A Mechanistic Overview of the Current Status and Future Challenges of Aluminum Anode and Electrolyte in Aluminum-Air Batteries

Aluminum-air batteries (AABs) are regarded as attractive candidates for usage as an electric vehicle power source due to their high theoretical energy density (8100 Wh kg-1 ), which is considerably higher than that of lithium-ion batteries. However, AABs have several issues with commercial applications. In this review, we outline the difficulties and most recent developments in AABs technology, including electrolytes and aluminum anodes, as well as their mechanistic understanding. First, the impact of the Al anode and alloying on battery performance is discussed. Then we focus on the impact of electrolytes on battery performances. The possibility of enhancing electrochemical performances by adding inhibitors to electrolytes is also investigated. Additionally, the use of aqueous and non-aqueous electrolytes in AABs is also discussed. Finally, the challenges and potential future research areas for the advancement of AABs are suggested.

Li, Na, K, Mg, Zn, Al, and Ca Anode Interface Chemistries Developed by Solid-State Electrolytes

Solid-state batteries (SSBs) have received significant attention due to their high energy density, reversible cycle life, and safe operations relative to commercial Li-ion batteries using flammable liquid electrolytes. This review presents the fundamentals, structures, thermodynamics, chemistries, and electrochemical kinetics of desirable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) required to meet the practical requirements of reversible anodes. Theoretical and experimental insights for metal nucleation, deposition, and stripping for the reversible cycling of metal anodes are provided. Ion transport mechanisms and state-of-the-art solid-state electrolytes (SEs) are discussed for realizing high-performance cells. The interface challenges and strategies are also concerned with the integration of SEs, anodes, and cathodes for large-scale SSBs in terms of physical/chemical contacts, space-charge layer, interdiffusion, lattice-mismatch, dendritic growth, chemical reactivity of SEI, current collectors, and thermal instability. The recent innovations for anode interface chemistries developed by SEs are highlighted with monovalent (lithium (Li+ ), sodium (Na+ ), potassium (K+ )) and multivalent (magnesium (Mg2+ ), zinc (Zn2+ ), aluminum (Al3+ ), calcium (Ca2+ )) cation carriers (i.e., lithium-metal, lithium-sulfur, sodium-metal, potassium-ion, magnesium-ion, zinc-metal, aluminum-ion, and calcium-ion batteries) compared to those of liquid counterparts.

Effect of Indole-2-carboxylic Acid on the Self-Corrosion and Discharge Activity of Aluminum Alloy Anode in Alkaline Al-Air Battery

Al-air battery has been regarded as a promising new energy source. However, the self-corrosion of aluminum anode leads to a loss of battery capacity and a decrease in battery longevity, limiting its commercial applications. Herein, indole-2-carboxylic acid (ICA) has been added to 4 M NaOH as a corrosion inhibitor. Its impact on the self-corrosion of aluminum alloy and the enhancement of the functionality of Al-air batteries at various concentrations have been investigated. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) techniques have been used to examine the compositional and morphological alterations of aluminum alloy surfaces. Electrochemical and hydrogen evolution tests showed that indole-2-carboxylic acid is an efficient corrosion inhibitor in alkaline solutions, and its impact grows with concentration. Our findings demonstrated that when the inhibitor concentration is 0.07 M, the inhibition efficiency is 54.0%, the anode utilization rises from 40.2% to 79.9%, the capacity density increases from 1197.6 to 2380.9 mAh g^-1, and the energy density increases from 1469.9 to 2951.8 Wh kg^-1. In addition, theoretical calculations have been performed to support the experimental results.

Synthesis and Corrosion Inhibition Potential of Cerium/Tetraethylenepentamine Dithiocarbamate Complex on AA2024-T3 in 3.5% NaCl

In this work, a cerium/tetraethylenepentamine dithiocarbamate complex was synthesized and evaluated for the corrosion inhibition capability on an AA2024-T3 Al alloy in a 3.5% NaCl medium. The synthesized compounds were characterized via spectroscopic techniques. The corrosion inhibition behaviour of the complex was elucidated by electrochemical measurements and surface analysis techniques. Based on electrochemical test results, the corrosion inhibition efficiency of the complex increases with the immersion time of aluminium alloy in the test solution. The corrosion inhibition reaches 96.80% when the aluminium is immersed in a 3.5% NaCl solution containing a corrosion inhibitor for 120 h. The potentiodynamic polarization test results show that the complex acts as a mixed-type corrosion inhibitor and the passive range is widened. The surface analysis methods reveal that the corrosion inhibition ability of the complex originated from the formation of a protective layer on the Al surface. This film is created from the physisorption and chemisorption of cerium ions and organic parts simultaneously released from the complex molecules.
