Anionic dependency of electronic and nonlinear optical properties of ionic liquids

Electronic, optical and spectroscopic properties of N-dialkyl-imidazolium hexafluorophosphate (CNMIM.PF6) ionic liquid crystal molecules investigated by computational methods

In this present work, we calculate the electronic, spectroscopic and nonlinear optical properties (NLO) of N-dialkyl-imidazolium hexafluorophosphate (CNMIM.PF6, where N = 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20) ionic liquid crystal molecules under the effect of alkyl chain length variation in cation moiety [CNMIM]+ with fixed anion [PF6]-. CONTEXT: The majority of research on ionic liquid crystal to date has been focused on experiments, while theoretical studies on the optical properties of ionic liquid crystal have been extremely rare. Nonlinear phenomena in optical devices have attracted many researchers. Therefore, results of NLO properties may favor facile synthesis and fabrication of novel-type of materials as well as optoelectronic devices. Spectroscopic studies elucidate further insight into ionic liquid crystal behavior. The results demonstrate that variations in alkyl chain length have an impact on the conformers' electrical, spectroscopic, and NLO properties as well as their stability. The stability of ionic liquid crystal molecules increases with increase in the alkyl chain length and the energy band gap range is 6.64-6.29 eV. Understanding ionic liquid crystal's physical behavior requires an understanding of their dipole moments and NLO features, which are covered in this article. The results of NLO characteristics for all ionic liquid crystal molecules show that their first-order hyperpolarizabilities are higher than the reference molecule (urea). METHODS: The electronic (molecular energy band gap, electrostatic potential map, as well as HOMO-LUMO orbitals) and spectroscopic (IR-RAMAN, UV) properties were evaluated with the help of theoretical model at B3LYP/6-31G(d) while the NLO study has been performed using B3LYP and M06-2X with different basis sets 6-31G(d) and 6-311++G(d,p), as implemented in Gaussian09 software.

Synthesis, spectroscopic, topological, hirshfeld surface analysis, and anti-covid-19 molecular docking investigation of isopropyl 1-benzoyl-4-(benzoyloxy)-2,6-diphenyl-1,2,5,6-tetrahydropyridine-3-carboxylate

Isopropyl 1-benzoyl-4-(benzoyloxy)-2,6-diphenyl-1,2,5,6-tetrahydropyridine-3-carboxylate (IDPC) was synthesized and characterized via spectroscopic (FT-IR and NMR) techniques. Hirshfeld surface and topological analyses were conducted to study structural and molecular properties. The energy gap (E_g), frontier orbital energies (E_HOMO, E_LUMO) and reactivity parameters (like chemical hardness and global hardness) were calculated using density functional theory with B3LYP/6–311++G (d,p) level of theory. Molecular docking of IDPC at the active sites of SARS-COVID receptors was investigated. IDPC molecule crystallized in the centrosymmetric triclinic (P1¯) space group. The topological and Hirshfeld surface analysis revealed that covalent, non-covalent and intermolecular H-bonding interactions, and electron delocalization exist in the molecular framework. Higher binding score (-6.966 kcal/mol) of IDPC at the active site of SARS-COVID main protease compared to other proteases suggests that IDPC has the potential of blocking polyprotein maturation. H-bonding and π-cationic and interactions of the phenyl ring and carbonyl oxygen of the ligand indicate the effective inhibiting potential of the compound against the virus.

Cation-anion interaction effect on the nonlinear optical behavior of pyridinium-based ionic liquids

Influence of the cation-anion interaction (expressed as internal hydrogen bonds) on the nonlinear optical properties (dipole moment, polarizability, anisotropy of polarizability and first-order hyperpolarizability) for the ionic liquids pyridinium hydrogen sulfate (PHS) and pyridinium bis(dihydrogen phosphate) (P2HP) was investigated in this paper. It was achieved analyzing vibrational modes (FT-IR) and electronic transitions (UV-vis) in PHS and P2HP. Molecular geometry of the title compounds was optimized by means of density functional theory calculations at B3LYP/6-311++G(2d,2p) level. Structural analysis exposed stronger internal hydrogen bonds (H⁷···O³ and H¹⁸···O⁴) between cationic and anionic fragments in the pyridinium hydrogen sulfate than these (H²⁶···O⁴ and H²⁵···O¹²) in pyridinium bis(dihydrogen phosphate). These observations are confirmed by FT-IR and UV-vis methods, where: (i) the infrared bands due to H···O and N-C interactions in P2HP appear at lower frequencies than the same ones in the spectrum of PHS and (ii) the n → π* electron transitions in PHS are more pronounced in comparison with these in P2HP. Based on the weaker cation-anion interaction in P2HP with respect to PHS, the former one is characterized with a remarkably higher first-order hyperpolarizability value. Hence, the ionic liquid P2HP was referred as a better nonlinear optical material than PHS.

Effect of the substituents of new coumarin-imidazo[1,2-a]heterocyclic-3-acrylate derivatives on nonlinear optical properties: a combined experimental-theoretical approach

A series of new coumarin-imidazo[1,2-a]heterocyclic-3-acrylate derivatives 7a-h were synthesized by the Heck reaction between the corresponding 3-(imidazo[1,2-a]pyrimidines)-(2-yl)-2H-chromen-2-ones 4a-e and methyl acrylate in 45-87% yields. The effect of the distinct substituents on third-order nonlinear optical properties was examined, experimentally measuring their nonlinear refractive indexes by the Z-scan technique. Density functional theory and time-dependent density functional theory were utilized with the B3LYP, CAM-B3LYP, PBE (PBEPBE), and M062X functionals on Gaussian09 software to calculate the vertical excitation, relaxation of the brightest excited states, conformation, HOMO-LUMO gaps, oscillator strength, polarizability, and hyperpolarizabilities of all derivatives. Although all acrylates showed a nonlinear response at a certain level of power, the compounds bearing a diethylamino electron-donating group exhibited higher nonlinear refractive index values (∼10^-9 cm² W^-1), which is in agreement with the trend in the computational calculations of the first and second hyperpolarization. According to the structural analysis, the electron-withdrawing group (acrylate) is mainly responsible for the loss of coplanarity because of increasing the dihedral angle between the coumarin and imidazo[1,2-a]heterocyclic moieties (to 39.1°). On the other hand, the unsubstituted compound 4a presented the greatest nonlinearity due to its almost coplanar structure (n₂ ∼ 10^-8 cm² W^-1), highlighting the importance of this feature.
