Adaptive k-space sampling design for edge-enhanced DCE-MRI using compressed sensing

Impact of the Number of Iterations in Compressed Sensing Reconstruction on Ultrafast Dynamic Contrast-enhanced Breast MR Imaging

PURPOSE

To assess the impact of the number of iterations of compressed sensing (CS) reconstruction on the kinetic parameters and image quality in dynamic contrast-enhanced (DCE)-MRI of the breast, with prospectively undersampled CS-accelerated scans.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Breast examinations including ultrafast DCE-MRI using CS were conducted for 21 patients. Images were reconstructed with different numbers of iterations. The peak enhancement ratio of the aorta and wash-in slope, initial area under the curve, and Ktrans of the breast lesions were measured. The root mean square error and structural similarity between the images using 50 iterations and images with a lower number of iterations were evaluated as criterion for quantitative image evaluation.

RESULTS

Using an insufficient number of iterations, the contrast-enhanced effect was highly underestimated. In all semi-quantitative parameters, the number of iterations that stabilized the parameters in malignant lesions was higher than that in benign lesions. At least 15 iterations were needed for semi-quantitative parameters. For Ktrans, there were no significant differences between 10 and 50 iterations in both malignant and benign lesions.

CONCLUSION

The kinetic parameters using ultrafast DCE-MRI with CS are affected by the number of iterations, especially in malignant lesions. However, if the images are reconstructed with an adequate number of iterations, ultrafast DCE-MRI with CS can be a powerful technique having high temporal and spatial resolution.

Statistically Segregated k-Space Sampling for Accelerating Multiple-Acquisition MRI

A central limitation of multiple-acquisition magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the degradation in scan efficiency as the number of distinct datasets grows. Sparse recovery techniques can alleviate this limitation via randomly undersampled acquisitions. A frequent sampling strategy is to prescribe for each acquisition a different random pattern drawn from a common sampling density. However, naive random patterns often contain gaps or clusters across the acquisition dimension that, in turn, can degrade reconstruction quality or reduce scan efficiency. To address this problem, a statistically segregated sampling method is proposed for multiple-acquisition MRI. This method generates multiple patterns sequentially while adaptively modifying the sampling density to minimize k-space overlap across patterns. As a result, it improves incoherence across acquisitions while still maintaining similar sampling density across the radial dimension of k-space. Comprehensive simulations and in vivo results are presented for phase-cycled balanced steady-state free precession and multi-echo [Formula: see text]-weighted imaging. Segregated sampling achieves significantly improved quality in both Fourier and compressed-sensing reconstructions of multiple-acquisition datasets.

Implementation of time-efficient adaptive sampling function design for improved undersampled MRI reconstruction

To improve the efficacy of undersampled MRI, a method of designing adaptive sampling functions is proposed that is simple to implement on an MR scanner and yet effectively improves the performance of the sampling functions. An approximation of the energy distribution of an image (E-map) is estimated from highly undersampled k-space data acquired in a prescan and efficiently recycled in the main scan. An adaptive probability density function (PDF) is generated by combining the E-map with a modeled PDF. A set of candidate sampling functions are then prepared from the adaptive PDF, among which the one with maximum energy is selected as the final sampling function. To validate its computational efficiency, the proposed method was implemented on an MR scanner, and its robust performance in Fourier-transform (FT) MRI and compressed sensing (CS) MRI was tested by simulations and in a cherry tomato. The proposed method consistently outperforms the conventional modeled PDF approach for undersampling ratios of 0.2 or higher in both FT-MRI and CS-MRI. To fully benefit from undersampled MRI, it is preferable that the design of adaptive sampling functions be performed online immediately before the main scan. In this way, the proposed method may further improve the efficacy of the undersampled MRI.

Sparse Reconstruction Techniques in Magnetic Resonance Imaging: Methods, Applications, and Challenges to Clinical Adoption

The family of sparse reconstruction techniques, including the recently introduced compressed sensing framework, has been extensively explored to reduce scan times in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). While there are many different methods that fall under the general umbrella of sparse reconstructions, they all rely on the idea that a priori information about the sparsity of MR images can be used to reconstruct full images from undersampled data. This review describes the basic ideas behind sparse reconstruction techniques, how they could be applied to improve MRI, and the open challenges to their general adoption in a clinical setting. The fundamental principles underlying different classes of sparse reconstructions techniques are examined, and the requirements that each make on the undersampled data outlined. Applications that could potentially benefit from the accelerations that sparse reconstructions could provide are described, and clinical studies using sparse reconstructions reviewed. Lastly, technical and clinical challenges to widespread implementation of sparse reconstruction techniques, including optimization, reconstruction times, artifact appearance, and comparison with current gold standards, are discussed.
