Abstract
Microorganisms attach to surfaces and interfaces and form biofilms which create a sheltered area for host cell response. Therefore, biofilms provide troubles in fields such as medicine, food, and pharmaceuticals. Inhibition of formation of biofilms through hindering of quorum sensing could be a method for the production of new generation antibiotics. In this study, four new benzimidazole type NHC precursors (1-allyl-3-benzyl-5,6-dimethylbenzimidazolium chloride, 1-allyl-3-(2,4,6-trimethylbenzyl)-5,6-dimethylbenzimidazolium chloride, 1-allyl-3-(2,3,5,6-tetramethylbenzyl)-5,6-dimethylbenzimidazolium chloride, and 1-allyl-3-(2,3,4,5,6-pentamethylbenzyl)-5,6-dimethylbenzimidazolium chloride and Ag-NHC complexes of these molecules were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, FT-IR spectroscopy, 1H, and 13C{1H} NMR spectroscopy, LC-MS, and single crystal crystallography. Antimicrobial and biofilm formation inhibition activities of the molecules were evaluated. In addition, the activities of the molecules were examined in detail by molecular docking analysis. According to the results obtained, higher activity was achieved with the complex molecules when compared with the benzimidazole derivative ligands.

Abstract
An atom-economic synthetic route to benzimidazolium salts is presented. The annulated polycyclic systems: 1,3-bis(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)-1H-benzo[d]imidazol-3-ium chloride (1-Cl), 1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-1H-benzo[d]imidazol-3-ium chloride (2-Cl), 1,3-diphenyl-1H-benzo[d]imidazol-3-ium chloride (3-Cl), and 1,3-di(pyridin-2-yl)-1H-benzo[d]imidazol-3-ium chloride (4-Cl) were prepared in a two-step synthesis avoiding chromatographic work-up. In the key step triethyl orthoformate is reacted with the corresponding N1,N2-diarylbenzene-1,2-diamines and then further transformed in situ, by alkoxy abstraction using trimethylsilyl chloride (TMSCl), and concomitant imidazole ring closure.

Abstract
Novel photocatalysts based on ruthenium complexes with NHC (N-heterocyclic carbene)-type bridging ligands have been prepared and structurally and photophysically characterised. The identity of the NHC-unit of the bridging ligand was established unambiguously by means of X-ray structural analysis of a heterodinuclear ruthenium-silver complex. The photophysical data indicate ultrafast intersystem crossing into an emissive and a non-emissive triplet excited state after excitation of the ruthenium centre. Exceptionally high luminescence quantum yields of up to 39% and long lifetimes of up to 2 μs are some of the triplet excited state characteristics. Preliminary studies into the visible light driven photocatalytic hydrogen formation show no induction phase and constant turnover frequencies that are independent on the concentration of the photocatalyst. In conclusion this supports the notion of a stable assembly under photocatalytic conditions.
