Solidification of oil liquids by encapsulation within porous hollow silica microspheres of narrow size distribution for pharmaceutical and cosmetic applications

Synthesis and Characterization of Porous Hydrophobic and Hydrophilic Silica Microcapsules for Applications in Agriculture

Silica (SiO2) particles are widely used in various industries due to their chemical inertness, thermal stability, and wear resistance. The present study describes the preparation and potential use of porous hydrophobic and hydrophilic SiO2 microcapsules (MCs) of a narrow size distribution. First, various layers of SiO2 micro/nano-particles (M/NPs) were grafted onto monodispersed polystyrene (PS) microspheres of a narrow size distribution. Hydrophobic and hydrophilic sintered SiO2 MCs were then prepared by removing the core PS from the PS/SiO2 core-shell microspheres by burning off under normal atmospheric conditions or organic solvent dissolution, respectively. We examined how the size and quantity of the SiO2 M/NPs influence the MC's properties. Additionally, we utilized two forms of hollow SiO2 MC for different applications; one form was incorporated into polymer films, and the other was free-floating. The hydrophobic microcapsules filled with 6% hydrogen peroxide were effective in killing the tomato brown rugose fruit virus (ToBRFV). The hydrophilic microcapsules filled with thymol and thin coated onto polypropylene films were successfully used to prevent mold formation for hay protection.

Hydrophobic Porous Liquids with Controlled Cavity Size and Physico-Chemical Properties

Developing greener hydrometallurgical processes implies offering alternatives to conventional solvents used for liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) of metals. In this context, it is proposed to substitute the organic phase by a hydrophobic silica-based porous liquid (PL). Two different sulfonated hollow silica particles (HSPs) are modified with various polyethoxylated fatty amines (EthAs) forming a canopy that provides both the targeted hydrophobicity and liquefying properties. This study shows that these properties can be tuned by varying the number of ethylene oxide units in the EthA: middle-range molecular weight EthAs allow obtaining a liquid at room temperature, while too short or too long EthA leads to solid particles. Viscosity is also impacted by the density and size of the silica spheres: less viscous PLs are obtained with small low-density spheres, while for larger spheres (c.a. 200 nm) the density has a less significant impact on viscosity. According to this approach, hydrophobic PLs are successfully synthesized. When contacted with an aqueous phase, the most hydrophobic PLs obtained allow a subsequent phase separation. Preliminary extraction tests on three rare earth elements have further shown that functionalization of the PL is necessary to observe metal extraction.

Nutritional Supplements for Skin Health-A Review of What Should Be Chosen and Why

Supplementation of micronutrients is considered to be crucial in the reinforcement of the skin's barrier. In this paper, 14 nutritional compounds commonly used in food or pharmaceutic industries were analyzed in terms of influencing skin conditions. The major objective of this paper was to provide a narrative review of the available literature regarding several chosen compounds that are currently widely recommended as supplements that aim to maintain proper and healthy skin conditions. We conducted a review of the literature from PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science until September 2023 without any other restrictions regarding the year of the publication. Ultimately, we reviewed 238 articles, including them in this review. Each of the reviewed compounds, including vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin D, vitamin E, curcumin, chlorella, Omega-3, biotin,Ppolypodium leucotomos, Simmondsia chinesis, gamma oryzanol, olive leaf extract, spirulina, and astaxanthin, was observed to present some possible effects with promising benefits for a skin condition, i.e., photoprotective radiation. Adding them to the diet or daily routine might have a positive influence on some skin inflammatory diseases such as atopic dermatitis or psoriasis. Further, UV radiation protection facilitated by some supplements and their impact on human cells might be helpful during chemotherapy or in preventing melanoma development. Further research is needed because of the lack of clear consensus regarding the doses of the described compounds that could provide desirable effects on the skin.

Facile engineering of mesoporous silica for the effective removal of anionic dyes from wastewater: Insights from DFT and experimental studies

The discharge of dye effluents from the textile industries has become a major environmental issue due to its potential to impart serious harm to human health and aquatic life. Mesoporous silica due to its high chemical stability, large surface area, tunable morphologies, large pore volume and pore size and cost-effectiveness is commonly used to remove such dyes before recycling of the wastewater for agricultural, domestic, and industrial applications. However, the low colloidal stability, the fast aggregation of the silica particles and the slow etching of the silica surface often results in the fast deactivation of the adsorbents and limits their long-term applications. In this study, we report the functionalization of mesoporous silica (SBA-15) with ZnO nanoparticles for the effective removal of anionic dyes. The Zn-silica exhibited highly positive surface with a dipole moment of 172 Debye and high charge transfer efficacy with an energy bandgap (ΔE) of 3.35 eV as revealed by quantum chemical DFT simulations. It achieved excellent removal of Alizarin red dye reaching a removal efficiency of 99.99 % and an adsorption capacity of 50 mg/g. In the presence of heavy metal ions commonly present in wastewater (Cd2+, Co2+, Zn2+, Ni2+, Cu2+ and Hg2+), the Zn-silica maintain excellent stability, high selectivity, and reusability within 5 cycles without a significant decline in efficiency. This study thus presents an effective way of wastewater purification on cost-effective adsorbents for meeting the water scarcity demands.

Characterization of teff straw from selected teff varieties from Ethiopia

Utilization of biomass is important both for economic and environmental projection purposes. To use biomass for industrial applications as well as to reduce its pollution load on environment, it is important to characterize and determine the compositions of the biomass. In this work, the proximate and chemical analyses of straws of four (Dagim, Filagot, Kora and Kuncho) Teff (Eragrostis tef) varieties were investigated with three replications. The thermographic and FTIR of the teff straws and the ashes were also studied. The volatile matter contents of the teff straws were 78.80, 77.00, 80.20 and 80.60% for the Dagim, Kuncho, Kora and Filagot varieties, respectively. The ash contents of the straws were 6.34% for Dagim, Kuncho and Kora while the value is 6.00% for Filagot. The fixed carbon contents of the straws were 14.86, 16.67, 13.47 and 13.40% for Dagim, Kuncho, Kora and Filagot varieties, respectively. The silica contents of the teff straw for the Filagot, Kora, Dagim, and Kuncho varieties are 5.92, 5.66, 4.94, and 4.70%, respectively. This corresponds to 92.21, 91.59, 77.19 and 87.20% silica contents in the ashes produced from Filagot, Kora, Dagim, and Kuncho varieties, respectively. The results show that the proximate and chemical composition of ash produced from teff straws show slight differences. Moreover, the silica content of the teff straw is comparable with the values reported for rice husk and wheat straw. Thus, teff straw can be used for the production of silica.

Alginate Based Core-Shell Capsules Production through Coextrusion Methods: Recent Applications

Encapsulation is used in various industries to protect active molecules and control the release of the encapsulated materials. One of the structures that can be obtained using coextrusion encapsulation methods is the core-shell capsule. This review focuses on coextrusion encapsulation applications for the preservation of oils and essential oils, probiotics, and other bioactives. This technology isolates actives from the external environment, enhances their stability, and allows their controlled release. Coextrusion offers a valuable means of preserving active molecules by reducing oxidation processes, limiting the evaporation of volatile compounds, isolating some nutrients or drugs with undesired taste, or stabilizing probiotics to increase their shelf life. Being environmentally friendly, coextrusion offers significant application opportunities for the pharmaceutical, food, and agriculture sectors.

Hollow Silica Nano and Micro Spheres with Polystyrene Templating: A Mini-Review

Synthesis of monodisperse hollow silica nanospheres, especially using a hard template route, has been shown to be successful, but a high yield is needed for this strategy to be used on an industrial scale. On the other hand, there is a research gap in the synthesis of hollow silica microspheres due to the popularity and easiness of the synthesis of silica nanospheres despite the larger spheres being beneficial in some fields. In this review, current trends in producing hollow silica nanospheres using hard templates, especially polystyrene, are briefly presented. Soft templates have also been used to make highly polydisperse hollow silica spheres, and complex designs have improved polydispersity. The effect of the main parameters on the coating is presented here to provide a basic understanding of the interactions between the silica and template surface in the absence or presence of surfactants. Surface charge, surface modification, parameters in the sol-gel method and interaction between the silica and templates need to be further improved to have a uniform coating and better control over the size, dispersity, wall thickness and porosity. As larger organic templates will have lower surface energy, the efficiency of the micro sphere synthesis needs to be improved. Control over the physical structure of hollow silica spheres will open up many opportunities for them to be extensively used in fields ranging from waste removal to energy storage.

Multifunctional Role of Silica in Pharmaceutical Formulations

Due to the high surface area, adjustable surface and pore structures, and excellent biocompatibility, nano- and micro-sized silica have certainly attracted the attention of many researchers in the medical fields. This review focuses on the multifunctional roles of silica in different pharmaceutical formulations including solid preparations, liquid drugs, and advanced drug delivery systems. For traditional solid preparations, it can improve compactibility and flowability, promote disintegration, adjust hygroscopicity, and prevent excessive adhesion. As for liquid drugs and preparations, like volatile oil, ethers, vitamins, and self-emulsifying drug delivery systems, silica with adjustable pore structures is a good adsorbent for solidification. Also, silica with various particle sizes, surface characteristics, pore structure, and surface modification controlled by different synthesis methods has gained wide attention owing to its unparalleled advantages for drug delivery and disease diagnosis. We also collate the latest pharmaceutical applications of silica sorted out by formulations. Finally, we point out the thorny issues for application and survey future trends pertaining to silica in an effort to provide a comprehensive overview of its future development in the medical fields. Microfluidic Assembly: An Innovative Tool for the Encapsulation, Protection, and Controlled Release of Nutraceuticals

Nutraceuticals have been gradually accepted as food ingredients that can offer health benefits and provide protection against several diseases. It is widely accepted due to potential nutritional benefits, safety, and therapeutic effects. Most nutraceuticals are vulnerable to the changes in the external environment, which leads to poor physical and chemical stability and absorption. Several researchers have designed various encapsulation technologies to promote the use of nutraceuticals. Microfluidic technology is an emerging approach which can be used for nutraceutical delivery with precise control. The delivery systems using microfluidic technology have obtained much interest in recent years. In this review article, we have summarized the recently introduced nutraceutical delivery platforms including emulsions, liposomes, microspheres, microgels, and polymer nanoparticles based on microfluidic techniques. Emphasis has been made to discuss the advantages, preparations, characterizations, and applications of nutraceutical delivery systems. Finally, the challenges, several up-scaling methods, and future expectations are discussed.

Encapsulating plant ingredients for dermocosmetic application: an updated review of delivery systems and characterization techniques

Today, there is a rising demand and ongoing search for novel plant-derived phytochemicals in the cosmetic market owing to the growing consumer expectations worldwide for green and natural health products. Various plant ingredients, including polyphenols, oils, volatile oils, vitamins and other herbal extracts, have been extensively used in herbal cosmetics. Recent advances in encapsulation technologies have greatly improved their chemical stability, biocompatibility, skin permeability and dermocosmetic efficiency when applied topically. This comprehensive review summarizes the up-to-date information on encapsulated plant ingredients tailored for dermocosmetic application with a focus on the development of novel delivery systems. An overview of the commonly used techniques for carrier characterization, performance-related properties and toxicological evaluation is also included, which might provide guidance for researchers to select or develop appropriate assay systems.
