Development and Assessment of Professional Competences among Polish Nursing Students during a 3-Year Education Cycle Trying

The essence of the profile of nursing professional competences are basic behavioral characteristics, as well as mastering practical skills. The aim of this study was determination of the development of professional competences of perceiving a patient by first-, second-and third-year students of licentiate nursing study. The study was of a longitudinal character, and lasted for 3 years. The research instrument used was the Ascent to Competence Scale, and traditional assessment of students’ knowledge and skills. A statistically significant relationship was observed between the average grade in practical education from all three years, and competences in student–teacher relationship. Higher grades in theoretical education were accompanied by lower results obtained by students in the area of nursing competences. The respondents’ opinions concerning the development of knowledge and professional skills were relatively high among first-year students, which may be related with a sharp increase in nursing knowledge, whereas third-year students considered it important to perceive a considerable development of professional competences. The results of this study can help in the design of education programs meeting quality standards, and alignment with students and population health needs, which is adequate to the assumptions of the WHO Global Strategic Directions for Nursing and Midwifery 2021–2025.

Moral intelligence, clinical placement experience and professional behaviors among Iranian undergraduate nursing students in a baccalaureate nursing program: A descriptive correlational study

AIMS

This study was intended to examine the relationship of both moral intelligence (MI) and Clinical Placement Experience (CPE) with the level of nursing students' professional behaviors (PB).

BACKGROUND

The foundation of belief, belonging and ethical values develop PB as a meaningful attribute during the period students and caring for patients.

DESIGN

A descriptive correlational study was conducted.

METHODS

Descriptive data were derived from the Belongingness Scale-Clinical Placement Experience (BES-CPE), the Moral Intelligence Questionnaire (MIQ) and the Nursing Students Professional Behaviors Scale (NSPBS) including 200 students (response rate 94.5%).

RESULTS

We found a statistically strong positive correlation between NSPB, MI and CPE. The regression model accounted for 57.8% of the variance in NSPB; CPE and MI were significant explanatory variables of NSPB. Moreover, the non-employed dormitory students had a significant statistical difference in the scores of all three variables. Female students had significantly higher CPE and MI (p˂0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

According to our findings, preventive and mediation endeavors for nursing students can explicitly target their behavioral skills to reduce perceived rejection and improve morality. As a result, an optimal plan to improve the quality of professional training courses for students should be designed based on the comprehension of clinical belonging and moral intelligence.

New services development: a study in the context of a health organization

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to highlight the understanding of the consequent factors of new services development (NSD) in the literature owing to the impact on organizational competitiveness, especially in professional services, such as that investigated by health plan operators in the present study.

Design/methodology/approach

The sample (customer of family health plans) consisted of 255 valid cases. For the analysis of the data, multivariate statistical techniques were used through the modeling of structural equations.

Findings

The results found evidence of the significant relationships between the NSD considering the constructs, client orientation, reputation, professional competences and customer retention, as consequences of the NSD, which impact on the success of the new services launched by the health plan operator from the perception of the customer.

Practical implications

This implies that health plan operators need to develop new customer-oriented services by investing in new technologies and having more trained and qualified staff so that they can deliver superior services and, as a consequence, have a more profitable relationship with customers.

Originality/value

The new services may result in greater organizational performance and greater competitiveness for health service providers.

Belongingness and its implications for undergraduate health professions education: a scoping review

Belongingness is well recognised within higher education to have an important influence on the performance and well-being of learners. There appears to be little awareness of its importance in undergraduate health professions education. To identify how belongingness has been defined and measured, its impact on the performance and well-being of learners, and how it can be fostered in educational settings. A scoping review to map the published research in the wider higher education literature (including undergraduate health professions education). PubMed and ERIC were used. Only peer-reviewed articles in the English Language between 1996 and 2016 were included. Fifty-one relevant articles were identified with 16 related to nurse clinical education. No studies were found in undergraduate medical education or in primary care educational settings. Common features were identified within the several definitions of belongingness. A thematic analysis of articles revealed that belongingness has an important role in student motivation and learning identity formation and in facilitating positive mental health. The scoping review highlighted the importance of belongingness in higher and undergraduate health professions education, with implications for future practice and policy. Further research is recommended. There are important implications for curriculum development and delivery, including clinical placements; within secondary and primary care health professional education.

Factors Affecting the Belongingness Sense of Undergraduate Nursing Students towards Clinical Setting: A Qualitative Study

Introduction: One of the most important needs of the students to work reliably in the clinical setting is the feeling of belongingness. Understanding and recognizing such a distinguishing feature among students can reduce their stress and tension. The current research aimed at studying the experiences of belongingness among nursing students in clinical settings.

Methods: In this conventional content analysis study, 12 nursing students were selected from Lorestan University of Medical Sciences by purposive method. In-depth interviews were employed to collect data. All interviews were recorded and transcribed for analyses. Data collection and analysis were carried out at the same time.

Results: The nature of belongingness with respect to clinical setting was expressed and classified in five themes and 11 subthemes. Five concepts (themes), which constituted the nature of nursing students’ experiences, were as follows: moving in the direction of evolvement, attention to human and ethical values, professional integrity, achieving inner satisfaction, and the environment conformity with learner.

Conclusion: The issue of belongingness and its promotion are of utmost importance. The clinical staff, including head nurses and nurses, must perform their roles properly in providing supportive and facilitative clinical environment, positive and constructive interactions, and professional development contexts for students, so that they feel being accepted and valued.

Validation of the Australian Nursing Standards Assessment Tool (ANSAT): A pilot study

BACKGROUND

Workplace-based learning and assessment are essential elements of all nursing education programs. There is, however, limited evidence of validity and reliability available regarding assessment instruments, based on the professional competency standards for nursing in Australia.

OBJECTIVE

The aims of this project were to advance the assessment properties of a new instrument, the Australian Nursing Standards Assessment Tool (ANSAT) and investigate the acceptability of this instrument when applied to the evaluation of the professional competence of nursing students in authentic practice settings.

METHODS

A validation study of ANSAT was conducted by 23 clinical assessors from two universities, completing 220 instruments for second and third year undergraduate nursing students undertaking clinical placement in an authentic practice setting. 'Think Aloud' interviews and a post-test survey provided additional data to determine the validity and acceptability of the ANSAT. The pilot study occurred in parallel with completion of existing university assessment instruments.

RESULTS

Principal components analysis extracted one factor: professional practice competence. Comparison of total instrument scores between year levels demonstrated a significant difference in each of the clinical domains (p=0.000), suggesting that the instrument is sensitive to differing levels of performance across different year levels. The ANSAT demonstrated high internal consistency with a Cronbach's alpha coefficient of 0.976. Post-test evaluation completed by assessors demonstrated high usability and acceptability for use in common practice settings.

DISCUSSION

Results of the pilot study provided preliminary support for the ANSAT instrument. It is recommended that testing of the instrument be undertaken on a larger cohort to ensure the generalisability of the findings to other nursing populations.

CONCLUSION

There is a need for valid and reliable instruments that assess the performance of nursing in the authentic practice setting. With the addition of supportive behavioural cues, the ANSAT enables clarity, consistency and collaboration in workplace-based assessment.
