Ag, Au, Pt, and Au-Pt nanoclusters in [N1114][C1SO3] ionic liquid: A molecular dynamics study

How Domain Segregation in Ionic Liquids Stabilizes Nanoparticles and Establishes Long-Range Ordering─A Computational Study

Due to their physical properties including high thermal stability, very low vapor pressure, and high microwave absorption, ionic liquids have attracted great attention as solvents for the synthesis of nanomaterials, being considered as greener alternatives to traditional solvents. While usual solvents often need additives like surfactants, polymers, or other ligands to avoid nanoparticle coalescence, some ionic liquids can stabilize nanoparticles in dispersion without any additive. In order to quantify how the ionic liquids can affect both the aggregation thermodynamics and kinetics, molecular dynamics simulations were performed to simulate the evolution of concentrated dispersions and to compute the potential of mean force between nanoparticles of both hydrophilic and hydrophobic natures in two imidazolium-based ionic liquids, which differ from each other by the length of the cation alkyl group. Depending on the nature of the nanoparticle, structured layers of the polar and apolar regions of the ionic liquid can be formed close to its surface, and those layers lead to activation barriers for dispersed particles to get in contact. If the alkyl group of the ionic liquid is long enough to lead to domain segregation between the ionic and apolar portions of the solvent, the layered structure around the particle becomes more structured and propagates several nanometers away from its surface. This leads to stronger barriers close to the contact and also multiple barriers at larger distances that result from the unfavorable superposition of solvent layers of opposing nature when the nanoparticles approach each other. Those long-range solvent-mediated forces not only provide kinetic stability to dispersions but also affect their dynamics and lead to a long-range ordering between dispersed particles that can be explored as a template for the synthesis of complex materials.

Exceptional stability of ultrasmall cubic copper metal nanoclusters - a molecular dynamics study

The fabrication of shape-selective coinage metal nanoclusters (MNCs) has promising applications due to their exceptional physical and chemical molecule-like properties. However, the stability of the specific geometry of the nanoclusters, such as their cubic shapes, is unclear and has been unraveled by assessing the nanoclusters' interactions with different environments. In this work, we investigate the morphological stability of cubic structured, coinage metal nanoclusters of varying sizes ranging from 14 to 1099 atoms. The impact of solvent environments like water and the presence of ionic liquids (IL) on the stabilization of the MNCs were assessed using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. In general, smaller MNCs composed of less than 256 atoms encountered structural distortion easily compared to the larger ones, which preserved their cubic morphology with minimal surface aberrations in water. However, in the presence of 4M 1-butyl-1,1,1-trimethyl ammonium methane sulfonate [N1114][C1SO3] IL solution, the overall cubic shape of the MNCs was successfully preserved. Strikingly, it is observed that in contrast to the noble MNCs like Au and Ag, the cubic morphology for Cu MNCs with sizes less than 256 atoms exhibited significant stability even in the absence of IL.

Investigation of small inhibitor effects on methane hydrate formation in a carbon nanotube using molecular dynamics simulation

In this work, we simulated water molecules in fixed and rigid (15,0) CNTs and the confined water molecules formed a hexagonal ice nanotube in the CNT. After the addition of methane molecules in the nanotube, the hexagonal structure of confined water molecules disappeared and were replaced by almost all the guest methane molecules. The replaced molecules formed a row of water molecules in the middle of the hollow space of the CNT. We also added five small inhibitors with different concentrations (0.8 mol% and 3.8 mol%) to methane clathrates in CNT: benzene, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ionic liquid ([emim⁺][Cl^-] IL), methanol, NaCl, and tetrahydrofuran (THF). We investigated the thermodynamic and kinetic inhibition behaviors of the different inhibitors on the methane clathrate formation in the CNT using the radial distribution function (RDF), hydrogen bonding (HB), and angle distribution function (ADF). Our results showed that the [emim⁺][Cl^-] IL is the best inhibitor from both aspects. It was also shown that the effect of THF and benzene is better than that of NaCl and methanol. Furthermore, our results showed that the THF inhibitors tended to aggregate in the CNT, but the benzene and IL molecules were distributed along the CNT and can affect the inhibitor behavior of THF in the CNT. We have also examined the effect of CNT chirality using the armchair (9,9) CNT, the effect of CNT size using the (17,0) CNT, and the effect of CNT flexibility using the (15,0) CNT by the DREIDING force field. Our results showed that the IL has stronger thermodynamic and kinetic inhibition effects in the armchair (9,9) and the flexible (15,0) CNT than the other systems, respectively.

Simultaneous electro-generation/polymerization of Cu nanocluster embedded conductive poly(2,2':5',2''-terthiophene) films at micro and macro liquid/liquid interfaces

Cu nanoparticles (NPs) have been shown to be excellent electrocatalysts, particularly for CO₂ reduction - a critical reaction for sequestering anthropogenic, atmospheric carbon. Herein, the micro interface between two immiscible electrolyte solutions (ITIES) is exploited for the simultaneous electropolymerization of 2,2':5',2''-terthiophene (TT) and reduction of Cu²⁺ to Cu nanoparticles (NPs) generating a flexible electrocatalytic composite electrode material. TT acts as an electron donor in 1,2-dichloroethane (DCE) through heterogeneous electron transfer across the water|DCE (w|DCE) interface to CuSO₄ dissolved in water. The nanocomposite formation process was probed using cyclic voltammetry as well as electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). CV and EIS data show that the film forms quickly; however, the interfacial reaction is not spontaneous and does not proceed without an applied potential. At high [TT] the heterogeneous electron transfer wave was recorded voltammetrically but not at low [TT]. However, probing the edge of the polarizable potential window was found to be sufficient to initiate electrogeneration/electropolymerization. SEM and TEM were used to image and analyze the final Cu NP/poly-TT composites and it was discovered that there is a concomitant decrease in NP size with increasing [TT]. Preliminary electrocatalysis results at a nanocomposite modified large glassy carbon electrode saw a > 2 × increase in CO₂ reduction currents versus an unmodified electrode. These data suggest that this strategy is a promising means of generating electrocatalytic materials for carbon capture. However, films electrosynthesized at a micro and ~ 1 mm ITIES demonstrated poor reusability.

Electrodeless Synthesis of Low Dispersity Au Nanoparticles and Nanoclusters at an Immiscible Micro Water/Ionic Liquid Interface

Owing to their biocompatibility, optical, and catalytic properties, Au nanoparticles (NPs) have been the subject of much research. Since smaller NPs have enhanced catalytic properties and NP morphology greatly impacts their effectiveness, controlled and reproducible methods of generating Au NPs are still being sought. Herein, Au NPs were electrochemically generated at a water|ionic liquid (w|IL) immiscible micro-interface, 25 µm in diameter, using a redox active IL and compared to results at a water|oil (w|o) one. The liquid|liquid interface is advantageous as it is pristine and highly reproducible, as well as an excellent means of species and charge separation. In this system, KAuCl4 dissolved in the aqueous phase reacts under external potential control at the water|P8888TB (tetraoctylphosphonium tetrakis(pentafluorophenyl)borate) with trioctyl(ferrocenylhexanoyl)phosphonium tetrakis(pentafluorophenyl)borate (FcIL), an electron donor and redox active IL. FcIL was prepared with a common anion to P8888TB, which greatly enhances its solubility in the bulk IL. Simple ion transfer of AuCl4− and AuCl(4−γ)(OH)γ− at the w|P8888TB micro-interface were characterized voltammetrically as well as their heterogeneous electron transfer reaction with FcIL. This interfacial reaction generates Au NPs whose size can be thermodynamically controlled by modifying the pH of the aqueous phase. Critically, at low pH, nanoclusters, <1.7 nm in diameter, were generated owing to inhibited thermodynamics in combination with the supramolecular fluidic nature of the IL microenvironment that was observed surrounding the as-prepared NPs.
