Student health professionals' attitudes and experience after watching "Ida's Diary", a first-person account of living with borderline personality disorder: Mixed methods study

A cinenurducation activity using Call the Midwife to teach about sexually transmitted infections and preeclampsia: design, implementation, and assessment

BACKGROUND

Nursing students need to learn about sexually transmitted infections and preeclampsia. Cinenureducation is a rigorous method that uses materials from commercial movies or television series to teach health sciences students.

OBJECTIVES

Using content analysis of the television series Call the Midwife, design a cinenureducation activity teaching nursing students about sexually transmitted infections and preeclampsia. Evaluate its effectiveness in knowledge acquisition. DESIGN, IMPLEMENTATION, AND PRE-POST ASSESSMENT OF KNOWLEDGE GAIN FOR TEACHING ACTIVITIES: The study comprised three main steps: designing the teaching activity, implementing it, and analyzing its pedagogical effectiveness through a pre-and-post study to assess knowledge acquisition resulting from the teaching activity.

PARTICIPANTS

A six-member panel assessed the suitability of materials for the teaching goals. All second-year undergraduate nursing students in the course "Nursing management and leadership" at a nursing school in the 2022-2023 academic year were invited to participate (N = 160).

METHODS

The panel conducted a content analysis of the first two seasons of the series to determine the usefulness of each episode for teaching the chosen topics. Students were randomly assigned to groups watching episodes emphasizing either sexually transmitted infections or preeclampsia, followed by discussion. Learning was gauged through a pre-post viewing 20-question multiple-choice test. Additionally, students' satisfaction was evaluated.

RESULTS

A total of 142 nursing students participated. Significant differences between mean scores before and after intervention were found [6.90 vs. 6.42 on the preintervention assessment, p < 0.05; mean gain, 0.49 (95 % CI: 0.22-0.76)]. Most students were satisfied with the activity.

CONCLUSIONS

The activity was useful for teaching about sexually transmitted infections and preeclampsia. The use of a television series portraying nurses enables the exploration of these critical topics. This has potential implications for integrating similar methods into nurse education curricula, emphasizing the broader impact of the research on pedagogical practices in healthcare education.

Effects of Arts-Based Pedagogy on Competence Development in Nursing: A Critical Systematic Review

The integration of arts-based methods into nursing education is a topic of growing interest in nursing practice. While there is an emerging body of research on this subject, evidence on competence development remains vague, largely due to methodological weaknesses. The purpose of this review is to evaluate the effectiveness of arts-based pedagogy in nursing, specifically in terms of students' changes in knowledge, skills, and attitudes. It explores which arts-based approaches to nursing education qualify as evidence-based practice in terms of nursing competence. A systematic critical review of research on arts-based pedagogy in nursing was conducted, identifying 43 relevant studies. These studies were assessed for methodological quality based on the CEC Standards for evidence-based practice, and 13 high-quality comparative studies representing a variety of arts-based approaches were selected. Creative drama was identified as the only evidence-based practice in the field, positively affecting empathy. The findings highlight a research gap in nursing education and emphasize the need for measurement and appraisal tools suitable for the peculiarities of arts-based pedagogy.

Psychiatric care and education understood from a student perspective: Enhancing competences empowering personal and social recovery

BACKGROUND

During the last decades, a recovery-based approach has called for a change in mental health care services. Several programmes have been presented, and the need to develop student and professional competences in education and clinical practice has been documented.

AIM

The aim of this study was to explore how psychiatric care is understood seen from a student perspective (nursing students, masters nurses and a master in applied philosophy) with focus on their personal competences and the educational interventions empowering processes for users' personal and social recovery.

METHOD

A qualitative design with a phenomenological-hermeneutic approach based on the French philosopher Paul Ricoeur's theory of interpretation. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews.

FINDINGS

All interviewees expressed that both theoretically and clinically students did not experience a recovery-oriented approach empowering users' personal and social recovery process. On the contrary, they experienced that both education and practice were dominated by a biomedical approach providing clinical recovery. However, several students were aware of their need of developing personal and relational competences to be able to support the users' personal and social recovery journey. The students expressed that there is a need for educational processes targeting personal competences in 'becoming a professional' supporting 'presentness and awareness' and thereby the development of relational abilities and the courage to engage. The results relate to two nursing schools and two universities.

CONCLUSION

A biomedical approach dominates and makes it difficult to develop students' personal competences during education in practice and theory vital to the development of personal and social recovery-oriented practices. It is recommended that educators-in practice and in school-accentuate presentness, awareness and creativity as crucial relational capabilities and incorporate this in their teaching and supervision method, supporting the education and formation of the students' (and teachers' and supervisors') personal development processes.

Improving Attitudes Towards Personality Disorder: Is Training for Health and Social Care Professionals Effective?

Health and social care professionals are more likely to hold negative attitudes towards people with a diagnosis of personality disorder than toward people with other mental health diagnoses. Negative attitudes have also been found to adversely impact care and service provision. This review sought to systemically evaluate training aimed at improving professional attitudes towards people with a diagnosis of personality disorder. Electronic databases PsychINFO, PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and ProQuest were searched, and 19 articles were identified. Results show that training is effective and that improvements tend to be maintained. The results suggest that (1) co-production with people with personal experience of a personality disorder diagnosis, (2) communicating a psychological model to participants, and (3) teaching participants clinical skills for use in their work improve effectiveness. Further research in the form of randomized controlled trials that use validated measures and follow-up participants for at least 6 months is needed.

Understanding illnesses through a film festival: An observational study

Audio-visual materials play a fundamental role in the context of education, care and clinical treatment, as they seem to have a high impact on public awareness. This study aims to describe what messages are perceived by the society at an International Festival of Short Films and Art on Diseases that may help to understand difficult topics, such as illness, dying and suffering.

Through an observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study, using full participant observation and an open, self-administered questionnaire, 32 short films were analysed during a healthcare art festival. Categories were developed using inductive content analysis. The message perceived by the participants, after the viewing of the shorts and reflection of the debates among the attendees, were considered in four categories: i) creative and positive education is possible; ii) awareness of preconception and practical duties; iii) meaning of life changes the experience of illness; iv) family and caregivers also experienced suffering. The short films are considered as an excellent tool to generate social dialogue and debate. Public events can be understood as an opportunity to acquire, in an emotional and critical manner, other competencies for public awareness. Together, they are capable of communicating difficult messages through a fast, positive, and creative way.
