Abstract
BACKGROUND Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has caused one of the worst global pandemics in recent decades. It has disrupted education systems worldwide, leading to a forced shift from traditional face-to-face to blended or fully distanced learning, requiring a higher level of student readiness for self-directed learning (SDL) and a more internal locus of control (LOC). OBJECTIVE This study explored the relationship between locus of control and level of readiness for SDL among Saudi nursing students and whether the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted this relationship. METHODS A cross-sectional correlational descriptive study was conducted to survey 277 Saudi nursing students enrolled in the bachelor program at one of the reputable universities in Saudi Arabia. An E-questionnaire containing two scales, the Self-Directed Learning Readiness Scale for Nursing Education, and the Locus of Control Scale, was used to collect data in addition to the selected participants' characteristics. RESULTS Nursing students had a moderate-to-low level of readiness for SDL (mean = 144.0), and the majority had an external LOC. There was a significant association between locus of control and level of readiness for self-directed learning (r = 0.19 *, p = 0.001), and the internal locus of control was more significantly associated with self-directed learning (r = 0.22 *, p = 0.0001) than with external locus of control. CONCLUSION The study findings indicate a propensity of respondents indicating an external locus of control, whereas most of the respondents' reported levels of readiness ranged between low and moderate across all dimensions of self-directed learning. This study was not registered.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Biochemistry is a core subject in clinical medical education. The traditional classroom teaching model led by teachers is often limited to the knowledge transfer of teachers and the passive acceptance of students. It lacks interactive and efficient teaching methods and is not enough to meet the learning needs and educational goals of modern students. The combination of WeChat public platform, flipped classroom and TBL teaching model is closer to the needs of real life and workplace, helping students to cultivate comprehensive literacy and the ability to solve practical problems. At the same time, this teaching model has yet to be used in biochemistry courses. OBJECTIVE To explore the influence of the mixed teaching model of flipped classroom and combining TBL based on WeChat public platform upon undergraduates in biochemistry. METHODS Using the mixed research method of quasi-experimental research design and descriptive qualitative research, 68 students were selected into the traditional and the blended teaching groups. Among them, the blended teaching group adopts the blended teaching model of flipped classroom combined with TBL based on the WeChat platform to learn biochemical courses. In this study, an independent sample t-test was intended to analyze the differences in final scores, a chi-square test was served to analyze the differences in satisfaction questionnaires, and thematic analysis was used to analyze semi-structured interview data. RESULTS Compared with the traditional teaching model, the mixed teaching model significantly improved students' final exam scores (P < 0.05). The teaching satisfaction of the mixed teaching group was also higher than that of the traditional teaching group with statistical significance (P < 0.05). The results of the interviews with eight students were summarized into three topics: (1) Stimulating interest in learning; (2) Improving the ability of autonomous learning; (3) Recommendations for improvement. CONCLUSIONS The combination of the WeChat platform and flipped classroom with TBL has a positive effect on improving medical students' autonomous learning ability and problem-solving ability. The research shows that the teaching mode of flipped classroom combined with TBL based on the WeChat platform is effective and feasible.

Abstract
In recent years, the COVID-19 pandemic has led to a shift in medical education from traditional face-to-face to online or remote learning, which provided challenges to faculty and students that have traditionally given face-to-face instruction. Self-directed learning (SDL) has gained popularity in undergraduate education such as nursing and adult education. Although the application of SDL in many medical teachings is practical, the application of SDL in undergraduate ophthalmology education has not been well investigated. COVID-19 pandemic led to changes in the learning style of undergraduate medical students to adapt to the shift from traditional classroom learning (TCL) to online or remote learning. Self-directed learning is a process in which individuals take the initiative in diagnosing their learning needs, formulating learning goals, identifying resources for learning, choosing and implementing appropriate learning strategies and evaluating learning outcomes. This study compared students' perspectives and study outcomes of the SDL and TCL to preliminarily investigate the effect of SDL in undergraduate ophthalmology education. The students showed equal perspectives and satisfaction with both learning models. There was no difference in learning outcomes at the end of the study. The students with different interests in ophthalmology had different perspectives on SDL and TCL. Self-directed learning is an essential alternative to traditional classroom learning in undergraduate ophthalmic education during the COVID-19 pandemic in China.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Surgical Nursing is a core subject for nursing undergraduates that requires active and effective learning strategies to cultivate students' autonomous learning competencies and critical thinking. The effects of BOPPPS (Bridge-in, Objectives, Pretest, Participatory Learning, Post-test and Summary) model combined with team-based learning (TBL) have rarely been explored in Surgical Nursing courses. OBJECTIVE To explore the effects of BOPPPS combined with TBL in Surgical Nursing for nursing undergraduates. METHODS A mixed research method of quasi-experimental study design and descriptive qualitative research was used. The control group included 27 nursing undergraduates who had finished the Surgical Nursing course using traditional learning. The experimental group included 36 nursing undergraduates were enrolled in to receive the Surgical Nursing course in the teaching mode of BOPPPS combined with TBL. The quantitative data of students' Surgical Nursing final scores, autonomous learning competencies and critical thinking ability of the two groups were collected and compared by t-test. Qualitative results were obtained through semi-structured interviews and data were analyzed by thematic analysis method. RESULTS Compared with the traditional learning mode, BOPPPS combined with TBL significantly improved nursing students' final examination scores, autonomous learning competencies and critical thinking ability (p < 0.05). Qualitative results from 14 undergraduate nursing students' interviews were summarized into five themes: (1) stimulating learning interest; (2) improving autonomous learning ability; (3) improving the sense of teamwork; (4) exercising critical thinking; and (5) suggestions for improvement. CONCLUSIONS The combination of BOPPPS and TBL positively impacted nursing students by improving their autonomous learning competencies and critical thinking ability. The study suggests BOPPPS combined with TBL learning as an effective, alternative learning mode.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Promoting self-directed learning (SDL) among nursing undergraduates is crucial to meet the new requirements of the healthcare system and to adapt to online learning contexts during the COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, identifying the classification features of SDL ability and developing targeted interventions are both critical. Professional identity (PI) may contribute to the cultivation of SDL ability, but their relationship remains relatively unknown. This study aimed to explore the subgroups of SDL ability and their differences in PI among nursing undergraduates during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS A total of 2438 nursing undergraduates at four universities in China were enrolled in this cross-sectional study from November 2021 to February 2022. The Self-Directed Learning Scale of Nursing Undergraduates (SLSNU) and the Professional Identity Scale for Nursing Students (PISNS) were administered. A latent profile analysis was performed to explore SDL ability latent profiles. Multinomial logistic regression analysis was conducted to examine the predictors of profile membership, and a one-way analysis of variance was applied to compare the PI scores in each latent profile. RESULTS Three latent profiles were identified and labeled 'low SDL ability' (n = 749, 30.7%), 'low initiative of help-seeking' (n = 1325, 54.4%) and 'high SDL ability' (n = 364, 14.9%). Multinomial logistic regression analysis suggested that nursing undergraduates who voluntarily chose a nursing major, had served as a student cadre, and had participated in clinical practicum were less likely to be included in the "low SDL ability" group. The average PI score was statistically different across the three profiles (F = 884.40, p < 0.001). CONCLUSION The SDL ability among nursing undergraduates was divided into three profiles, and results show that promoting PI may effectively foster SDL ability. This study highlights the importance of targeted interventions by considering their distinct SDL ability patterns, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In a rapidly changing healthcare environment, Self-directed learning (SDL) ability is recognized as a crucial condition for nursing students and nurse to deal with severe challenges positively. Developing SDL ability is becoming more and more important among nursing students. SDL is related to nursing students enhancing their own knowledge, skills and maintaining lifelong learning. This study is aim at translating the Self-directed Learning Instrument (SDLI) into Chinese and verify its reliability and validity among nursing students. METHODS The study adopted a cross-sectional design and the multistage sampling design. The SDLI was translated into Chinese, and the reliability and validity of the scale were tested among 975 nursing students. RESULTS The Cronbach's α value of the Chinese version of SDLI was 0.916. The split-half reliability coefficient was 0.829, and the retest coefficient was 0.884. The content validity index of the scale was 0.95. Furthermore, the four-factors model was obtained by using exploratory factor analysis, explaining 55.418% variance, and the communalities of the items ranged from 0.401 to 0.664. With modified confirmatory factor analysis, the fit indices were chi-square/degree of freedom (CMIN/DF) = 2.285, the comparative fit index (CFI) = 0.947, and the tucker lewis index (TLI) was 0.938. And, the model fitting indexes were all in the acceptable range and confirmatory factor analysis indicated that the model fit the SDLI well. CONCLUSION The Chinese version of SDLI has good validity and reliability among nursing students. It can be used to measure the SDL ability of nursing students in China.

Abstract
To apply the App to the curriculum could improve students' motivation and concentration, and also strengthen the effectiveness of professional knowledge of nursing students. OBJECTIVES To construct and evaluate the effectiveness of smartphone applications (i-STAR) in pediatric nursing courses. METHODS Quasi-experimental study and two-group repeated-measure design were used to evaluate the effectiveness of smartphone applications (i-STAR) in pediatric nursing courses. The "i" means "interactive", students had to log into App and finish four steps, including "Situation(S), Task(T), Action(A), and Reflection(R). A total of 163 nursing students in the third grade of associate's degree in nursing (ADN) participated in the study. The experimental group consisted of 77 participants, whereas the control group consisted of 86 participants. The instruments included the clinical reasoning readiness scale (CRRS), self-directed learning instrument (SDLI), and learning satisfaction of students. The 1st phase was the development, construction, and testing of the "i-STAR App", including hyperbilirubinemia, pneumonia, and urinary tract infection (UTI). In the 2nd phase, students operated and applied the App in the classroom. The 3rd phase was to evaluate the effectiveness of the "i-STAR App" in the course. RESULTS The average scores of CRRS and SDLI were not significantly different between the two groups in the T0 andT1 (p > .05). The experimental group of CRRS and SDLI were better than the control group in T0-T1, T1-T2, and T0-T2 (p < .001). The experimental group showed better CRRS and SDLI scores than the control group in T0-T1, and T0-T2 with Repeated measures ANOVA. Also, the experimental group showed prolonged learning effectiveness. The experimental group (41.22 ± 6.08) was more satisfied than the control group (37.29 ± 7.40) (p < .05), although their academic performance was about the same (p > .05). CONCLUSION "i-STAR App" could enhance students' interest in pediatric nursing courses, strengthen nursing students' clinical reasoning and self-directed learning ability.

Abstract
BACKGROUND It is crucial to evaluate student academic motivation and self-directed learning (SDL) readiness while teaching online or flexibly. During the coronavirus disease 2019 epidemic, there were few investigations on the link between academic motivation and SDL readiness. AIM This study investigated the connection between academic motivation and SDL readiness and the three academic motivation domains' predictive features. METHODS This cross-sectional study used convenience sampling to recruit 1187 nursing students from four nursing colleges in three countries. We utilized the Academic Motivation Scale College Version and Self-directed Learning Readiness Scale for Nurse Education to collect data. Descriptive and inferential statistics were employed to analyze the data. RESULTS Extrinsic motivation received the highest mean. Most nursing students exhibited SDL readiness, whereas "desire for learning" was rated the highest dimension of SDL readiness. We found significant differences in nursing students' intrinsic and extrinsic motivation and amotivation between the three countries. Finally, country, gender, and intrinsic motivation were significant predictors of the nursing students' SDL readiness. CONCLUSION Among Filipino, Saudi, and Thai nursing students, their SDL readiness is influenced by the intrinsic motivation domain. Therefore, nursing students with higher levels of intrinsic motivation are proactive learners for SDL.

Abstract
Background: Small group work embraces independent study and interactive learning, which enhance knowledge acquisition and skills. Self-directed learning (SDL) and problem-solving (PS) are essential skills in the development of the nursing profession. During the coronavirus pandemic, virtual learning was indispensable. However, little is known about how students develop SDL and PS abilities through online learning through group work. Objective: To evaluate the effects of the online intervention on SDL and PS abilities through interactive group work. Methods: A randomised waitlist-control trial was carried out. A structured intervention using problem-based learning (PBL) as a guideline was used to direct student learning in small group work. Assessments were scheduled at Time 0 (baseline), Time 1 (8th week), Time 2 (16th week), and Time 3 (28th week). Results: The mean student age was 21.45 (SD = 0.86). About 78% of students were female. There was no significant difference in demographic characteristics and analysis at the baseline. Students in the intervention group reported greater improvement in the SDLRS and PSI at the 8th week, whereas those in the waitlist control group reported greater improvement in the SDLRS and PSI at the 16th week. Sustained effects in the SDLRS and PSI were observed in both the intervention and waitlist control groups at the 16th and 28th weeks, respectively. A repeated-measure analysis was performed to compare the SDLRS and PSI in different periods and revealed statistically significant results (p < 0.001) in all subscales of SDLRS and PSI in the four study periods. Conclusions: The guidelines appear to be an effective treatment for SDL and PS ability enhancement with sustainable effects through interactive group work. The guidelines with explicit instructions and learning objectives provide directions and guidance to students to learn more effectively. The educator plays a vital role in facilitating the students’ SDL and PS ability improvement.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Self-directed learning (SDL) is encouraged in professional education because it nurtures students' self-motivation and promotes accountability to their own learning. SDL is crucial to fostering collaborative skills for multi-disciplinary practice in today's healthcare settings. OBJECTIVE To identify factors associated with SDL ability among undergraduate nursing students. DESIGN A systematic review was conducted. METHODS The PICO (population, intervention, comparison and outcomes) strategy was used as a guide. Searches were done of studies published between May 2010 and April 2020 via MEDLINE, CINAHL, and EMBASE, as well as print. Screening, selection, and data extraction were performed by two independent reviewers. All discrepancies were resolved through discussion or by consulting a third reviewer. RESULT A total of 18 of 1576 articles were selected based on the PRISMA process. The methodological quality of all included studies was mostly moderate. Factors associated with SDL were identified from both quantitative and qualitative evidence. Upon the integration of all evidence, the results showed that SDL is developed with the interaction environmental influence (types of study programmes, study years, and teaching-learning strategies) and personal influence [personal characteristics (age and gender) and learning attributes (problem-solving ability, self-efficacy, learning attitude and learning interest). Strategies employing individual study and small group learning with adequate support by educators exert a great deal of positive effect on SDL improvement. CONCLUSION All identified factors improve students' SDL. The results of the review revealed SDL development with the interaction of environmental/situation influence and personal influence. Nurse educators should be more aware of the effects of these factors on SDL development during different stages of study. Strategies with independent learning and small group learning are effective to enhance students' learning attributes. Importantly, continuous support and guidance provided by educators is crucial to achieve students' SDL enhancement for lifelong learning during study.

Abstract
Self-directed learning refers to an approach to acquiring knowledge and skills in which learners take responsibility for themselves. Currently, it is a feasible way to familiarize with nursing information systems, which are essential components of hospital information systems and widely used in clinical nursing. This study assessed undergraduate nursing students' self-directed learning of nursing information systems and explored influencing factors, using a cross-sectional design and a convenience sample. Participants voluntarily completed a general information questionnaire, a training demands questionnaire for nursing information systems, and the Self-rating Scale for Self-directed Learning, which measured the level of self-directed learning. A total of 353 valid surveys were analyzed, among which 51.8% agreed with the necessity of mastering nursing information systems. Nursing students present a moderate level of self-directed learning, with an advantage in interpersonal skills and a deficiency in learning activities. Students' training demands, confidence in using nursing information systems in clinical practice, attitude toward nursing as a career, and academic performance were identified as predictors of self-directed learning for nursing information systems. Future cross-national research, studies about other factors, and ways to improve formal education are needed.

Abstract
An ever-changing and challenging patient care environment requires nurses and midwives to embrace the concept of lifelong learning through a self-directed learning (SDL) approach. This study aims to evaluate nurses and midwives' readiness towards self-directed learning (SDRL) in Brunei Darussalam. A cross sectional descriptive study was conducted. Using a non-proportional quota sampling method, 700 questionnaires were distributed among nurses and midwives working in four District Government Hospitals in Brunei. Fisher's Self Directed Learning Readiness Scale was used to explore readiness towards SDL among nurses and midwives. In total, 616 completed questionnaires were returned (representing a response rate of 88%). Results indicated a high level of readiness towards self-directed learning among the participants with a total mean SDLR score of 158.44 ± 16.00. In overall comparison, the mean score of domains were: self-management (49.21), desire for learning (50.12) and self-control (59.10). This national hospital survey concludes that graduateness, workplace, age and marital status determine readiness towards self-directed learning among nurses and midwives in Brunei. Future research should focus on a theoretical framework for SDL models and the impact of these models on quality nursing practice.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Lifelong learning is an important part of professionalism as nurses need to maintain competency and current knowledge for practice. PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between baccalaureate nursing students' self-directed learning (SDL) abilities and lifelong learning orientation. METHODS A quantitative, correlational research design was used. Students (n = 124) completed the Self-Directed Learning Inventory (SDLI) and the Jefferson Scale of Lifelong Learning-Health Professions Students (JeffSLL-HPS). RESULTS There was a significant, positive correlation between the SDLI total scores and the JeffSLL-HPS total scores (r = 0.64, P < .0001). There also were positive correlations between the JeffSLL-HPS total scores and 4 SDL domains: interpersonal communication (r = 0.39, P < .0001), planning and implementing (r = 0.52, P < .0001), self-monitoring (r = 0.48, P < .0001), and learning motivation (r = 0. 63, P < .0001). CONCLUSION Nursing faculty should implement teaching and learning strategies that foster SDL abilities to increase lifelong learning orientation in nursing students.

Objective
The purposes of this study were to analyze the influencing factors of self-directed learning readiness (SDLR) of nursing undergraduates and explore the impacts of learning attitude and self-efficacy on nursing undergraduates.
Methods
A total of 500 nursing undergraduates were investigated in Tianjin, with the Chinese version of SDLR scale, learning attitude questionnaire of nursing college students, academic self-efficacy scale, and the general information questionnaire.
Result
The score of SDLR was 149.99±15.73. Multiple stepwise regressions indicated that academic self-efficacy, learning attitude, attitudes to major of nursing, and level of learning difficulties were major influential factors and explained 48.1% of the variance in SDLR of nursing interns.
Conclusions
The score of SDLR of nursing undergraduates is not promising. It is imperative to correct students’ learning attitude, improve self-efficacy, and adopt appropriate teaching model to improve SDLR.

Abstract
A self-directed learning laboratory (SDL Lab) was established in which undergraduate nursing students were provided access to experienced nurses in a simulated ward environment to enhance preparedness for clinical practice. The aim of this study was to explore perspectives of final year, undergraduate student nurses about the SDL Lab and directed self-guidance, with particular focus on the impact on learning and preparedness for professional practice. The study was framed within a qualitative descriptive approach using semi-structured, digitally recorded face-to-face interviews. The purposive sample included undergraduate students enrolled in their final year of a Bachelor of Nursing program, who had accessed the SDL Lab on at least two occasions. Thematic analysis was used. Twelve students participated. Three main themes were identified: 1) A safe environment that fosters effective learning; 2) Directed self-guidance strengthens confidence and competence during workplace experiences; 3) Enhancing accessibility and realism will improve learning. Reports of increased confidence in performing nursing skills was found in this study. Evaluation of the SDL Lab found that this alternative teaching strategy was favourable, and students appreciated the safe learning environment. Future research might explore measurement of the effect of directed self-guidance in an SDL facility on competence and confidence.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The European Higher Education Area places students at the centre of the teacher-guided learning process and requires them to participate more in their education and to be responsible for acquiring the professional competences relevant to their career. Self-directed learning is a key means for developing the skills necessary for professional careers. OBJECTIVE To measure self-directed learning readiness in health science undergraduates. METHOD Observational descriptive cross-sectional study of a convenience sample drawn from the total health science (medicine, nursing, physiotherapy and psychology) undergraduate population (n = 1699) at the University of Girona (Spain). The data collection instrument was a self-directed learning readiness scale with 38 items administered to the 1134 undergraduates who agreed to participate. RESULTS Just over three quarters of the sample (n = 865; 76.27%) completed the full questionnaire. Self-directed learning readiness was indicated by an overall mean (standard deviation) score of 143.65 (11.76) points. Nursing undergraduates obtained the highest mean (SD) score - 145.08 (14.13) - in the overall scale. Associations were observed between degree course and self-directed learning readiness in the learning planning, desire for learning, self-confidence, self-management and self-evaluation subscales. Women scored better than men (p < 0.13) and scores progressively improved with each additional academic year. CONCLUSION The sampled students exhibited good self-directed learning readiness. Training students in self-directed learning skills is a necessary part of the teaching-learning process. This kind of training in universities needs to be reinforced to develop learning autonomy, promote lifelong learning and prepare competent future health professionals.

Abstract
Self-directed learning is a necessary skill for students and workers to remain lifelong learners. Being self-directed in learning allows nurses to stay elastic, open to change and sustain their, professional development. The aim of this study was to determine the level of self-directed learning readiness of undergraduate students of nursing and midwifery. This study also investigated whether there were associations between the level of self-directed learning readiness and selected demographic variables such as gender, department, academic level and monthly income in the undergraduate students. Quantitative research method was used in this research. A total of 398 students participated in this survey conducted at the Faculty of Health Sciences of University of Amasya. The Self-Directed Learning Readiness Scale (SDLRS) that was developed by Fisher et al., was used. In the data analysis, descriptive statistics, Kruskal Wallis H test and Mann Whitney U test were applied. In this study, it was revealed that nursing and midwifery students had relatively high self-directed learning readiness. However, students received the lowest score for the self-management dimension, which indicates that students need support in self-management skills. As a result of the Mann Whitney U test, it was put forward that there were statistically significant differences in level of self-directed learning readiness based on gender and department. As a result of the Kruskal Wallis H test, it was found that there was no difference in level of self-directed learning readiness based on monthly income variable.
