Predicting Non-Mass Breast Cancer Utilizing Ultrasound and Molybdenum Target X-Ray Characteristics

Objective

The aim of this study is to investigate the influence of ultrasound and molybdenum target X-ray characteristics in predicting non-mass breast cancer.

Methods

A retrospective analysis was conducted on the clinical data of 185 patients presenting with non-mass breast lesions between September 2019 and 2021. The non-mass lesions were categorized into benign and malignant types based on ultrasonographic findings, which included lamellar hypoechoic, ductal alteration, microcalcification, and structural disorder types. Furthermore, an examination was undertaken to discern variances in molybdenum target X-ray parameters, ultrasonographic manifestations, and characteristics among individuals diagnosed with non-mass breast lesions.

Results

The ultrasonographic depiction of microcalcified lesions and the identification of suspicious malignancy through molybdenum target X-ray evaluation exhibited independent associations with non-mass breast cancer, yielding statistically significant differences (p < 0.05). Subsequently, the logistic regression model was formulated as follows: Logit (P) =-1.757+2.194* microcalcification type on ultrasound + 1.520* suspicious malignancy on molybdenum target X-ray evaluation. The respective areas under the receiver operating characteristic curves for microcalcification type on ultrasound, suspicious malignancy on molybdenum target X-ray, and the integrated diagnostic model were 0.733, 0.667, and 0.827, respectively, demonstrating discriminative capacities.

Conclusion

Using both ultrasound and molybdenum target X-ray diagnostics can increase the accuracy of non-mass breast cancer detection. The findings of this study have the potential to augment the detection rate of non-lumpy breast cancer and provide an imaging basis for enhancing the prognosis of individuals with breast cancer.

Enhanced photo-Fenton degradation of dyes under visible light with recyclable γ-Fe2O3/CQDs: Catalyst preparation, performance and mechanism insight

A low band gap and visible light-responsive heterogeneous Photo-Fenton catalyst of γ-Fe2O3/CQDs micron composite was prepared under the one-pot hydrothermal method. The Photo-Fenton degradation of γ-Fe2O3/CQDs towards dye solution of rhodamine B(RhB), methyl blue (MB), and methyl orange (MO) was studied comparatively with α-Fe2O3. The γ-Fe2O3/CQDs exhibited remarkable catalytic performance for various dyes and with a first-order rate (k) of 14 times higher than that of initial α-Fe2O3 with a low concentration of H2O2 of 0.049 mmol. L-1 and a wider pH range of 3.1-7.1. The microstructure of the compounds was observed by XRD, SEM, TEM, FT-IR, and XPS characterization results suggested that the γ-Fe2O3/CQDs nanocomposite was formed through the stable Fe-O-C bonds, thus, the band gap decreased, and it is more favorable for the distance of holes and electrons. The free radical trapping experiment and EPR analysis indicated that •OH and 1O2 were the major active species during the typical photo-Fenton reaction. What's more, the γ-Fe2O3/CQDs also exhibited good stability and magnetic properties. DFT conclusion shows that the mechanism of the potential determination step (PDS) on α-Fe2O3(220) is the cleavage of H2O2 with an energy barrier of only 0.08 eV, which is 0.54 eV lower than that of OH* on γ-Fe2O3(220). Thus it can be deemed that γ-Fe2O3/CQDs perform much higher catalytic activity for the dissociation of H2O2 than α-Fe2O3. This work gives a feasible and economical countermeasure of visible light Photo-Fenton dispose of dye wastewater with a recyclable magnetic γ-Fe2O3/CQDs micron catalyst.

Tumor diagnosis using carbon-based quantum dots: Detection based on the hallmarks of cancer

Carbon-based quantum dots (CQDs) have been shown to have promising application value in tumor diagnosis. Their use, however, is severely hindered by the complicated nature of the nanostructures in the CQDs. Furthermore, it seems impossible to formulate the mechanisms involved using the inadequate theoretical frameworks that are currently available for CQDs. In this review, we re-consider the structure-property relationships of CQDs and summarize the current state of development of CQDs-based tumor diagnosis based on biological theories that are fully developed. The advantages and deficiencies of recent research on CQDs-based tumor diagnosis are thus explained in terms of the manifestation of nine essential changes in cell physiology. This review makes significant progress in addressing related problems encountered with other nanomaterials.

Multi-modal nanoprobe-enabled biosensing platforms: a critical review

Nanomaterials show great potential for applications in biosensing due to their unique physical, chemical, and biological properties. However, the single-modal signal sensing mechanism greatly limits the development of single-modal nanoprobes and their related sensors. Multi-modal nanoprobes can realize the output of fluorescence, colorimetric, electrochemical, and magnetic signals through composite nanomaterials, which can effectively compensate for the defects of single-modal nanoprobes. Following the multi-modal nanoprobes, multi-modal biosensors break through the performance limitation of the current single-modal signal and realize multi-modal signal reading. Herein, the current status and classification of multi-modal nanoprobes are provided. Moreover, the multi-modal signal sensing mechanisms and the working principle of multi-modal biosensing platforms are discussed in detail. We also focus on the applications in pharmaceutical detection, food and environmental fields. Finally, we highlight this field's challenges and development prospects to create potential enlightenment.

Carbon Dots for Multiuse Platform: Intracellular pH Sensing and Complementary Intensified T1-T2 Dual Imaging Contrast Nanoprobes

Measurement of pH in living cells is a great and decisive factor for providing an early and accurate diagnosis factor. Along with this, the multimodal transverse and longitudinal relaxivity enhancement potentiality over single modality within a single platform in the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) field is a very challenging issue for diagnostic purposes in the biomedical field of application. Therefore, this work aims to design a versatile platform by fabricating a novel nanoprobe through holmium- and manganese-ion doping in carbon quantum dots (Ho-Mn-CQDs), which can show nearly neutral intracellular pH sensing and MRI imaging at the same time. These manufactured Ho-Mn-CQDs acted as excellent pH sensors in the near-neutral range (4.01-8.01) with the linearity between 6.01 and 8.01, which could be useful for the intracellular pH-sensing capability. An innumerable number of carboxyl and amino groups are present on the surface of the prepared nanoprobe, making it an excellent candidate for pH sensing through fluorescence intensity quenching phenomena. Cellular uptake and cell viability experiments were also executed to affirm the intracellular accepting ability of Ho-Mn-CQDs. Furthermore, with this pH-sensing quality, these Ho-Mn-CQDs are also capable of acting as T1-T2 dual modal imaging contrast agents in comparison with pristine Ho-doped and Mn-doped CQDs. The Ho-Mn-CQDs showed an increment of r1 and r2 relaxivity values simultaneously compared with only the negative contrast agent, holmium in holmium-doped CQDs, and the positive contrast agent, manganese in manganese-doped CQDs. The above-mentioned observations elucidate that its tiny size, excitation dependence of fluorescence behavior, low cytotoxicity, and dual modal contrast imaging capability make it an ideal candidate for pH monitoring in the near-neutral range and also as a dual modal MRI imaging contrast enhancement nanoprobe at the same time.

Folic acid functionalized gadolinium-doped carbon dots as fluorescence / magnetic resonance imaging contrast agent for targeted imaging of liver cancer

Gadolinium-doped carbon dots (Gd-CDs), as a new class of nanomaterial, has a wide application prospect in targeted imaging and monitoring diagnosis and treatment of liver cancer because of their good fluorescence (FL)-magnetic resonance (MR) imaging properties. First, Gd-CDs were synthesized by hydrothermal method with gadodiamide as gadolinium source, citric acid as carbon source and silane coupling agent (KH-792) as coupling agent with FL quantum yield (QY) of 48.2%. Then, folic acid (FA), which is highly expressed in liver cancer, was used as a targeting component to modify Gd-CDs to obtain targeted imaging agent (Gd-CDs-FA). The results showed that Gd-CDs and Gd-CDs-FA have low cytotoxicity and good biocompatibility, and the targeting and selectivity of Gd-CDs-FA to HepG2 cells could be observed under confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM). The T1 longitudinal relaxation rates (r1) of Gd-CDs and Gd-CDs-FA are 15.92 mM-1s-1 and 13.56 mM-1s-1, respectively. They showed good MR imaging ability in vitro and in vivo, and MR imaging in nude mice further proved the targeting imaging performance of Gd-CDs-FA. Therefore, Gd-CDs-FA with higher QY showed good FL-MR targeting imaging ability of liver cancer, which broke through the limitations of single molecular imaging probe in sensitivity and soft tissue resolution. This study provides a new idea for the application of Gd-CDs in FL and MR targeting imaging of liver cancer.

Preparation and performance of biocompatible gadolinium polymer as liver-targeting magnetic resonance imaging contrast agent

A biocompatible macromolecule-conjugated gadolinium chelate complex (PAV2-EDA-DOTA-Gd) as a new liver-specific contrast agent for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was synthesized and evaluated. An aspartic acid-valine copolymer was used as a carrier and ethylenediamine as a chemical linker, and the aspartic acid-valine copolymer was covalently linked to the small molecule MRI contrast agent Gd-DOTA (Dotarem) to synthesize a large molecule contrast agent. In vitro MR relaxation showed that the T1-relaxivity of PAV2-EDA-DOTA-Gd (13.7 mmol-1 L s-1) was much higher than that of the small-molecule Gd-DOTA (4.9 mmol-1 L s-1). In vivo imaging of rats showed that the enhancement effect of PAV2-EDA-DOTA-Gd (55.37 ± 2.80%) on liver imaging was 2.6 times that of Gd-DOTA (21.12 ± 3.86%), and it produced a longer imaging window time (40-70 min for PAV2-EDA-DOTA-Gd and 10-30 min for Gd-DOTA). Preliminary safety experiments, such as cell experiments and tissue sectioning, showed that PAV2-EDA-DOTA-Gd had low toxicity and satisfactory biocompatibility. The results of this study indicated that PAV2-EDA-DOTA-Gd had high potential as a liver-specific MRI contrast agent.

Advances in Magnetic Carbon Dots: A Theranostics Platform for Fluorescence/Magnetic Resonance Bimodal Imaging and Therapy for Tumors

Theranostics technology that combines tumor diagnosis or monitoring with therapy is an important direction for the future development of tumor treatment. It takes advantage of efficiently observing tumor tissues, monitoring tumor treatment in real time, and significantly improving the cure efficiency. Magnetic carbon dots (CDs) are of wide interest as molecular imaging probes, drug carriers, photosensitizers, and radiosensitizers in the integration of tumor fluorescence/magnetic resonance bimodal diagnosis and treatment because of their small size, good optical stability, magnetic relaxation rate, and biocompatibility. This review first analyzes and compares the synthesis methods and physicochemical properties of magnetic CDs in recent years and then concludes their mechanism in tumor fluorescence/magnetic resonance bimodal imaging and therapy in details. Subsequently, the research progress of their application in tumor theranostics are summarized. Finally, the problems and challenges of magnetic CDs for development at this stage are prospected. This review provides new ideas for their controlled synthesis and application in efficient and precise therapy for tumors.

Gadolinium-doped fluorescent carbon quantum dots as MRI contrast agents and fluorescent probes

In this research passivated gadolinium-doped carbon quantum dots (Gd-doped CQDs) were synthesized from starch by a hydrothermal method. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern of the Gd-doped CQDs showed the formation of highly amorphous carbon. The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) results suggested that the CQDs are functionalized with C-N and N-H bonds. The synthesized CQDs with a size distribution of 2-8 nm have an absorption peak at 271 nm in UV-Visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis). The photoluminescence (PL) in CQDs was dependent on the excitation wavelength. The QY of the synthesized CQDs was calculated to be 13.2%. The Gd-doped CQDs exhibited sustained PL in ionic solutions with different ionic strengths and different temperatures up to 65 °C. Fluorescence imaging on mouse C₃₄/connective tissue-L929 cells confirmed that Gd-doped CQDs could be well distributed over the cytoplasm. The magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed that the Gd-doped CQDs have extremely high longitudinal and transverse relaxivity values of as high as 218.28 mM^-1 s^-1 and 364.68 mM^-1 s^-1. The synthesized Gd-doped CQDs are promising candidates as multifunctional imaging probes and MRI contrast agents in biomedical diagnosis and brain mapping applications.

Recent Advances in Synthesis, Modification, Characterization, and Applications of Carbon Dots

Although there is significant progress in the research of carbon dots (CDs), some challenges such as difficulty in large-scale synthesis, complicated purification, low quantum yield, ambiguity in structure-property correlation, electronic structures, and photophysics are still major obstacles that hinder the commercial use of CDs. Recent advances in synthesis, modification, characterization, and applications of CDs are summarized in this review. We illustrate some examples to correlate process parameters, structures, compositions, properties, and performances of CDs-based materials. The advances in the synthesis approach, purification methods, and modification/doping methods for the synthesis of CDs are also presented. Moreover, some examples of the kilogram-scale fabrication of CDs are given. The properties and performance of CDs can be tuned by some synthesis parameters, such as the incubation time and precursor ratio, the laser pulse width, and the average molar mass of the polymeric precursor. Surface passivation also has a significant influence on the particle sizes of CDs. Moreover, some factors affect the properties and performance of CDs, such as the polarity-sensitive fluorescence effect and concentration-dependent multicolor luminescence, together with the size and surface states of CDs. The synchrotron near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) test has been proved to be a useful tool to explore the correlation among structural features, photophysics, and emission performance of CDs. Recent advances of CDs in bioimaging, sensing, therapy, energy, fertilizer, separation, security authentication, food packing, flame retardant, and co-catalyst for environmental remediation applications were reviewed in this article. Furthermore, the roles of CDs, doped CDs, and their composites in these applications were also demonstrated.

Magnetite Nanoparticles: Synthesis and Applications in Optics and Nanophotonics

Magnetite nanoparticles with different surface coverages are of great interest for many applications due to their intrinsic magnetic properties, nanometer size, and definite surface morphology. Magnetite nanoparticles are widely used for different medical-biological applications while their usage in optics is not as widespread. In recent years, nanomagnetite suspensions, so-called magnetic ferrofluids, are applied in optics due to their magneto-optical properties. This review gives an overview of nanomagnetite synthesis and its properties. In addition, the preparation and application of magnetic nanofluids in optics, nanophotonics, and magnetic imaging are described.

Naproxen release from carbon dot coated magnetite nanohybrid as versatile theranostics for HeLa cancer cells

Nanohybrid magnetite carbon dots (Fe₃O₄@CDs) were successfully synthesized to improve their applicability in multi-response bioimaging. The nanohybrid was prepared via pyrolysis and further loaded with naproxen (NAP) to promote drug delivery features. The characterization of the synthesized Fe₃O₄@CDs demonstrated the existence of Fe₃O₄ crystals by matching with JCPDS 75-0033 and its narrow size distribution at 11.30 nm; further, FTIR spectra confirmed the presence of Fe–O groups, C–O stretching, C–H sp², and C–O bending, along with dual-active fluorescence and magnetic responses. The nanohybrids also exhibit particular properties such as a maximum wavelength of 230.5 nm, maximum emission in the 320–420 nm range, and slight superparamagnetic reduction (Fe₃O₄: 0.93620 emu per g; Fe₃O₄@CDs: 0.64784 emu per g). The cytotoxicity assessment of the nanohybrid revealed an excellent half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC₅₀) of 17 671.5 ± 1742.6 μg mL⁻¹. Then, the incorporation of NAP decreased the cell viability to below 10%. The kinetic release properties of NAP are also confirmed as pH-dependent, and they follow the Korsmeyer–Peppas kinetics model. These results indicated that the proposed Fe₃O₄@CDs can be used as a new model for theranostic treatment.

Bio-Conjugated Quantum Dots for Cancer Research: Detection and Imaging

Ultrasound, computed tomography, magnetic resonance, and gamma scintigraphy-based detection and bio-imaging technologies have achieved outstanding breakthroughs in recent years. However, these technologies still encounter several limitations such as insufficient sensitivity, specificity and security that limit their applications in cancer detection and bio-imaging. The semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) are a kind of newly developed fluorescent nanoparticles that have superior fluorescence intensity, strong resistance to photo-bleaching, size-tunable light emission and could produce multiple fluorescent colors under single-source excitation. Furthermore, QDs have optimal surface to link with multiple targets such as antibodies, peptides, and several other small molecules. Thus, QDs might serve as potential, more sensitive and specific methods of detection than conventional methods applied in cancer molecular targeting and bio-imaging. However, many challenges such as cytotoxicity and nonspecific uptake still exist limiting their wider applications. In the present review, we aim to summarize the current applications and challenges of QDs in cancer research mainly focusing on tumor detection, bio-imaging, and provides opinions on how to address these challenges.

Carbon Based Nanodots in Early Diagnosis of Cancer

Detection of cancer at an early stage is one of the principal factors associated with successful treatment outcome. However, current diagnostic methods are not capable of making sensitive and robust cancer diagnosis. Nanotechnology based products exhibit unique physical, optical and electrical properties that can be useful in diagnosis. These nanotech-enabled diagnostic representatives have proved to be generally more capable and consistent; as they selectively accumulated in the tumor site due to their miniscule size. This article rotates around the conventional imaging techniques, the use of carbon based nanodots viz Carbon Quantum Dots (CQDs), Graphene Quantum Dots (GQDs), Nanodiamonds, Fullerene, and Carbon Nanotubes that have been synthesized in recent years, along with the discovery of a wide range of biomarkers to identify cancer at early stage. Early detection of cancer using nanoconstructs is anticipated to be a distinct reality in the coming years.

Application of magnetic nanomaterials in electroanalytical methods: A review

Magnetic nanomaterials (MNMs) have gained high attention in different fields of studies due to their ferromagnetic/superparamagnetic properties and their low toxicity and high biocompatibility. MNMs contain magnetic elements such as iron and nickel in metallic, bimetallic, metal oxide, and mixed metal oxide. In electroanalytical methods, MNMs have been applied as sorbents for sample preparation before the electrochemical detection (sorbent role), as the electrode modifier (catalytic role), and the integration of the above two roles (as both sorbent and catalytic agent). In this paper, the application of MNMs in electroanalytical methods have been classified based on the main role of the nanomaterial and discussed separately. Furthermore, catalytic activities of MNMs in electroanalytical methods such as redox electrocatalytic, nanozymes catalytic (peroxidase, catalase activity, oxidase activity, superoxide dismutase activity), catalyst gate, and nanocontainer have been discussed.

When rare earth meets carbon nanodots: mechanisms, applications and outlook

Rare earth (RE) elements are widely used in the luminescence and magnetic fields by virtue of their abundant 4f electron configurations. However, the overall performance and aqueous stability of single-component RE materials need to be urgently improved to satisfy the requirements for multifunctional applications. Carbon nanodots (CNDs) are excellent nanocarriers with abundant functional surface groups, excellent hydrophilicity, unique photoluminescence (PL) and tunable features. Accordingly, RE-CND hybrids combine the merits of both RE and CNDs, which dramatically enhance their overall properties such as luminescent and magnetic-optical imaging performances, leading to highly promising practical applications in the future. Nevertheless, a comprehensive review focusing on the introduction and in-depth understanding of RE-CND hybrid materials has not been reported to date. This review endeavors to summarize the recent advances of RE-CNDs, including their interaction mechanisms, general synthetic strategies and applications in fluorescence, biosensing and multi-modal biomedical imaging. Finally, we present the current challenges and the possible application perspectives of newly developed RE-CND materials. We hope this review will inspire new design ideas and valuable references in this promising field in the future.
