Abstract
At present, the contamination of water resources by heavy metal ions has posed a significant threat to human survival. Therefore, it is particularly critical to develop low-cost, easy-to-use, and highly efficient heavy metal detection technologies. In this work, a fast and cost-effective fluorescent probe for nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) was prepared using one-step hydrothermal method with citric acid (CA) as carbon source, and melamine as nitrogen source. The structural and optical characterizations of the resulting N-CDs were investigated in details. The results showed that the quantum yield of the prepared fluorescent probe was as high as 45 %, and an average fluorescence lifetime was about 7.80 ns. N-CDs have excellent water solubility and dispersibility, with an average size of 2.58 nm. N-CDs exhibited excellent specific responsiveness to Fe3+ and can be used as an effective method for detecting Fe3+ at low-concentrations (the concentrations of N-CDs as low as 0.24 μg/mL) using fluorescent probes. The linear response of the fluorescent probe N-CDs to Fe3+ was formed in the concentration range of 20-80 μM, and the detection limit was 3.18 μM. In addition, in the actual water samples analysis, the recovery rate reached 97.05-100.58 %. The prepared of N-CDs provide available Fe3+ fluorescent probes in the environment.

Abstract
A fluorescent multichannel sensor array has been established based on three carbon dots derived from Tibetan medicine waste for rapid quantification and discrimination of six heavy metal ions. Due to the chelation between metal ions and carbon dots (CDs), this fluorescence "turn off" mode sensing array can quantify six metal ions as low as "μM" level. Moreover, the six heavy metal ions display varying quenching effects on these three CDs owing to diverse chelating abilities between each other, producing differential fluorescent signals for three sensing channels, which can be plotted as specific fingerprints and converted into intuitive identification profiles via principal component analysis (PCA) and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) technologies to accurately distinguish Cu2+, Fe3+, Mn2+, Ag+, Ce4+, and Ni2+ with the minimum differentiated concentration of 5 μM. Valuably, this sensing array unveils good sensitivity, exceptional selectivity, ideal stability, and excellent anti-interference ability for both mixed standards and actual samples. Our contribution provides a novel approach for simultaneous determination of multiple heavy metal ions in environmental samples, and it will inspire the development of other advanced optical sensing array for simultaneous quantification and discrimination of multiple targets.

Construction of an "ON-OFF" fluoroprobe using ionic liquids-modified orange peel-based carbon quantum dots for selective/sensitive permanganate assay in waters and the underlying quenching mechanisms. Anal Bioanal Chem 2023:10.1007/s00216-023-04768-7. Abstract
Herein, we fabricated blue-fluorescence carbon quantum dots modified by ionic liquids (ILs-CQDs) with a quantum yield of 18.13% by employing orange peel as a carbon source and [BMIM][H2PO4] as a dopant. The fluorescence intensities (FIs) of ILs-CQDs were significantly quenched upon the addition of MnO4- with excellent selectivity and sensitivity in waters, and this phenomenon provided a feasibility for constructing a sensitive "ON-OFF" fluoroprobe. The prominent overlapping between the maximum excitation/emission of ILs-CQDs and the UV-Vis absorption of MnO4- implied an inner filter effect (IFE). The higher Kq value demonstrated that the fluorescence-quenching phenomenon was a static-quenching process (SQE). Coordination between MnO4- and oxygen/amino-rich groups in ILs-CQDs resulted in the alteration of zeta potential in the fluorescence system. Consequently, the interactions between MnO4- and ILs-CQDs belong to a joint mechanism of IFE and SQE. When plotting the FIs of ILs-CQDs vs. the concentrations of MnO4-, a satisfactorily linear correlation was obtained across the range of 0.3-100 μM with a detectable limit of 0.09 μM. This fluoroprobe was successfully applied to detect MnO4- in environmental waters with satisfactory recoveries of 98.05-103.75% and relative standard deviations (RSDs) of 1.57-2.68%. Also, it gave more excellent performance metrics as compared to the Chinese standard indirect iodometry method and other previous approaches for MnO4- assay. Overall, these findings offer a new avenue to engineer/develop a highly efficient fluoroprobe based on the combination of ILs and biomass-derived CQDs for the rapid/sensitive detection of metal ions in environmental waters.

Abstract
Amino- and carboxyl-functionalized carbon quantum dots (Amino-CQDs) were synthesized through fast and simple microwave treatment of a citric acid, ethylenediamine and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) mix. The reproducible and stable optical properties from newly synthesized CQD dispersion with a maximum absorbance spectra at 330 nm and the symmetric emission maximum at 470 nm made the Amino-CQDs a promising fluorescence material for analytical applications. The highly aminated and chelate moieties on the CQDs was appropriate for a copper (Cu2+) cation sensor in the linear range from 1 × 10-4 mg/mL to 10 mg/mL with a limit of detection at 0.00036 mg/mL by static fluorescence quenching effects. Furthermore, Amino-CQDs demonstrated stable fluorescence parameters for assays in diluted alkali metal solution (Na+ and K+) and sea water. Finally, a visual sensor, based on Amino-CQDs, was successfully created for the 0.01-100 mg/mL range to produce a colorimetric effect that can be registered by computer vision software (Open CV Python).

Abstract
Lactoferrin (LF) is an iron-binding glycoprotein with various biological activities that has been extensively used in food and medical applications. Several methods for detecting LF have been reported, but they still face challenges in terms of sensitivity and simplicity of detection. To achieve an accurate and efficient detection of LF, we developed a method for the determination of LF in lactoferrin supplements using carbon dots (CDs) fluorescent probes. The N, S-doped PPI carbon dots (N, S-PPI-CDs) were prepared using a protein (peanut protein isolate) and cysteamine as precursors. The prepared N, S-PPI-CDs exhibited intense blue fluorescence and good biocompatibility, while the fluorescence intensity of the N, S-PPI-CDs showed a good linear relationship with Fe2+/Fe3+ concentration (0-2 μM). The N, S-PPI-CDs exhibited a high potential ability to rapidly detect Fe2+/Fe3+ within 30 s, with a limit of detection (LoD) of 0.21 μM/0.17 μM. Due to the reversible binding of LF to Fe, the N, S-PPI-CDs showed a high sensitivity and selectivity for LF, with a limit of detection (LoD) of 1.92 μg/mL. In addition, LF was quantified in real sample LF supplements and showed a fluctuation in recovery of less than 2.48%, further demonstrating the effectiveness of the fluorescent N, S-PPI-CDs sensor.
