Abstract
AIMS This study aims to explore the practice of advance care planning (ACP) among Chinese oncology nurses and identify challenges influencing care provision. DESIGN A sequential explanatory mixed-method design was employed, comprising a quantitative phase to assess communication practices, followed by a qualitative phase to explore the challenges faced in ACP. METHODS The study employed convenience sampling, including 532 oncology nurses from seven hospitals in northern China. Quantitative data were collected through a cross-sectional survey and the ACP communication index from December 2021 to January 2022. The qualitative phase consisted of 19 interviews conducted between May and July 2022, which were thematically analysed to elucidate the challenges in ACP practices. RESULTS Quantitative findings revealed a low frequency of ACP communication among Chinese oncology nurses. Qualitative analysis identified four themes: lack of optimal timing, passive engagement of patients or families, reluctance of healthcare professionals and unsupported policies. CONCLUSION The study concluded that identified challenges compromise the effectiveness of ACP practices among Chinese oncology nurses. Inadequate communication, limited interdisciplinary collaboration and policy gaps contribute to nonstandardised ACP processes. IMPLICATIONS FOR THE PROFESSION AND/OR PATIENT CARE The findings underscore the need for targeted interventions to enhance nurses' communication skills, foster interdisciplinary collaboration and provide policy support. Such interventions are pivotal to optimising end-of-life care in oncology settings and facilitating the integration of ACP into routine nursing practices. Abstract
BACKGROUND Facing patient death is an unavoidable aspect of work for nurses working in healthcare settings. The attitudes of nurses toward death, however, can exert a negative psychological impact on themselves that can even cause them to quit this occupation. AIM The objective of this study was to explore the attitudes of nurses toward death, the factors influencing said attitudes, and whether nurses basic attributes and attitudes toward death were associated with their future turnover behavior. METHOD A prospective study design was adopted. The recruitment period ran from October 2017 to March 2018. A total of 323 nurses completed a basic attributes survey as well as the Death Attitude Profile-Revised questionnaire and were followed until May 30, 2021. The factors influencing turnover were then analyzed using the Cox proportional hazard model. The STROBE checklist was used for reporting in this study. RESULTS Age was found to be significantly associated with fear of death and death avoidance. Compared with nurses with no religion, nurses who were Buddhists/Taoists were more inclined toward neutral acceptance in their attitude toward death, whereas those who were Christians/Catholics were more inclined toward escape acceptance. Nurses with less than three years of work experience were more likely to resign earlier than those with more than 3 years of work experience. Fear of death and approach acceptance could be used to predict turnover. CONCLUSIONS Younger nurses were more likely to exhibit fear of death and escape behavior, and those with less work experience or a greater fear of death were more likely to resign. Nurses with religious beliefs could accept patient death more positively, whereas those who faced death with positive approach acceptance displayed reductions in turnover. IMPLICATION FOR NURSING AND HEALTH POLICY Younger nurses should receive more education regarding death early in their training. Hospitals should also offer more education from a religious aspect in order to reduce turnover.

Abstract
Background Death education has been confirmed to be an effective method to enhance nursing students' attitudes and coping abilities toward death. However, integrated Narrative Pedagogy into the death education to explore educational effectiveness is still limited. The study aimed to evaluate the effects of a death education based on Narrative Pedagogy in a palliative care course on the attitude toward death, coping with death, and attitude toward caring for the dying among undergraduate nursing students in China. Methods The study was designed as a pre-post intervention study with a quasi-experimental design. All the participants received 6 class hours of death education which was designed in a palliative care course. The death education includes preparation, presentation, discussion, reflection, and practice of the narrative materials. Death Attitude Profile-Revised (DAP-R), Coping with Death Scale (CDS), and Frommelt Attitude Toward Care of the Dying-Form B (FATCOD-Form B) were used to measure outcomes. Results Sixty undergraduate nursing students who consented. There were statistically significant increases in the mean score of neutral acceptance and approach acceptance in the DAP-R, CDS, and FATCOD-Form B before and after the intervention. Conclusion This death education integrated Narrative Pedagogy which indicated to improve attitude toward death, competence to cope with death, and attitude toward the care of dying patients. The findings assist teachers in understanding the importance and urgency of death education, as well as providing a favorable approach to death education. However, the long-term effectiveness still needs to study in further.

Abstract
Inadequate clinical preparation for palliative care is often reflected in inadequate education about death. Nursing students as nurses of the future, it is necessary to make them aware of death and overcome fear of it so that they can cope with their future careers and provide qualified and warmly care service. OBJECTIVES To determine the effect of death education course using constructivist learning theory on first grade undergraduate nursing student attitudes and coping abilities towards death. DESIGN This study was designed using a mixed-methods design. SETTING Two campuses of a university school of nursing in China. PARTICIPANTS First grade Bachelor of Nursing Science students (n = 191). METHODS Data collection includes questionnaires and reflective writing as after class task. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the Wilcoxon Signed Rank test, and the Mann-Whitney U test. As for reflective writing, content analysis was hired to analysis. RESULTS The intervention group's attitude towards death tended to be neutral acceptance. The intervention group's ability to deal with death (Z = -5.354, p < 0.001) and expression of thoughts about death (Z = -3.89 b, p < 0.001) greater than that of the control group. Four themes (Awareness of death before class, Knowledge, The meaning of palliative care, New cognition) were identified from reflecting writing. CONCLUSION Compared with the conventional teaching, death education course utilizing constructivist learning theory was found to be a more effective method for developing students' death coping skills and reducing fear of death.

Background
It is important to understand how the perception of death affects the competence to cope with death.
Objectives
To explore whether the perception of death has an indirect effect on competence to cope with death through the mediation of attitude toward death and meaning of life.
Methods
A total of 786 nurses from Hunan Province, China, selected by random sampling method and asked to complete an online electronic questionnaire between October and November 2021 were included in the study.
Results
The nurses’ scored 125.39 ± 23.88 on the competence to cope with death. There was a positive correlation among perception of death, competence to cope with death, the meaning of life, and attitude toward death. There were three mediating pathways: the separate mediating effect of natural acceptance and meaning of life, and the chain mediating effect of natural acceptance and meaning of life.
Conclusion
The nurses’ competence to cope with death was moderate. Perception of death could indirectly and positively predict nurses’ competence to cope with death by enhancing natural acceptance or sense of meaning in life. In addition, perception of death could improve natural acceptance and then enhance the sense of meaning in life to positively predict nurses’ competence to cope with death.

Abstract
Objective This study aimed to explore the perception on advanced directives (ADs) among older adults in Shanghai. Methods Through purposive sampling, 15 older adults with rich life experiences who were willing to share perceptions and experiences of ADs participated in this study. Face-to-face semi-structured interviews were conducted to collect the qualitative data. Thematic content analysis was applied to analyze the data. Results Five themes have been identified: low awareness but high acceptance of ADs; pursuing natural and peaceful sunset life; ambiguous attitude on medical autonomy; being irrational facing patients' dying and death issues; positive about implementing ADs in China. Conclusion It is possible and feasible to implement ADs in older adults. Death education and compromised medical autonomy may be needed in the Chinese context as the foundation. The elder's understanding, willingness and worries about ADs should be fully revealed. Diverse approaches should be applied to introduce and interpret ADs to older adults continuously.

Abstract
Background Chinese clinical nurses are increasingly confronting patient death, as the proportion of hospital deaths is growing. Witnessing patient suffering and death is stressful, and failure to cope with this challenge may result in decreased well-being of nurses and impediment of the provision of “good death” care for patients and their families. To our knowledge, few studies have specifically explored clinical nurses’ experiences coping with patient death in mainland China. Objective We aimed to explore nurses’ experiences coping with patient death in China in order to support frontline clinical nurses effectively and guide the government in improving hospice care policy. Methods Clinical nurses were recruited using purposive and snowball sampling between June 2020 and August 2020. We gathered experiences of clinical nurses who have coped with patient death using face-to-face, semi-structured, in-depth interviews. Audio recordings were transcribed verbatim and analyzed using thematic analysis. Results Three thematic categories were generated from data analysis. The first was “negative emotions from contextual challenges.” This category involved grief over deaths of younger persons, pity for deaths without family, and dread related to coping with patient death on night duty. The second category was “awareness of mortality on its own.” Subthemes included the ideas that death means that everything stops being and good living is important because we all die and disappear. The third category was “coping style.” This category included focusing on treating dying patients, recording the signs and symptoms, and responding to changes in the patient’s condition. It also involved subthemes such as avoiding talk about death due to the grief associated with dying and death, and seeking help from colleagues. Conclusions Clinical nurses’ emotional experiences are shaped by intense Chinese filial love, charity, and cultural attitudes towards death. Reasonable nurse scheduling to ensure patient and staff safety is a major priority. “Good death” decisions based on Chinese ethical and moral beliefs must be embedded throughout hospital care. Abstract
Background Considering older adults are getting closer to the end-of-life and face death more directly. Attitudes to death not only affect the physical and mental health of older adults, but also affect their acceptance of hospice care, even the quality of death. This study aims to explore the status, influencing factors of attitudes toward death and demands of death education among the community-dwelling older adults in southwestern China. Methods A cross-sectional survey was adopted to investigate 683 community-dwelling older adults in Chongqing, China. Non-parametric test and multiple linear regression analysis was used to explore the influencing factors of different attitudes toward death of older adults in community. Results The multiple linear regression models showed that different dimensions of death attitudes were affected by one or more factors including number of diseases, discussion about life and death, marital status, and average income per month. And community-dwelling older adults have high level demand for death education. Conclusions Under the taboo culture of death in China, this study is one of the few studies on the attitudes toward death and the demands for death education of the community-dwelling older adults. This study contributes to enrich the global death studies and provide reference for the death education for older adults. Abstract
BACKGROUND Life-and-death education is intimately related to palliative-and-hospice care. It should be implemented among groups of all ages, especially for the elderly. This study aims to establish expert consensus on a set of scientific and systematic life-and-death education contents for the elderly and provide reference for the practice on the elderly. METHODS This study designed three rounds of expert consultation by using a Delphi method. A panel of 22 experts from the fields of palliative-and-hospice care, life-and-death education, geriatric nursing, humanities and ethics, and geriatric psychology participated in the study. RESULTS This study finally reached expert consensus on the contents of life-and-death education for the elderly, containing 4 first-level items, Life-and-death literacy promotion in the elderly; Life-and-death concept establishment of the elderly; Life-and-death planning of the elderly; Life-and-death thoughts of the elderly with affiliated 9 second-level items, and corresponding 23 detailed third-level items. CONCLUSIONS The life-and-death education contents for the elderly offer a basis for publicity for health professionals, promote dialogues on death, preparation, and planning for death and dying. The life-and-death education contents system was clear in coherence containing definite and comprehensive contents, which enriched life-and-death education resources globally. The results could assist in the planning of palliative-and-hospice care services to improve quality of death of the elderly.

Abstract
Aim To describe the experiences of student nurses in confronting the death of their patients, and to understand how they cope with these events and to what extent there are unmet needs that can be addressed in their trainings. Methods Semi-structured interview method was used to collect data from Chinese nursing students and then Colaizzi’s seven-step analysis method was applied to identify recurrent themes in their responses to patient deaths. We listened the tape repeatedly combined with observations of their non-verbal behaviors, then transcribed them with emotional resonance, and entered them into Nvivo. After that, we extracted repeated and significant statements from the transcriptions, coded, then clustered codes into sub-themes and themes which were identified by the comparation with transcriptions and re-confirmation with our participants. Results After confirmation from the interviewees, five themes emerged: emotional experience, challenge, growth, coping and support. Abstract
AIM To describe the prevalence of perceived self-competence in palliative care among emergent care nurses, and explore its predictors. BACKGROUND Emergent care nurses have a responsibility to develop palliative care competence to enhance the quality of life of dying patients and their families in the emergency department. METHODS With a convenience sample, a cross-sectional study was conducted among 415 emergent care nurses from 22 hospitals in China. Descriptive analysis, Spearman correlation analysis, and multivariate linear stepwise regression were performed. RESULTS Variables including marital status (single), emergency department not implementing palliative care, no palliative care training, and true cooperation dimension were selected as independent predictors and explained 19.9% of variation in the regression model. CONCLUSIONS Interventions to improve healthy work environments, offering palliative care training, advocating for policies in palliative care, and offering support to unmarried nurses can advance nurses' palliative care competence. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING MANAGEMENT This is the first study of emergent care nurses in China aimed at identifying predictors associated with palliative care self-competence. It is significant in that palliative care training and a cooperative work environment are required to encourage the development of palliative care.

Abstract
AIM To investigate the knowledge, attitudes and practice of advance care planning and confirm their influencing factors among nursing interns in China. BACKGROUND Due to a lack of standardized courses on advance care planning (ACP) in China, nursing interns do not possess the knowledge of ACP and cannot apply it to clinical practice. DESIGN A convergent parallel mixed-methods design. METHODS 382 nursing interns aged > 18 years were recruited using convenience sampling. Quantitative data were collected using the General Demographic Characteristics Questionnaire and the Advance Care Planning Knowledge, Attitude and Practice Questionnaire. Thirteen nursing interns were drawn from the quantitative phase and their interviews were thematically analyzed. RESULTS The ACP attitudes and practice scores of nursing students were 48.85 ± 6.39 and 32.23 ± 4.58, respectively, with a high level, while their ACP knowledge score was 6.89 ± 2.70, with a medium level. The significant promotive factors included positive attitude toward death and the nursing major and experience in clinical rescues and palliative care training; The key hindrance factors included the lack of ACP education and the limitations of the working environment. CONCLUSIONS The study highlighted the importance of delivering systematic palliative care training and integrating the practice of ACP into routine nursing practice. Doing this can help expand advance care planning knowledge, establish positive attitudes and meet the practical needs of nursing interns for their ACP clinical practice.
