Impact of ZrO2 Content on the Formation of Sr-Enriched Phosphates in Al2O3/ZrO2 Nanocomposites for Bone Tissue Engineering

This study investigates the profound impact of the ZrO2 inclusion volume on the characteristics of Al2O3/ZrO2 nanocomposites, particularly influencing the formation of calcium phosphates on the surface. This research, aimed at advancing tissue engineering, prepared nanocomposites with 5, 10, and 15 vol% ZrO2, subjecting them to chemical surface treatment for enhanced calcium phosphate deposition sites. Biomimetic coating with Sr-enriched simulated body fluid (SBF) further enhanced the bioactivity of nanocomposites. While the ZrO2 concentration heightened the oxygen availability on nanocomposite surfaces, the quantity of Sr-containing phosphate was comparatively less influenced than the formation of calcium phosphate phases. Notably, the coated nanocomposites exhibited a high cell viability and no toxicity, signifying their potential in bone tissue engineering. Overall, these findings contribute to the development of regenerative biomaterials, holding promise for enhancing bone regeneration therapies.

Current developments and future perspectives of nanotechnology in orthopedic implants: an updated review

Orthopedic implants are the most commonly used fracture fixation devices for facilitating the growth and development of incipient bone and treating bone diseases and defects. However, most orthopedic implants suffer from various drawbacks and complications, including bacterial adhesion, poor cell proliferation, and limited resistance to corrosion. One of the major drawbacks of currently available orthopedic implants is their inadequate osseointegration at the tissue-implant interface. This leads to loosening as a result of immunological rejection, wear debris formation, low mechanical fixation, and implant-related infections. Nanotechnology holds the promise to offer a wide range of innovative technologies for use in translational orthopedic research. Nanomaterials have great potential for use in orthopedic applications due to their exceptional tribological qualities, high resistance to wear and tear, ability to maintain drug release, capacity for osseointegration, and capability to regenerate tissue. Furthermore, nanostructured materials possess the ability to mimic the features and hierarchical structure of native bones. They facilitate cell proliferation, decrease the rate of infection, and prevent biofilm formation, among other diverse functions. The emergence of nanostructured polymers, metals, ceramics, and carbon materials has enabled novel approaches in orthopaedic research. This review provides a concise overview of nanotechnology-based biomaterials utilized in orthopedics, encompassing metallic and nonmetallic nanomaterials. A further overview is provided regarding the biomedical applications of nanotechnology-based biomaterials, including their application in orthopedics for drug delivery systems and bone tissue engineering to facilitate scaffold preparation, surface modification of implantable materials to improve their osteointegration properties, and treatment of musculoskeletal infections. Hence, this review article offers a contemporary overview of the current applications of nanotechnology in orthopedic implants and bone tissue engineering, as well as its prospective future applications.

Metal Ion-Doped Hydroxyapatite-Based Materials for Bone Defect Restoration

Hydroxyapatite (HA)-based materials are widely used in the bone defect restoration field due to their stable physical properties, good biocompatibility, and bone induction potential. To further improve their performance with extra functions such as antibacterial activity, various kinds of metal ion-doped HA-based materials have been proposed and synthesized. This paper offered a comprehensive review of metal ion-doped HA-based materials for bone defect restoration based on the introduction of the physicochemical characteristics of HA followed by the synthesis methods, properties, and applications of different kinds of metal ion (Ag+, Zn2+, Mg2+, Sr2+, Sm3+, and Ce3+)-doped HA-based materials. In addition, the underlying challenges for bone defect restoration using these materials and potential solutions were discussed.

Silver-Containing Biomaterials for Biomedical Hard Tissue Implants

Bacterial infection caused by biomaterials is a very serious problem in the clinical treatment of implants. The emergence of antibiotic resistance has prompted other antibacterial agents to replace traditional antibiotics. Silver is rapidly developing as an antibacterial candidate material to inhibit bone infections due to its significant advantages such as high antibacterial timeliness, high antibacterial efficiency, and less susceptibility to bacterial resistance. However, silver has strong cytotoxicity, which can cause inflammatory reactions and oxidative stress, thereby destroying tissue regeneration, making the application of silver-containing biomaterials extremely challenging. In this paper, the application of silver in biomaterials is reviewed, focusing on the following three issues: 1) how to ensure the excellent antibacterial properties of silver, and not easy to cause bacterial resistance; 2) how to choose the appropriate method to combine silver with biomaterials; 3) how to make silver-containing biomaterials in hard tissue implants have further research. Following a brief introduction, the discussion focuses on the application of silver-containing biomaterials, with an emphasis on the effects of silver on the physicochemical properties, structural properties, and biological properties of biomaterials. Finally, the review concludes with the authors' perspectives on the challenges and future directions of silver in commercialization and in-depth research.

Antibacterial performance of a porous Cu-bearing titanium alloy by laser additive manufacturing

Porphyromonas gingivalis (P. gingivalis) is the most common species that causes peri-implantitis. It forms an irreversible dense biofilm and causes inflammation. A novel 3D-printed porous TC4-6Cu alloy was fabricated using selective laser melting (SLM) technology for the dental implant, which is anticipated to inhibit biofilm formation. We attempted to investigate the antibacterial ability and antibacterial mechanism of the 3D-printed porous TC4-6Cu alloy against P. gingivalis. This work used scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and laser confocal microscopy (CLSM) to detect the antimicrobial ability of the alloy against sessile P. gingivalis. The results indicated that the 3D-printed porous TC4-6Cu alloy could cause bacterial fragmentation and deformation. Plate antimicrobial counting experiments showed that the antibacterial rates of the alloy against adherent bacteria and planktonic bacteria after 24 h were 98.05% and 73.92%, respectively. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of Cu2+ were tested to appraise the antibacterial property of the alloy against planktonic P. gingivalis. The relationship between the antibacterial mechanism of the alloy with oxidative stress was evaluated through ROS fluorescence intensity and protein leakage concentration. The results revealed that the alloy significantly eliminated adherent bacteria and inhibited biofilm formation. Moreover, 3D-printed porous TC4-6Cu alloy demonstrated significant bactericidal ability by inducing the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which could result in protein leakage from the bacterial cell membrane. This research may open a new perspective on the development and biomedical applications for dental implantation.

In Vitro Evaluation of Ag- and Sr-Doped Hydroxyapatite Coatings for Medical Applications

Osseointegration plays the most important role in the success of an implant. One of the applications of hydroxyapatite (HAp) is as a coating for metallic implants due to its bioactive nature, which improves osteoconduction. The purpose of this research was to assess the in vitro behavior of HAp undoped and doped with Ag and/or Sr obtained by galvanostatic pulsed electrochemical deposition. The coatings were investigated in terms of chemical bonds, contact angle and surface free energy, electrochemical behavior, in vitro biomineralization in acellular media (SBF and PBS), and biocompatibility with preosteoblasts cells (MC3T3-E1 cell line). The obtained results highlighted the beneficial impact of Ag and/or Sr on the HAp. The FTIR spectra confirmed the presence of hydroxyapatite within all coatings, while in terms of wettability, the contact angle and surface free energy investigations showed that all surfaces were hydrophilic. The in vitro behavior of MC3T3-E1 indicated that the presence of Sr in the HAp coatings as a unique doping agent or in combination with Ag elicited improved cytocompatibility in terms of cell proliferation and osteogenic differentiation. Therefore, the composite HAp-based coatings showed promising potential for bone regeneration applications.

Surface functionalized nanoparticles: A boon to biomedical science

The rapid development of nanomedicine has increased the likelihood that manufactured nanoparticles will one day come into contact with people and the environment. A variety of academic fields, including engineering and the health sciences, have taken a keen interest in the development of nanotechnology. Any significant development in nanomaterial-based applications would depend on the production of functionalized nanoparticles, which are believed to have the potential to be used in fields like pharmaceutical and biomedical sciences. The functionalization of nanoparticles with particular recognition chemical moieties does result in multifunctional nanoparticles with greater efficacy while at the same time minimising adverse effects, according to early clinical studies. This is because of traits like aggressive cellular uptake and focused localization in tumours. To advance this field of inquiry, chemical procedures must be developed that reliably attach chemical moieties to nanoparticles. The structure-function relationship of these functionalized nanoparticles has been extensively studied as a result of the discovery of several chemical processes for the synthesis of functionalized nanoparticles specifically for drug delivery, cancer therapy, diagnostics, tissue engineering, and molecular biology. Because of the growing understanding of how to functionalize nanoparticles and the continued work of innovative scientists to expand this technology, it is anticipated that functionalized nanoparticles will play an important role in the aforementioned domains. As a result, the goal of this study is to familiarise readers with nanoparticles, to explain functionalization techniques that have already been developed, and to examine potential applications for nanoparticles in the biomedical sciences. This review's information is essential for the safe and broad use of functionalized nanoparticles, particularly in the biomedical sector.

In vitro release of silver ions and expression of osteogenic genes by MC3T3-E1 cell line cultured on nano-hydroxyapatite and silver/strontium-coated titanium plates

Attempts are ongoing to improve the surface properties of dental implants by application of different coatings, aiming to enhance osseointegration, and decrease the adverse effects of titanium and its alloys used in dental implants. Coating of implant surface with hydroxyapatite (HA) is one suggested strategy for this purpose due to its high biocompatibility and similar structure to the adjacent bone. This study aimed to quantify the release of silver ions and expression of osteogenic genes by MC3T3-E1 cells cultured on nano-HA and silver/strontium (Ag/Sr)-coated titanium plates via the electrochemical deposition method. Plates measuring 10 × 10 × 0.9 mm were fabricated from Ti-6Al-4 V alloy, and polished with silicon carbide abrasive papers before electrochemical deposition to create a smooth, mirror-like surface. After applying homogenous nano-HA coatings with/without silver/strontium on the surface of the plates, the composition of coatings was confirmed by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and their morphological properties were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The coated specimens were then immersed in simulated body fluid (SBF), and the concentration of released sliver ions was quantified by spectroscopy at 7-14 days. The MC3T3-E1 osteoblastic cell line was cultured in osteogenic medium for 7-14 days, and after RNA extraction and cDNA synthesis, the expression of runt-related transcription factor 2 (RUNX2), osteocalcin (OCN), and osteopontin (OPN); osteogenic genes was quantified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using SYBR Green Master Mix kit. The expression of genes and the released amount of silver ions were compared between the two groups using the Mann-Whitney U test. The two groups were not significantly different regarding silver ion release at 14 days (P > 0.05). However, silver ion release was significantly higher from nano-HA coatings with silver/strontium at 7 days (P = 0.03). The difference in expression of RUNX2 (P = 0.04), OPN (P = 0.04), and OCN (P = 0.03) genes was also significant between nano-HA coating groups with and without silver/strontium at 7 days, and the expressions were higher in nano-HA with silver/strontium group, but this difference was not significant at 14 days. Addition of silver and strontium to specimens coated with nano-HA increased the release of silver ions within the non-toxic range, and enhanced the expression of osteogenic genes particularly after 7 days.

Biomaterial-assisted tumor therapy: A brief review of hydroxyapatite nanoparticles and its composites used in bone tumors therapy

Malignant bone tumors can inflict significant damage to affected bones, leaving patients to contend with issues like residual tumor cells, bone defects, and bacterial infections post-surgery. However, hydroxyapatite nanoparticles (nHAp), the principal inorganic constituent of natural bone, possess numerous advantages such as high biocompatibility, bone conduction ability, and a large surface area. Moreover, nHAp's nanoscale particle size enables it to impede the growth of various tumor cells via diverse pathways. This article presents a comprehensive review of relevant literature spanning the past 2 decades concerning nHAp and bone tumors. The primary goal is to explore the mechanisms responsible for nHAp's ability to hinder tumor initiation and progression, as well as to investigate the potential of integrating other drugs and components for bone tumor diagnosis and treatment. Lastly, the article discusses future prospects for the development of hydroxyapatite materials as a promising modality for tumor therapy.

In Vivo Evaluation of the Effects of B-Doped Strontium Apatite Nanoparticles Produced by Hydrothermal Method on Bone Repair

In the present study, the structural, morphological, and in vivo biocompatibility of un-doped and boron (B)-doped strontium apatite (SrAp) nanoparticles were investigated. Biomaterials were fabricated using the hydrothermal process. The structural and morphological characterizations of the fabricated nanoparticles were performed by XRD, FT-IR, FE-SEM, and EDX. Their biocompatibility was investigated by placing them in defects in rat tibiae in vivo. The un-doped and B-doped SrAp nanoparticles were successfully fabricated. The produced nanoparticles were in the shape of nano-rods, and the dimensions of the nano-rods decreased as the B ratio increased. It was observed that the structural and morphological properties of strontium apatite nanoparticles were affected by the contribution of B. A stoichiometric Sr/P ratio of 1.67 was reached in the 5% B-doped sample (1.68). The average crystallite sizes were 34.94 nm, 39.70 nm, 44.93 nm, and 48.23 nm in un-doped, 1% B-doped, 5% B-doped, and 10% B-doped samples, respectively. The results of the in vivo experiment revealed that the new bone formation and osteoblast density were higher in the groups with SrAp nanoparticles doped with different concentrations of B than in the control group, in which the open defects were untreated. It was observed that this biocompatibility and the new bone formation were especially elevated in the B groups, which added high levels of strontium were added. The osteoblast density was higher in the group in which the strontium element was placed in the opened bone defect compared with the control group. However, although new bone formation was slightly higher in the strontium group than in the control group, the difference was not statistically significant. Furthermore, the strontium group had the highest amount of fibrotic tissue formation. The produced nanoparticles can be used in dental and orthopedic applications as biomaterials.

Nanotechnology in the Diagnosis and Treatment of Osteomyelitis

Infection remains one of the largest threats to global health. Among those infections that are especially troublesome, osteomyelitis, or inflammation of the bone, typically due to infection, is a particularly difficult condition to diagnose and treat. This difficulty stems not only from the biological complexities of opportunistic infections designed to avoid the onslaught of both the host immune system as well as exogenous antibiotics, but also from changes in the host vasculature and the heterogeneity of infectious presentations. While several groups have attempted to classify and stage osteomyelitis, controversy remains, often delaying diagnosis and treatment. Despite a host of preclinical treatment advances being incubated in academic and company research and development labs worldwide, clinical treatment strategies remain relatively stagnant, including surgical debridement and lengthy courses of intravenous antibiotics, both of which may compromise the overall health of the bone and the patient. This manuscript reviews the current methods for diagnosing and treating osteomyelitis and then contemplates the role that nanotechnology might play in the advancement of osteomyelitis treatment.

Effect of Doping Element and Electrolyte’s pH on the Properties of Hydroxyapatite Coatings Obtained by Pulsed Galvanostatic Technique

Hydroxyapatite (HAp) is the most widely used calcium phosphate as a coating on metal implants due to its biocompatibility and bioactivity. The aim of this research is to evaluate the effect of the pH’s electrolyte and doping element on the morphology, roughness, chemical, and phasic composition of hydroxyapatite-based coatings obtained by pulsed galvanostatic electrochemical deposition. As doping elements, both Sr and Ag were selected due to their good osseoinductive character and antibacterial effect, respectively. The electrolytes were prepared at pH 4 and 5, in which specific concentrations of Sr, Ag, and Sr + Ag were added. In terms of morphology, all coatings consist in ribbon-like crystals, which at pH 5 appear to be a little larger. Addition of Sr did not affect the morphology of HAp, while Ag addition has led to the formation of flower-like crystals agglomeration. When both doping elements were added, the flowers like agglomerations caused by the Ag have diminished, indicating the competition between Sr and Ag. X-Ray Diffraction analysis has highlighted that Sr and/or Ag have successfully substituted the Ca in the HAp structure. Moreover, at higher pH, the crystallinity of all HAp coatings was enhanced. Thus, it can be said that the electrolyte’s pH enhances to some extent the properties of HAp-based coatings, while the addition of Sr and/or Ag does not negatively impact the obtained features of HAp, indicating that by using pulsed galvanostatic electrochemical deposition, materials with tunable features dictated by the function of the coated medical device can be designed.

Causes and Preventive Measures of Sports Injuries in Physical Fitness Tests in Colleges and Universities Based on Biological Characteristics

Biological characteristics refer to the morphological and physiological characteristics exhibited by individual organisms. The indicators of individual biological characteristics mainly include physical indicators such as height, weight, chest circumference, and health-related physical indicators such as blood pressure, grip strength, and vital capacity. This article mainly introduces the cause analysis and preventive measures of a physical fitness test in colleges and universities based on biological characteristics and intends to provide ideas and directions for the cause analysis and preventive measures of a physical fitness test in colleges and universities. This paper proposes a research method for the cause analysis and preventive measures of sports injuries in college physical fitness tests based on biological characteristics. Research experiments on the cause analysis and preventive measures of sports injuries in the physical fitness test of colleges and universities. The experimental results in this paper show that the most frequent cause of sports injuries among boys is lack of self-protection awareness, with a probability of 24.24%; among girls, the most frequent cause of sports injuries is insufficient flexibility, with a probability of 22.86%.

Antimicrobial Properties of Strontium Functionalized Titanium Surfaces for Oral Applications, A Systematic Review

The aim of this systematic review was to assess the current scientific evidence of the antimicrobial potential of strontium (Sr) when used to functionalize titanium (Ti) for oral applications. Out of an initial list of 1081 potentially relevant publications identified in three electronic databases (MEDLINE via PubMed, Scopus, and Cochrane) up to 1 February 2021, nine publications based on in vitro studies met the inclusion criteria. The antimicrobial potential of Sr was investigated on different types of functionalized Ti substrates, employing different application methods. Nine studies reported on the early, i.e., 6–24 h, and two studies on the late, i.e., 7–28 days, antimicrobial effect of Sr, primarily against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and/or Escherichia coli (E. coli). Sr-modified samples demonstrated relevant early antimicrobial potential against S. aureus in three studies; only one of which presented statistical significance values, while the other two presented only the percentage of antimicrobial rate and biofilm inhibition. A relevant late biofilm inhibition potential against S. aureus of 40% and 10%—after 7 and 14 days, respectively—was reported in one study. Combining Sr with other metal ions, i.e., silver (Ag), zinc (Zn), and fluorine (F), demonstrated a significant antimicrobial effect and biofilm inhibition against both S. aureus and E. coli. Sr ion release within the first 24 h was generally low, i.e., below 50 µg/L and 0.6 ppm; however, sustained Sr ion release for up to 30 days, while maintaining up to 90% of its original content, was also demonstrated. Thus, in most studies included herein, Sr-functionalized Ti showed a limited immediate (i.e., 24 h) antimicrobial effect, likely due to a low Sr ion release; however, with an adequate Sr ion release, a relevant antimicrobial effect, as well as a biofilm inhibition potential against S. aureus—but not E. coli—was observed at both early and late timepoints. Future studies should assess the antimicrobial potential of Ti functionalized with Sr against multispecies biofilms associated with peri-implantitis.

Drug-Releasing Antibacterial Coating Made from Nano-Hydroxyapatite Using the Sonocoating Method

Medical implant use is associated with a risk of infection caused by bacteria on their surface. Implants with a surface that has both bone growth-promoting properties and antibacterial properties are of interest in orthopedics. In the current study, we fabricated a bioactive coating of hydroxyapatite nanoparticles on polyether ether ketone (PEEK) using the sonocoating method. The sonocoating method creates a layer by immersing the object in a suspension of nanoparticles in water and applying a high-power ultrasound. We show that the simple layer fabrication method results in a well-adhering layer with a thickness of 219 nm to 764 nm. Dropping cefuroxime sodium salt (Cef) antibiotic on the coated substrate creates a layer with a drug release effect and antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus. We achieved a concentration of up to 1 mg of drug per cm² of the coated substrate. In drug release tests, an initial burst was observed within 24 h, accompanied by a linear stable release effect. The drug-loaded implants exhibited sufficient activity against S. aureus for 24 and 168 h. Thus, the simple method we present here produces a biocompatible coating that can be soaked with antibiotics for antibacterial properties and can be used for a range of medical implants.

Innovative Surface Modification Procedures to Achieve Micro/Nano-Graded Ti-Based Biomedical Alloys and Implants

Due to the growing aging population of the world, and as a result of the increasing need for dental implants and prostheses, the use of titanium and its alloys as implant materials has spread rapidly. Although titanium and its alloys are considered the best metallic materials for biomedical applications, the need for innovative technologies is necessary due to the sensitivity of medical applications and to eliminate any potentially harmful reactions, enhancing the implant-to-bone integration and preventing infection. In this regard, the implant’s surface as the substrate for any reaction is of crucial importance, and it is accurately addressed in this review paper. For constructing this review paper, an internet search was performed on the web of science with these keywords: surface modification techniques, titanium implant, biomedical applications, surface functionalization, etc. Numerous recent papers about titanium and its alloys were selected and reviewed, except for the section on forthcoming modern implants, in which extended research was performed. This review paper aimed to briefly introduce the necessary surface characteristics for biomedical applications and the numerous surface treatment techniques. Specific emphasis was given to micro/nano-structured topographies, biocompatibility, osteogenesis, and bactericidal effects. Additionally, gradient, multi-scale, and hierarchical surfaces with multifunctional properties were discussed. Finally, special attention was paid to modern implants and forthcoming surface modification strategies such as four-dimensional printing, metamaterials, and metasurfaces. This review paper, including traditional and novel surface modification strategies, will pave the way toward designing the next generation of more efficient implants.

The Influence of Nanometals, Dispersed in the Electrophoretic Nanohydroxyapatite Coatings on the Ti13Zr13Nb Alloy, on Their Morphology and Mechanical Properties

In this work, nanohydroxyapatite coatings with nanosilver and nanocopper have been fabricated and studied. The presented results concern coatings with a chemical composition that has never been proposed before. The present research aims to characterize the effects of nanosilver and nanocopper, dispersed in nanohydroxyapatite coatings and deposited on a new, non-toxic Ti13Zr13Nb alloy, on the physical and mechanical properties of coatings. The coatings were obtained by a one-stage electrophoretic process. The surface topography, and the chemical and phase compositions of coatings were examined with scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, X-ray diffractometry, glow discharge optical emission spectroscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The mechanical properties of coatings were determined by nanoindentation tests, while coatings adhesion was determined by nanoscratch tests. The results demonstrate that copper addition increases the hardness and adhesion. The presence of nanosilver has no significant influence on the adhesion of coatings.

The Chemical and Biological Properties of Nanohydroxyapatite Coatings with Antibacterial Nanometals, Obtained in the Electrophoretic Process on the Ti13Zr13Nb Alloy

The risk of an early inflammation after implantation surgery of titanium implants has caused the development of different antimicrobial measures. The present research is aimed at characterizing the effects of nanosilver and nanocopper dispersed in the nanohydroxyapatite coatings, deposited on the Ti13Zr13Nb alloy, and on the chemical and biological properties of the coatings. The one-stage deposition process was performed by the electrophoretic method at different contents of nanomaterials in suspension. The surface topography of the coatings was examined with scanning electron microscopy. The wettability was expressed as the water contact angle. The corrosion behavior was characterized by the potentiodynamic technique. The release rate of copper and silver into the simulated body fluid was investigated by atomic absorption spectrometry. The antibacterial efficiency was evaluated as the survivability and adhesion of the bacteria and the growth of the biofilm. The cytotoxicity was assessed for osteoblasts. The results demonstrate that silver and copper increase the corrosion resistance and hydrophilicity. Both elements together effectively kill bacteria and inhibit biofilm growth but appear to be toxic for osteoblasts. The obtained results show that the nanohydroxyapatite coatings doped with nanosilver and nanocopper in a one-stage electrophoretic process can be valuable for antibacterial coatings.

Morphological, Chemical, and Biological Investigation of Ionic Substituted, Pulse Current Deposited Calcium Phosphate Coatings

Ionic substituted calcium phosphate coatings (iCP) have been prepared by the electrochemical pulse current deposition technique with an alternate pulse on and off time of 5 ms onto a titanium alloy substrate. The elemental distribution and morphology of the deposited layers have been extensively studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The crystallinity and phase structure of iCPs have been investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The corrosion characteristics and biodegradability of coatings have been determined by electrochemical measurements, recording potentiodynamic curves in a physiological solution over a long-term immersion period. The cell viability tests confirmed that the iCP coating was biocompatible, while the corrosion tests proved its biodegradable characteristic. In our paper, we compare the morphological, chemical, and biological characteristics of silver and zinc substituted calcium phosphate layers deposited by the electrochemical method.

In vitro study of antibacterial and osteogenic activity of titanium metal releasing strontium and silver ions

Peri-prosthetic infection and loosening of implants are major problems in orthopaedic and dental surgery. To address these issues, surface treatment methods for titanium implants have been improved by modifying the alkali and heat treatment. We have previously fabricated calcium-treated Ti metal that releases Sr ions (CaSr-Ti), which resulted in a higher in vitro osteogenic response and early in vivo bone bonding.Further, we developed a Ti metal that released both Sr and Ag ions (CaSrAg-Ti). In this study, we evaluated the antibacterial ability and osteogenic cellular response of CaSrAg-Ti and CaSr-Ti in vitro using rat bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs) cultured on implant samples and extract mediums (EMs) made by immersing the implant samples in the medium. CaSrAg-Ti did not show cytotoxicity and was associated with a slightly higher osteogenic response when compared to CaSr-Ti, without inhibiting the effect of Sr. The osteogenic response was also observed in the cells cultured with the CaSrAg-Ti EM; however, the response was not as high as that of the cells on the CaSrAg-Ti implant sample. Significantly higher antibacterial activity was observed along with an antibacterial efficacy of more than 95% against methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. The main advantages of our surface treatment are its simplicity and low cost. Therefore, our treatment is promising for clinical applications in orthopaedic or dental Ti-based implants with antibacterial and early bone-bonding abilities.

Fabrication and Characterization of Ag-Sr-Substituted Hydroxyapatite/Chitosan Coatings Deposited via Electrophoretic Deposition: A Design of Experiment Study

In this study, silver-strontium-doped hydroxyapatite (AgSr-HA)/chitosan composite coatings were deposited on a 316L stainless steel (SS) substrate via electrophoretic deposition (EPD). The Taguchi design of experiment (DoE) approach was used to optimize the EPD parameters such as the applied voltage, interelectrode spacing, and deposition time. Furthermore, the concentration of AgSr-HA particles in the suspension was also optimized via the DoE approach. DoE results demonstrated that the "homogeneous" coatings were obtained at the deposition time of 7 min, deposition voltage of 20 V, and at a concentration of 5 g/L AgSr-HA particles in the suspension. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), antibacterial studies, contact angle, and roughness measurements were performed to characterize the optimized coatings. SEM images confirmed the deposition of chitosan/AgSr-HA on the SS substrate. The wettability studies indicated the hydrophilic nature of the chitosan/AgSr-HA composite coatings, which confirmed that the developed coatings are suitable for biomedical applications, e.g., orthopedics. The average surface roughness of the chitosan/AgSr-HA composite coatings was in a suitable range used to attach the bone marrow stromal cells. Chitosan/AgSr-HA composite coatings showed an effective antibacterial effect against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Moreover, the coatings developed apatite crystals on their surface upon immersion in simulated body fluid.

Advances in Antibacterial Functionalized Coatings on Mg and Its Alloys for Medical Use—A Review

As a revolutionary implant material, magnesium and its alloys have many exciting performances, such as biodegradability, mechanical compatibility, and excellent biosecurity. However, the rapid and uncontrollable degradation rate of magnesium greatly hampers its clinical use. Many efforts have been taken to enhance the corrosion resistance of magnesium. However, it must be noted that improving the corrosion resistance of magnesium will lead to the compromise of its antibacterial abilities, which are attribute and proportional to the alkaline pH during its degradation. Providing antibacterial functionalized coating is one of the best methods for balancing the degradation rate and the antibacterial ability of magnesium. Antibacterial functionalized magnesium is especially well-suited for patients with diabetes and infected wounds. Considering the extremely complex biological environment in the human body and the demands of enhancing corrosion resistance, biocompatibility, osteogenesis, and antibacterial ability, composite coatings with combined properties of different materials may be promising. The aim of this review isto collect and compare recent studies on antibacterial functionalized coatings on magnesium and its alloys. The clinical applications of antibacterial functionalized coatings and their material characteristics, antibacterial abilities, in vitro cytocompatibility, and corrosion resistance are also discussed in detail.

Functions and applications of metallic and metallic oxide nanoparticles in orthopedic implants and scaffolds

Bone defects and diseases are devastating, and can lead to severe functional deficits or even permanent disability. Nevertheless, orthopedic implants and scaffolds can facilitate the growth of incipient bone and help us to treat bone defects and diseases. Currently, a wide range of biomaterials with distinct biocompatibility, biodegradability, porosity, and mechanical strength is used in bone-related research. However, most orthopedic implants and scaffolds have certain limitations and diverse complications, such as limited corrosion resistance, low cell proliferation, and bacterial adhesion. With recent advancements in materials science and nanotechnology, metallic and metallic oxide nanoparticles have become the subject of significant interest as they offer an ample variety of options to resolve the existing problems in the orthopedic industry. More importantly, these nanoparticles possess unique physicochemical and mechanical properties not found in conventional materials, and can be incorporated into orthopedic implants and scaffolds to enhance their antimicrobial ability, bioactive molecular delivery, mechanical strength, osteointegration, and cell labeling and imaging. However, many metallic and metallic oxide nanoparticles can also be toxic to nearby cells and tissues. This review article will discuss the applications and functions of metallic and metallic oxide nanoparticles in orthopedic implants and bone tissue engineering.

Microspheres containing biosynthesized silver nanoparticles with alginate-nano hydroxyapatite for biomedical applications

Scaffolding system plays an important role in the development of artificial bone for treatment of defective or diseased bone tissue. In the present work, we have developed microspheres (COS-Ag-Alg-HA) containing chitooligosaccharide (COS) coated silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) with alginate (Alg) and hydroxyapatite (HA) as bone graft substitutes. The developed microspheres were characterized through various analytical techniques such as UV-visible spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy with EDX and evaluated the mechanical strength by using universal testing machine. In addition to this, antimicrobial activity and biocompatibility of the developed microspheres were evaluated with pathogenic microbes and osteoblast-like cells, respectively. Results suggest that microspheres are rigid, and strong chemical interactions were observed between the materials. The size of the microspheres was ranging from 1.5 ± 0.5 to 4.0 ± 0.5 mm. Significant microbial inhibition was observed against Staphylococcus aureus, and the developed microspheres are biocompatible with osteoblast-like cells. Based on the aforementioned finding results, the developed microsphere is proposed to be a potential candidate for bone tissue repair and regeneration.

Substituted hydroxyapatite coatings of bone implants

Surface modification of orthopedic and dental implants has been demonstrated to be an effective strategy to accelerate bone healing at early implantation times. Among the different alternatives, coating implants with a layer of hydroxyapatite (HAp) is one of the most used techniques, due to its excellent biocompatibility and osteoconductive behavior. The composition and crystalline structure of HAp allow for numerous ionic substitutions that provide added value, such as antibiotic properties or osteoinduction. In this article, we will review and critically analyze the most important advances in the field of substituted hydroxyapatite coatings. In recent years substituted HAp coatings have been deposited not only on orthopedic prostheses and dental implants, but also on macroporous scaffolds, thus expanding their applications towards bone regeneration therapies. Besides, the capability of substituted HAps to immobilize proteins and growth factors by non-covalent interactions has opened new possibilities for preparing hybrid coatings that foster bone healing processes. Finally, the most important in vivo outcomes will be discussed to understand the prospects of substituted HAp coatings from a clinical point of view.

Properties of Nanohydroxyapatite Coatings Doped with Nanocopper, Obtained by Electrophoretic Deposition on Ti13Zr13Nb Alloy

Nowadays, hydroxyapatite coatings are the most common surface modification of long-term implants. These coatings are characterized by high thickness and poor adhesion to the metallic substrate. The present research is aimed at characterizing the properties of nanohydroxyapatite (nanoHAp) with the addition of copper nanoparticle (nanoCu) coatings deposited on the Ti13Zr13Nb alloy by an electrophoresis process. The deposition of coatings was carried out for various amounts of nanoCu powder and various average particle sizes. Microstructure, topography, phase, and chemical composition were examined with scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and X-ray diffraction. Corrosion properties were determined by potentiodynamic polarization technique in simulated body fluid. Nanomechanical properties were determined based on nanoindentation and scratch tests. The wettability of coatings was defined by the contact angle. It was proven that nanoHAp coatings containing nanocopper, compared to nanoHAp coatings without nanometals, demonstrated smaller number of cracks, lower thickness, and higher nanomechanical properties. The influence of the content and the average size of nanoCu on the quality of the coatings was observed. All coatings exhibited hydrophilic properties. The deposition of nanohydroxyapatite coatings doped with nanocopper may be a promising way to improve the antibacterial properties and mechanical stability of coatings.

Preparation and preliminary evaluation of bio-nanocomposites based on hydroxyapatites with antibacterial properties against anaerobic bacteria

Hexagonal nanocrystalline powders of the non-doped Ca₁₀(PO₄)₆(OH)₂ as well as activated with Ag⁺ and Eu³⁺ ions were synthesized by using different wet chemistry methods. Moreover, the obtained hydroxyapatite was loaded with Ag⁰, as well as nitroimidazole antimicrobials: metronidazole and tinidazole. The structural properties of the products were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning (SEM) and transmission (TEM) electron microscopy as well as infrared (IR) and Raman spectroscopy. The photoluminescence properties of the Eu³⁺ and Ag⁺ co-doped Ca₁₀(PO₄)₆(OH)₂ were characterized via the PL emission, excitation spectra and the luminescence decay curve. The antimicrobial activity of the obtained materials against Prevotella bivia and Parabacteroides distasonis was studied. The cytotoxicity assessment was carried out on the human osteosarcoma cell line (U2OS) as well as human red blood cells (RBC). The choice of the in vitro model was based on the fact that U2OS is a cancer cell line derived from bone tissue which is rich in apatites that play a pivotal role in the extracellular matrix formation. RBCs are the most abundant blood cells and they are used as a cell model in the study of biocompatibility of new prepared biocompounds with potential medical applications. The obtained multifunctional materials do not exhibit the haemolytic activity, therefore, they could be used as a promising antimicrobial agent and for anaerobic bacteria.

Silver Doping Mechanism in Bioceramics—From Ag+: Doped HAp to Ag°/BCP Nanocomposite

The results presented in this paper, based on the powder X-ray diffraction technique followed by Rietveld analyses, are devoted to the mechanism of silver incorporation in biphasic calcium phosphates. Results were confirmed by SEM observation. Samples were synthesized via the sol-gel route, followed by heat treatments. Two incorporation sites were highlighted: Ca2+ replacement by Ag+ into the calcium phosphates (HAp: hydroxyapatite and β-TCP: tricalcium phosphate), and the other as metallic silver Ag° nanoparticles (formed by autogenous reduction). The samples obtained were thus nanocomposites, written Ag°/BCP, composed of closely-mixed Ag° particles of about 100 nm at 400 °C (which became micrometric upon heating) and calcium phosphates, themselves substituted by Ag+ cations. Between 400 °C and 700 °C the cationic silver part was mainly located in the HAp phase of the composition Ca10-xAgx(PO4)6(OH)2-x (written Ag+: HAp). From 600 °C silver cations migrated to β-TCP to form the definite compound Ca10Ag(PO4)7 (written Ag+: TCP). Due to the melting point of Ag°, the doping element completely left our sample at temperatures above 1000 °C. In order to correctly understand the biological behavior of such material, which is potentially interesting for biomaterial applications, its complex doping mechanism should be taken into consideration for subsequent cytotoxic and bacteriologic studies.

Glancing Angle Deposition of Zn-Doped Calcium Phosphate Coatings by RF Magnetron Sputtering

Zn-substituted hydroxyapatite with antibacterial effect was used in radiofrequency (RF) magnetron deposition of calcium phosphate coating onto Ti- and Si-inclined substrates. The development of surface nanopatterns for direct bacteria killing is a growing area of research. Here, we combined two approaches for possible synergetic antibacterial effect by manufacturing a patterned surface of Zn-doped calcium phosphate using glancing angle deposition (GLAD) technique. A significant change in the coating morphology was revealed with a substrate tilt angle of 80°. It was shown that an increase in the coating crystallinity for samples deposited at a tilt angle of 80° corresponds to the formation of crystallites in the bulk structure of the thin film. The variation in the coating thickness, uniformity, and influence of sputtered species energy on Si substrates was analyzed. Coatings deposited on tilted samples exhibit higher scratch resistance. The coating micro- and nano-roughness and overall morphology depended on the tilt angle and differently affected the rough Ti and smooth Si surfaces. GLAD of complex calcium phosphate material can lead to the growth of thin films with significantly changed morphological features and can be utilized to create self-organized nanostructures on various types of surfaces.

Multifunctional Coatings and Nanotopographies: Toward Cell Instructive and Antibacterial Implants

In biomaterials science, it is nowadays well accepted that improving the biointegration of dental and orthopedic implants with surrounding tissues is a major goal. However, implant surfaces that support osteointegration may also favor colonization of bacterial cells. Infection of biomaterials and subsequent biofilm formation can have devastating effects and reduce patient quality of life, representing an emerging concern in healthcare. Conversely, efforts toward inhibiting bacterial colonization may impair biomaterial-tissue integration. Therefore, to improve the long-term success of medical implants, biomaterial surfaces should ideally discourage the attachment of bacteria without affecting eukaryotic cell functions. However, most current strategies seldom investigate a combined goal. This work reviews recent strategies of surface modification to simultaneously address implant biointegration while mitigating bacterial infections. To this end, two emerging solutions are considered, multifunctional chemical coatings and nanotopographical features.

Cationic Substitutions in Hydroxyapatite: Current Status of the Derived Biofunctional Effects and Their In Vitro Interrogation Methods

High-performance bioceramics are required for preventing failure and prolonging the life-time of bone grafting scaffolds and osseous implants. The proper identification and development of materials with extended functionalities addressing socio-economic needs and health problems constitute important and critical steps at the heart of clinical research. Recent findings in the realm of ion-substituted hydroxyapatite (HA) could pave the road towards significant developments in biomedicine, with an emphasis on a new generation of orthopaedic and dentistry applications, since such bioceramics are able to mimic the structural, compositional and mechanical properties of the bone mineral phase. In fact, the fascinating ability of the HA crystalline lattice to allow for the substitution of calcium ions with a plethora of cationic species has been widely explored in the recent period, with consequent modifications of its physical and chemical features, as well as its functional mechanical and in vitro and in vivo biological performance. A comprehensive inventory of the progresses achieved so far is both opportune and of paramount importance, in order to not only gather and summarize information, but to also allow fellow researchers to compare with ease and filter the best solutions for the cation substitution of HA-based materials and enable the development of multi-functional biomedical designs. The review surveys preparation and synthesis methods, pinpoints all the explored cation dopants, and discloses the full application range of substituted HA. Special attention is dedicated to the antimicrobial efficiency spectrum and cytotoxic trade-off concentration values for various cell lines, highlighting new prophylactic routes for the prevention of implant failure. Importantly, the current in vitro biological tests (widely employed to unveil the biological performance of HA-based materials), and their ability to mimic the in vivo biological interactions, are also critically assessed. Future perspectives are discussed, and a series of recommendations are underlined.

A critical review of multifunctional titanium surfaces: New frontiers for improving osseointegration and host response, avoiding bacteria contamination

Evolution of metal implants progressively shifted the focus from adequate mechanical strength to improved biocompatibility and absence of toxicity and, finally, to fast osseointegration. Recently, new frontiers and challenges of Ti implants have been addressed to improvement of bioactivity, fighting of bacterial infection and biofilm formation, as well as modulation of inflammation. This is closely related to the clinical demand of multifunctional implants able to simultaneously have a number of specific responses with respect to body fluids, cells (osteoblasts, fibroblasts, macrophages) and pathogenic agents (bacteria, viruses). This complex system of multiple biological stimuli and surface responses is a major arena of the current research on biomaterials and biosurfaces. This review covers the strategies explored to this purpose since 2010 in the case of Ti and Ti alloys, considering that the number of related papers doubled about in the last seven years and no review has comprehensively covered this engaging research area yet. The different approaches followed for producing multifunctional Ti-based surfaces involve the use of thick and thin inorganic coatings, chemical surface treatments, and functionalization strategies coupled with organic coatings.

STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE

According to the clinical demand of multifunctional implants able to simultaneously have a number of specific responses with respect to body fluids, cells and pathogenic agents, new frontiers of Ti implants have been addressed to improvement of bioactivity, fighting of bacterial infection and biofilm formation, as well as modulation of inflammation. Literature since 2010 is here reviewed. Several strategies for getting bioactive and antibacterial actions on Ti surfaces have been suggested, but they still need to be optimized with respect to several concerns. A further step will be to combine on the same surface a proven ability of modulation of inflammatory response. The achievement of multifunctional surfaces able to modulate inflammation and to promote osteogenesis is a grand challenge.

Surface grafting of rare-earth ions doped hydroxyapatite nanorods (HAp:Ln(Eu/Tb)) with hydrophilic copolymers based on ligand exchange reaction: Biological imaging and cancer treatment

Rare-earth ions doped hydroxyapatite nanoparticles (HAp:Ln NPs) have demonstrated to be very promising candidates for biological imaging applications owing to their small size and chemical compositions similar to bone. However, these HAp:Ln NPs with controllable size and morphology should be prepared under hydrothermal treatment with hydrophobic molecules as the protective layers. The hydrophobic nature of these luminescent HAp:Ln NPs largely impeded their applications in biomedical fields. In this study, a novel and effective strategy has been developed for the surface modification of HAp:Ln nanorods through the combination of surface ligand exchange reaction and reversible-addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization using 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC) and itaconic acid (IA) as the monomers. Herein, a small molecule adenosine 5'-monophosphate disodium salt (AMP) that contains a phosphate group and two hydroxyl groups was used to displace the hydrophobic oleic acid on pristine HAp NPs through surface ligand exchange reaction owing to its stronger interaction with HAp NPs. On the other hand, the MPC and IA were introduced on HAp NPs through RAFT polymerization after the chain transfer agent was immobilized on the HAp NPs through the esterification reaction. The poly(IA-MPC) could not only endow the high water dispersibility but also be used for loading anticancer agent cisplatin (CDDP) through coordination interaction. To evaluate their potential biomedical applications, the cell uptake behavior, drug loading capacity and release behavior as well as cell viability of HAp:Ln-AMP-poly(IA-MPC) polymeric composites were examined. We demonstrated that the method developed in this work is very effective for introduction of functional polymers onto HAp:Ln nanorods. The HAp:Ln-AMP-poly(IA-MPC) composites are promising for cell imaging and controlled delivery of CDDP.

Nanostructured Ag+-substituted fluorhydroxyapatite-TiO2 coatings for enhanced bactericidal effects and osteoinductivity of Ti for biomedical applications

Background

Poor mechanical properties, undesirable fast dissolution rate, and lack of antibacterial activity limit the application of hydroxyapatite (HA) as an implant coating material. To overcome these limitations, a hybrid coating of Ag⁺-substituted fluorhydroxyapatite and titania nanotube (TNT) was prepared.

Methods

The incorporation of silver into the HA-TiO₂ hybrid coating improves its antimicrobial properties. The addition of F as a second binary element increases the structural stability of the coating. The TNT/F-and-Ag-substituted HA (FAgHA) bilayer coating on the Ti substrate was confirmed by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS).

Results

The results indicate that the FAgHA/TNT nanocomposite coating has a dense and uniform morphology with a nano-rod-like structure. The solubility measurement result shows that the substitution of F⁻ ions into the AgHA structure has a positive effect on the dissolution resistance of HA. The adhesion strength of FAgHA/TNT has significantly increased because of the interlocking of the roughened surface with nano-rod-like particles that entered into the voids of the TiO₂ nanotubes. Compared with that of the bare Ti, the corrosion current density of FAgHA/TNT-coated Ti substrate decreased from 3.71 to 0.18 μA, and its corrosion resistance increased by almost two orders of magnitude. Moreover, despite pure HA, the FAgHA killed all viable Staphylococcus aureus after 24 hours of incubation. Although the fabricated FAgHA/TNT coating is hydrophobic, it induced deposition of the typical spherical apatite when immersed in a simulated body fluid (SBF); the osteoblasts spread very well on the surface of the coating. In addition, in vitro cell culture tests demonstrated cell viability and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) similar to pure HA, which indicated good cytocompatibility. Interestingly, compared with bare Ti, FAgHA/TNT-coated Ti surface was innocent for cell vitality and even more beneficial for cell osteogenesis in vitro.

Conclusion

Enhancing the osseointegration and preventing infection in implants, the FAgHA/TNT-coated Ti makes implants more successful.

Design of a Multifunctional Nanoengineered PLLA Surface by Maximizing the Synergies between Biochemical and Surface Design Bactericidal Effects

Nanotechnology, the manipulation of matter on atomic, molecular, and supramolecular scales, has become the most appealing strategy for biomedical applications and is of great interest as an approach to preventing microbial risks. In this study, we utilize the antimicrobial performance and the drug-loading ability of novel nanoparticles based on silicon oxide and strontium-substituted hydroxyapatite to develop nanocomposite antimicrobial films based on a poly(l-lactic acid) (PLLA) polymer. We also demonstrate that nanoimprint lithography (NIL), a process adaptable to industrial application, is a feasible fabrication technique to modify the surface of PLLA, to alter its physical properties, and to utilize it for antibacterial applications. Various nanocomposite PLLA films with nanosized (black silicon) and three-dimensional (hierarchical) hybrid domains were fabricated by thermal NIL, and their bactericidal activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus was assessed. Our findings demonstrate that besides hydrophobicity the nanoparticle antibiotic delivery and the surface roughness are essential factors that affect the biofilm formation.

Corrosion and biocompatibility examination of multi-element modified calcium phosphate bioceramic layers

Multi-ions doped bioactive calcium phosphate (dCaP) layers were developed by pulse current deposition onto surgical grade titanium alloy material (Ti6Al4V). The coatings were electrodeposited from base electrolyte containing adequate amounts of calcium nitrate and ammonium dihydrogen phosphate at 70 °C. After electrodeposition, the pure CaP layers were doped with different ions that possess bioactive and antimicrobial properties, such as Zn²⁺, Mg²⁺, Sr²⁺ and Ag⁺ ions. The morphology and structure of coatings were characterized by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Energy-dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDX) as well as XRD and FT-IR measurements. The results revealed the pulse current deposited and surface post-treated CaP layer to be mainly in hydroxyapatite phase. The corrosion properties of bioceramic coatings were assessed in conventional simulated body fluid (SBF) in a three electrode open cell by using potentiodynamic polarization measurements over two weeks period. The electrochemical results revealed that the pure calcium phosphate (CaP) coated implant material and the bare implant possess the highest resistivity to corrosion, while the modified calcium phosphate coating showed lower corrosion resistance by at least one order of magnitude. The cell viability measurements showed that the electrochemically deposited CaP layer was biocompatible.

Facile hydrothermal synthesis of antibacterial multi-layered hydroxyapatite nanostructures with superior flexibility

The synthesis of silver-doped multi-layered hydroxyapatite nanobelts is of great importance due to their being a potential candidate to curb the infections associated with HA implants along with their advantage as a reinforcement in biomaterials.

Synthesis of irregular graphene oxide tubes using green chemistry and their potential use as reinforcement materials for biomedical applications

Micrometer length tubes of graphene oxide (GO) with irregular form were synthesised following facile and green metal complexation reactions. These materials were obtained by crosslinking of GO with calcium, zinc or strontium chlorides at three different temperatures (24, 34 and 55°C) using distilled water as solvent for the compounds and following a remarkably simple and low-cost synthetic method, which employs no hazardous substances and is conducted without consumption of thermal or sonic energy. These irregular continuous GO networks showed a very particular interconnected structure by Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy-Disperse X-Ray Spectroscopy for elemental analysis and High-resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy with Scanning Transmission Electron Microscope Dark Field Imaging, and were analysed by Raman Spectroscopy. To demonstrate the potential use of these 3D GO networks as reinforcement materials for biomedical applications, two composites of calcium alginate with irregular tubes of GO and with single GO nanosheets were prepared with the same amount of GO and divalent atoms and analysed. Thus, the dynamic-mechanical modulus of the composites synthesised with the 3D crosslinked GO networks showed a very significant mechanical improvement due to marked microstructural changes confirmed by confocal microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy.
