Characterization and antibacterial activity of Streptomycin Sulfate loaded Bioglass/Chitosan beads for bone tissue engineering

A novel sponge composite of chitosan-sodium tripolyphosphate-melamine for anionic dye Orange II removal

Since the potential carcinogenic, toxic and non-degradable dyes trigger serious environmental contamination by improper treatment, developing novel adsorbents remains a major challenge. A novel high efficiency and biopolymer-based environmental-friendly adsorbent, chitosan‑sodium tripolyphosphate-melamine sponge (CTS-STPP-MS) composite, was prepared for Orange II removing with chitosan as raw material, sodium tripolyphosphate as cross-linking agent. The composite was carefully characterized by SEM, EDS, FT-IR and XPS. The influence of crosslinking conditions, dosage, pH, initial concentration, contacting time and temperature on adsorption were tested through batch adsorption experiments. CTS-STPP-MS adsorption process was exothermic, spontaneous and agreed with Sips isotherm model accompanying the maximum adsorption capacity as 948 mg∙g-1 (pH = 3). Notably, the adsorption performance was outstanding for high concentration solutions, with a removal rate of 97 % in up to 2000 mg∙L-1 OII solution (100 mg sorbent dosage, 50 mL OII solution, pH = 3, 289.15 K). In addition, the adsorption efficiency yet remained 97.85 % after 5 repeated adsorption-desorption cycles. The driving force of adsorption was attributed to electrostatic attraction and hydrogen bonds which was proved by adsorption results coupled with XPS. Owing to the excellent properties of high-effective, environmental-friendly, easy to separate and regenerable, CTS-STPP-MS composite turned out to be a promising adsorbent in contamination treatment.

Optimizing magnetic, dielectric, and antimicrobial performance in chitosan-PEG-Fe2O3@NiO nanomagnetic composites

There is a growing interest in eco-friendly and cost-effective organic-inorganic nanocomposites due to their alignment with the principles of "green" chemistry, as well as their biocompatibility and non-toxicity. This study focused on producing Chitosan-PEG-Fe2O3@NiO nanomagnetic composites to improve the stability, dielectric properties, and antimicrobial effectiveness of these nanocomposite materials. The process involved synthesizing Fe2O3@NiO via sol-gel and polymerizing chitosan-PEG. The nanocomposites were characterized by XRD, TEM, FTIR, optical, dielectric, and VSM. Incorporating Fe2O3@NiO significantly improved stability, and the interaction with Fe2O3 during the sol-gel process facilitated the formation of NiFe2O4 with an increase in the crystallinity within the chitosan-PEG matrix. The study examined optical and dielectric properties, highlighting that the 3 NiO-doped chitosan-PEG-Fe2O3 composites had high electrical conductivity (1.8 ∗ 10-3 S/cm) and a significant dielectric constant (106 at low frequencies). As the ratio of NiO NPs within the chitosan-PEG-Fe2O3 increases, the energy band gap of chitosan-PEG-Fe2O3 films decreases up to 3.7 eV. This decrease is owing to the quantum confinement effect. These composites also demonstrated improved antimicrobial activity against E. coli and S. aureus and higher activity in the presence of nanomagnetic particles. The minimum inhibitory concentrations of CS-PEG-Fe2O3/NiO NPs against (Bacillus cereus, M. luteus, S. aureus and (S. enterica, H. pylori, E. coli) were (22-35 mm) and (21-34 mm), respectively.

Tetracalcium phosphate/polycaprolactone composite scaffold: Mechanical reinforcement, biodegradability regulation and bioactivity induction

Polycaprolactone (PCL) is considered a potential biomaterial due to its good biocompatibility, but its slow degradability and insufficient mechanical properties limit its wide application in bone tissue engineering. Tetracalcium phosphate's (TTCP) good degradability and inherent high stiffness are expected to compensate for the aforementioned defects of PCL and endow it with good biological activity. This goal of this study was to obtain bioactive PCL composite scaffolds with tuneable degradation properties and good mechanical strength via selective laser sintering technology (SLS). Composite porous scaffolds with TTCP contents of 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, and 25% were prepared, and the experimental results showed that the addition of TTCP significantly improved the mechanical properties of the scaffold. Notably, the tensile strength of the composite scaffold with 20% TTCP content reached 15.2 MPa, which was 2.9 times that of pure PCL, and the best flexural strength was found in the scaffold with 15% TTCP content (4.7 MPa). More importantly, the introduced TTCP not only achieved the effective pH regulation of the soaking solution and the promotion of biodegradation, but also provided the scaffold with good bioactivity and biocompatibility.

Synthesis and characterization of chitosan-corn starch-SiO2/silver eco-nanocomposites: Exploring optoelectronic and antibacterial potential

This work discusses the physicochemical and antimicrobial characteristics of chitosan-corn starch eco-nanocomposites integrated with silica@Ag nano-spheres. These composites were synthesized through sol-gel polymerization and subsequently exposed to simulated body fluid (SBF). The incorporation of Ag into the eco-nanocomposites led to a decrease in diffuse reflectance across the entire wavelength range. The dielectric permittivity exhibited an increase up to 52.1 at a frequency of 100 kHz, while the ac conductivity reached a value of 5.2 ∗ 10-6 (S cm-1) at the same frequency for the sample with the highest Ag content. The study utilized XRD and FTIR techniques to examine the materials before and after in vitro testing and evaluated the antibacterial properties of the eco-nanocomposites against several pathogenic microorganisms, including Staphylococcus haemolyticus, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Escherichia coli, using the agar diffusion method. The eco-nanocomposites demonstrated bioactivity by forming a hydroxy appetite layer on their surfaces and were capable of releasing silver (Ag) at concentrations of 1.3, 1.9, and 2.5 mol%. This study suggests that chitosan-corn starch-SiO2-based doped with Ag eco-nanocomposite has the potential for various applications, including biomedical and environmental fields, where their antibacterial properties can be utilized to combat harmful microorganisms.

Synthesis and Pharmacological Characterization of Metronidazole-Oxadiazole Derivatives

Background

The use of antibiotics with or without prescription is increasing worldwide. With certain limitations, metronidazole (MTZ) is extensively used as an antibacterial and antiparasitic drug. Derivatives of 1,2,4-oxadiazole (ODZ) are used to modify the chemical structure of drugs. The present study aimed to synthesize new MTZ-ODZ derivatives that could potentially lead to new medications.

Methods

The reaction of MTZ with ethyl chloroacetate and potassium carbonate anhydrous was used to produce compound 7. This compound was treated with hydrazine hydrate in methanol to obtain compound 8. Carbon disulfide and potassium hydroxide were then added to obtain compound 9, which was then mixed with various α-haloketones to obtain compounds 10a to 10f. Subsequently, the structures of the new MTZ-ODZ derivatives were determined.

Results

All new compounds exhibited excellent activity against all tested organisms. The synthesized compounds showed a significant radical scavenging activity. The IC₅₀ value for compounds 10a, 10b, 10c, 10d, 10e, and 10f was 70.42±0.15, 70.52±0.54, 85.21±0.85, 80.10±0.46, 82.52±0.13, and 70.45±0.12 g/mL, respectively. In terms of antigiardial activity, the IC₅₀ value for compounds 10a,10b, 10c, and 10d ranged from 1.31±0.11 µM to 2.26±0.49 µM. In contrast, the IC₅₀ for MTZ was 3.71±0.27 µM. Compound 10f showed the highest antigiardial activity with an IC₅₀ value of 0.88±0.52 µM.

Conclusion

Most of the MTZ-ODZ derivatives showed high radical scavenging activity in the benzene ring due to the activation of certain groups, such as OCH₃, NO₂, and OH. The results suggest that the newly synthesized compounds could be used as an antiparasitic drug.

Bone Bricks: The Effect of Architecture and Material Composition on the Mechanical and Biological Performance of Bone Scaffolds

Large bone loss injuries require high-performance scaffolds with an architecture and material composition resembling native bone. However, most bone scaffold studies focus on three-dimensional (3D) structures with simple rectangular or circular geometries and uniform pores, not able to recapitulate the geometric characteristics of the native tissue. This paper addresses this limitation by proposing novel anatomically designed scaffolds (bone bricks) with nonuniform pore dimensions (pore size gradients) designed based on new lay-dawn pattern strategies. The gradient design allows one to tailor the properties of the bricks and together with the incorporation of ceramic materials allows one to obtain structures with high mechanical properties (higher than reported in the literature for the same material composition) and improved biological characteristics.

Mechanical and antibacterial properties of ZnO/chitosan bio-composite films

In the current study, ZnO/chitosan bio-composite films were produced via solution-casting method. Two different ZnO powders, micrometer (d50 ≅ 1.5 μm) and nanometer sized (d50 ≅ 100 nm), were used to investigate the effect of ZnO particle size and concentration (0, 2, and 8% w/w of chitosan) on the mechanical and antibacterial properties of the ZnO/chitosan bio-composite films. The incorporation of the ZnO powders into the chitosan film resulted in an increase in the tensile strength (TS) and a decrease in the elongation at break (EB) values. Mechanical test results revealed that TS and EB properties were considerably affected (p < 0.05) by the concentration and particle size of the ZnO reinforcement. Disc diffusion method demonstrated good antibacterial activities of bio-composite films containing high amount of ZnO (8% w/w of chitosan) against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Bacillus subtilis. The growth-limiting effect of the films was more pronounced for S. aureus and K. pneumoniae. Due to enhanced TS and imparted antibacterial activity of the produced ZnO/chitosan bio-composite films, these materials are promising candidates for applications such as food packaging, wound dressing, and antibacterial coatings for various surfaces.

A review on orally disintegrating films (ODFs) made from natural polymers such as pullulan, maltodextrin, starch, and others

In recent years, orally disintegrating films (ODFs) have been studied as alternative ways for drug administration. They can easily be applied into the mouth and quickly disintegrate, releasing the drug with no need of water ingestion and enabling absorption through the oral mucosa. The ODFs matrices are typically composed of hydrophilic polymers, in which the natural polymers are highlighted since they are polymers extracted from natural sources, non-toxic, biocompatible, biodegradable, and have favorable properties for this application. Besides that, natural polymers such as polysaccharides and proteins can be applied either alone or blended with other synthetic, semi-synthetic, or natural polymers to achieve better mechanical and mucoadhesive properties and fast disintegration. In this review, we analyzed ODFs developed using natural polymers or blends involving natural polymers, such as maltodextrin, pullulan, starch, gelatin, collagen, alginate, chitosan, pectin, and others, to overview the recent publications and discuss how natural polymers can influence ODFs properties.
