Molecularly imprinted polymers and porous organic frameworks based analytical methods for disinfection by-products in water and wastewater

Disinfection by-products (DBPs) with heritage toxicity, mutagenicity and carcinogenicity are one kind of important new pollutants, and their detection and removal in water and wastewater has become a common challenge facing mankind. Advanced functional materials with ideal selectivity, adsorption capacity and regeneration capacity provide hope for the determination of DBPs with low concentration levels and inherent molecular structural similarity. Among them, molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) are favored, owing to their predictable structure, specific recognition and wide applicability. Also, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent-organic frameworks (COFs) with unique pore structure, large specific surface area and easy functionalization, attract increasing interest. Herein, we review recent advances in analytical methods based on the above-mentioned three functional materials for DBPs in water and wastewater. Firstly, MIPs, MOFs and COFs are briefly introduced. Secondly, MIPs, MOFs and COFs as extractants, recognition element and adsorbents, are comprehensively discussed. Combining the latest research progress of solid-phase extraction (SPE), sensor, adsorption and nanofiltration, typical examples on MIPs and MOFs/COFs based analytical and removal applications in water and wastewater are summarized. Finally, the application prospects and challenges of the three functional materials in DBPs analysis are proposed to promote the development of corresponding analytical methods.

Recent advances in modification of novel carbon-based composites: Synthesis, properties, and biotechnological/ biomedical applications

Nowadays, carbon-based materials owing to great interest in biomedical science/biotechnology and applied for effective diagnosis and treatment of disease. To enhance the effectiveness of carbon nanotubes (CNTs)/graphene-based materials for bio-medical science/technology applications, different kinds of surface modification/functionalization were developed for the attachment of metal oxides nanostructures, biomolecules and polymers. The attachment of pharmaceutical agents with CNTs/graphene, make it a favorable candidate in research field of bio-medical science/technology applications. Surface modified/functionalized CNTs and graphene derivatives materials integrated with pharmaceutical agents has been developed for the purpose of cancer therapy, antibacterial action, pathogens bio detection, drug and gene delivery. Surface modification or functionalization of CNT/graphene materials provides good platform for pharmaceutical agents attachment with improved surface Raman scattering, fluorescence and its quenching capability. Graphene-based biosensing and bioimaging technologies are widely applied to identify numerous trace level analytes. These fluorescent and electrochemical sensors are utilized primarily for detecting organic, inorganic, and biomolecules. In this article, we highlights and summarized overview of the current research progress concerned on the CNTs/graphene-based materials as a new generation materials for detection and treatment of diseases.

Specific nanoantibiotics for selective removal of antibiotic-resistant bacteria: New insights in bacterial imprinting based on interfacial biomimetic mineralization

Antibiotic resistance has been a worsening global concern and selective elimination of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) while retaining the co-existed beneficial bacteria has been essential in environmental protection, which having attracted considerable interest. In this work, by integrating the whole cell imprinting and epitope imprinting strategy, magnetic bacterial imprinted polymers (BIPs) towards ARB were synthesized with interfacial biomimetic mineralization followed by a screening process. The binding data showed that the BIPs owned highly specific affinity towards the target bacteria. Taking advantage of this specific binding ability of BIPs, a two-step selective antimicrobial approach was developed. Remarkably, the BIP nanoantibiotics (nAbts) could efficiently destroy ARB without harming the beneficial bacteria. In comparison with the non-bacterial imprinted polymers, the biocompatible BIP nAbts showed a 12.5-fold increase in the survival percentage for the beneficial bacteria in wastewater. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that bacterial imprinting via interfacial biomimetic mineralization was developed, and also the first report of killing ARB without harming the beneficial bacteria in wastewater. We believe that this strategy provides a new insight into the design of novel affinity materials for the selective elimination of ARB in biological treatment for environmental protection.

Graphene nanoplatelets embedded polymer: An efficient endodontic material for root canal therapy

The design and preparation of clinically relevant endodontic obturating material for root canal therapy is a great challenge. For the first time, we report a new polymer nanocomposite which was prepared by using reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer (RAFT) polymerization of methacrylic acid and methylene glycol dimethacrylate. The polymer was embedded with reduced graphene oxide nanoplatelets (rGO). These graphene nanoplatelets were embedded in the polymers (GNPs) have shown the tensile strength (27--36%) and the elongation at break 2.1 - 3.1% is quite similar to the commercial gutta percha (GP-C). Atomic force micrograph provided interesting information related to scattering of rGO flakes in GNPs and the surface of GNP contains crystalline spikes of height varied between 0.95 and 1.26 μm. These spikes improved the adhesion of GNPs to bio-interface. The GNPs were 95% more effective in inhibiting bacterial colonization without disturbing the nearby cell integrity compared to commercial GP. It was found that the GNPs after incubation of 24 h at 37 °C, the radius of the inhibition zone was 6.8 mm and 4.3 mm for E.coli and S. aureus, respectively indicating better effective antibacterial activity than the GP-C. This work offers biocompatible, better adhesive and antibacterial endodontic obturating material for future root canal therapy.

Molecular imprinting technology for sensing foodborne pathogenic bacteria

Foodborne diseases caused by bacterial pathogens pose a widespread and growing threat to public health in the world. Rapid detection of pathogenic bacteria is of great importance to prevent foodborne diseases and ensure food safety. However, traditional detection methods are time-consuming, labour intensive and expensive. In recent years, many attempts have been made to develop alternative methods for bacterial detection. Biosensors integrated with molecular imprinted polymers (MIPs) and various transducer platforms are among the most promising candidates for the detection of pathogenic bacteria in a highly sensitive, selective and ultra-rapid manner. In this review, we summarize the most recent advances in molecular imprinting for bacterial detection, introduce the underlying recognition mechanisms and highlight the applications of MIP-based biosensors. In addition, the challenges and future perspectives are discussed with the aim of accelerating the development of MIP-based biosensors and extending their applications.

Bacterial Imprinting Methods and Their Applications: An Overview

Microbial contaminations and infections are hazardous and pose crucial concerns for humans. They result in severe morbidity and mortality around the globe. Even though dish-culturing, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) exhibits accurate and reliable detection of bacteria but these methods are time-consuming, laborious, and expensive. This warrants early detection and quantification of bacteria for timely diagnosis and treatment. Bacteria imprinting ensures a solution for selective and early detection of bacteria by snagging them inside their imprinted cavities. This review provides an insight into MIPs based bacterial detection strategies, challenges, and future perspectives.
