Abstract
The vibrational signatures and ultrafast dynamics of the intramolecular H-bond in a series of β-diketones are investigated with 2D IR spectroscopy and computational modeling. The chosen β-diketones exhibit a range of H atom donor-acceptor distances and asymmetry along the H atom transfer coordinate that tunes the intramolecular H-bond strength. The species with the strongest H-bonds are calculated to have very soft H atom potentials, resulting in highly red-shifted OH stretch fundamental frequencies and dislocation of the H atom upon vibrational excitation. These soft potentials lead to significant coupling to the other normal mode coordinates and give rise to the very broad vibrational signatures observed experimentally. The 2D IR spectra in both the OH and OD stretch regions of the light and deuterated isotopologues reveal broadened and long-lived ground-state bleach signatures of the vibrationally hot molecules. Polarization-sensitive transient absorption measurements in the OH and OD stretch regions reveal notable isotopic differences in orientational dynamics. Orientational relaxation was measured to occur on ∼600 fs and ∼2 ps time scales for the light and deuterated isotopologues, respectively. The orientational dynamics are interpreted in terms of activated H/D atom transfer events driven by collective intramolecular structural rearrangements.

Abstract
Rapid measurements of vibrational linear dichroism (VLD) infrared spectra are shown to be possible by using stretched polymer films and an extension of existing instrumentation designed for vibrational circular dichroism spectroscopy. Earlier techniques can be extended using additional inexpensive polymer substrates to record good-quality VLD spectra of a significantly wider range of compounds with comparatively short sample-preparation times. The polymer substrates used, polyethylene and polytetrafluoroethylene, are commonly available and inexpensive, and samples are more easily prepared than that for many earlier stretched-film and crystal studies. Data are presented for neutral hydrophobic organic molecules on hydrophobic films including acridine, anthracene, fluorene, and recently synthesized S-(4-((4-cyanophenyl)ethynyl)phenyl)ethanethioate. We extend the approach to polar or ionic species, including 2,2'-bipyridine, 1,10-phenanthroline, and sodium dodecyl sulfate, by oxidizing polyethylene films to change their wetting properties. The combination of new instrumentation and modified sample preparation methods is useful in basic spectroscopy for untangling and assigning complicated infrared spectra. Nevertheless, it is not a panacea as surface-adsorbed molecules are often not monodispersed, and higher analyte concentrations can lead to aggregation and resonance phenomena that have previously been observed for infrared spectra on surfaces. These effects can be assessed by varying the sample concentration. The focus of this paper is experimental, and detailed analysis of most of the spectra lies outside its scope, including some well-studied compounds such as acridine and anthracene that allow comparisons with earlier research.

Abstract
The vibrational NH stretching transitions in secondary amines with intramolecular NH···O hydrogen bonds were investigated by experimental and theoretical methods, considering a large number of compounds and covering a wide range of stretching wavenumbers. The assignment of the NH stretching transitions in the experimental IR spectra was, in several instances, supported by measurement of the corresponding ND wavenumbers and by correlation with the observed NH proton chemical shifts. The observed wavenumbers were correlated with theoretical wavenumbers predicted with B3LYP density functional theory, using the basis sets 6-311++G(d,p) and 6-31G(d) and considering the harmonic as well as the anharmonic VPT2 approximation. Excellent correlations were established between observed wavenumbers and calculated harmonic values. However, the correlations were non-linear, in contrast to the results of previous investigations of the corresponding OH···O systems. The anharmonic VPT2 wavenumbers were found to be linearly related to the corresponding harmonic values. The results provide correlation equations for the prediction of NH stretching bands on the basis of standard B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) and B3LYP/6-31G(d) harmonic analyses, with standard deviations close to 38 cm−1. This is significant because the full anharmonic VPT2 analysis tends to be impractical for large molecules, requiring orders of magnitude more computing time than the harmonic analysis.

Abstract
The harmonic vibrational frequencies of the cis-enol forms of some of β-diketones with different substitution in beta position, vis. H, CH3, and Ph ring, as the symmetric and asymmetric molecules, were calculated using density functional theory (DFT) at the B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) level of theory. The results of DFT calculations were used to obtain the potential energy distribution (PED) by VEDA software. The PED results compared with the Gauss View animation, as our reassignments, and the experimental IR shifts upon deuteration of hydrogen in the OH and CHα. According to our study, the PED contributions, Gauss View animation and observed shifts show similar results for most of the bands which are not coupled with the OH and/or CHα bending, such as asymmetric and symmetric CH3 stretching and in-plane deformations, CH3 rocking vibrations and 8a, 19b, 9a, 15, 18a, and 12 motions of the phenyl ring. The largest discrepancies were observed in the 1700-1000 cm-1 region, likely due to the coupling with the OH and CHα in-plane bending vibrations, such as νaC = C-C = Ο, νsC = C-C = Ο and δOH. Furthermore, the calculated PED contributions by VEDA software do not well define the vibrational contributions to those groups in the molecule that are directly involved in the intramolecular hydrogen bond and the observed failure of the VEDA procedure is possibly due to inappropriateness of the default options.

Abstract
For the purpose of this review, strong hydrogen bonds have been defined on the basis of experimental data, such as OH stretching wavenumbers, νOH, and OH chemical shifts, δOH (in the latter case, after correction for ring current effects). Limits for O-H···Y systems are taken as 2800 > νOH > 1800 cm-1, and 19 ppm > δOH > 15 ppm. Recent results as well as an account of theoretical advances are presented for a series of important classes of compounds such as β-diketone enols, β-thioxoketone enols, Mannich bases, proton sponges, quinoline N-oxides and diacid anions. The O···O distance has long been used as a parameter for hydrogen bond strength in O-H···O systems. On a broad scale, a correlation between OH stretching wavenumbers and O···O distances is observed, as demonstrated experimentally as well as theoretically, but for substituted β-diketone enols this correlation is relatively weak.
