Kinetic and equilibrium study of graphene and copper oxides modified nanocomposites for metal ions adsorption from binary metal aqueous solution

Presently, the main cause of pollution of natural water resources is heavy metal ions. The removal of metal ions such as nickel (Ni2+) and cadmium (Cd2+) has been given considerable attention due to their health and environmental risks. In this regard, for wastewater treatment containing heavy metal ions, graphene oxide (GO) nanocomposites with metal oxide nanoparticles (NPs) attained significant importance. In this study, graphene oxide stacked with copper oxide nanocomposites (GO/CuO-NCs) were synthesized and characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), and atomic force microscopy (AFM) analytical procedures. The prepared GO/CuO-NCs were applied for the removal of Ni2+ and Cd2+ ions from a binary metal ion system in batch and continuous experiments. The obtained results revealed that GO/CuO-NCs exhibited the highest removal efficiencies of Ni2+ (89.60% ± 2.12%) and Cd2+ (97.10% ± 1.91%) at the optimum values of pH: 8, dose: 0.25 g, contact time: 60 min, and at 50 ppm initial metal ion concentration in a batch study. However, 4 mL/min flow rate, 50 ppm initial concentration, and 2 cm bed height were proved to be the suitable conditions for metal ion adsorption in the column study. The kinetic adsorption data exhibited the best fitting with the pseudo-second-order model. The adsorption isotherm provided the best-fitting data in the Langmuir isotherm model. This study suggested that the GO/CuO nanocomposites have proved to be efficient adsorbents for Ni2+ and Cd2+ ions from a binary metal system.

Adsorption and Dispersion Effect of Sodium Lignosulfonate on Fine SiC Particles in Aqueous Media

This study presented a novel modification method for fine SiC powder by using sodium lignosulfonate as a dispersant. The adsorption behavior of sodium lignosulfonate on the SiC/water interface and its effect on the performance of a fine SiC slurry were systematically investigated. The adsorption results showed that sodium lignosulfonate formed monolayer adsorption on the surface of fine SiC and that the saturated adsorption capacity was 1.3263 mg/g. The adsorption reached equilibrium within 3 h and was mainly controlled by active sites on the SiC surface. The dispersion, stability, and zeta potential of modified SiC powder were improved after sodium lignosulfonate adsorption. The zeta potential of modified SiC reached a minimum value of -44.8 mV at pH 12. Modified SiC suspensions had great stability in a wider pH range of 6-12. Modified SiC slurry with 54 vol % solid loading had a low viscosity of 173 mPa·s at pH 10. Subsequently, coarse SiC powder was added for slip casting. A mixed slurry with high solid loading (69 vol %) and low viscosity (583 mPa·s) was prepared using modified SiC and coarse SiC powders at a mass ratio of 2:3. Finally, recrystallized SiC green body with high density (2.6492 g/cm3) was obtained.

Synthesis of an IRMOF-1@SiO2 Core-Shell and Amino-Functionalization with APTES for the Adsorption of Urea and Creatinine Using a Fixed-Bed Column Study

Kidney dysfunction is a clinical disease that disables the kidneys to remove the waste products and uremic toxins from the circulation and may lead to fatal kidney failure. Hemodialysis is advantageous in this circumstance since it prevents the accumulation of waste products in the body and facilitates the removal of uremic toxins. However, hemodialysis cannot entirely remove some uremic toxins, such as urea and creatinine. In this paper, a high-performance fixed-bed column for urea and creatinine removal was offered. As a result, a MOF layer was built on SiO₂, which was then amino-functionalized using APTES. Numerous assays were used to characterize the final adsorbent. The adsorption of urea and creatinine was evaluated in batch and continuous conditions. Thus, it was demonstrated that the adsorption behavior of A(0.2)-IRMOF-1@SiO₂ followed the Langmuir isotherm, and it exhibited the maximum adsorption capacity. The batch experiment determined that urea and creatinine had an adsorption capacity of 1325.73 and 625.00 mg·g^-1, respectively. The adsorption capacity was increased, which was due to the presence of amino groups (APTES) on the MOF surface. The continuous operation was evaluated using the A(0.2)-IRMOF-1@SiO₂ fixed-bed column. Thomas and Nelson's models were examined to achieve a better understanding of the adsorption behaviors. The A(0.2)-IRMOF-1@SiO₂ fixed-bed column successfully removed 92.57% of urea and 80.47% of creatinine. The separation factor for urea in comparison to creatinine was 2.40 in the A(0.2)-IRMOF-1@SiO₂ fixed-bed column.

Polyethylenimine-Crosslinked 3-Aminopropyltriethoxysilane-Grafted Multiwall Carbon Nanotubes for Efficient Adsorption of Reactive Yellow 2 from Water

This research intended to report amine-functionalized multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) prepared by a simple method for efficient and rapid removal of Reactive Yellow 2 (RY2) from water. EDS analysis showed that the N content increased from 0 to 2.42% and from 2.42 to 8.66% after modification by 3-Aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) and polyethylenimine (PEI), respectively. BET analysis displayed that the specific surface area, average pore size, and total pore volume were reduced from 405.22 to 176.16 m²/g, 39.67 to 6.30 nm, and 4.02 to 0.28 cm³/g, respectively. These results proved that the PEI/APTES-MWCNTs were successfully prepared. pH edge experiments indicated that pH 2 was optimal for RY2 removal. At pH 2 and 25 °C, the time required for adsorption equilibrium was 10, 15, and 180 min at initial concentrations of 50, 100, and 200 mg/L, respectively; and the maximum RY2 uptake calculated by the Langmuir model was 714.29 mg/g. Thermodynamic studies revealed that the adsorption process was spontaneous and endothermic. Moreover, 0-0.1 mol/L of NaCl showed negligible effect on RY2 removal by PEI/APTES-MWCNTs. Five adsorption/desorption cycles confirmed the good reusability of PEI/APTES-MWCNTs in RY2 removal. Overall, the PEI/APTES-MWCNTs are a potential and efficient adsorbent for reactive dye wastewater treatment.

Selective Removal of Boron from Aqueous Solutions Using ECH@NGM Aerogels with Excellent Hydrophilic and Mechanical Properties: Performance and Response Surface Methodology Analysis

The remediation of environmental boron contamination has received extensive research attention. The adsorbent ECH@NGM aerogel with high hydrophilic and mechanical properties was synthesized to remove boron. The ECH@NGM aerogel had a high adsorption capacity of 81.11 mg/g, which was 14.50% higher than that of commercial boron-selective resin Amberlite IRA743. The Freundlich model and pseudo-second-order model described the adsorption behavior well. In addition, the response surface methodology (RSM) could predict the experimental outcomes and optimize the reaction conditions, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and control tests were utilized to investigate probable adsorption mechanisms. These data showed that the B ← N coordination bond was the primary adsorption force. The adsorbent had good resistance to interference from coexisting salts, high reusability, good adsorption performance even after five reuse cycles, and a high desorption rate in a relatively short time. The adsorption performance in real brines could be maintained at 80%. Therefore, this work not only provided ECH@NGM aerogels for the removal of boron from brine but also elucidated the main adsorption processes between N-containing adsorbents and boron, facilitating the design of future adsorbents for boron removal.

Carbon dot-functionalized macroporous adsorption resin for bifunctional ultra-sensitive detection and fast removal of iron(III) ions

Heavy metal pollution has spread around the world with the development of industry, posing a major threat to human health. It is urgent to design and fabricate bifunctional materials for detection and adsorption of heavy metal ions. Herein, poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) microspheres, a kind of common macroporous adsorption resin (MAR), were employed as the matrix, and carbon dots (CDs) with excellent optical properties were grafted onto the surface of MAR by surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP) and photo-initiated "thiol-yne" click chemistry. The synthesized MAR@poly(PA)@CD could produce fluorescence quenching with Fe³⁺. A simple fluorescence spectrometric method for detection of Fe³⁺ was established. The fluorescence intensity of MAR@poly(PA)@CD decreased linearly with the concentration of Fe³⁺ in the range of 0-70 nmol L^-1, with a limit of detection (LOD) of 6.6 nmol L^-1, which had the potential for trace detection. In addition, after SI-ATRP modification, many adsorption sites were generated on the surface of MAR, and the adsorption capacity for Fe³⁺ was 23.8 mg g^-1. Isothermal and kinetic adsorption experiments were more consistent with the Langmuir model (r = 0.9992) and pseudo-second-order model (r = 0.9902), indicating that the adsorption was monolayer adsorption and chemical adsorption, respectively. MAR@poly(PA)@CD with dual functions of detecting and adsorbing Fe³⁺ was successfully prepared, showing great application prospects in the environmental field.

High-Performance Material for the Effective Removal of Uranyl Ion from Solution: Computationally Supported Experimental Studies

Adsorption is a widely used method for pollution removal and for the recovery of valuable species. In recent years, the use of metal-organic compounds among the adsorbents used in adsorption studies has increased. In this study, the performance of the water-insoluble Fe complex as a metal organic framework (MOF-Fe-Ta) of water-soluble tannic acid, which is not used as an adsorbent in uranium recovery and removal, was investigated. For the characterization of the new synthesized material, Fourier transform infrared, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction analyses were performed. The changes in the adsorption process based on various parameters were investigated and discussed. The point of zero charges value of the adsorbent was found as 5.52. It was noticed that the adsorption increases as the pH increases. Analyzing the effect of concentration on adsorption, we determined which model explained the adsorption better. The monolayer capacity of the adsorbent determined in light of the Langmuir model was reported as 0.347 mol kg^-1. The Freundlich constant, namely the β value obtained in the Freundlich model, which is a measure of surface heterogeneity, was found to be 0.434, and the E_DR value, which was found from the Dubinin-Raduskevich model and accepted as a measure of adsorption energy, was 10.3 kJ mol^-1. The adsorption was kinetically explained by the pseudo-second-order model and the adsorption rate constant was reported as 0.15 mol^-1 kg min^-1. The effect of temperature on adsorption was studied; it was emphasized that adsorption was energy consuming, that is, endothermic and ΔH was found as 7.56 kJ mol^-1. The entropy of adsorption was positive as 69.3 J mol^-1 K^-1. As expected, the Gibbs energy of adsorption was negative (-13.1 kJ mol^-1 at 25 °C), so adsorption was considered as a spontaneous process. Additionally, the power and mechanism of the interaction between studied adsorbent and adsorbate are explained through density functional theory computations. Computationally obtained data supported the experimental studies.

Highly Efficient and Simultaneous Removal of Cr(VI) and Imidacloprid through a Ferrocene-Modified MIL-100(Fe) Composite from an Aqueous Solution

A novel nanocomposite [Fc-MIL-100(Fe)] was constructed by combining ferrocene (Fc) with the porous structural metal-organic framework [MIL-100(Fe)]. The proposed composite material could simultaneously and efficiently remove hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] and imidacloprid and reduced strongly noxious Cr(VI) to weakly noxious trivalent chromium [Cr(III)]. The removal efficiencies of the composite material for Cr(VI) and imidacloprid could reach 95% after 15 h. The adsorption process was determined by kinetics, isotherms, and thermodynamics. The results demonstrated that the adsorption kinetics of Cr(VI) followed the pseudo-second-order model mainly by chemisorption; meanwhile, the adsorption of imidacloprid by the material conformed to the pseudo-first-order kinetics, which indicated that physical adsorption was the main process. Additionally, the intraparticle diffusion model revealed that the uptake of imidacloprid and Cr(VI) occurred via intraparticle diffusion at the composite material. The adsorption procedure for Cr(VI) was fitted to the Langmuir model (R² = 0.995) via monolayer adsorption, and that for imidacloprid was fitted to the Freundlich model (R² = 0.995) due to multilayer or heterogeneous adsorption. The thermodynamic research confirmed that the adsorption procedure was exothermic and spontaneous. Infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectra, and the pH effect implied that intermolecular hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interaction played a crucial role during the removal process. Fc-MIL-100(Fe) also exhibited long-term stability and satisfactory regeneration and reusability. Therefore, this method may enhance an environmentally friendly and prospective approach for concurrently removing imidacloprid and Cr(VI) from wastewater.

Physicochemical modification of corn straw biochar to improve performance and its application of constructed wetland substrate to treat city tail water

Corn straw is rich in resources, and the preparation of biochar as the constructed wetland (CW) substrate is an effective measure to realize high-value resource utilization. The objective of this paper was to improve the treatment effect of CW on city tail water, the freeze-thaw cycles (FTCs) modification and chemical modification (KMnO₄, NaOH and H₂SO₄) of straw biochar and the utilization of modified straw biochar in CW were studied. The modification characteristics of straw biochar were discussed through scanning electron microscope, element determination, pore structure determination, X-ray diffraction analysis, Fourier transform infrared reflection analysis, CO₂ adsorption and desorption experiment and application experiment of CW (no plants and plants). The results show that under the influence of strong oxidation of KMnO₄, the combination of KMnO₄ and FTCs modification is easy to cause the destruction of biochar structure, and the content of carbon element is reduced. Except for the combined modification of NaOH and FTCs, other composite modifications have little effect on the crystal structure and functional groups of straw biochar. The adsorption capacity of CO₂ by FTCs modified biochar increased by 20.4%, and the adsorption capacity of CO₂ by H₂SO₄ and FTCs composite modified biochar increased by 23.0%. The effect of H₂SO₄ modification of straw biochar based on FTCs modification is obviously better than that of NaOH and KMnO₄. The research results are of great significance to improve the material structure of biochar and the purification effect of CW on city tail water.

Synthesis of Iron-Based Carbon Microspheres with Tobacco Waste Liquid and Waste Iron Residue for Cd(II) Removal from Water and Soil

Herein, a novel magnetic iron-based carbon microsphere was prepared by cohydrothermal treatment of tobacco waste liquid (TWL) and waste iron residue (WIR) to form WIR@TWL. After that, WIR@TWL was coated with sodium polyacrylate (S.P.) to fabricate WIR@TWL@SP, whose removal efficiency for bivalent cadmium (Cd(II)) was studied in water and soil. As a result, WIR@TWL@SP possessed a high Cd(II) removal efficiency, which could reach 98.5% within 2 h. The adsorption process was consistent with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model because of the higher value of adjusted R2 (0.99). The thermodynamic data showed that the adsorption process was spontaneous (ΔG° < 0) and exothermic (ΔH° = 32.42 KJ·mol-1 > 0). Cd(II) removal mechanisms also include cation exchange, electrostatic attraction, hydrogen-bond interaction, and cation-π interaction. Notably, pot experiments demonstrated that WIR@TWL@SP could effectively reduce Cd absorption by plants in water and soil. Thus, this study offers an effective method for remediating Cd(II)-contaminated water and soil and may have a practical application value.

CO2-responsive functional cotton fibers decorated with Ag nanoparticles for "smart" selective and enhanced dye adsorption

Novel Ag nanoparticles (NPs) decorated CO₂-responsive cotton fiber (PCCF@Ag) as eco-friendly adsorbent was prepared via in-situ growth of Ag NPs on the poly(2-(dimethylamino) ethyl methacrylate-co-4-acryloyloxybenzophenone) coated cotton fiber. The as-prepared PCCF@Ag displayed excellent adsorption performance toward both anionic and cationic dyes with or without CO₂ stimulation, even under a wide range of pH from 3 to 11. The maximum adsorption capacities of the as-prepared PCCF@Ag toward anionic dye (1538.5 mg g^-1 for MO) and cationic dyes (944.0 mg g^-1 for MEB and 415.6 mg g^-1 for NR) were satisfactory. The adsorption processes were described better by the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic models, respectively. Notably, upon CO₂ stimulation, the PCCF@Ag exhibited significantly enhanced adsorption capacity toward anionic dyes, following ultrafast adsorption rate, which made the PCCF@Ag could selectively adsorb anionic dyes from mixture because of greatly different adsorption rates between anionic dyes (adsorption equilibrium within 2 min) and cationic dyes (adsorption equilibrium over 12 h). Additionally, the PCCF@Ag could maintain over 91.0% of adsorption capacity even after ten cycles, indicating its outstanding reusability. Meanwhile, the as-obtained PCCF@Ag exhibited excellent antibacterial activity. Overall, the as-obtained PCCF@Ag could be considered as a promising dye scavenger for wastewater remediation.

Enzymatic hydrolysis lignin functionalized Ti3C2Tx nanosheets for effective removal of MB and Cu2+ ions

Functionalized two-dimensional Ti₃C₂T_x (TN-EHL) was prepared as an effective adsorbent for removal of methylene blue dye (MB) and copper ions (Cu²⁺). Enzymatic hydrolysis lignin (EHL), a reproducible natural resource, was used to functionalize the Ti₃C₂T_x nanosheets. EHL can not only introduce active functional groups into TN-EHL but also prevent the oxidation of Ti₃C₂T_x, thus promoting the adsorption performance of TN-EHL. The maximum adsorption capacities of TN-EHL50 (in which the EHL content is 50 wt%) for MB and Cu²⁺ were 293.7 mg g^-1 and 49.96 mg g^-1, respectively. The higher correlation coefficients (R²) of MB (0.9996) and Cu²⁺ (0.9995) indicating that their adsorption processes can be described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The MB adsorption data fit the Freundlich isotherm with R² of 0.9953, whereas the Cu²⁺ ions adsorption data fit the Langmuir isotherm with R² of 0.9998. The thermodynamic analysis indicates that the adsorption process of MB and Cu²⁺ on TN-EHL50 is spontaneous and endothermic. Significantly, the Cu²⁺ ions were reduced to Cu₂O and CuO particles during the adsorption process. Therefore, TN-EHL has a great potential as an environmentally friendly adsorbent for MB removal and recovery of Cu²⁺ ions from wastewater.

Acid red 18 removal from aqueous solution by nanocrystalline granular ferric hydroxide (GFH); optimization by response surface methodology & genetic-algorithm

The need for fresh water is more than before by population growth, and industrial development have affected the quality of water supplies, one of the important reason for water contamination is synthetic dyes and their extensive use in industries. Adsorption has been considered as a common methods for dye removal from waters. In this study, Acid Red18 removal in batch mode by using Granular Ferric Hydroxide (GFH) was investigated. The GFH characterized by XRD, FESEM and FTIR analysis. Experiments were designed using RSM-CCD method. The maximum removal efficiency was obtained 78.59% at pH = 5, GFH dosage = 2 g/l, AR18 concentration = 77.5 mg/l and 85 min of contact time. Optimization with RSM and Genetic Algorithm carried out and is similar together. The non-linear adsorption Isotherm and kinetic fitted with Freundlich (R2 = 0.978) and pseudo-second-order (R2 = 0.989) models, respectively. Thermodynamic studies showed that the AR18 adsorption is endothermic process and GFH nature was found spontaneous.
