Abstract
High-throughput searches for spin-crossover molecules require Hubbard-U corrections to common density functional exchange-correlation (XC) approximations. However, the Ueff values obtained from linear response or based on previous studies overcorrect the spin-crossover energies. We demonstrate that employing a linearly mixed ensemble average spin state as the reference configuration for the linear response calculation of Ueff resolves this issue. Validation on a commonly used set of spin-crossover complexes shows that these ensemble Ueff values consistently are smaller than those calculated directly on a pure spin state, irrespective of whether that be low- or high-spin. Adiabatic crossover energies using this methodology for a generalized gradient approximation XC functional are closer to the expected target energy range than with conventional Ueff values. Based on the observation that the Ueff correction is similar for different complexes that share transition metals with the same oxidation state, we devise a set of recommended averaged Ueff values for high-throughput calculations.

Abstract

The ruthenium nitrosyl
moiety, {RuNO}6, is important
as a potential releasing agent of nitric oxide and is of inherent
interest in coordination chemistry. Typically, {RuNO}6 is
found in mononuclear complexes. Herein we describe the synthesis and
characterization of several multimetal cluster complexes that contain
this unit. Specifically, the heterotrinuclear μ3-oxido
clusters [Fe2RuCl4(μ3-O)(μ-OMe)(μ-pz)2(NO)(Hpz)2] (6) and [Fe2RuCl3(μ3-O)(μ-OMe)(μ-pz)3(MeOH)(NO)(Hpz)][Fe2RuCl3(μ3-O)(μ-OMe)(μ-pz)3(DMF)(NO)(Hpz)] (7·MeOH·2H2O) and the heterotetranuclear
μ4-oxido complex [Ga3RuCl3(μ4-O)(μ-OMe)3(μ-pz)4(NO)]
(8) were prepared from trans-[Ru(OH)(NO)(Hpz)4]Cl2 (5), which itself was prepared
via acidic hydrolysis of the linear heterotrinuclear complex {[Ru(μ-OH)(μ-pz)2(pz)(NO)(Hpz)]2Mg} (4). Complex 4 was synthesized from the mononuclear Ru complexes (H2pz)[trans-RuCl4(Hpz)2] (1), trans-[RuCl2(Hpz)4]Cl (2), and trans-[RuCl2(Hpz)4] (3). The new compounds 4–8 were all characterized by elemental
analysis, ESI mass spectrometry, IR, UV–vis, and 1H NMR spectroscopy, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction, with complexes 6 and 7 being characterized also by temperature-dependent
magnetic susceptibility measurements and Mössbauer spectroscopy.
Magnetometry indicated a strong antiferromagnetic interaction between
paramagnetic centers in 6 and 7. The ability
of 4 and 6–8 to form
linkage isomers and release NO upon irradiation in the solid state
was investigated by IR spectroscopy. A theoretical investigation of
the electronic structure of 6 by DFT and ab initio CASSCF/NEVPT2 calculations indicated a redox-noninnocent behavior
of the NO ancillary ligand in 6, which was also manifested
in TD-DFT calculations of its electronic absorption spectrum. The
electronic structure of 6 was also studied by an X-ray
charge density analysis. Mononuclear trans-[Ru(OH)NO(Hpz)4]2+ proved to
be a source of μ-hydroxido and μ3- and/or μ4-oxido bridging groups, which
could be incorporated into the heterotrinuclear complexes {[Ru(μ-OH)(μ-pz)2(pz)(NO)(Hpz)]2Mg}, [Fe2RuCl4(μ3-O)(μ-OMe)(μ-pz)2(NO)(Hpz)2], and [Fe2RuCl3(μ3-O)(μ-OMe)(μ-pz)3(MeOH)(NO)(Hpz)][Fe2RuCl3(μ3-O)(μ-OMe)(μ-pz)3(DMF)(NO)(Hpz)] (7·MeOH·2H2O) and the heterotetranuclear μ4-oxido complex [Ga3RuCl3(μ4-O)(μ-OMe)3(μ-pz)4(NO)]. The structures obtained were all confirmed
by SC-XRD, including an X-ray charge density analysis that revealed
the electronic structure of the RuFe2 cluster. Two of these nitrosyl
complexes underwent photoinduced isomerization with generation of
the nitrosyl linkage isomers MS1 and MS2, as revealed by IR spectroscopy
at 10 K.

Abstract
Abstract
The computational modeling of the spatial and electronic structures, energy characteristics, and magnetic properties of the bimetallic iron and cobalt complexes with 9,10-dimethyl-9,10-ethano-9,10-dihydro-2,3,6,7-tetrahydroxyanthracene and terminal tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine bases is performed using the density functional theory method (DFT UTPSSh/6-311++G(d,p)). The chosen tetradentate redox ligand is shown to be a promising precursor for the production of magnetically active compounds. The calculations make it possible to establish a relationship between the relative energies of the electronic isomers of the complexes and the structures of the ancillary N-donor moieties. The coordination compounds prone to the manifestation of spin transitions accompanied by a change in the magnetic properties are revealed.

Abstract
A series of coordination compounds of redox-active 1,10-phenanthroline-5,6-diimine with CoII bis-diketonates and FeII dihydrobis(pyrazolyl)borates has been computationally designed by means of density functional theory (DFT UB3LYP*/6-311++G(d,p)) calculations of their electronic structure, energy characteristics, and magnetic properties. Four types of complexes differing by the nature and position of the terminal metal-centered fragments have been considered. The performed systematic calculations have revealed the systems capable of undergoing thermally initiated spin-state switching rearrangements, including those governed by the synchronized mechanisms of spin crossover and valence tautomerism. The predicted magnetic characteristics allow one to consider the dinuclear cobalt complexes and heterometallic Co/Fe compounds with 1,10-phenanthroline-5,6-diimine as building blocks for molecular and quantum electronics devices. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract
Complexes of divalent ytterbium (1) and europium (2) with a dianionic o-amidophenolate ligand were prepared by both the direct reduction of 4,6-di-tert-butyl-N-(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-o-iminobenzoquinone (dpp-IQ) and the salt metathesis reaction of potassium o-amidophenolate with LnI2 (Ln = Yb, Eu). Oxidation of o-amidophenolates 1, 2 with one equivalent of dpp-IQ as well as the salt metathesis reaction of potassium o-iminosemiquinolate with LnI2 afforded ligand mixed-valent o-iminosemiquinonato-amidophenolato complexes of trivalent ytterbium (3) and europium (4). All novel complexes 1-4 were fully characterized, including the solid state structures of 1 and 2 determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The magnetic properties of paramagnetic 2-4 were examined.
