A combined experimental and computational study of 3-bromo-5-(2,5-difluorophenyl) pyridine and 3,5-bis(naphthalen-1-yl)pyridine: Insight into the synthesis, spectroscopic, single crystal XRD, electronic, nonlinear optical and biological properties

Influence of benzothiophene acceptor moieties on the non-linear optical properties of pyreno-based chromophores: first-principles DFT framework

Herein, a series of heterocyclic organic compounds (PYFD1-PYFD7) are designed with different acceptor moieties at the terminal position of a reference compound (PYFR) for nonlinear optical (NLO) active materials. The optoelectronic characteristics of the designed chromophores were investigated using density functional theory (DFT) calculations with the M06/6-311G(d,p) functional. Frontier molecular orbital (FMO) analysis revealed a significant decrease in the energy of the band gaps (2.340-2.602 eV) for the derivatives as compared to the PYFR reference compound (3.12 eV). An efficient transfer of charge from the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) to the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) was seen, which was further corroborated by the density of states (DOS) and transition density matrix (TDM) heat maps. The results of the global reactivity parameters (GRPs) indicated that all derivatives exhibited greater softness (σ = 0.384-0.427 eV) and lower hardness (η = 0.394-1.302 eV) as compared to PYFR, indicating a higher level of polarizability in the derivatives. Moreover, all of the derivatives showed significant findings in terms of nonlinear optical (NLO) results as compared to the reference chromophore. PYFD2 showed the most effective NLO response (α = 1.861 × 10-22 and βtot = 2.376 × 10-28 esu), including a lowered band gap of 2.340 eV, the maximum softness value of 0.4273 eV, and the lowest hardness value of 1.170 eV as compared to other chromophores. The incorporation of different acceptors and thiophene as a π-spacer in this structural alteration significantly contributed to achieving remarkable NLO responses. Therefore, our findings may motivate experimentalists to synthesize these designed NLO active materials for the current advanced technological applications.

Visible light assisted photooxidative facile degradation of azo dyes in water using a green method

In this study, the methyl orange (MO) dye has been degraded after screening several azo dyes due to its effective results and being toxic and carcinogenic to aquatic life and humans. An environmentally friendly, economical, and green method for water purification was used in this study using the photooxidative method. Several organic acids were screened for oxidative applications against various azo dyes but due to better results, methyl orange was selected for the whole study. Ascorbic acid, also known as vitamin C, was found to be best for photodegradation due to its high oxidative activity among various organic acids utilized. A newly developed photoreactor box has been used to conduct the photooxidation process. To evaluate the degradation efficiency of AsA, photooxidative activity was monitored periodically. When the dose of AsA was used at a contact time of 180 minutes, degradation efficiency was 96%. The analysis of degraded products was performed using HPLC and GC-MS. The nucleophilicity of HOMO-LUMO and MEPs was confirmed using density functional theory. For the optimization of the process, central composite design (CCD) in Response Surface Methodology (RSM) was utilized.

Novel isatin-triazole based thiosemicarbazones as potential anticancer agents: synthesis, DFT and molecular docking studies

Thiosemicarbazones of isatin have been found to exhibit versatile bioactivities. In this study, two distinct types of isatin-triazole hybrids 3a and 3b were accessed via copper-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition reaction (CuAAC), together with their mono and bis-thiosemicarbazone derivatives 4a-h and 5a-h. In addition to the characterization by physical, spectral and analytical data, a DFT study was carried out to obtain the optimized geometries of all thiosemicarbazones. The global reactivity values showed that among the synthesized derivatives, 4c, 4g and 5c having nitro substituents are the most soft compounds, with compound 5c having the highest electronegativity and electrophilicity index values among the synthesized series, thus possessing strong binding ability with biomolecules. Molecular docking studies were performed to explore the inhibitory ability of the selected compounds against the active sites of the anticancer protein of phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K). Among the synthesized derivatives, 4-nitro substituted bisthiosemicarbazone 5c showed the highest binding energy of -10.3 kcal mol-1. These findings demonstrated that compound 5c could be used as a favored anticancer scaffold via the mechanism of inhibition against the PI3K signaling pathways.

Heterocyclic Donor Moiety Effect on Optical Nonlinearity Behavior of Chrysene-Based Chromophores with Push-Pull Configuration via the Quantum Chemical Approach

Organic-based nonlinear optical (NLO) materials may be used in many optical-electronic systems and other next-generation defense technologies. With the importance of NLO materials, a series of push-pull architecture (D-π-A) derivatives (DTMD2-DTMD6) were devised from DTMR1 through structural alteration of different efficient donor heterocyclic groups. Density functional theory-based computations were executed at the MPW1PW91/6-31G(d,p) level to explore the NLO behavior of the derivatives. To investigate the optoelectronic behavior of the said compounds, various analyses like the frontier molecular orbital (FMO), global reactivity parameters, density of state (DOS), absorption spectra (UV-vis), natural bond orbital, and transition density matrix (TDM) were performed. The derivatives have a smaller band gap (2.156-1.492 eV) and a larger bathochromic shift (λmax = 692.838-969.605 nm) as compared to the reference chromophore (ΔE = 2.306 eV and λmax = 677.949 nm). FMO analysis revealed substantial charge conduction out of the donor toward the acceptor via a spacer that was also shown by TDM and DOS analyses. All derivatives showed promising NLO results, with the maximum amplitude of linear polarizability ⟨α⟩ and first (βtotal) and second (γtotal) hyperpolarizabilities over their reference chromophore. DTMD2 contained the highest βtotal (7.220 × 10-27 esu) and γtotal (1.720 × 10-31 esu) values corresponding with the reduced band gap (1.492 eV), representing potential futures for a large NLO amplitude. This structural modification through the use of various donors has played a significant part in achieving promising NLO behavior in the modified compounds.

Recent advances in the synthesis and utility of thiazoline and its derivatives

Thiazolines and their derivatives hold significant importance in the field of medicinal chemistry due to their promising potential as pharmaceutical agents. These molecular entities serve as critical scaffolds within numerous natural products, including curacin A, thiangazole, and mirabazole, and play a vital role in a wide array of physiological reactions. Their pharmacological versatility encompasses anti-HIV, neurological, anti-cancer, and antibiotic activities. Over the course of recent decades, researchers have extensively explored and developed analogs of these compounds, uncovering compelling therapeutic properties such as antioxidant, anti-tumor, anti-microbial, and anti-inflammatory effects. Consequently, thiazoline-based compounds have emerged as noteworthy targets for synthetic endeavors. In this review, we provide a comprehensive summary of recent advancements in the synthesis of thiazolines and thiazoline-based derivatives, along with an exploration of their diverse potential applications across various scientific domains.

Experimental and Computational studies on Intramolecular charge transfer, Terahertz and Two photon absorption of 3-[(4-Nitrophenyl Azo)]-9H-Carbazole-9-Ethanol (NPACE) from their Vibrational spectra for Optical limiting and NLO applications

Non-linear optical (NLO) features of 3-[(4-Nitrophenyl Azo)]-9H-Carbazole-9-Ethanol (NPACE) chromophore were investigated by FT-IR, FT-Raman, and UV-visible spectra aided by Density Functional Theory (DFT) using the B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) basis set of Gaussian 16 W package. It is observed from the DFT calculation that the slight increase in the endocyclic angle of C13 -C14 -C15 and the reduction in exocyclic angle of N40 -N39 -C14 and C15 -C14 -N39 ascertained by experimental XRD values indicating the intramolecular charge-transfer interaction between the carbazole and nitrophenyl group through the diazo bridge. The vibrational contribution to the linear electro-optic effect is 15% of the total hyperpolarizability being calculated at B3LYP/6-311++G (d, p) for the NPACE molecule. It is also observed that the 8a, 19a, and 19b modes of the carbazole ring and the 8a, 8b, and 19b modes of the phenyl ring are found to be simultaneously and intensely active in IR and Raman spectra explaining the charge transfer interactions throughout the molecule. The low value of the HOMO- LUMO energy gap (2.5843 eV) and the deviation between the measured absorption wavelength (3.36 eV) from the computed (3.87 eV), both these facts substantiate the intramolecular charge transfer. The polarizability and first-order hyperpolarizability were calculated as 6.48 × 10-24 and 3.8 × 10-29 esu, respectively. The second harmonic generation (SHG) measurement experiment of NPACE was carried out using the powder method. The SHG efficiency is measured in comparison with the urea standard. The calculated torsional mode at 20 cm-1 is in excellent quantitative agreement with the experimentally determined terahertz absorption peak. The two-photon absorption coefficient of NPACE was estimated to be 0.9 × 10-11 mW-1, which is mainly due to the D-π-A type of molecular structure, and the optical limiting threshold for NPACE was estimated to be 1.52 × 1013 Wm-2 enabling this material as a potential candidate for optical limiting applications.

Synthesis, characterization, DNA binding interactions, DFT calculations, and Covid-19 molecular docking of novel bioactive copper(I) complexes developed via unexpected reduction of azo-hydrazo ligands

In this work, we focused on the 3rd goal of the sustainable development plan: achieving good health and supporting well-being. Two redox-active hydrazo ligands namely, phenylcarbonohydrazonoyldicyanide (PCHD) and pyridin-4-ylcarbonohydrazonoyl-dicyanide (PyCHD), and their copper(I) complexes have been synthesized and characterized. The analytical data indicates the formation of copper(I) complexes despite starting with copper(II) perchlorate salt. The 1H-NMR and UV-visible spectral studies in DMSO revealed that PyCHD mainly exists in its azo-form, while PCHD exists in azo ↔ hydrazo equilibrium form, and confirmed the copper(I) oxidation state. XPS, spectral and electrochemistry data indicated the existence of copper(I) valence of both complexes. Cyclic voltammetry of PCHD and its copper(I) complex supported the reduction power of the ligand. The antimicrobial activity, cytotoxicity against the mammalian breast carcinoma cell line (MCF7), and DNA interaction of the compounds are investigated. All compounds showed high antimicrobial, and cytotoxic activities, relative to the standard drugs. Upon studying the wheat DNA binding, PCHD and PyCHD were found to bind through external contacts, while both [Cu(PCHD)2]ClO4.H2O and [Cu(PyCHD)2]ClO4.H2O were intercalated binding. In-silico molecular docking simulations against Estrogen Receptor Alpha Ligand Binding Domain (ID: 6CBZ) were performed on all produced compounds and confirmed the invitro experimentally best anticancer activity of [Cu(PyCHD)2]ClO4.H2O. The molecular docking tests against SARS-CoV-2 main protease (ID: 6 WTT) showed promising activity in the order of total binding energy values: [Cu(PCHD)2]ClO4.H2O > [Cu(PyCHD)2]ClO4.H2O > PCHD > PyCHD.

Exploration of linear and third-order nonlinear optical properties for donor-π-linker-acceptor chromophores derived from ATT-2 based non-fullerene molecule

In the current study, seven non-fullerene compounds abbreviated as ATTD2-ATTD8 were designed through structural tailoring and their nonlinear optical (NLO) properties were reported. The objective of this study was to explore the potential for newly configured D-π-A type non-fullerene-based compounds. Quantum chemical methods were adopted and revealed the molecules as highly efficient materials with favorable NLO characteristics for use in optoelectronic devices. The M06 functional along with the 6-311G(d,p) basis set in chloroform solvent were utilized for the natural bonding orbital (NBO) analysis, absorption spectra and computational assessments of frontier molecular orbitals (FMOs), global reactivity descriptors (GRPs), transition density matrix (TDM) and nonlinear optical properties (NLO) for ATTR1 and ATTD2-ATTD8. The HOMO-LUMO energy gap was significantly reduced in all the designed moieties compared to the reference compound in the following decreasing order: ATTR1 > ATTD8 > ATTD4 > ATTD5 > ATTD2 > ATTD7 > ATTD6 > ATTD3. All of the designed molecules (ATTD2-ATTD8) showed good NLO response. Global reactivity parameters were found to be closely associated with the band gap between the HOMO and LUMO orbitals, and the compound with the smallest energy gap, ATTD3, exhibited a lower hardness value of 1.754 eV and higher softness value of 0.570 eV with outstanding NLO response. For the reference compound and ATTD2-ATTD8 derivatives, attributes like dipole moment (μtot), average polarizability 〈α〉, first hyperpolarizability (βtot), and second hyperpolarizability γtot were calculated. Out of all the derivatives, ATTD3 revealed the highest amplitude with a βtot of 8.23 × 10-27 esu, which was consistent with the reduced band gap (1.754 eV) and suggested it was the best possibility for NLO materials in the future.

Nature of Linear Spectral Properties and Fast Relaxations in the Excited States and Two-Photon Absorption Efficiency of 3-Thiazolyl and 3-Phenyltiazolyl Coumarin Derivatives

Coumarin-based fluorescent agents play an important role in the manifold fundamental scientific and technological areas and need to be carefully studied. In this research, linear photophysics, photochemistry, fast vibronic relaxations, and two-photon absorption (2PA) of the coumarin derivatives, methyl 4-[2-(7-methoxy-2-oxo-chromen-3-yl)thiazol-4-yl]butanoate (1) and methyl 4-[4-[2-(7-methoxy-2-oxo-chromen-3-yl)thiazol-4-yl]phenoxy]butanoate (2), were comprehensively analyzed using stationary and time-resolved spectroscopic techniques, along with quantum-chemical calculations. The steady-state one-photon absorption, fluorescence emission, and excitation anisotropy spectra, as well as 3D fluorescence maps of 3-hetarylcoumarins 1 and 2 were obtained at room temperature in solvents of different polarities. The nature of relatively large Stokes shifts (∼4000-6000 cm^-1), specific solvatochromic behavior, weak electronic π → π* transitions, and adherence to Kasha's rule were revealed. The photochemical stability of 1 and 2 was explored quantitatively, and values of photodecomposition quantum yields, on the order of ∼10^-4, were determined. A femtosecond transient absorption pump-probe technique was used for the investigation of fast vibronic relaxation and excited-state absorption processes in 1 and 2, while the possibility of efficient optical gain was shown for 1 in acetonitrile. The degenerate 2PA spectra of 1 and 2 were measured by an open aperture z-scan method, and the maximum 2PA cross-sections of ∼300 GM were obtained. The electronic nature of the hetaryl coumarins was analyzed by quantum-chemical calculations using DFT/TD-DFT level of theory and was found to be in good agreement with experimental data.

Synthesis, spectroscopic, SC-XRD/DFT and non-linear optical (NLO) properties of chromene derivatives

In the present study, we reported the efficient synthesis of novel, heterocyclic, coumarin-based pyrano-chromene derivatives, 2-amino-8-methyl-5-oxo-4-[2-(2-oxo-2H-chromen-3-ylmethoxy)-phenyl]-4H,5H-pyrano[3,2-c]chromene-3-carbonitrile (4a) and 2-amino-8-methyl-5-oxo-4-[2-(2-oxo-2H-chromen-3-ylmethoxy)-phenyl]-4H,5H-pyrano[3,2-c]chromene-3-carboxylic acid methyl ester (4b). The chemical structures of synthesized compounds were resolved by employing various spectroscopic techniques like UV-Vis, FT-IR, ¹H & ¹³C NMR, and single crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD) analysis. The compounds; 4a and 4b, with appealing π-bonded skeleton were further analyzed in terms of their electronic and structural aspects using an integral approach of density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TD/DFT). The methodology: M06-2X/6-31G(d,p) level of theory was applied to compare their experimental data with theoretical outcomes using quantum chemical analysis. The frontier molecular orbitals (FMOs) study revealed that, 4a possesses a low band gap (5.168 eV) as compared to 4b (6.308 eV). Global reactivity parameters were associated with E _gap values as 4a, with the lowest band gap showed the smaller value of hardness (0.094 eV) and a larger value of softness (5.266 eV). The non-linear optical (NLO) insight exhibited that, the average polarizability 〈α〉 and second hyperpolarizability (γ _tot) were observed in 4a as 6.77005 × 10^-23 and 0.145 × 10⁴ esu, respectively. Overall, the computational studies suggest that the investigated compounds have distinct NLO properties.

Synthesis, Characterization, and DFT-Based Electronic and Nonlinear Optical Properties of Methyl 1-(arylsulfonyl)-2-aryl-1H-benzo[d]imidazole-6-carboxylates

Herein, a series of N-1-sulfonyl substituted derivatives of 2-substituted benzimidazoles (2a-2e) were designed and synthesized via structural tailoring of the acceptor part of donor-π-acceptor schemes, and their nonlinear optic (NLO) characteristics were reported. The structures of 2a-2e were investigated and their characterization was accomplished by employing spectroscopic procedures, i.e., UV-vis, FT-IR, and ¹H and ¹³C NMR. Further, a density functional theory (DFT) approach was used to calculate UV-vis, vibrational, and ¹H and ¹³C NMR techniques; frontier molecular orbitals (FMOs); global reactivity parameters (GRPs); natural bond orbitals (NBOs); optical and vibrational analysis; and nonlinear optics (NLO). The most promising results were obtained for 6-nitro-2-(4-nitrophenyl)-1-(4-nitrophenylsulfonyl)-1H-benzo[d]imidazole among entitled compounds, as it exhibited the highest ⟨α⟩ and β_tot values, showing it is an eye-catching NLO material. This DFT study evokes the interest of researchers regarding the development of benzimidazole-based tempting NLO compounds that could be beneficial in modern hi-tech applications.

A Framework for Biosensors Assisted by Multiphoton Effects and Machine Learning

The ability to interpret information through automatic sensors is one of the most important pillars of modern technology. In particular, the potential of biosensors has been used to evaluate biological information of living organisms, and to detect danger or predict urgent situations in a battlefield, as in the invasion of SARS-CoV-2 in this era. This work is devoted to describing a panoramic overview of optical biosensors that can be improved by the assistance of nonlinear optics and machine learning methods. Optical biosensors have demonstrated their effectiveness in detecting a diverse range of viruses. Specifically, the SARS-CoV-2 virus has generated disturbance all over the world, and biosensors have emerged as a key for providing an analysis based on physical and chemical phenomena. In this perspective, we highlight how multiphoton interactions can be responsible for an enhancement in sensibility exhibited by biosensors. The nonlinear optical effects open up a series of options to expand the applications of optical biosensors. Nonlinearities together with computer tools are suitable for the identification of complex low-dimensional agents. Machine learning methods can approximate functions to reveal patterns in the detection of dynamic objects in the human body and determine viruses, harmful entities, or strange kinetics in cells.

Influence of End-Capped Modifications in the Nonlinear Optical Amplitude of Nonfullerene-Based Chromophores with a D-π-A Architecture: A DFT/TDDFT Study

Nonlinear optical (NLO) materials have several uses in many fields such as solid physics, biology, medicine, nuclear physics, and material research. Therefore, a series of nonfullerene-based derivatives (CC10D1-CC10D8) with a D-π-A configuration was planned for the NLO investigation using CC10R as the reference molecule with structural alternations at acceptor moieties. Natural bonding orbital (NBO), UV-vis spectra, frontier molecular orbitals (FMOs), global reactivity parameters (GRPs), transition density matrix (TDM), and density of states (DOS) were analyzed using the M06/6-311G(d,p) functional in chloroform solvent to understand the NLO responses of CC10R and CC10D1-CC10D8. The highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO)-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) band gaps of CC10D1-CC10D6 were illustrated to be lower than that of CC10R, with the larger bathochromic shift (726.408-782.674 nm) resulting in a significant NLO response. Along with the band gap, the FMO method also identified an efficient interfacial charge transfer from D to A moieties via a π-bridge, which was further supported by the DOS and TDM map. Moreover, NBO calculations demonstrated that extended hyperconjugation and strong internal molecular interactions were important in their stabilization. The dipole moment (μ), linear polarizability ⟨α⟩, hyperpolarizability (β_total), and second-order hyperpolarizability (γ_total.) were studied for CC10R and CC10D1-CC10D8. Among all of the derivatives, CC10D2 was proven to be the most appropriate candidate because of its suitable NLO behavior such as being well-supported by a reduced band gap (2.093 eV) and having a suitable maximum absorption wavelength (782.674 nm). Therefore, CC10D2 was reported to have a greater value of first hyperpolarizability (208 659.330 a.u.) compared with other derivatives and CC10R. For the second hyperpolarizability, a greater value was obtained for CC10R (5.855 × 10⁷ a.u.), and its derivatives showed results comparable to that of the parent chromophore for γ_total. This theoretical framework reveals that structural customization with different acceptor units plays a significant role in obtaining attractive NLO materials for optoelectronic applications.

Exploration of Nonlinear Optical Properties for the First Theoretical Framework of Non-Fullerene DTS(FBTTh2)2-Based Derivatives

Organic compounds having significant nonlinear optical (NLO) applications are being employed in the optoelectronics field. In the current work, a series of non-fullerene acceptor (NFA) based compounds are designed by modifying the acceptors with different substituents using DTS(FBTTh ₂ ) ₂ R1 as a reference compound. To study the NLO responses to the tuning of various acceptors, DFT and TD-DFT based parameters were calculated at the M06 level along with the 6-31G(d,p) basis set. The designed compounds (MSTD2-MSTD7) showed smaller values of the energy gap in comparison to the reference compound. The energy gaps of the title compounds were linked to global reactivity insights; MSTD7 provided a lower band gap, with smaller and larger quantities for hardness and softness characteristics, respectively. Further, UV-vis analyses were performed for all of the designed compounds, displaying wavelengths red-shifted from that of DTS(FBTTh ₂ ) ₂ R1 _. The intraelectron transfer (ICT) process and stability of the title compounds were explored via frontier molecular orbital (FMO) and natural bond orbital (NBO) studies, respectively. Out of all the designed compounds, the highest value of linear polarizability ⟨α⟩ of 3.485 × 10^-22 esu, first hyperpolarizability (β_total) of 13.44 × 10^-27 esu and second-order hyperpolarizability ⟨γ⟩ of 3.66 × 10^-31 esu were exhibited by MSTD7. In short, all of the designed compounds exhibited promising NLO properties because of their low charge transport resistance. These NLO properties may be useful for experimental researchers to uncover NLO materials for modern applications.

Influence of Peripheral Modification of Electron Acceptors in Nonfullerene (O-IDTBR1)-Based Derivatives on Nonlinear Optical Response: DFT/TDDFT Study

Fullerene-based organic compounds have been reported as useful materials with some limitations; nonetheless, fullerene-free compounds are primarily considered to be the most substantial materials for the development of modern technology. Therefore, in this study, a series of compounds (NFBC2-NFBC7) having an A-π-D architecture were designed for the first time from a synthesized nonfullerene (O-IDTBR) compound by changing different acceptor groups. The synthesized nonfullerene (O-IDTBR1) compound and its designed derivatives were optimized with frequency analyses at the M06/6-311G(d,p) level. These optimized structures were further characterized by different quantum chemical approaches. The study required that the designed compounds possess a low energy gap in comparison to that of O-IDTBR1 (2.385 eV). Moreover, density of state (DOS) calculations supported the FMO analysis and displayed charge transfers from the HOMO to the LUMO in an effective manner. The λ_max values of the investigated chromophores were observed to be greater than that of the reference compound. Amazingly, the highest amplitude of linear polarizability ⟨α⟩ and first (β_tot) and second hyperpolarizability values were achieved by NFBC6 at 1956.433, 2155888.013, and 7.868 × 10⁸ au, respectively, among all other derivatives. Effective NLO findings revealed that nonfullerene-based derivatives may contribute significantly to NLO technology.

Donor moieties with D-π-a framing modulated electronic and nonlinear optical properties for non-fullerene-based chromophores

Herein, a series of non-fullerene-based substantial chromophores (FHD1-FHD6) with a D-π-A framework was designed from a synthesized non-fullerene compound (FH) via structural tailoring with various donor moieties. The FH and its designed derivatives were optimized with frequency analysis at the M06/6-311G (d,p) level to confirm their true minima on potential energy surfaces. These optimized geometries were utilized to perform further analyses, such as absorption, natural bonding orbital (NBO), frontier molecular orbital (FMO), and nonlinear orbital (NLO) analyses at the aforesaid level. Quantum chemical study revealed that all the designed chromophores exhibited a lower band gap than that of the parent molecule with the exception of FHD3. Furthermore, density of states (DOS) analysis supported the findings from the FMO study, and this agreement revealed that the efficient charge was transferred from the HOMO to the LUMO. The NBO investigations disclosed that all the compounds comprised donor moieties with positive charges and acceptors having negative charges. Interestingly, π-conjugated linkers were also found with positive charges, showing an effective donating property. These NBO findings explicated that FHD1-FHD6 exhibited an efficient push-pull mechanism. The λ max values of the designed chromophores were observed to be greater than the reference compound. The average polarizability 〈α〉, first hyperpolarizability (β tot), and second hyperpolarizability 〈γ〉 values of FHD2 were found to be 2.170 × 10-22, 3.150 × 10-27, and 4.275 × 10-32 esu, respectively, while all the other derivatives had been reported in the relevant range. Efficient NLO data revealed that FH-based derivatives may contribute significantly toward NLO technology.

Exploration of Photophysical and Nonlinear Properties of Salicylaldehyde-Based Functionalized Materials: A Facile Synthetic and DFT Approach

The current research presents the synthesis of novel salicylaldehyde thiosemicarbazones (1-6) and their spectroscopic characterization employing UV-visible, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and NMR techniques. Experimental results are compared and validated with the results obtained theoretically by employing density functional theory at the M06 level with the 6-311G (d,p) basis set. Further, various parameters [natural bond orbital (NBO)], linear and nonlinear optical (NLO) properties, and global reactivity parameters (GRPs) are computationally calculated. The NBO approach has confirmed the stability of compounds on account of charge delocalization and hyper conjugative interaction network. Frontier molecular orbital analysis has explained the charge transfer and chemical reactivity capability, while GRPs have led to the analysis of kinetic stability of the studied molecules. Further, the probability of being NLO-active has been theoretically proved by the HOMO/LUMO energy difference (4.133-4.186 eV) and β values (192.778-501.709 a.u). These findings suggest that the studied compounds possess potential NLO applications as they have shown larger NLO values in comparison with that of the urea molecule, and such distinct properties prove their technological importance.

Compounds having nonlinear optical (NLO) characteristics have been proved to have a significant role in many academic and industrial areas; particularly, their leading role in surface interfaces, solid physics, materials, medicine, chemical dynamics, nuclear science, and biophysics is worth mentioning. In the present study, novel peptoids (1-4) were prepared in good yields via Ugi four-component reaction (Ugi-4CR). In addition to synthetic studies, computational calculations were executed to estimate the molecular electrostatic potential, natural bond orbital (NBO), frontier molecular orbital analysis, and NLO properties. The NBO analysis confirmed the stability of studied systems owing to containing intramolecular hydrogen bonding and hyperconjugative interactions. NLO analysis showed that investigated molecules hold noteworthy NLO response as compared to standard compounds that show potential for technology-related applications.

Nature of Linear Spectral Properties and Fast Electronic Relaxations in Green Fluorescent Pyrrolo[3,4-c]Pyridine Derivative

The electronic nature of 4-hydroxy-1H-pyrrolo[3,4-c]pyridine-1,3,6(2H,5H)-trione (HPPT) was comprehensively investigated in liquid media at room temperature using steady-state and time-resolved femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopic techniques. The analysis of the linear photophysical and photochemical parameters of HPPT, including steady-state absorption, fluorescence and excitation anisotropy spectra, along with the lifetimes of fluorescence emission and photodecomposition quantum yields, revealed the nature of its large Stokes shift, specific changes in the permanent dipole moments under electronic excitation, weak dipole transitions with partially anisotropic character, and high photostability. Transient absorption spectra of HPPT were obtained with femtosecond resolution and no characteristic solvate relaxation processes in protic (methanol) solvent were revealed. Efficient light amplification (gain) was observed in the fluorescence spectral range of HPPT, but no super-luminescence and lasing phenomena were detected. The electronic structure of HPPT was also analyzed with quantum-chemical calculations using a DFT/B3LYP method and good agreement with experimental data was shown. The development and investigation of new pyrrolo[3,4-c]pyridine derivatives are important due to their promising fluorescent properties and potential for use in physiological applications.

Key Electronic, Linear and Nonlinear Optical Properties of Designed Disubstituted Quinoline with Carbazole Compounds

Organic materials development, especially in terms of nonlinear optical (NLO) performance, has become progressively more significant owing to their rising and promising applications in potential photonic devices. Organic moieties such as carbazole and quinoline play a vital role in charge transfer applications in optoelectronics. This study reports and characterizes the donor-acceptor-donor-π-acceptor (D-A-D-π-A) configured novel designed compounds, namely, Q3D1-Q3D3, Q4D1-Q1D2, and Q5D1. We further analyze the structure-property relationship between the quinoline-carbazole compounds for which density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TDDFT) calculations were performed at the B3LYP/6-311G(d,p) level to obtain the optimized geometries, natural bonding orbital (NBO), NLO analysis, electronic properties, and absorption spectra of all mentioned compounds. The computed values of λmax, 364, 360, and 361 nm for Q3, Q4, and Q5 show good agreement of their experimental values: 349, 347, and 323 nm, respectively. The designed compounds (Q3D1-Q5D1) exhibited a smaller energy gap with a maximum redshift than the reference molecules (Q3-Q5), which govern their promising NLO behavior. The NBO evaluation revealed that the extended hyperconjugation stabilizes these systems and caused a promising NLO response. The dipole polarizabilities and hyperpolarizability (β) values of Q3D1-Q3D3, Q4D1-Q1D2, and Q5D1 exceed those of the reference Q3, Q4, and Q5 molecules. These data suggest that the NLO active compounds, Q3D1-Q3D3, Q4D1-Q1D2, and Q5D1, may find their place in future hi-tech optical devices.

Exploration of Noncovalent Interactions, Chemical Reactivity, and Nonlinear Optical Properties of Piperidone Derivatives: A Concise Theoretical Approach

The organic compounds with a π-bond system lead to electric charge delocalization which enables them to reveal fascinating nonlinear optical properties. Mono-carbonyl curcuminoids also have an appealing skeleton from the conjugation view point. Interesting chemical structures of the 3,5-bis(arylidene)-N-benzenesulfonyl-4-piperidone derivatives motivated us to perform density functional theory (DFT)-based studies. Therefore, computations using the B3LYP/6-311G(d,p) functional of DFT were executed to explore geometric parameters, highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO)-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energies, and natural bond orbital (NBO) analyses. Moreover, three different functionals such as HF, B3LYP, and M06 with the 6-311G(d,p) basis set were used to investigate the average polarizability ⟨α⟩ and first hyperpolarizability (β_tot)-based properties of all compounds. A good concurrence among calculated and experimental parameters was obtained through root mean square error calculations. The molecular stability of piperidone derivatives was examined using the Hirshfeld surface and NBO analyses. Natural population analysis was also performed to obtain insights about atomic charges. Calculated HOMO-LUMO energies showed that charge transfer interactions take place within the molecules. Moreover, global reactivity parameters including electronegativity, chemical hardness, softness, ionization potential, and electrophilicity were calculated using the HOMO and LUMO energies. The average polarizability ⟨α⟩ and first hyperpolarizability (β_tot) values of all compounds were observed to be larger in magnitude at the aforesaid functional than the standard compound.

A facile microwave assisted synthesis and structure elucidation of (3R)-3-alkyl-4,1-benzoxazepine-2,5-diones by crystallographic, spectroscopic and DFT studies

The use of microwave (MW) irradiation in organic synthesis has become increasingly popular within the pharmaceutical and academic arenas because it is a new enabling technology for drug discovery and development. It is a rapid way of synthesis, which involves faster reaction rates and high selectivity to conventional heating method of syntheses. The MW-assisted 7-exo-tet cyclization of N-acylanthranilic acids afforded (3R)-3-alkyl-4,1-benzoxazepines-2,5-diones in very short duration (20 min) with extraordinary high yields in comparison to conventional heating mode of synthesis. The method development, comparative yields of MW-assisted and thermal method of syntheses, crystallographic, spectroscopic and density functional theory (DFT) studies are reported herein. Four novel compounds with chemical formulas C₁₀H₉BrClNO₃5m, C₁₉H₁₉NO₃6e, C₁₃H₁₄ClNO₃6h and C₁₂H₁₁Br₂NO₃6h were synthesized, validated by ¹HNMR, ¹³CNMR, FT-IR, UVVis, EIMS spectroscopic techniques and confirmed by using single crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD) study. The DFT and TDDFT calculations at B3LYP/6-311 + G(d,p) level of theory were performed for comparative analysis of spectroscopic data, optimized geometries, frontier molecular orbitals (FMOs), natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis and nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of 5m, 6e, 6h and 6o. Overall, experimental findings were supported nicely by corresponding DFT computed results. The NBO analysis confirmed that the presence of non-covalent interactions, hydrogen bonding and hyper- conjugative interactions are pivotal cause for the existence of 5m, 6e, 6h and 6o in the solid-state. NLO analysis showed that 5m, 6e, 6h and 6o have significant NLO properties as compared to prototype standard compound which disclosed their potential for technology related applications.

First principles study of electronic and nonlinear optical properties of A–D–π–A and D–A–D–π–A configured compounds containing novel quinoline–carbazole derivatives

Materials with nonlinear optical (NLO) properties have significant applications in different fields, including nuclear science, biophysics, medicine, chemical dynamics, solid physics, materials science and surface interface applications. Quinoline and carbazole, owing to their electron-deficient and electron-rich character respectively, play a role in charge transfer applications in optoelectronics. Therefore, an attempt has been made herein to explore quinoline–carbazole based novel materials with highly nonlinear optical properties. Structural tailoring has been made at the donor and acceptor units of two recently synthesized quinoline–carbazole molecules (Q1, Q2) and acceptor–donor–π–acceptor (A–D–π–A) and donor–acceptor–donor–π–acceptor (D–A–D–π–A) type novel molecules Q1D1–Q1D3 and Q2D2–Q2D3 have been quantum chemically designed, respectively. Density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) computations are performed to process the impact of acceptor and donor units on photophysical, electronic and NLO properties of selected molecules. The λ_max values (321 and 319 nm) for Q1 and Q2 in DSMO were in good agreement with the experimental values (326 and 323 nm). The largest shift in absorption maximum is displayed by Q1D2 (436 nm). The designed compounds (Q1D3–Q2D3) express absorption spectra with an increased border and with a reduced band gap compared to the parent compounds (Q1 and Q2). Natural bond orbital (NBO) investigations showed that the extended hyper conjugation and strong intramolecular interaction play significant roles in stabilising these systems. All molecules expressed significant NLO responses. A large value of β_tot was elevated in Q1D2 (23 885.90 a.u.). This theoretical framework reveals the NLO response properties of novel quinoline–carbazole derivatives that can be significant for their use in advanced applications.

Electron Donor and Acceptor Influence on the Nonlinear Optical Response of Diacetylene-Functionalized Organic Materials (DFOMs): Density Functional Theory Calculations

Herein, we report the quantum chemical results based on density functional theory for the polarizability (α) and first hyperpolarizability (β) values of diacetylene-functionalized organic molecules (DFOM) containing an electron acceptor (A) unit in the form of nitro group and electron donor (D) unit in the form of amino group. Six DFOM 1–6 have been designed by structural tailoring of the synthesized chromophore 4,4′-(buta-1,3-diyne-1,4-diyl) dianiline (R) and the influence of the D and A moieties on α and β was explored. Ground state geometries, HOMO-LUMO energies, and natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis of all DFOM (R and 1–6) were explored through B3LYP level of DFT and 6-31G(d,p) basis set. The polarizability (α), first hyperpolarizability (β) values were computed using B3LYP (gas phase), CAM-B3LYP (gas phase), CAM-B3LYP (solvent DMSO) methods and 6-31G(d,p) basis set combination. UV-Visible analysis was performed at CAM-B3LYP/6-31G(d,p) level of theory. Results illustrated that much reduced energy gap in the range of 2.212–2.809 eV was observed in designed DFOM 1–6 as compared to parent molecule R (4.405 eV). Designed DFOM (except for 2 and 4) were found red shifted compared to parent molecule R. An absorption at longer wavelength was observed for 6 with 371.46 nm. NBO analysis confirmed the involvement of extended conjugation and as well as charge transfer character towards the promising NLO response and red shift of molecules under study. Overall, compound 6 displayed large <α> and β_tot, computed to be 333.40 (a.u.) (B3LYP gas), 302.38 (a.u.) (CAM-B3LYP gas), 380.46 (a.u.) (CAM-B3LYP solvent) and 24708.79 (a.u.), 11841.93 (a.u.), 25053.32 (a.u.) measured from B3LYP (gas), CAM-B3LYP (gas) and CAM-B3LYP (DMSO) methods respectively. This investigation provides a theoretical framework for conversion of centrosymmetric molecules into non-centrosymmetric architectures to discover NLO candidates for modern hi-tech applications.

Computational studies of 2-(4-oxo-3-phenylthiazolidin-2-ylidene)malononitrile

The molecular structure of the 2-(4-oxo-3-phenylthiazolidin-2-ylidene) malononitrile (3) is calculated using DFT B3LYP/6-311G(d, p) method. The calculated geometric parameters are in good agreement with the experimental data. The NBO calculations were performed to predict the natural atomic charges at the different atomic sites and study the different intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) interactions occurring in the studied system. The BD(2)C17-C19 → BD*(2)C14-C15, LP(2)O2 → BD*(1)N5-C9 and LP(1)N5 → BD*(2)C10-C11 ICT interactions causing stabilization of the system by 23.30, 30.63 and 52.48 kcal/mol, respectively. The two intense electronic transition bands observed experimentally at 249 nm and 296 nm are predicted using the TD-DFT calculations at 237.9 nm (f = 0.1618) and 276.4 nm (f = 0.3408), respectively. These electronic transitions are due to H-3 → L (94%) and H → L (95%) excitations, respectively.
