Molecular simulation studies of self-assembly for a chromonic perylene dye: All-atom studies and new approaches to coarse-graining

Computational predictions of interfacial tension, surface tension, and surfactant adsorption isotherms

All-atom (AA) molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are employed to predict interfacial tensions (IFT) and surface tensions (ST) of both ionic and non-ionic surfactants. The general AMBER force field (GAFF) and variants are examined in terms of their performance in predicting accurate IFT/ST, γ, values for chosen water models, together with the hydration free energy, ΔGhyd, and density, ρ, predictions for organic bulk phases. A strong correlation is observed between the quality of ρ and γ predictions. Based on the results, the GAFF-LIPID force field, which provides improved ρ predictions is selected for simulating surfactant tail groups. Good γ predictions are obtained with GAFF/GAFF-LIPID parameters and the TIP3P water model for IFT simulations at a water-triolein interface, and for GAFF/GAFF-LIPID parameters together with the OPC4 water model for ST simulations at a water-vacuum interface. Using a combined molecular dynamics-molecular thermodynamics theory (MD-MTT) framework, a mole fraction of C12E6 molecule of 1.477 × 10-6 (from the experimental critical micelle concentration, CMC) gives a simulated surface excess concentration, ΓMAX, of 76 C12E6 molecules at a 36 nm2 water-vacuum surface (3.5 × 10-10 mol cm-2), which corresponds to a simulated ST of 35 mN m-1. The results compare favourably with an experimental ΓMAX of C12E6 of 3.7 × 10-10 mol cm-2 (80 surfactants for a 36 nm2 surface) and experimental ST of C12E6 of 32 mN m-1 at the CMC.

Investigating anionic surfactant phase diagrams using dissipative particle dynamics: development of a transferable model

Dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) provides a powerful coarse-grained simulation technique for the study of a wide range of soft matter systems. Here, we investigate the transferability of DPD models to the prediction of anionic surfactant phase diagrams, taking advantage of fast parameter sweeps to optimise the choice of DPD parameters for these systems. Parameters are developed which provide a good representation of the phase diagrams of SDS (sodium dodecyl sulfate) and three different isomeric forms of LAS (linear alkylbenzene sulfonates) across an extensive concentration range. A high degree of transferability is seen, with parameters readily transferable to other systems, such as AES (alkyl ether sulfates). Excellent agreement is obtained with experimentally measured quantities, such as the lamellar layer spacing. Isosurfaces are produced from the surfactant head group, from which the second moment M of the isosurface normal distribution is calculated for different phase structures. Lyotropic liquid crystalline phases are characterised by a combination of the eigenvalues of M, radial distribution functions, and visual inspections.

Semi-Empirical Calculation of Bodipy Aggregate Spectroscopic Properties through Direct Sampling of Configurational Ensembles

Efficient prediction of the aggregation-induced callback of organic chromophores for utilization in molecular sensorics is a desirable development goal in modern computational chemistry. Dye aggregates are complicated to study when utilizing conventional quantum chemistry approaches, since they are usually composed of too many atoms to be effectively analyzed, even with high-throughput parallel systems. Here, we present a successful attempt to develop a protocol to assess the spectroscopic changes happening in BODIPY dyes upon aggregation from the first principles utilizing extended tight-binding (XTB) and Zerner's intermediate neglect of differential overlap (ZINDO) Hamiltonians. The developed sampling technique for aggregate configurational space scanning was found to be sufficient to both reproduce peculiarities and justify experimental data on the spectroscopic behavior of chromophore aggregates. The sTDA, sTD-DFT (GFN2-XTB) and CIS (ZINDO) approaches were assessed, and then sources of errors and benefits were outlined. Importantly, our goal was to keep any of the mentioned calculations within a computational cost feasible for a single workstation, whereas scaling was possible at any point in time. Finally, several aggregate structures were investigated in the external field to try to achieve distributions similar to the ones observed in the electrostatic potential of the air-water interface to assess the borderlines of practical applicability of the suggested scheme.

Molecular Simulation Approaches to the Study of Thermotropic and Lyotropic Liquid Crystals

Over the last decade, the availability of computer time, together with new algorithms capable of exploiting parallel computer architectures, has opened up many possibilities in molecularly modelling liquid crystalline systems. This perspective article points to recent progress in modelling both thermotropic and lyotropic systems. For thermotropic nematics, the advent of improved molecular force fields can provide predictions for nematic clearing temperatures within a 10 K range. Such studies also provide valuable insights into the structure of more complex phases, where molecular organisation may be challenging to probe experimentally. Developments in coarse-grained models for thermotropics are discussed in the context of understanding the complex interplay of molecular packing, microphase separation and local interactions, and in developing methods for the calculation of material properties for thermotropics. We discuss progress towards the calculation of elastic constants, rotational viscosity coefficients, flexoelectric coefficients and helical twisting powers. The article also covers developments in modelling micelles, conventional lyotropic phases, lyotropic phase diagrams, and chromonic liquid crystals. For the latter, atomistic simulations have been particularly productive in clarifying the nature of the self-assembled aggregates in dilute solution. The development of effective coarse-grained models for chromonics is discussed in detail, including models that have demonstrated the formation of the chromonic N and M phases.

All-atom simulations of bent liquid crystal dimers: the twist-bend nematic phase and insights into conformational chirality

The liquid crystal dimer 1,7-bis-4-(4'-cyanobiphenyl)heptane (CB7CB) is known to exhibit a nematic-nematic phase transition, with the lower temperature phase identified as the twist-bend nematic (N_TB) phase. Despite the achiral nature of the mesogen, the N_TB phase demonstrates emergent chirality through the spontaneous formation of a helical structure. We present extensive molecular dynamics simulations of CB7CB using an all-atom force field. The N_TB phase is observed in this model and, upon heating, shows phase transitions into the nematic (N) and isotropic phases. The simulated N_TB phase returns a pitch of 8.35 nm and a conical tilt angle of 29°. Analysis of the bend angle between the mesogenic units reveals an average angle of 127°, which is invariant to the simulated phase. We have calculated distributions of the chirality order parameter, χ, for the ensemble of conformers in the N_TB and N phases. These distributions elucidate that CB7CB is statistically achiral but can adopt chiral conformers with no preference for a specific handedness. Furthermore, there is no change in the extent of conformational chirality between the N_TB and N phases. Using single-molecule stochastic dynamics simulations in the gas phase, we study the dimer series CBnCB (where n = 6, 7, 8 or 9) and CBX(CH₂)₅YCB (where X/Y = CH₂, O or S) in terms of the bend angle and conformational chirality. We confirm that the bent molecular shape determines the ability of a dimer to exhibit the N_TB phase rather than its potential to assume chiral conformers; as |χ|_max increases with the spacer length, but the even-membered dimers have a linear shape in contrast to the bent nature of dimers with spacers of odd parity. For CBX(CH₂)₅YCB, it is found that |χ|_max increases as the bend angle of the dimer decreases, while the flexibility of the dimers remains unchanged through the series.
