Ultra-selective, trace level detection of As3+ ions in blood samples using PANI coated BiVO4 modified SPCE via differential pulse anode stripping voltammetry

Photoelectrochemical sensing of glutathione using bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) decorated with polyaniline (PANI) and cadmium sulfide (CdS)

A ternary nanocomposite photoelectrode composed of cadmium sulfide (CdS), polyaniline (PANI), and bismuth vanadate (BiVO₄) was successfully designed by combining cyclic voltammetry (CV) with electrochemical deposition and high-temperature calcination. The first synthesized CdS/PANI/BiVO₄ composite was used as a photoelectrochemical (PEC) monitoring platform for glutathione (GSH). The ternary CdS/PANI/BiVO₄ nanocomposites exhibited higher PEC activity, which was attributed to the accelerated electron transfer by the loading of CdS and PANI, which enables the material surface to better adsorb the electrons separated by GSH, thereby oxidizing it into GSSH. The photoanodes were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, and photoelectrochemical experiments. Under the optimal experimental conditions, the BiVO₄ electrode modified with CdS and PANI exhibited a linear response in the concentration range of 0.1-20 μM with a sensitivity of 0.669 μA mM^-1 cm^-2 and a detection limit of 40 nM. Moreover, the PEC sensor exhibits good reproducibility and long-term stability. In summary, the designed materials have excellent electrochemical properties, which make them ideal candidates for PEC detection of GSH.

A Z-scheme CdS/BiVO4 photocatalysis towards Eriochrome black T: An experimental design and mechanism study

The synergistic photocatalytic activity was obtained when CdS and BiVO₄ nanoparticles (NPs) were coupled. The samples were characterized by XRD, FTIR, SEM-EDX, and UV-DRS techniques, and their pHpzc was also estimated. The crystallite size of the coupled sample was estimated at 37.3 and 12.5 nm by the Scherrer and Williamson-Hall equations, respectively. The band gaps and the potential positions of VB and CB levels of the semiconductors used were determined. The highest boosted photocatalytic activity was obtained when the CdS: BiVO₄ mole ratio was 1:1. RSM studied the simultaneous interactions between the selected variables, and the model F-value of 110.61> F_{0.05, 14, 13} = 2.4 accompanied by the LOF F-value of 5.20 < F_{0.05, 10, 3} = 8.79 confirm the model significance. The correlation coefficients of R² = 0.9861, the adjusted R² = 0.9710, and the predicted R² = 0.9417, also establish a satisfactory model for processing the experimental data. In the scavenging agent study, photodegradation mechanisms were suggested; among them, the direct Z-scheme mechanism is more favorable for illustrating the EBT-photodegradation by the binary CdS-BiVO₄ photocatalyst. The proposed system, especially the direct Z-scheme mechanism, is suitable as a potential hydrogen production system.

Advances in Electrochemical Detection Electrodes for As(III)

Arsenic is extremely abundant in the Earth’s crust and is one of the most common environmental pollutants in nature. In the natural water environment and surface soil, arsenic exists mainly in the form of trivalent arsenite (As(III)) and pentavalent arsenate (As(V)) ions, and its toxicity can be a serious threat to human health. In order to manage the increasingly serious arsenic pollution in the living environment and maintain a healthy and beautiful ecosystem for human beings, it is urgent to conduct research on an efficient sensing method suitable for the detection of As(III) ions. Electrochemical sensing has the advantages of simple instrumentation, high sensitivity, good selectivity, portability, and the ability to be analyzed on site. This paper reviews various electrode systems developed in recent years based on nanomaterials such as noble metals, bimetals, other metals and their compounds, carbon nano, and biomolecules, with a focus on electrodes modified with noble metal and metal compound nanomaterials, and evaluates their performance for the detection of arsenic. They have great potential for achieving the rapid detection of arsenic due to their excellent sensitivity and strong interference immunity. In addition, this paper discusses the relatively rare application of silicon and its compounds as well as novel polymers in achieving arsenic detection, which provides new ideas for investigating novel nanomaterial sensing. We hope that this review will further advance the research progress of high-performance arsenic sensors based on novel nanomaterials.

Optimization of uric acid detection with Au nanorod-decorated graphene oxide (GO/AuNR) using response surface methodology

A modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) was developed based on a synthesized graphene oxide (GO) gold nanorod (AuNR) decorated composite (GO/AuNR) for sensitive electrochemical sensing of uric acid (UA). The electrochemical performance of GO/AuNR/GCE for UA detection was investigated employing the differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) technique. Central composite design (CCD) was applied to obtain the optimum composition of the GO and AuNR composite, which provide the highest possible UA oxidation peak current. The optimum composition was obtained at a GO concentration of 5 mg mL⁻¹ and AuNR volume of 10 mL. Under the optimum conditions, GO/AuNR/GCE showed acceptable analytical performance for UA detection with good linearity (concentration range of 10–90 μM) and both a low detection limit (0.4 μM) and quantitation limit (1.0 μM). Furthermore, the proposed sensor exhibits superior stability, reproducibility, and selectivity using ascorbic acid (AA), dopamine (DA), urea, glucose, and magnesium as interferents. Finally, practical use of GO/AuNR/GCE was demonstrated by successfully determining the content of UA in human urine samples with the standard addition approach.

Optimization of graphene oxide and Au Nanorod composite and application of GO/AuNR modified electrode for uric acid detection.

Detection of dopamine by a minimized electrochemical sensor using a graphene oxide molecularly imprinted polymer modified micropipette tip shaped graphite electrode

A simple and efficient electrochemical sensor based on a homemade reshaped micropipette tip carbon paste electrode is reported. Molecularly imprinted polymer membranes of graphene oxide and polypyrrole are synthesized and modified on the surface of micropipette tip carbon paste electrode. The merit of the method is evaluated under optimized conditions via differential pulse voltammetrics. The prepared sensor exhibits remarkable sensitivity toward dopamine with a linear range of 6.4 × 10−8–2 × 10−4 M, with a limit of detection as low as 1 × 10−8 M. The proposed method is applied for the determination of dopamine in urine samples by the standard addition route. A range of 1 × 10−7–1 × 10−4 M is obtained from these samples. The relative recoveries are in the range of 95.2%–104%. The proposed method has acceptable performance for the determination of dopamine in real samples with excellent sensitivity and selectivity.

Electrochemical Determination of Lead & Copper Ions Using Thiolated Calix[4]arene-Modified Screen-Printed Carbon Electrode

This study used a thiolated calix[4]arene derivative modified on gold nanoparticles and a screen-printed carbon electrode (TC4/AuNPs/SPCE) for Pb2+ and Cu2+ determination. The surface of the modified electrode was characterised via Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), cyclic voltammetry (CV), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) was used for the detection of Pb2+ and Cu2+ under optimum conditions. The limit of detection (LOD) for detecting Pb2+ and Cu2+ was 0.7982 × 10−2 ppm and 1.3358 × 10−2 ppm, respectively. Except for Zn2+ and Hg2+, the presence of competitive ions caused little effect on the current response when detecting Pb2+. However, all competitive ions caused a significant drop in the current response when detecting Cu2+, except Ca2+ and Mg2+, suggesting the sensing platform is more selective toward Pb2+ ions rather than copper (Cu2+) ions. The electrochemical sensor demonstrated good reproducibility and excellent stability with a low relative standard deviation (RSD) value in detecting lead and copper ions. Most importantly, the result obtained in the analysis of Pb2+ and Cu2+ had good recovery in river water, demonstrating the applicability of the developed sensor for real samples.

Preparation of GO/Fe3O4@PMDA/AuNPs nanocomposite for simultaneous determination of As3+ and Cu2+ by stripping voltammetry

One of the critical challenges in the simultaneous determination of As³⁺ and Cu²⁺ by stripping voltammetry is the overlapping of their oxidation peaks. Therefore, the engineering of nanostructured sensors in order to uplift their electrochemical performance is a significant issue for the codetection of As³⁺ and Cu²⁺. Herein, we modified a glassy carbon electrode with a new nanocomposite based on poly methyldopa along with gold nanoparticles immobilized on the surface of magnetic graphene oxide (GCE/GO/Fe₃O₄@PMDA/AuNPs) that can determine As³⁺ and Cu²⁺ with great sensitivity. Optimization of the measurement conditions by square wave stripping voltammetry (SWSV) caused the oxidation peaks of As³⁺ and Cu²⁺ to be distinguished significantly from each other, while the peak currents of As³⁺ and Cu²⁺ increased 9-12 fold, respectively, compared to the bare electrode. The proposed electrode exhibits low detection limits (S/N ≥ 3): 0.15 ppb for As³⁺ and 0.11 ppb for Cu²⁺. The GCE/GO/Fe₃O₄@PMDA/AuNPs also has good linearity over a wide concentration range from 5 to 500 ppb for As³⁺ and 0.5-750 ppb for Cu²⁺. The good recovery values were obtained for the analysis of As³⁺ and Cu²⁺ in pool and drinking water samples.

Electrochemical Detection of Arsenite Using a Silica Nanoparticles-Modified Screen-Printed Carbon Electrode

Arsenic poisoning in the environment can cause severe effects on human health, hence detection is crucial. An electrochemical-based portable assessment of arsenic contamination is the ability to identify arsenite (As(III)). To achieve this, a low-cost electroanalytical assay for the detection of As(III) utilizing a silica nanoparticles (SiNPs)-modified screen-printed carbon electrode (SPCE) was developed. The morphological and elemental analysis of functionalized SiNPs and a SiNPs/SPCE-modified sensor was studied using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The electrochemical responses towards arsenic detection were measured using the cyclic voltammetry (CV) and linear sweep anodic stripping voltammetry (LSASV) techniques. Under optimized conditions, the anodic peak current was proportional to the As(III) concentration over a wide linear range of 5 to 30 µg/L, with a detection limit of 6.2 µg/L. The suggested approach was effectively valid for the testing of As(III) found within the real water samples with good reproducibility and stability.
