Selective recovery of rhenium from the simulating leaching solutions of uranium ore by amino guanidine functionalized microcrystalline cellulose microsphere

Efficient removal of p-nitrophenol from water by imidazolium ionic liquids functionalized cellulose microsphere

Removing p-nitrophenol (PNP) from water resources is crucial due to its significant threat to the environment and human health. Herein, imidazolium ionic liquids with short/long alkyl chain ([C2VIm]Br and [C8VIm]Br) modified cellulose microspheres (MCC-[C2VIm]Br and MCC-[C8VIm]Br) were synthesized by radiation method. To examine the impact of adsorbent hydrophilicity on adsorption performance, batch and column experiments were conducted for PNP adsorption. The MCC-[C2VIm]Br and MCC-[C8VIm]Br, with an equivalent molar import amount of ionic liquids, exhibited maximum adsorption capacities of 190.84 mg/g and 191.20 mg/g for PNP, respectively, and the adsorption equilibrium was reached within 30 min. Both adsorbents displayed exceptional reusability. Integrating the findings from XPS and FTIR analyses, and AgNO3 identification, the suggested adsorption mechanism posited that the adsorbents engaged with PNP through ion exchange, hydrogen bonds and π-π stacking. Remarkably, the hydrophobic MCC-[C8VIm]Br exhibited superior selectivity for PNP than the hydrophilic MCC-[C2VIm]Br, while had little effect on adsorption capacity and rate. MCC-[C8VIm]Br-2 with high grafting yield increased the adsorption capacity to 327.87 mg/g. Moreover, MCC-[C8VIm]Br-2 demonstrated efficient PNP removal from various real water samples, and column experiments illustrated its selective capture of PNP from groundwater. The promising adsorption performance indicates that MCC-[C8VIm]Br-2 holds potential for PNP removal from wastewater.

Effectively adsorb Au(S2O3)23- using aminoguanidine as trapping group from thiosulfate solutions

Thiosulfate gold leaching is one of the most promising green cyanide-free gold extraction processes; however, the difficulty of recovering Au(I) from the leaching system hinders its further development. This study prepared aminoguanidine-functionalized microspheres (AGMs) via a one-step reaction involving nucleophilic substitution between aminoguanidine hydrochloride and chloromethylated polystyrene microspheres and used AGMs to adsorb Au(I) from thiosulfate solutions. Scanning electron microscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used to analyze the structure and properties of AGMs. Experiments were designed to investigate the effects of pH, temperature, initial Au(I), and thiosulfate concentrations on the gold adsorption performance of AGMs. Results demonstrated that AGMs can efficiently adsorb Au(I) from thiosulfate solutions in a wide pH range. The adsorption process conforms to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm model, with a maximum capacity of 22.03 kg/t. Acidic thiourea is an effective desorbent, and after four adsorption-desorption cycles, the adsorption rate of Au(I) by AGMs is 78.63%, which shows AGMs have good cyclic application potential. Based on the results of characterization, experiments, and density functional theory calculations, the mechanism for the adsorption of [Au(S2O3)2]3- on AGMs involves anion exchange. Importantly, AGMs exhibited satisfactory adsorption property for Au(I) in practical Cu2+-NH3(en)-S2O32- systems. This study provided experimental reference for the recovery of Au(I) from thiosulfate solution.

Adsorbents for the Uranium Capture from Seawater for a Clean Energy Source and Environmental Safety: A Review

On the global level, uranium is considered the main nuclear energy source, and its removal from terrestrial ores is enough to last until the end of the current century. Therefore, a major focus is attracted toward the capture of uranium from a sustainable source (seawater). Uranium recovery from seawater has been reported over the last few decades, and recently many efforts have been devoted to the preparation of such adsorbents with higher selectivity and adsorption capacity. The purpose of this review is to report the advancement in adsorbent preparation and modification of porous materials. It also discusses challenges such as adsorbent selectivity, low uranium concentration in seawater, contact time, biofouling, and the solution to the problems necessary to ensure a better adsorption performance of the adsorbent.

Selective recovery of Re(VII) by nucleobases functionalized cellulose microspheres from the simulated uranium ore leaching solution

From a practical standpoint, it is still challenging to develop adsorbents with high adsorption capacity and outstanding selectivity for rhenium in uranium ore leaching solution. In this study, in order to explore the structure-property relationship, four nucleobases (Adenine, Guanine, Hypoxanthine and Xanthine) were used as functionalization reagents to modify cellulose (MCC-g-GMA-A, MCC-g-GMA-G, MCC-g-GMA-H and MCC-g-GMA-X) via radiation method. The effect of the type of nucleobases on the adsorption performance was evaluated by batch and dynamic experiments. The order of maximum adsorption capacity was MCC-g-GMA-A (194.0 mg g-1) > MCC-g-GMA-G (123.4 mg g-1) > MCC-g-GMA-H (45.59 mg g-1) > MCC-g-GMA-X (23.43 mg g-1), which was associated with the category of nitrogen-functional groups. Different nitrogen-containing functional groups have different degrees of protonation, which leads to differences in the interaction of the adsorbent with Re(VII). Notably, the adsorbents were able to selectively capture trace Re(VII) from the simulated uranium ore leaching solution. The FT-IR, XPS analyses, DFT theoretical calculations exhibited that the adsorption mechanism of nucleobases functionalized cellulose microspheres and Re(VII) was electrostatic interaction. MCC-g-GMA-A and MCC-g-GMA-G exhibited excellent selectivity towards Re(VII), which are potential adsorbents for Re(VII) recovery in uranium ore leaching solutions.

Preparation of biochar@chitosan-polyethyleneimine for the efficient removal of uranium from water environment

A novel chitosan-based composite with rich active sites was synthesized by uniformly dispersing biochar into the cross-linked network structure formed by chitosan and polyethyleneimine. Due to the synergistic effect of biochar (minerals) and chitosan-polyethyleneimine interpenetrating network (amino and hydroxyl), the chitosan-based composite possessed an excellent adsorption performance for uranium(VI). It could rapidly (<60 min) achieve a high adsorption efficiency (96.7 %) for uranium(VI) from water and a high static saturated adsorption capacity (633.4 mg/g), which was far superior to other chitosan-based adsorbents. Moreover, the separation for uranium(VI) on the chitosan-based composite was suitable for a variety of actual water environments and the adsorption efficiencies all exceeded 70 % in different water bodies. The soluble uranium(VI) could be completely removed by the chitosan-based composite in the continuous adsorption process, which could meet the permissible limits of the World Health Organization. In sum, the novel chitosan-based composite could overcome the bottleneck of current chitosan-based adsorption materials and become a potential adsorbent for the remediation of actual uranium(VI) contaminated wastewater.
