Mixed-micellar approach for enhanced dye entrapment: A spectroscopic study

Unveiling the Role of Nonionic Surfactants in Enhancing Cefotaxime Drug Solubility: A UV-Visible Spectroscopic Investigation in Single and Mixed Micellar Formulations

This study reports the interfacial phenomenon of cefotaxime in combination with nonionic surfactants, Triton X-100 (TX-100) and Tween-80 (TW-80), and their mixed micellar formulations. Cefotaxime was enclosed in a micellar system to improve its solubility and effectiveness. TX-100 and TW-80 were used in an amphiphilic self-assembly process to create the micellar formulation. The effect of the addition of TX-100, a nonionic surfactant, on the ability of TW-80 to solubilize the drug was examined. The values of the critical micelle concentration (CMC) were determined via UV-Visible spectroscopy. Gibbs free energies (ΔGp and ΔGb), the partition coefficient (Kx), and the binding constant (Kb) were also computed. In a single micellar system, the partition coefficient (Kx) was found to be 33.78 × 106 and 2.78 × 106 in the presence of TX-100 and TW-80, respectively. In a mixed micellar system, the value of the partition coefficient for the CEF/TW-80 system is maximum (5.48 × 106) in the presence of 0.0019 mM of TX-100, which shows that TX-100 significantly enhances the solubilizing power of micelles. It has been demonstrated that these surfactants are effective in enhancing the solubility and bioavailability of therapeutic compounds. This study elaborates on the physicochemical characteristics and solubilization of reactive drugs in single and mixed micellar media. This investigation, conducted in the presence of surfactants, shows a large contribution to the binding process via both hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interactions.

High-efficiency adsorption removal of CR and MG dyes using AlOOH fibers embedded with porous CoFe2O4 nanoparticles

Owing to the toxicity and difficulty in degradation, how to the effective separation for the residual dyes in the aqueous solution is still an issue with great challenge in the area of environmental protection. Now, to high-efficiency removal of organic dyes from the aqueous solution, we design a unique AlOOH/CoFe₂O₄ adsorbent with porous CoFe₂O₄ nanoparticles embedded on the AlOOH fibers using a simple hydrothermal technique and calcination process. The structural properties and surface characteristics of the AlOOH/CoFe₂O₄ composites are detailedly analyzed by XRD, FTIR, XPS, TEM and SEM. Here, the high S_BET and specific porous structure are beneficial to improve the adsorption performance of AlOOH/CoFe₂O₄ adsorbents. Especially, when the molar ratio of AlOOH to CoFe₂O₄ in the AlOOH/CoFe₂O₄ fibers is 1:1, an optimal performance on adsorbing anionic Congo red (CR) and cationic methyl green (MG) dyes can be obtained at pH = 6.29, where the corresponding maximum adsorption capacities reach up to 565.0 and 423.7 mg g^-1, respectively. Factors leading to the change in the ability of adsorbing CR and MG dyes are systematically discussed, including contact time, temperature, initial concentrations, and pH values of the solutions. Meanwhile, the uptake of CR and MG dyes can best conform to Langmuir isotherm model and pseudo-second-order adsorption kinetics. The thermodynamic analysis verifies that the dye adsorption process is spontaneous and endothermic. Moreover, from the point view of practical application, the good reusability further makes the as-synthesized magnetic AlOOH/CoFe₂O₄ composite be a perfect adsorbent with efficiently removing both anionic and cationic dyes from aqueous solutions.

Different Agglomeration Processes Induced by the Varied Interaction of Fe-Fe Analogues with Differently Charged Surfactants

The catalytic activity of Prussian blue analogues (PBAs) is mainly tuned via the control of material sizes and morphologies. However, the shapes and sizes of many PBAs are difficult to control. In this work, a facile approach is demonstrated using differently charged surfactants to tune the catalytic activity of PBAs. Fe-Fe PBAs prepared with non-ionic P123, cationic cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, and anionic sodium dodecyl sulfate are chosen to study the effect of surfactant charges on the catalytic activity. The transesterification of propylene carbonate to dimethyl carbonate by methanol is selected as a model reaction. Owing to the different agglomeration processes of PB particles after modified with differently charged surfactants, significantly varied shapes and sizes were observed. Accordingly, the catalytic activity is greatly varied by adding surfactants. The different catalytic activities may arise from the different behaviors of agglomeration of PB particles after surfactant modification as well as the material size and shape changes. Besides, apparent activation energies for PBs adding different surfactants were derived. Finally, the agglomeration mechanism of PB particles in the presence of differently charged surfactants was proposed.
