydrogels have a good sustained release effect on rhodamine (model drug). Thus, the obtained self-cross-linked HACC/OSA hydrogels in this study have potential applications in the field of biomedical carriers.

A novel and controllable SERS system for crystal violet and Rhodamine B detection based on copper nanonoodle substrates

Copper nanostructures have attracted more and more attention due to low preparation cost, similar thermal conductivity and optical characteristics to silver nanostructures. A novel macroscopic dendritic copper nanonoodles with the length of 3-50 mm prepared by solid-state ionics method at 10 μA direct current electric field (DCEF) using fast ionic conductor RbCu₄Cl₃I₂ films was reported. The surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) performance of prepared copper nanonoodles was detected by crystal violet (CV) and rhodamine B (RB) aqueous solution as analyte molecules. The results present that the copper nanonoodles assembled by short-range order copper nanowires and the diameters of nanowires changed from 20 nm to 80 nm, many regularly arranged nanoparticles with the diameter from 5 to 10 nm existed on the prepared copper nanonoodles, which lead to the nanonoodles have high surface roughness. The copper nanonoodles contain only Cu element, no O element and the fractal dimension of copper nanonoodles is 1.355 because of macroscopic dendritic structures. The prepared copper nanonoodles composed of pure Cu have high surface roughness and the free electrons on the rough copper nanonoodles resonate with the atomic nuclei inside the copper nanonoodles to form a locally enhanced electromagnetic field under the excitation of incident light, so the limiting concentrations for CV and RB detected by the prepared copper nanonoodles are as low as 1 × 10^-11 mol/L and 1 × 10^-12 mol/L, respectively. The centimeter-scale copper nanonoodles with low limiting concentration of analyte molecules can be used to detect harmful food additives.

Iron oxide (Fe3O4)-laden titanium carbide (Ti3C2Tx) MXene stacks for the efficient sequestration of cationic dyes from aqueous solution

We prepared two-dimensional (2D) stack-structured magnetic iron oxide (Fe₃O₄) nanoparticle anchored titanium carbide (Ti₃C₂T_x) MXene material (Ti₃C₂T_x/Fe₃O₄). It was used as a potential adsorbent to remove carcinogenic cationic dyes, such as methylene blue (MB) and rhodamine B (Rh B), from aqueous solutions. Ti₃C₂T_x/Fe₃O₄ exhibited maximum adsorption capacities of 153 and 86 mg g^-1 for MB and Rh B dyes, respectively. Batch adsorption experimental data fits the Langmuir model well, revealing monolayer adsorption of MB and Rh B onto the adsorption sites of Ti₃C₂T_x/Fe₃O₄. Additionally, Ti₃C₂T_x/Fe₃O₄ showed rapid MB/Rh B adsorption kinetics and attained equilibrium within 45 min. Moreover, Ti₃C₂T_x/Fe₃O₄ demonstrated recyclability over four cycles with high stability due to the presence of magnetic Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles. Furthermore, it exhibited remarkable selectivities of 91% and 88% in the presence of co-existing cationic and anionic dyes, respectively. Given the extraordinary adsorption capacities, Ti₃C₂T_x/Fe₃O₄ may be a promising material for the effective removal of cationic dyes from aqueous media.

Biomass-based superhydrophobic coating with tunable colors and excellent robustness

Multicolored superhydrophobic coating with high durability has been receiving tremendous attention in decorative applications. Herein, a facile method to fabricate multicolored superhydrophobic coating with excellent robustness has been developed by using cellulose and chitosan. The multicolored coatings can be obtained through single dyeing or mixed dyeing based on three primary dyes. The coating can be applied on hard substrates (e.g. glass, aluminum sheet) and soft substrates (e.g. cotton fabric) by diverse methods including spraying, dip-coating and painting. The colorful coating firmly adheres to the substrates due to the multiple interactions (siloxane covalent bonds and hydrogen bonds). The colorful coating exhibits water-repellant behaviors and can withstand sandpaper abrasion, tape-peeling cycles, water impact, salt spray test and UV environments. Furthermore, the multicolored coating can be used as a new type of pigment for painting on different substrates and is expected to have a huge potential application in technological design or decoration.

Lab at home: 3D printed and low-cost experiments for thermal engineering and separation processes in COVID-19 time

The SARS-CoV-2 virus pandemic has meant that face-to-face teaching activities have had to be replaced by distance learning. Experimental laboratories have been replaced, in most cases, by the utilization of experimental data or by simulations. In this work, we have designed four laboratory experiments to be conducted by students of thermal engineering and separation processes during confinement by COVID-19 at home, to maintain competence acquisition and learning outcomes. A mixed methodology of the educational models of autonomous learning and cooperative learning has been used in obtaining the experimental data and writing the laboratory report. Installations for thermal engineering have been 3D designed and printed and are aimed at studying the heat transmission by conduction and convection in heat exchangers. This work describes in detail the activities carried out and shares the files used in the 3D printing of the installations. The laboratory experiments of separation processes are focused on the removal of a dye (rhodamine B) from an aqueous solution by liquid-liquid extraction and adsorption. A survey made to the undergraduate students has confirmed that the methodology and installations designed have been satisfactory for their expectations on the acquisition of knowledge and skills in both subjects.

Optimization of Sibipiruna activated carbon preparation by simplex-centroid mixture design for simultaneous adsorption of rhodamine B and metformin

The present paper reports the application of augmented simplex-centroid mixture design to obtain a high BET surface area activated carbon using as reactants KOH, K₂CO₃ and K₂C₂O₄. The optimum mixture composition was 2.51 g of KOH, 0.49 g of K₂CO₃ and absence of K₂C₂O₄, generating an optimized AC (AC_op) with S_BET value equals to 1984 m² g^-1. The results herein obtained show that low amounts of K₂CO₃ can catalyze the pore development in the presence of KOH, increasing the surface area. Furthermore, the fractal dimensions of AC_op are greater than 2.72, indicating the material has a complex pore structure with irregularities self-similar upon variations of resolution, as seen by SEM images. The TPD curves showed that the AC_op has different oxygenated molecular fragments, which agrees with the pH_PZC value (5.05). The AC_op was applied in the adsorption of rhodamine B (RhB) and metformin (Met) in both binary and monocomponent systems. The simultaneous adsorption at 30 °C reveals that the adsorption capacity of RhB is 630.94 mg g^-1, while for Met the value is 103.83 mg g^-1.

Rhodamine B oxidation promoted by P450-bioinspired Jacobsen catalysts/cellulose systems

P450-bioinspired Jacobsen/Cell(NEt2) catalysts have been applied in RhB dye oxidation, which is used illegally in food industries of some countries.
