Abstract
In this study, an analytical strategy was proposed for the determination of cobalt at trace levels by using a flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry (FAAS) system after magnetic hydrogel based dispersive solid phase extraction (MH-DSPE). Poly(vinyl alcohol) based magnetic hydrogels (PVA-MH) were synthesized easily, quickly, and cost effectively in the laboratory and used as an adsorbent material in the microextraction process. Under the optimum experimental conditions, the limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantitation (LOQ) values were recorded as 4.2 and 14.1 μg L-1, respectively. To investigate the matrix effects on the analyte signal, spike experiments were performed using chamomile tea extracts and good recovery results were obtained between 85.7 and 113.8%. A 57.8-fold improvement was achieved in the detection power compared to that of a conventional FAAS system. The results obtained throughout all experimental studies demonstrated the applicability in addition to the accuracy of the method for the quantification of trace levels of cobalt with high accuracy in a chamomile tea matrix.

Abstract
A novel adsorbent, 3-phenyl-1-(2-pyridyl)thiourea (PPTU) was synthesized and its adsorption capabilities were studied for Cu(II), Cd(II), Ni(II), Pb(II) and Fe(II) cations in the waters such as tap and polluted seawaters. The kinetics, Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms were discussed related to the adsorptions. The adsorption capacities of PPTU were found 9.4; 12.6; 90.9; 57.1 and 30.4 mg g-1 and preconcentration with PPTU including the FAAS step yielded the LOQ values 0.46; 2.65; 1.12; 2.65 and 1.72 ng mL-1 for Cu(II), Cd(II), Ni(II), Pb(II) and Fe(II), respectively. The adsorbent after the elutions and washings could be reused three times in the next adsorptions. The interferences on the adsorptions arising from the major cations of the seawater and the usability of PPTU for interested metals in the seawater were discussed. The proposed method is simple with highly efficient and green preconcentration procedure for trace analysis of the target metal ions.

Abstract
A novel sol-gel pyridylethylthiopropyl functionalized silica-based sorbent was synthesized and utilized in an on-line column preconcentration system coupled with flame atomic absorption spectrometry for metal determination. The developed platform was used for the determination of Pb(II) and Cu(II) in beer samples, since there are limited automatic methods for routine analysis of alcoholic beverage. For a preconcentration time of 60 s, the calculated enhancement factors were 96 for Cu(II) and 130 for Pb(II). The limits of detection were 0.33 μg L-1 and 1.98 μg L-1 for Cu(II) and Pb(II), respectively. Moreover, the RSDs were less than 2.9% indicating good method precision. The method was successfully employed for the analysis of commercially available beers. The Cu(II) content of the samples was 1.6-21.8 μg L-1 and the Pb(II) content was 7.3-17.6 μg L-1. The developed manifold exhibited operational simplicity and good performance characteristics, indicating its potential utilization for routine analysis in beer industry.

Abstract
Electromembrane extraction (EME) is an extraction method on the micro scale, in which charged compounds are extracted from a donor phase (sample solution) into an acceptor phase via a supported liquid membrane (SLM) containing a water-immiscible organic solvent. To enhance the extraction efficiency and selectivity in this method, some studies have focused on the modification of the SLM, and thus many strategies have been reported for this purpose. One of these techniques is the introduction of nanomaterials in the SLM structure, which can enhance the extraction efficiency. In the current study, the different nanostructures used for SLM modification in the EME method are reviewed. Furthermore, the related analytical parameters of the developed techniques are classified and tabulated. It is hoped that this review will motivate further research in this field using other nanostructures.

Abstract
A novel graphene-oxide-derived material was synthesized after modification of graphene oxide with sodium hydroxide and used for the dispersive solid-phase extraction (d-SPE) of different elements (Pb, Cd, Ba, Zn, Cu and Ni) prior to their determination by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES). The prepared nanomaterial was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), nitrogen adsorption, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Full factorial design and Derringer’s type desirability function were used for the optimization of the d-SPE procedure. Pareto charts illustrated the effects of each of the examined factors and their interactions on the determination of the elements. Under the optimum conditions, detection limits (LODs) for the elements ranged between 0.01 and 0.21 μg g−1, intra-day repeatability (n = 5) was lower than 1.9% and inter-day repeatability (n = 5 × 3) was lower than 4.7%. Relative recovery values ranged between 88.1 and 117.8%. The method was validated and successfully applied for the determination of trace elements in poultry, pork and beef samples from the local market. The proposed method is simple, rapid, sensitive and the novel sorbent can be used at least ten times.

Abstract
Graphene oxide is a compound with a form similar to graphene, composed of carbon atoms in a sp2 single-atom layer of a hybrid connection. Due to its significant surface area and its good mechanical and thermal stability, graphene oxide has a plethora of applications in various scientific fields including heterogenous catalysis, gas storage, environmental remediation, etc. In analytical chemistry, graphene oxide has been successfully employed for the extraction and preconcentration of organic compounds, metal ions, and proteins. Since graphene oxide sheets are negatively charged in aqueous solutions, the material and its derivatives are ideal sorbents to bind with metal ions. To date, various graphene oxide nanocomposites have been successfully synthesized and evaluated for the extraction and preconcentration of metal ions from biological, environmental, agricultural, and food samples. In this review article, we aim to discuss the application of graphene oxide and functionalized graphene oxide nanocomposites for the extraction of metal ions prior to their determination via an instrumental analytical technique. Applications of ionic liquids and deep eutectic solvents for the modification of graphene oxide and its functionalized derivatives are also discussed.

Abstract
In an effort to achieve high sensitivity analysis methods for ultra-trace levels of heavy metals, numerous new nanomaterials are explored for the application in preconcentration processes and sensing systems. Nanomaterial-based methods have proven to be effective for selective analysis and speciation of heavy metals in combination with spectrometric techniques. This review outlined the different types of nanomaterials applied in the field of heavy metal analysis, and concentrated on the latest developments in various new materials. In particular, the functionalization of traditional materials and the exploitation of bio-functional materials could increase the specificity to target metals. The hybridization of multiple materials could improve material properties, to build novel sensor system or achieve detection-removal integration. Finally, we discussed the future perspectives of nanomaterials in the heavy metal preconcentration and sensor design, as well as their respective advantages and challenges. Despite impressive progress and widespread attention, the development of new nanomaterials and nanotechnology is still hampered by numerous challenges, particularly in the specificity to the target and the anti-interference performance in complex matrices.

Abstract
A direct on-line complexion combined with micelle to solvent stacking method was proposed for simultaneous determination of metal ions by capillary electrophoresis coupled diode array detector. During the experiment, a plug of complexing agent was first injected to the inlet of capillary, followed by introducing the micelle-bound metal ions. Then the metal ions produced a micelle-to-solvent stacking effect and interacted with the complexing agent under a positive voltage. Continued application of voltage, the analytes were effectively focused and separated in the capillary zone electrophoresis. Repeatability was ranged from 1.89% to 1.94% for the migration time. The detection limits were 2.66-27.9 ng mL-1 for Ni2+, Co2+, Cu2+, Hg2+ and Cd2+. Furthermore, the developed method showed a great potential for the determination of metal ions in the crayfish, beebread and Dendrobium officinale samples.

Abstract
In this research, a novel magnetic cobalt ion imprinted adsorbent (Co(II)-MIIP) was synthesized by use of magnetic SBA-15 core-shell. It was functionalized by dithizone, and after identification by various techniques was used for removal of cobalt from aquatic systems. The uptake of cobalt proceeded very fast and achieved to equilibration within 5 min at which 74 mg g-1 of cobalt was adsorbed at pH = 8 with adsorbent dose of 0.15 g. The ion imprinted sorbent exhibited good selectivity towards cobalt ions. Separation and recovery of the used sorbent was carried out respectively by use of magnetic field and by use of HNO3 (0.1 M), and 85% of the initial capacity was obtained after seven 7 regeneration cycles. Different isotherm models, and error analysis were used to evaluate the experimental data. Thermodynamic, and kinetic evaluations showed that sorption process was endothermic, and described by second order kinetic model (R2 > 0.99). The equilibrium was established within five min.

Abstract
Here, the researchers report on the synthesis of ion imprinted polymeric (IIP) nanoparticles using a thermal polymerization strategy, and their usage for the separation of Ni(2+) ion from water samples. The prepared Ni-IIP was characterized by colorimetry, FT-IR spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. It was found that the particle size of the prepared particle to be 50-70 nm in diameter with the highly selective binding capability for Ni(2+) ion, with reasonable adsorption and desorption process. After preconcentration, bound ions can be eluted with an aqueous solution of hydrochloric acid, after their complexation with dimethylglyoxime, these ions can be quantified by UV-Vis absorption spectrophotometry. The effect of various parameters on the extraction efficiency including pH of sample solution, adsorption and leaching times, initial sample volume, concentration and volume of eluent were investigated. In selectivity study, it was found that imprinting causes increased affinity of the prepared IIP toward Ni(2+) ion over other ions such as Na(+), K(+), Ag(+), Co(2+), Cu(2+), Cd(2+), Hg(2+), Pb(2+), Zn(2+), Mn(2+), Mg(2+), Cr(3+), and Fe(3+). The prepared IIP can be used and regenerated for at least eight times without any significant decrease in binding affinities. The prepared IIP is considered to be promising and selective sorbent for solid-phase extraction and preconcentration of Ni(2+) ion from different water samples.

Abstract
We describe a novel solid phase sorbent that was synthesized by coupling graphene oxide (GO) to ethylenediamine (EDA). This nanomaterial (referred to as GO-EDA) is capable of adsorbing the ions of iron, cobalt, nickel, copper, zinc and lead. The ethylenediamine-modified graphene oxide was characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The analytical procedure relies on (a) sorption of metal ions on GO-EDA dispersed in aqueous samples; (b) filtering, and (c) direct submission of the filter paper to energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry. This kind of dispersive micro-solid phase extraction was optimized with respect to pH values, concentration of GO-EDA, contact time, and the effects of interfering ions and humic acid on recovery of determined elements. Under optimized conditions, the recoveries of spiked samples range from 90 to 98 %. The detection limits are 0.07, 0.10, 0.07, 0.08, 0.06 and 0.10 ng mL-1 for Fe(III), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(II) and Pb(II), respectively. The method has a relative standard deviation of <6 %, and its accuracy was verified by analysis of two standard reference materials [LGC6016 (estuarine water) and BCR-610 (groundwater)]. It was successfully applied to the determination of trace amounts of these metal ions in water samples. Graphical AbstractGraphene oxide was coupled to ethylenediamine in order to obtain an effective sorbent (GO-EDA) for preconcentration of Fe(III), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(II) and Pb(II) from environmental water samples.
