Synthesis of nanosilver on polyamide fabric using silver/ammonia complex

Biocidal and synergistic effect of three types of biologically synthesised silver/silver chloride nanoparticles

Three types of silver/silver chloride nanoparticles were obtained by green synthesis from three types of microbial biomass. Their biocidal capacity was tested against six microorganisms. Two filamentous fungi were used that had previously demonstrated the ability to synthesise nanoparticles, Penicillium sp. 8L2 and Botryosphaeria rhodina MAMB-05. Also, the synthesis capacity of a yeast, Rhodotorula mucilaginosa 1S1, was evaluated. The original protocols underwent slight modifications. At the same time, the fractional inhibitory concentration was obtained. The interaction between specific antibiotics and the nanoparticles that showed the greatest biocidal capacity came from Penicillium sp.8L2, and it was studied further. All nanoparticles were characterised by UV-vis spectrophotometry and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Also, their size distribution was analysed, which was in the range of 4 to 34 nm. The biocidal capacity of the nanoparticles for a group of bacteria and fungi was studied, presenting very low values in the range of 2.5-10 µg/mL for bacteria and 4-256 µg/mL for fungi. The interactions between the nanoparticles synthesised by Penicillium sp. 8L2 and a group of specific antibiotics for the tested microorganisms were also studied, proving that there was a synergistic interaction with vancomycin and ciprofloxacin and Staphylococcus epidermidis CECT 4183 and Escherichia coli CECT 101 bacteria, respectively.

Changes in characteristics of silver conductive fabrics owing to perspiration and washing

The original appearance and physical properties of smart clothing as well as the electrical properties of the conductive fabric applied, despite utilization and the management environment, need to be maintained. Previous research has only investigated the washability and functional changes of smart textiles according to the environment from the perspective of sensors and fabric material; however, they have not comprehensively considered actual usage conditions. In this study, changes in the appearance, color, chemical components, wettability, and electrical properties of silver-coated conductive knitted fabrics due to exposure to perspiration and washing were investigated based on the manufacturing methods of conductive fabrics. The conductive knitted fabric exposed to perspiration exhibited the most prominent color change, and the surface became rough and hydrophilic as AgCl and AgO were formed through a chemical reaction between perspiration and silver. In contrast, the conductivity of the fabric was enhanced by the release of Ag+ ions via perspiration. After washing, the silver layer on the surface of the conductive knitted fabric peeled off due to the interference and friction between the fabrics caused by the mechanical force generated during the cleaning process. There was no obvious chemical change, but the contact angle decreased as the nano-roughness decreased owing to the removal of silver particles. The conductivity slightly increased after washing but did not show a significant difference at 10% elongation. Finally, as the frequency of exposure to perspiration and washing increased, the silver layer coating the fiber or fabric surface peeled off and was damaged, resulting in a significant color change. Additionally, the chemical composition of the silver layer was significantly altered by perspiration and water and became hydrophilic. Surface resistance also increased linearly as the frequency of exposure to perspiration and washing increased. In terms of hand value, softness and smoothness decreased, and warmness increased after several cycles. Under all conditions, the conductive fabric with silver-coated yarn maintained a more optimized appearance and electrical properties than the silver-coated fabric according to the manufacturing method. Therefore, conductive yarn is more suitable for manufacturing conductive knitted fabrics for smart clothing in terms of durability. Additionally, specific management plans based on the actual use and environment of smart clothing using conductive knitted fabric are urgently needed.

Electroless plating of premetalized polyamide fibers for stretchable conductive devices

A new approach was used to produce electrically conductive polyamide yarns, employing an electroless plating technique, which involved stabilizing silver nanoparticles on the surface of the yarn using Sn²⁺. First, the [Ag(NH₃)²]⁺ complex was reduced using Sn²⁺ to produce silver nanoparticle seed layers on the fiber surface, followed by a formaldehyde reduction. The nucleation and growth of silver nanoparticles on the fiber surface were observed through SEM images, demonstrating varying degrees of silver deposition depending on the silver concentration. This deposition variation was confirmed through XRD patterns, TGA data and UV-vis spectra. Additionally, XPS characterization showed the evolution of the chemical state of silver and tin during the silver reduction process. Electrical resistance revealed that the resistance per unit length of the yarn ranged from 3 ± 0.3 Ω cm^-1 to 70 ± 6 Ω cm^-1, depending on the silver concentration. The resulting silver-plated yarn was incorporated into a stretchable device, demonstrating stable resistance over multiple cycles. This method of fabricating conductive yarn has the potential to open up new possibilities in the design and manufacture of stretchable conductive devices for flexible electronics.

Parsimonious methodology for synthesis of silver and copper functionalized cellulose

Metal nanomaterials, such as silver and copper, are often incorporated into commercial textiles to take advantage of their Antibacterial and antiviral properties. The goal of this study was to identify the most parsimonious method for the synthesis of silver, copper, or silver/copper bimetallic treated textiles. To accomplish this eight different methods were employed to synthesize silver, copper, and silver/copper functionalized cotton batting textiles. Using silver and copper nitrate as precursors, different reagents were used to initiate/catalyze the deposition of metal, including: (1) no additive, (2) sodium bicarbonate, (3) green tea, (4) sodium hydroxide, (5) ammonia, (6, 7) sodium hydroxide/ammonia at a 1:2 and 1:4 ratio, and (8) sodium borohydride. The use of sodium bicarbonate as a reagent to reduce silver onto cotton has not been used previously in literature and was compared to established methods. All synthesis methods were performed at 80 °C for one hour following textile addition to the solutions. The products were characterized by x-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis for quantitative determination of the metal content and x-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) analysis for silver and copper speciation on the textile. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive x-ray (EDX) and size distribution inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) were used to further characterize the products of the sodium bicarbonate, sodium hydroxide, and sodium borohydride synthesis methods following ashing of the textile. For the silver treatment methods (1 mM Ag +), sodium bicarbonate and sodium hydroxide resulted in the highest amounts of silver on the textile (8900 mg Ag/kg textile and 7600 mg Ag/kg textile) and for copper treatment (1 mM Cu +) the sodium hydroxide and sodium hydroxide/ammonium hydroxide resulted in the highest amounts of copper on the textile (3800 mg Ag/kg textile and 2500 mg Ag/kg textile). Formation of copper oxide was dependent on the pH of the solution, with 4 mM ammonia and other high pH solutions resulting in majority of the copper on the textile existing as copper oxide, with smaller amounts of ionic-bound copper. The identified parsimonious methods will lend themselves to the efficient manufacturing of antibacterial and antiviral textiles, or the development of multifunctionalized smart textiles.

Facile synthesis of nanomaterials as nanofertilizers: a novel way for sustainable crop production

Nutrient fertilization plays a major role in improving crop productivity and maintaining soil fertility. In the last few decades, the productivity of current agricultural practices highly depends on the use of chemical fertilizers. Major drawback of traditional fertilizers is their low crop nutrient use efficiency and high loss into water. Nanomaterial in agriculture is a multipurpose tool for increasing growth, development, and yield of plants. Nanotechnology facilitates the amplifying of agriculture production by reducing relevant losses and improving the input efficiency. Nanotechnology has emerged as an attractive field of research and has various agriculture applications, especially the use of nano-agrochemicals to increase nutrient use efficiency and agricultural yield. Nanofertilizers are more effective as compared to chemical fertilizers due to their cost-efficient, eco-friendly, non-toxic, and more stable in nature. Overall, this chapter focuses on synthesis of nanofertilizers through physical, chemical, and biological methods. This chapter will also explore the use of nano-enabled fertilizers to enhance the nutrient use efficiency for sustainable crop production, and global food safety.

Development and Characterization of High Environmentally Friendly Composites of Bio-Based Polyamide 1010 with Enhanced Fire Retardancy Properties by Expandable Graphite

Bio-based polyamide 1010 was melt-compounded with different percentages (2.5 to 10.0 wt.%) of expandable graphite (EGr) as an environmentally friendly solution to improve the flame retardancy properties. The mechanical, morphological, thermal and fire retardancy properties (among others) are analysed. The novelty of the article lies in the use of fully removable polyamide. The effect of the incorporation of EGr in the properties of this polymer was analysed and characterised. The incorporation of EGr into the PA1010 matrix led to very promising results. Mechanically, the EGr provided increased stiffness and a tensile strength up to 7.5 wt.%, verifying good mechanical performance. The DMTA results also show how the incorporation of EGr in the PA1010 matrix clearly increases the stiffness of the composites over the entire temperature range analysed. In terms of physical properties, water absorption of PA1010 was reduced particularly in the 10% EGr, which reduces the water absorption of PA1010 by 20%. In terms of flame retardant properties, with the incorporation of EGr, a significant reduction in the heat release rate (HRR) values as the concentration of the additive increases and a reduction in the maximum peak heat release rate (pHRR) can be observed for all compounds. In particular, it goes from 934 kW/m2 for neat polyamide to a value of 374 kW/m2 with 10% EGr. Finally, an improvement in the UL-94 rating of the 7.5 and 10% EGr composites was also observed, going from V-2 in the PA to V-1 in these composites.

Elemental Selenium Enriched Nanofiber Production

This study aimed to produce electrospun nanofibers from a polyvinyl butyral polymer (PVB) solution enriched with red and grey selenium nanoparticles. Scanning electron microscopic analysis was used to observe the samples, evaluate the fiber diameters, and reveal eventual artifacts in the nanofibrous structure. Average fiber diameter is determined by manually measuring the diameters of randomly selected fibers on scanning electron microscopic (SEM) images. The obtained nanofibers are amorphous with a diameter of approximately 500 nm, a specific surface area of approx. 8 m² g⁻¹, and 5093 km cm⁻³ length. If the red and grey selenium nanoparticles were produced in powder form and suspended to the ethanolic solution of PVB then they were located inside and outside the fiber. When selenium nanoparticles were synthesized in the PVB solution, then they were located only inside the fiber. These nanofiber sheets enriched with selenium nanoparticles could be a good candidate for high-efficiency filter materials and medical applications.

Antimicrobial Efficacy of Low Concentration PVP-Silver Nanoparticles Deposited on DBD Plasma-Treated Polyamide 6,6 Fabric

In this study, a low concentration (10 μg·mL−1) of poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP)-coated silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were deposited by spray and exhaustion (30, 70 and 100 °C) methods onto untreated and dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma-treated polyamide 6,6 (PA66) fabric. DBD plasma-treated samples showed higher AgNP deposition than untreated ones for all methods. After five washing cycles, only DBD plasma-treated samples displayed AgNPs on the fabric surface. The best-performing method was exhaustion at 30 °C, which exhibited less agglomeration and the best antibacterial efficacy against S. aureus (4 log reduction). For E. coli, the antimicrobial effect showed good results in all the exhaustion samples (5 log reduction). Considering the spray method, only the DBD plasma-treated samples showed some bacteriostatic activity for both strains, but the AgNP concentration was not enough to have a bactericidal effect. Our results suggest DBD plasma may be a low cost and chemical-free method for the preparation of antibacterial textiles, allowing for the immobilization of a very low—but effective—concentration of AgNPs.

Bactericidal and Cytotoxic Properties of Silver Nanoparticles

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) can be synthesized from a variety of techniques including physical, chemical and biological routes. They have been widely used as nanomaterials for manufacturing cosmetic and healthcare products, antimicrobial textiles, wound dressings, antitumor drug carriers, etc. due to their excellent antimicrobial properties. Accordingly, AgNPs have gained access into our daily life, and the inevitable human exposure to these nanoparticles has raised concerns about their potential hazards to the environment, health, and safety in recent years. From in vitro cell cultivation tests, AgNPs have been reported to be toxic to several human cell lines including human bronchial epithelial cells, human umbilical vein endothelial cells, red blood cells, human peripheral blood mononuclear cells, immortal human keratinocytes, liver cells, etc. AgNPs induce a dose-, size- and time-dependent cytotoxicity, particularly for those with sizes ≤10 nm. Furthermore, AgNPs can cross the brain blood barrier of mice through the circulation system on the basis of in vivo animal tests. AgNPs tend to accumulate in mice organs such as liver, spleen, kidney and brain following intravenous, intraperitoneal, and intratracheal routes of administration. In this respect, AgNPs are considered a double-edged sword that can eliminate microorganisms but induce cytotoxicity in mammalian cells. This article provides a state-of-the-art review on the synthesis of AgNPs, and their applications in antimicrobial textile fabrics, food packaging films, and wound dressings. Particular attention is paid to the bactericidal activity and cytotoxic effect in mammalian cells.

Human health risks due to exposure to inorganic and organic chemicals from textiles: A review

It is well known that a number of substances used in the textile industry can mean not only environmental, but also health problems. The scientific literature regarding potential adverse health effects of chemical substances in that industry is mainly related with human exposure during textile production. However, information about exposure of consumers is much more limited. Although most research on the health effects of chemicals in textiles concern allergic skin reactions, contact allergy is not the only potential human health problem. In this paper, we have reviewed the current scientific information regarding human exposure to chemicals through skin-contact clothes. The review has been focused mainly on those chemicals whose probabilities of being detected in clothes were rather higher. Thus, we have revised the presence of flame retardants, trace elements, aromatic amines, quinoline, bisphenols, benzothiazoles/benzotriazoles, phthalates, formaldehyde, and also metal nanoparticles. Human dermal exposure to potentially toxic chemicals through skin-contact textiles/clothes shows a non-negligible presence in some textiles, which might lead to potential systemic risks. Under specific circumstances of exposure, the presence of some chemicals might mean non-assumable cancer risks for the consumers.

Nanomaterials for Functional Textiles and Fibers

Nanoparticles are very interesting because of their surface properties, different from bulk materials. Such properties make possible to endow ordinary products with new functionalities. Their relatively low cost with respect to other nano-additives make them a promising choice for industrial mass-production systems. Nanoparticles of different kind of materials such as silver, titania, and zinc oxide have been used in the functionalization of fibers and fabrics achieving significantly improved products with new macroscopic properties. This article reviews the most relevant approaches for incorporating such nanoparticles into synthetic fibers used traditionally in the textile industry allowing to give a solution to traditional problems for textiles such as the microorganism growth onto fibers, flammability, robustness against ultraviolet radiation, and many others. In addition, the incorporation of such nanoparticles into special ultrathin fibers is also analyzed. In this field, electrospinning is a very promising technique that allows the fabrication of ultrathin fiber mats with an extraordinary control of their structure and properties, being an ideal alternative for applications such as wound healing or even functional membranes.

A robust super-paramagnetic TiO2:Fe3O4:Ag nanocomposite with enhanced photo and bio activities on polyester fabric via one step sonosynthesis

High intensity ultrasound was used for the synthesis and simultaneous deposition of TiO2:Fe3O4:Ag nanocomposites on polyester surface providing a feasible route for imparting magnetic and enhanced antibacterial and self-cleaning activities with controllable hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity at low temperature. Synergistic impact of sonochemistry and physical effects of ultrasound originating from implosive collapse of bubbles were responsible for the formation and adsorption of nanomaterials on the fabric surface during ultrasound irradiation. The increase in photocatalytic activity of TiO2 was obtained attributing to the co-operation of iron oxide and silver nanoparticles nucleated on TiO2 surface boosting the electron-hole pair separation and prolonging their recombination rate. The process was further optimized in terms of reagents concentrations including Fe(2+)/TiO2 and Ag/TiO2 molar ratios using central composite design in order to achieve the best self-cleaning property of the treated fabric. The magnetic measurements indicated the super-paramagnetic behavior of the treated fabric with saturation magnetization of 4.5 (emu/g). Findings suggest the potential of the proposed facial method in producing an intelligent fabric with durable multi-functional activities that can be suitable for various applications including medical, military, bio-separation, bio-sensors, magneto graphic printing, magnetic screens and magnetic filters.

Size and Aging Effects on Antimicrobial Efficiency of Silver Nanoparticles Coated on Polyamide Fabrics Activated by Atmospheric DBD Plasma

This work studies the surface characteristics, antimicrobial activity, and aging effect of plasma-pretreated polyamide 6,6 (PA66) fabrics coated with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), aiming to identify the optimum size of nanosilver exhibiting antibacterial properties suitable for the manufacture of hospital textiles. The release of bactericidal Ag(+) ions from a 10, 20, 40, 60, and 100 nm AgNPs-coated PA66 surface was a function of the particles' size, number, and aging. Plasma pretreatment promoted both ionic and covalent interactions between AgNPs and the formed oxygen species on the fibers, favoring the deposition of smaller-diameter AgNPs that consequently showed better immediate and durable antimicrobial effects against Gram-negative Escherichia coli and Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. Surprisingly, after 30 days of aging, a comparable bacterial growth inhibition was achieved for all of the fibers treated with AgNPs <100 nm in size. The Ag(+) in the coatings also favored the electrostatic stabilization of the plasma-induced functional groups on the PA66 surface, thereby retarding the aging process. At the same time, the size-related ratio (Ag(+)/Ag(0)) of the AgNPs between 40 and 60 nm allowed for the controlled release of Ag(+) rather than bulk silver. Overall, the results suggest that instead of reducing the size of the AgNPs, which is associated with higher toxicity, similar long-term effects can be achieved with larger NPs (40-60 nm), even in lower concentrations. Because the antimicrobial efficiency of AgNPs larger than 30 nm is mainly ruled by the release of Ag(+) over time and not by the size and number of the AgNPs, this parameter is crucial for the development of efficient antimicrobial coatings on plasma-treated surfaces and contributes to the safety and durability of clothing used in clinical settings.
