Abstract
N-Acylhydrazones are a versatile class of organic compounds with a diversity of potential applications. In this study, two new structure-related 3,4,5-trimethoxybenzoyl-containing N-acylhydrazones were synthesized and fully characterized, both in solution and in the solid state. The compounds differ with respect to the carbonyl precursors, i.e., 3-substituted salicylaldehydes with either a methyl or a nitro group. Single crystals of both compounds were isolated from the respective mother liquors and, in both cases, XRD confirmed the obtention of the (E)-isomer, in an anti-conformation. Computational calculations (gas and water phases) were performed in order to confirm some of the structural and vibrational aspects of the compounds. An important intramolecular H bond involving the phenolic hydroxy group and the azomethine nitrogen was identified in the solid state and seems to be maintained in solution. Moreover, the presence of the electron-withdrawing nitro substituent makes this interaction stronger. However, the contact should probably not subsist for the nitro compound under physiological conditions since the presence of this substituent significantly affects the pKa of the phenol: an apparent value of 5.68 ± 0.02 was obtained. This also impacts the basicity of the azomethine nitrogen and, as a consequence, increases the hydrazone's susceptibility to hydrolysis. Nevertheless, both compounds are stable at physiological-like conditions, especially the methyl-derived one, which qualifies them for further toxicological and activity studies, such as those involving trivalent metal ions sequestering in the context of neurodegenerative diseases.

Abstract
In this paper is reported the selective colorimetric detection and quantification of carbidopa, an inhibitor of aromatic amino acid decarboxylase, in the co-presence of levodopa as dopamine precursor in pharmaceutical formulations for the treatment of Parkinson's disease. The method is based on the selective condensation reaction between the hydrazine group from carbidopa and the formyl functional group of vanillin, a natural flavoring agent, in acidified alcoholic solution. The yellow color development (λmax ~ 420 nm) due to the formation of 4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzaldazine (HMOB) was observed for carbidopa only, whereas levodopa, lacking the hydrazine group, did not color the solution, as expected. The calibration curves for two tablet formulations of levodopa in combination with carbidopa (4:1) were superimposable with levodopa/carbidopa (4:1), as well as carbidopa alone, in standard solution, i.e., the excipients and additives did not interfere with carbidopa determination, corresponding to a mean recovery about 105%. The linear dynamic range was between 5.00 and 50.0 mg L-1 with very good reproducibility within this range (CVav% about 3-4%) and very good sensitivity, with limits of quantification of about 1 mg L-1. The colorimetric method developed here is very simple, inexpensive, and effective for drug estimation and quality control of pharmaceutical formulations.

Abstract
A new Cu(II) complex is synthetized by the reaction of copper nitrate and a N-acylhydrazone ligand obtained from the condensation of o-vanillin and 2-thiophecarbohydrazide (H2L). The solid-state structure of [Cu(HL)(H2O)](NO3)·H2O, or CuHL for simplicity, was determined by X-ray diffraction. In the cationic complex, the copper center is in a nearly squared planar environment with the nitrate interacting as a counterion. CuHL was characterized by spectroscopic techniques, including solid-state FTIR, Raman, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and diffuse reflectance and solution UV-Vis electronic spectroscopy. Calculations based on the density functional theory (DFT) assisted the interpretation and assignment of the spectroscopic data. The complex does not show relevant antioxidant activity evaluated by the radical cation of 2,2′-azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) diammonium salt (ABTS) method, being even less active than the free ligand as a radical quencher. Cytotoxicity assays of CuHL against three human tumor cell lines, namely MG-63, A549 and HT-29, revealed an important enhancement of the effectiveness as compared with both the ligand and the free metal ion. Moreover, its cytotoxic effect was remarkably stronger than that of the reference metallodrug cisplatin in all cancer cell lines tested, a promissory result in the search for new metallodrugs of essential transition metals.

Abstract
The mechanochemical preparation of silver sulfadiazine and dantrolene, two marketed active pharmaceutical ingredients, was investigated by in situ Raman spectroscopy. For the first time, the mechanochemical transformations involving highly fluorescent compounds could be studied in situ with a high-resolution Raman system combined with a unique suitable Raman probe. Moreover, the kinetic features of the mechanochemical process were examined by a mathematical model allowing to describe the chemical changes under mechanical stress. This approach is promising both to broaden the scope of Raman in situ investigations that would otherwise be impossible and for process optimization at any scale.

Abstract
A series of transition metal complexes have been synthesized from biologically active curcumin and isoniazid Schiff base. They are characterized by various spectral techniques like UV-Vis, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and mass spectroscopies. Moreover, elemental analysis, magnetic susceptibility and molar conductivity measurements are also carried out. All these data evidence that the metal complexes acquire square planar except zinc(II) which adopts a tetrahedral geometry, and they are non-electrolytic in nature. Groove mode of binding between the calf thymus DNA (CT DNA) and metal complexes is confirmed by electronic absorption titration, viscosity and cyclic voltammetry studies. In addition to that, all the metal complexes are able to cleave pUC 19 DNA. Optimized geometry and ground-state electronic structure calculations of all the synthesized compounds are established out by density functional theory (DFT) using B3LYP method which theoretically reveals that copper(II) complex explores higher stability and higher biological accessibility. This is experimentally corroborated by antimicrobial studies. In silico Absorption, Distribution, Metabolism, Excretion (ADME) studies reveal the biological potential of all synthesized complexes, and also biological activity of the ligand is predicted by PASS online biological activity prediction software. Molecular docking studies are also carried out to confirm the groove mode of binding and receptor-complex interactions.

Abstract
Five Schiff bases obtained from condensation of 4-methoxybenzohydrazide with related aldehydes, namely o-vanillin, vanillin, 5-bromovanillin, 5-chlorosalicylaldehyde and 5-bromosalicylaldehyde were prepared. A detailed structural and spectroscopic study is reported. The crystal structures of four members of the family were determined and compared with one another. The hydrazones obtained from 5-chlorosalicylaldehyde and 5-bromosalicylaldehyde resulted to be isomorphic to each other. The solid-state structures are stabilized by intra-molecular O-H⋯N interactions in salicylaldehyde derivatives between the O-H moiety from the aldehyde and the hydrazone nitrogen atom. All crystals are further stabilized by inter-molecular H-bonds mediated by the crystallization water molecule. A comparative analysis between experimental and theoretical results is presented. The conformational space was searched and geometries were optimized both in gas phase and including solvent effects. The structure is predicted for the compound for which the crystal structure was not determined. Infrared and electronic spectra were measured and assigned with the help of data obtained from computational methods based on the Density Functional Theory.

A detailed structural and spectroscopic study of the disulfide Schiff base obtained from condensation of 2-aminothiophenol and o-vanillin is reported. It includes the analyses of the anhydrous and monohydrate forms of the title compound. Structures of both solids were resolved by X-ray diffraction methods. A comparison between experimental and theoretical results is presented. The conformational space was searched and geometries were optimized both in gas phase and including solvent effects. Vibrational (IR and Raman) and electronic spectra were measured and assigned with the help of computational methods based on the Density Functional Theory. Calculated MEP-derived atomic charges were calculated to predict coordination sites for metal complexes formation.

Abstract
A comprehensive structural and vibrational study of the potential metal-protein attenuating compound 8-hydroxyquinoline-2-carboxaldehyde isonicotinoyl hydrazone is reported. X-ray diffraction data, as well as FT-IR and Raman frequencies, were compared with the respective theoretical values obtained from DFT calculations. Theory agrees well with experiment. In this context, an attempt of total assignment concerning the FT-IR and Raman spectra of the title compound was performed, shedding new light on previous partial assignments published elsewhere.
