Abstract
The present study focuses on an environmental approach based on the use of an eco-friendly corrosion inhibitor from the Citrullus colocynthis fruit extract for enhancement corrosion resistance of carbon steel (C-S) in acid medium as an alternative to various organic and non-organic chemical inhibitors. The evaluation of the inhibition properties of the fruit methanolic extract of Citrullus colocynthis (CCE) were performed in molar hydrochloric acid (1 M HCl) medium using gravimetric and electrochemical (potentiodynamic polarization and AC impedance) techniques as well as surface analyses. CCE is rich in amino acids, mainly citrulline and β-(pyrazo-1-yl)-L-analine molecules. Based on the weight loss evaluation, the results demonstrated that this plant extract acts as an effective corrosion inhibitor and a protection level of 93.6% was attained at 500 ppm of CCE after 6 h of metal exposure at 303 K. According to polarization curves, CCE functions as a mixed-type inhibitor. In addition, AC impedance analyses have shown that the incorporation of CCE into the corrosive solution leads to a decrease in load capacity, while improving the charge/discharge function at the interface. This suggests the possibility of the formation of an adsorbed layer on the C-S surface. In addition, scanning electron microscope (SEM) observation, contact angle measurements, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analyses supported the development of a protective film over CS substrate surface afterwards addition of CCE. Langmuir and/or Temkin isotherms can be used to characterize the adsorption of this organic inhibitor on the C-S surface. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) has revealed that the inhibiting effect of CCE on the corrosion of C-S in 1 M HCl solution is mainly controlled by a chemisorption process and the inhibitive layer is composed of an iron oxide/hydroxide mixture where CCE molecules are incorporated. In order to understand the relationship between the molecular structure and anti-corrosion effectiveness of these inhibitor molecules, quantum chemical studies were carried out using density functional theory (DFT) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation.

Insights into the use of two novel supramolecular compounds as corrosion inhibitors for stainless steel in a chloride environment: experimental as well as theoretical investigation. RSC Adv 2023; 13:35305-35320. Abstract
Novel supramolecular (SCPs) compounds such as: {[Ni (EIN)4(NCS)2]}, SCP1 and {[Co (EIN)4 (NCS)2]}, SCP2 have been studied using weight loss (WL) and electrochemical tests on the corrosion performance of stainless steel 304 (SS304) in 1.0 M hydrochloric acid (HCl) solution. The experimental results revealed that inhibition efficacy (η%) rises with increasing concentrations of SCPs and reached 92.3% and 89.6% at 16 × 10-6 M, 25 °C, from the WL method for SCP1 and SCP2, respectively. However, by raising the temperature, η% was reduced. Polarization measurements (PDP) showed that the SCPs molecules represent a mixed-type. The SCPs were adsorbed on a SS304 surface physically, and the Langmuir adsorption isotherm was found to govern the adsorption process. The determination of thermodynamic parameters was carried out at various temperatures. Quantum chemical calculations were calculated to prove the adsorption process of SCP components, using the molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and electron density map. The inhibition performance of SCPs for SS304 dissolution in an acidic medium was proved to be excellent through FT-IR and AFM analysis. The results obtained from all measurements exhibit a high level of agreement with each other.

Effective corrosion inhibition of mild steel using novel 1,3,4-oxadiazole-pyridine hybrids: Synthesis, electrochemical, morphological, and computational insights. ENVIRONMENTAL RESEARCH 2023; 234:116555. [PMID: 37419199 DOI: 10.1016/j.envres.2023.116555] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [MESH Headings] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 01/04/2023] [Revised: 06/13/2023] [Accepted: 07/02/2023] [Indexed: 07/09/2023]
Abstract
An easy synthesis of two 1,3,4-oxadiazole derivatives, namely, 2-phenyl-5-(pyridin-3-yl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole (POX) and 2-(4-methoxyphenyl)-5-(pyridin-3-yl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole (4-PMOX), and their corrosion-inhibition efficacy against mild steel corrosion in 1 N HCl, is evaluated using weight loss from 303 to 323 K, Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS), Potentiodynamic Polarization (PDP), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX), UV-Vis spectroscopy, along with theoretical evaluation. Both POX and 4-PMOX exhibit excellent inhibition efficiency, with values reaching 97.83% and 98% at 500 ppm, respectively. The PDP analysis reveals that both derivatives act as mixed-type inhibitors. The Langmuir adsorption isotherm provides insights into the adsorption phenomena, demonstrating that 4-PMOX exhibits superior adsorption behavior on the mild steel surface compared to POX. This finding is further supported by SEM, DFT, RDF, and MSD analyses. Quantum mechanical parameters, including EHOMO, ELUMO, dipole moment (μ), energy gap (ΔE), etc., are in good agreement with the effectiveness of inhibition performance revealing ΔE values of 3.10 and 2.75 for POX and 4-PMOX, respectively. The results obtained from this study hold significant implications for researchers aiming to design more efficient organic inhibitors to combat metal corrosion.

Unraveling the Adsorption Mechanism and Anti-Corrosion Functionality of Dextrin and Inulin as Eco-Friendly Biopolymers for the Corrosion of Reinforced Steel in 1.0 M HCl: A Thermodynamic and Kinetic Approach. Polymers (Basel) 2023; 15:3144. Abstract
Reinforcing steel (RS) is mainly used in building construction and many industries, but it suffers from corrosion problems, especially in acidic environments. Biopolymers are characterized by their unique chemical composition, as they contain a variety of functional groups that are capable of binding strongly to the metal surface and forming a protective layer on it. Herewith, two biopolymers, viz. dextrin (Dex) and inulin (Inu), were tested as eco-friendly inhibitors for the corrosion of RS in 1.0 M HCl medium at different temperatures. Various experimental tools were utilized in this research. The inhibition efficiencies (% IEs) of the tested polymeric compounds were improved by increasing their doses while reducing with rising temperature. The % IEs of Dex and Inu at a dose of 500 mg/L reached 85% and 93%, respectively. The examined biopolymers displayed cathodic/anodic behavior (mixed type) with a foremost anodic one. The acquired higher % IEs were demonstrated by intense adsorption of Dex and Inu on the RS surface fitting the Langmuir isotherm. The influence of rising temperature in the range of 288-318 K on the corrosion behavior was examined, and the evaluated thermodynamic and kinetic parameters sustained the mechanism of physical adsorption of the polymeric inhibitors. Additionally, the kinetics of corrosion, as well as its inhibition by Dex and Inu, were also investigated. The SEM micrographs of the RS surfaces were accorded with all utilized experimental tools. The results gained from all used tools were discovered to be in good agreement with each other.
