Abstract
PURPOSE To improve the quality of community health nursing practice, the learning outcomes of nursing students in community health nursing courses must be enhanced. Although the flipped classroom is considered an effective innovative teaching strategy, evidence of its application in community health nursing courses is limited. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the effects of a flipped classroom approach on community nursing competence, academic performance, course engagement, and learning satisfaction for a community health nursing course. DESIGN A quasi-experimental study design was adopted between September 2021 and January 2022. METHODS Two classes of nursing students (n = 92) from a 2-year nursing program at a university in Taiwan were recruited. The classes were randomly assigned to the intervention group (n = 50) that attended a flipped classroom and the control group (n = 42) that received traditional lecture-based instruction. FINDINGS Compared with the control group, the intervention group demonstrated significantly greater improvements in community nursing competence (p = .012) and significantly higher academic performance (p = .005). In addition, the course engagement and learning satisfaction of the two groups were high, but not significantly different. CONCLUSIONS A flipped classroom can be an important strategy to enhance community nursing competence and academic performance. CLINICAL EVIDENCE The flipped classroom strategy can enhance community nursing competence of nursing students, which may improve the quality of population-based healthcare.

Abstract
AIM This study aimed to examine if a cooperative intervention improved outcomes for a simulation-based paediatric nursing course. BACKGROUND Fostering cooperative learning can enhance student engagement and improve learning. Simulation-based courses provide nursing students an opportunity to practice and hone nursing skills when hands-on experiences are limited. Providing instruction in cooperative learning could improve course outcomes. DESIGN A quasi-experimental study with pre-test/post-test assessments. METHODS Third-year nursing students enrolled in an 18-week paediatric simulation-based nursing course were purposively recruited (N = 110). One class (n = 55) received a researcher-developed cooperative learning program, which encouraged student support during class activities and simulations. The second class (control) received usual class instruction and simulations. The efficacy of the intervention was assessed by comparing mean scores at class enrolment (pre-test) and completion (post-test) for self-perceived problem-solving attitude, cooperative learning experience and knowledge of paediatric nursing. Paired t-tests compared pre-test with post-test scores for the two groups. ANCOVA examined differences in mean scores between groups. Correlations between differences in mean pre-test and post-test subscale scores for problem-solving attitude and cooperative learning experience were also examined. RESULTS There was no significant difference in age or gender between groups. Mean post-test scores on the final exam were significantly higher for students who received the intervention (85.26, 95 % CI 84.19, 86.33) compared with controls (83.61, 95 % CI 82.52, 84.69; F = 4.63, p = 0.034). There were no significant differences in total scores for problem-solving attitude or cooperative learning experience or between groups. For the intervention group, two problem solving subscales were correlated with two cooperative learning subscales: problem solving confidence with learning motivation, respectively (r = 0.302, p = 0.025) and personal control with classroom learning, respectively (r = 0.389, p = 0.003). For the control group, approach-avoidance problem solving was negatively correlated with cooperative learning efficacy (r = -0.343, p = 0.01). CONCLUSIONS Compared with the control group, nursing students who received the cooperative learning intervention had higher scores for knowledge of paediatric nursing, as well as learning motivation and attitude and problem-solving confidence, suggesting that the researcher-designed intervention facilitated simulation-based learning as well as confidence in problem-solving. Nurse educators could easily integrate the intervention into simulation-based paediatric nursing courses to enhance students' problem-solving abilities.

Abstract
Small private online course-based flipped teaching is an innovative hybrid instructional approach that merges online and offline activities, fostering autonomous learning among students prior to class and facilitating the assimilation of knowledge within the confines of the classroom. To determine the effectiveness of the small private online course-based flipped teaching model on undergraduate nursing students' self-directed learning abilities, we performed a practice version of the small private online course-based flipped teaching program as a quasi-experiment, specifically designed for the Surgical Nursing course and assessed its effectiveness in students' self-directed learning abilities. To this end, a total of 264 students from the 2019 nursing major cohort were selected. Three classes comprising 131 students were randomly selected as the experimental group, and three other classes, comprising 133 students, were set as the control group. The results revealed no significant differences in the scores of self-directed learning abilities between the experimental and control groups before the experiment. After the experiment, the average scores on each dimension of the self-directed learning abilities improved significantly, and the final score of the experimental group was higher than that of the control group. The small private online course-based flipped teaching model can promote undergraduate nursing students' self-directed learning abilities, owing to its practicality and feasibility for the selected course.

Abstract
The flipped classroom is an innovative pedagogy that shifts content delivery outside the classroom, utilizing in-class time for interactive learning. The preclass and in-class activities in this framework encourage individualized learning and collaborative problem-solving among students, fostering engagement. The Innovative Flipped Learning Instruction Project (IFLIP) conducted faculty development workshops over 4 years, guiding science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) faculty in integrating flipped teaching (FT) into their courses. The research aimed to assess its impact on pedagogical practices, explore its effectiveness, and provide a framework to implement FT across multiple institutions. It sought to evaluate the experiences of these educators throughout the transitional period of instructional change. In the fourth year of this project, a symposium was organized for IFLIP participants to share their experiences and findings concerning FT. This symposium helped promote collaboration among IFLIP participants and faculty interested in FT to disseminate participants' knowledge and experiences in implementing FT strategies. A survey conducted at the end of the symposium indicated that faculty participants with FT experience continued to embrace this pedagogy, and the new adopters expressed intentions to incorporate it into their courses. The survey revealed positive responses: 93% of respondents plan to integrate FT methods in future classes, 90% gained new information from the symposium and intend to implement it, and 91% are likely to recommend FT to colleagues. Ultimately, the symposium underscored the transformative impact of FT in empowering educators to deepen students' conceptual understanding, emphasizing the significance of this pedagogical approach in advancing the quality of education.NEW & NOTEWORTHY Flipped pedagogy shifts content delivery outside the classroom, emphasizing interactive learning during in-class time. The Innovative Flipped Learning Instruction Project (IFLIP) guided science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) faculty in integrating flipped teaching (FT), tracked experiences during this transition, and provided a framework for FT implementation. A fourth-year symposium fostered collaboration, revealing sustained enthusiasm for FT. The symposium underscored its transformative impact on deepening students' understanding, highlighting its significance in enhancing education quality.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Student knowledge acquisition and retention are essential in nursing training. This study examined differences in content knowledge acquisition and retention between traditional and flipped classroom (FC) formats. METHOD A pretest-posttest quasiexperimental design with a follow-up test was used for this study of associate degree nursing students in a Hong Kong community college. The control group (n = 141) included nursing students in a traditional classroom (TC) setting before COVID-19 compared with nursing students in an FC (n = 130) setting during the pandemic. The effects were evaluated before the course, postcourse, and 3 months after the course. RESULTS Content knowledge scores for both groups improved after the course. Students in the FC performed better in the short-term (posttest immediately after the course) and long-term (follow-up-test 3 months later) than students in the TC. CONCLUSION Implementing the FC method effectively promoted students' knowledge acquisition and retention. [J Nurs Educ. 2024;63(8):501-506.].

Abstract
BACKGROUND Graduate Entry Nursing (GEN) programmes have been introduced as another entry point to nurse registration. In the development of a new GEN programme, a problem-based approach to learning was used to develop critical thinking and clinical reasoning skills of motivated and academically capable students. OBJECTIVE To explore and evaluate the design and delivery of course material delivered to GEN students embedded in authentic learning pedagogy from the perspectives of both GEN students and academic staff using an unfolding case study approach. METHODS An educational design research approach was used to explore the learning experiences of GEN students using an unfolding case study approach situated in experiential pedagogy and the teaching experiences of the academics who designed it. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with students once they had finished the course and weekly reflective diary recordings by academic staff throughout implementation. Thematic analysis was used to analyse the data. FINDINGS Student reflections highlighted that this cohort had insight into how they learned and were comfortable voicing their needs to academic staff. While the unfolding case studies were not liked by all participants, for some it offered a unique learning opportunity; particularly when scaffolded with podcasts, simulation labs, tutorials and clinical placements. Staff reflections primarily aligned with student experiences. CONCLUSION The gaps highlighted in the delivery of the course suggest that a blended pedagogical approach to graduate entry nurse education is required. Specifically, GEN students are aware of the learning needs and are happy to express these to academic staff, thus suggesting that engaging with a co-design curriculum approach will benefit future cohorts.

Abstract
AIM This study aimed to evaluate the impact of a hybrid learning method on the academic achievements, learning skills and experiences of undergraduate nursing students. BACKGROUND Case-based learning is a student-centered approach that is commonly integrated into the flipped classroom model in nursing education. However, effectively combining the flipped classroom model and case-based learning into a hybrid learning format is challenging. To address this gap, this study integrated concept maps with case-based learning and the flipped classroom and evaluated the impact of this hybrid learning method on the academic achievements, learning skills and experiences of undergraduate nursing students. DESIGN A mixed-methods approach, including a quasi-experimental study and semi-structured interviews, was employed. METHODS A total of 277 undergraduate nursing students participated, with 136 students in the control group undergoing case-based learning and 141 students in the experimental group taught using the hybrid learning approach, which combined concept maps, case-based learning and a flipped classroom. The study assessed self-directed learning, critical thinking, learning strategy and curriculum grades in both groups before and after the intervention. Additionally, students in the experimental group participated in semi-structured interviews. RESULTS The quantitative findings indicated that both case-based learning and the hybrid learning method (combined concept maps, case-based learning and a flipped classroom) had similar impacts on the curriculum grades, self-directed learning, cognitive maturity and learning strategy of nursing students. The qualitative results further demonstrated how the hybrid approach facilitated integrated learning, promoted self-evaluation, aided adaptation to the flipped classroom and enhanced teacher-student interaction. CONCLUSIONS Combining case-based learning, a flipped classroom and concept maps is an effective learning approach for undergraduate nursing students. It may improve students' self-directed learning, cognitive maturity and learning strategy. Additionally, concept maps are a beneficial supplement to case-based learning and a flipped classroom in terms of guiding integrated learning, promoting self-evaluation, enhancing adaptation to a flipped classroom and increasing interaction between teachers and students and between classmates.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Ethical decision-making education in nursing can be taught effectively by combining different teaching models that support the visualisation of taught concepts and integrating theory into practice. OBJECTIVES The study aims to examine the effect of flipped and jigsaw learning models on ethical decision-making and ethical sensitivity in nursing. RESEARCH DESIGN We used a nested mixed design. A pretest-posttest single-group quasi-experimental design was used in the quantitative part, and a case study method was used in the qualitative part. PARTICIPANTS AND RESEARCH CONTEXT This study was conducted in fall semester with second-year nursing students who studied an ethics course for the first time, using two different collaborative learning models. In the quantitative part, ethical dilemma and ethical sensitivity scales were made as pre-test with 117 and post-test with 128 students. In the qualitative part, a semi-structured three focus group interviews was conducted with 16 students. ETHICAL CONSIDERATIONS After obtaining the approval of the University's ethics committee, the study was carried out after obtaining participants' informed written and verbal consent. FINDINGS Students' perspectives changed positively after training. This was related to six cases in section A of the Ethical Dilemma Scale. In part B, Practical Consideration (PC) and Principled Thinking (PT) mean scores were similar, showing no significant difference. For Familiarity in section C, it was determined that 68.4% of students in the pre-test and 77.3% in the post-test were familiar with similar dilemmas. The ethical sensitivity scale's total scores were in a similar range. In the qualitative stage, ethical decision-making, ethical sensitivity, ethical dilemma and the improvement process were obtained as a theme. CONCLUSIONS There was an increase in the level of ethical sensitivity and familiarity with ethical dilemmas of nursing students after education. Flipped and jigsaw learning models can be used for nursing ethics courses.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Problem-based learning (PBL) is a student-centred approach that triggers learning by presenting problems cenarios early in the learning process.Flipped classrooms have been used in various disciplines using various models.Pre-class e- learning in aflipped classrooms can enrich knowledge acquisition in PBL teaching. This study was conducted to explore nursing students'experience of flipped classroom combined with problem-based learning in a paediatric nursing course. METHOD This descriptive qualitative study was conducted between January and June 2022.Semi-structured interviews were conducted with nursing students who were participated in flipped classrooms combined with PBL teaching in a paediatric nursing course at Soochow university in China. Nursing students were selected using a purposive sampling method until no new data were generated (n = 16). RESULTS We identified ten sub-themes and four higher-order themes based on these sub-themes: (1)stimulating interest in learning and enhancing autonomous learning,(2)improving independent thinking and problem-solving skills,(3)cultivating team work spirit, and (4) gaining knowledge and improving skills.The findings of our research contribute to show the effectiveness of the flipped classroom combined with PBL in a paediatric nursing course. CONCLUSION The flipped classroom combined with PBL in a paediatric nursing course can enhances communication and cooperation abilities among nursing students, promoting common progress and the comprehensive development of nursing students.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The last two decades have seen a shift towards blended learning in education due to technological advancements. This study focuses on dental education, comparing two blended learning models -enriched virtual and fully online flipped classroom - in terms of academic achievement, aligning with the Association for Dental Education in Europe's competencies. MATERIALS AND METHODS The research was modelled in a quantitative design with a pre-post-test control group experimental design. The study was conducted at Ege University Faculty of Dentistry in Turkey for 4 weeks with the experimental (n = 44) and control (n = 39) groups divided into two groups by impartial assignment. To the experimental group, the theoretical part of the course was tried to be conveyed before each lesson with video lessons prepared with EdPuzzle containing reinforcement questions and a question set consisting of case questions. The practical learning objectives of the course were tried to be gained through the discussion of the previously presented case questions in the online synchronous course. As tools for collecting data, a unique academic achievement test, a course evaluation form and a semi-structured qualitative data collection form were used. RESULTS It was seen that the flipped classroom model had a more positive effect on students' academic achievement than the enriched virtual classroom model. The general satisfaction levels of the participants regarding these two models are also higher in favour of the flipped classroom model. CONCLUSION This study provides significant findings for educational institutions, policymakers and educators about the impact of fully online teaching methods on academic achievement. In this context, the flipped classroom method can be preferred both in cases where education is blocked and in dental education institutions that want to ensure digital transformation efficiently and partially remotely.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Collaborative clinical reasoning (CCR) occurs when two or more healthcare professionals reflect and negotiate an issue regarding patient's situation or care. This represents a crucial learning goal that needs to be achieved during healthcare education. PURPOSE To describe the characteristics of and the pre-conditions for learning collaborative clinical reasoning in healthcare education. METHOD An integrative review was conducted. A systematic search was carried out in May 2020 (updated in August 2022) in four databases (CINAHL, Pubmed/Medline, Scopus and Eric/EBSCO). Thirty-three peer-reviewed research articles met the inclusion criteria and were included into a data quality appraisal and analysis. The data was analysed with inductive content analysis. RESULTS The characteristics of learning collaborative clinical reasoning were described using the following categories: 1) the collaborative clinical reasoning learning method 2) the collaborative clinical reasoning learning environment and 3) the collaborative clinical reasoning learners. The pre-conditions for learning collaborative clinical reasoning were described using the following categories: 1) the learning situation when learning collaborative clinical reasoning, 2) interaction when learning collaborative clinical reasoning and 3) clinical context when learning collaborative clinical reasoning. The learning situation includes the pedagogical preparation before the learning of collaborative clinical reasoning. The interaction consists of facilitation, feedback and peer communication during the learning of collaborative clinical reasoning. The clinical context utilized in the learning of collaborative clinical reasoning needs to be realistic and familiar for the students. CONCLUSIONS The results indicate that interventions enhancing collaboration and clinical reasoning apply a variety of learning methods, however there are certain characteristics of and pre-conditions for learning collaborative clinical reasoning to be considered.

Abstract
AIM To evaluate a teaching experience in evidence-based nursing learning through case-based learning (CBL) and flipped learning (FL). DESIGN Embedded mixed methods study. METHODS In the first phase, a questionnaire on utility, satisfaction and perceived competency development is used to collect quantitative data, and the open question instrument is used to collect qualitative data. After the first phase, an in-depth semi-structured interview is used. RESULTS Five themes are identified: the enhancement of learning content, knowledge integration and transfer, the development of teamwork competency, the didactic support of FL and the difficulties and challenges faced by students. Regarding utility, 'combine theory and practice' and 'select the best evidence from what is found in the search' have the highest values. The most developed skills are communication and critical thinking ability. Finally, most participants are satisfied. CONCLUSIONS The combination of CBL and FL is an innovative strategy for learning evidence-based nursing courses. No Patient or Public Contribution.

Abstract
Objective To explore the effect of the application of the 'Internet+' nursing teaching mode on the comprehensive teaching 'Fundamentals of Nursing'. Trial design Parallel design and convenient sampling were used to select vocational nursing students from the Nursing College of Capital Medical University. Methods Selected students were randomly divided into two groups. The control group consisted of 30 students in Grade 2020 higher vocational nursing education (traditional teaching mode). The observation group consisted of 30 students in Grade 2021 higher vocational nursing education (Internet+ mixed teaching mode). Training assessment results, automatic learning ability, professional identity, and satisfaction were compared between the two groups. Results Compared with the control group, the students in the observation group scored higher in the following operation practices: venous blood sampling, intradermal injection, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), sputum aspiration, and putting on and taking off robes (84.01 ± 0.87 vs. 92.14 ± 1.23; 91.41 ± 0.82 vs. 96.86 ± 0.27; 87.56 ± 0.31 vs. 93.91 ± 2.79; 88.11 ± 0.51 vs. 93.75 ± 0.29; and 82.29 ± 0.29 vs. 90.96 ± 0.34, respectively, with p < 0.05 for all scores). The total scores for autonomous learning ability and subjective satisfaction were also higher in the observation group compared with the control group (82.98 ± 4.72 vs. 93.17 ± 5.01 and 96.67% vs. 90.00%, respectively, with p < 0.05 for all scores). Conclusion In the post-epidemic era, the 'Internet+ hybrid teaching mode' was applied to comprehensive nursing teaching. This changed the traditional education mode, which focuses only on professional knowledge. The 'Internet+' teaching mode results showed that the professional, ideological, and political courses exhibited the same value guidance, which improved students' independent learning ability, practical operation ability, professional identity, and satisfaction.

Abstract
BACKGROUND International organizations recognize the importance of evidence-based practice (EBP) for nurses. The objective of teaching EBP in the Nursing degree is to train future nurses on this subject. Different teaching models exist for this, from less active traditional models to more active ones such as the flipped classroom. OBJECTIVE To compare the degree of EBP competence of undergraduate nursing students after an EBP course, through the application of a traditional methodology versus a flipped classroom methodology. DESIGN Quasi-experimental study of non-equivalent groups. SETTING The study was composed by a group of students who received training on EBP with the traditional model (face-to-face), and another intervention group with whom the flipped classroom model was utilized, using the online teaching platform EBP-eToolkit. PARTICIPANTS The study was conducted with 4th-year Nursing degree students enrolled in the course evidence-based practice, in academic years 2019/20 and 2021/2022. METHODS Before and after the course, the students completed a questionnaire about EBP competence (EBP-COQ), and an objective test was given at the end of the year. RESULTS A sample of 152 students in the face-to-face group (control), and 143 students in the flipped classroom group (intervention) participated. The intervention group significantly improved its competence on attitude (p = 0.01, η2 = 0.022), skills (p = 0.019, η2 = 0.018), and global competence in EBP (p = 0.003, η2 = 0.030), with respect to those who were taught using the traditional method. However, there were no significant differences in the impact on knowledge, neither through the self-report dimension of the EBP-COQ (p = 0.188) nor the final test score, control group 6.89 (SD: 1.35) and flipped classroom group 7.12 (SD: 1.53) (p = 0.206). CONCLUSIONS The flipped classroom model is adequate for the teaching of EBP to undergraduate nursing students. It produced a slight increase in attitude, as well as in skills and global competence in EBP. Nevertheless, this increase was not significantly different from face-to-face learning in terms of impact on EBP knowledge.

Abstract
AIM This study aimed to investigate the impact of an educational program developed for nursing students to evaluate their knowledge of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community, their reproductive health and recording their reproductive history. The program aimed to assess the effective communication skills and attitudes of nursing students toward LGBT individuals after completion of the program. BACKGROUND Issues related to the reproductive health of LGBT individuals are not adequately addressed in the nursing curriculum. Innovative approaches using active learning methods will increase the knowledge and skills of the students regarding LGBT reproductive health and help them gain positive attitudes toward LGBT individuals. DESIGN A quasi-experimental (single group pretest-posttest) design. METHODS This study was conducted with 48 students in the 4th year in the Spring semester of the Academic year 2020-2021 at the Faculty of Nursing in a university. The eight-week education program included a discussion of modules developed for the reproductive health of LGBT individuals, film display and analysis, sample video display and analysis, role-play activities and standardized patient interviews. The research data were collected using a semi-structured questionnaire, Information Evaluation Test for LGBT Individuals, Attitude Scale Toward LGBTI Individuals, Reproductive Health History Taking Skills Checklist, Effective Communication Skills Evaluation Form and Student Satisfaction Evaluation Form. The data were analyzed using the mean, standard deviation, frequency, percentage distributions and Wilcoxon signed-rank test. RESULTS The study identified a significant increase in the median students' knowledge about LGBT individuals (p < 0.001), a substantial positive development in their attitudes toward LGBT individuals (p < 0.001) and a significant increase in the median scores of effective communication with LGBT individuals and recording the reproductive health history (p < 0.001) at the end of the education program. CONCLUSION The education program resulted in positive knowledge, attitude and skill changes in the nursing students supporting the reproductive health of LGBT individuals. Education programs based on LGBT reproductive health using active learning methods should be integrated into undergraduate nursing curricula to combat disparities toward LGBT individuals.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study investigated the efficacy of flipped approach on the nurses' knowledge and motivation regarding critical respiratory care during the COVID-19 pandemic. RESULTS This pretest-posttest quasi-experimental study was performed in a hospital affiliated with Shiraz University of Medical Sciences during March-December 2021. One hundred and twenty eligible nurses selected by convenience sampling underwent a seven-day flipped approach respiratory intensive care training. The nurses' motivation and knowledge were evaluated using the Students' Motivation Towards Science Learning (SMTSL) and a 20-researcher-made four-option questionnaire before and two weeks after the intervention, for knowledge assessment respectively. The nurses' knowledge and learning motivation were significantly higher after the intervention (P < 0.001). The flipped approach can improve learning motivation and nurses' knowledge of critical respiratory care.

Abstract
Dental materials science education is frequently delivered via traditional didactic lectures in preclinical dental programs. This review aimed to appraise the current evidence on innovative pedagogical strategies in teaching dental materials science courses. English-language articles on teaching methods for dental materials science published between January 1990 to October 2022 were searched in nine online databases (Google Scholar, PubMed, Web of Science [WoS], Science Direct, Cochrane Library, EBSCO, LILACS, Open Grey, and EMBASE) according to PRISMA guidelines. The risk of bias (RoB) was assessed using the Cochrane RoB-2 and ROBIN-I tools, whereas the level of evidence was determined based on the OCEBM guidelines. Only 12 primary studies were included. Two randomized studies (RCTs) were deemed as being of "some concern", and one showed a high risk of bias (RoB). Three non-randomized controlled studies (NRS) demonstrated a moderate RoB, whereas the remaining seven were low. Most studies were ranked at Levels 2 and 3 of evidence. Several innovative pedagogical strategies were identified: flipped classrooms, clinical-based learning, computer-assisted learning, group discussion, microteaching with the BOPPPS (bridge-in, learning objective, pre-test, participatory learning, post-test, and summary) model, and game-based learning. The evidence suggested that students generally showed positive perceptions toward these pedagogical strategies. Dental educators should revise their current undergraduate dental materials science curricula and integrate more effective teaching methods.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The flipped classroom (FC) method is becoming increasingly popular in China's nursing education. It is an important breakthrough improvement in the quality of learning in nursing education reforms. PURPOSE This study aimed to determine the effects of blended task-oriented flipped classroom (TFC) on nursing students undertaking the Fundamentals of Nursing course. METHODS A pre-and post-test quasi-experimental design was adopted. This study was conducted in the Autumn semester, 2021 academic year in a Chinese university. Using cluster sampling technique, this study enrolled second-year undergraduate nursing students from six classess who were studying Fundamentals of Nursing course. A blended TFC was developed and implemented with three classes (experimental group: n = 152). In-class traditional lectures were applied to the other three classes (control group: n = 151). The Self-Directed Learning Instrument, Problem-Solving Inventory, and California Critical Thinking Disposition Inventory were used to evaluate students' learning outcomes, and final examinations were conducted at the end of after course. In addition, students in the flipped classroom group were required to answer five open-ended questions concerning their flipped classroom learning experiences. RESULTS Students in the experimental group showed significant improvement in academic performance compared to those in the control group (p = 0.001). Considering total scale and factors, students in the experimental grouped recorded significantly higher scores in self-directed learning ability, problem-solving skills, and critical thinking ability compared to those in the control group (p < 0.05). Furthermore, improved abilities and skills such as team cooperation, communication, presentation, identifying /solving clinical problems, and accountability were reported. CONCLUSION A blended TFC teaching approach positively impacted students' core competencies and improved learning outcomes in the Fundamentals of Nursing course.

Abstract
Recent changes, such as COVID-19 restrictions and advances in technology, have led to unique effects on nursing education, requiring new pedagogical thinking and strategies. Studies have shown that a more active approach to learning leads to positive gains for students. In this conceptual paper, we argue that scaffolding specifically allows instructors to break down assignments into meaningful chunks with instructional support that fall within reach of a student's ability, making the assignment both more manageable and actively engaging. This paper outlines six principles (Van Lier, 1996) to the scaffolding approach and discusses two example assignments that utilize scaffolding in nursing education to increase active engagement and improve learning outcomes. Examples include a research critique paper and an unfolding case study.

Abstract
Background: Medical Nursing is one of the most important core courses in nursing education, and the emergence of the flipped classroom has made up for the shortcomings of traditional teaching and improved the effectiveness of teaching. However, it is worth exploring how to maximize the effect of students’ self-study before class while making full use of classroom teaching to promote the cultivation of students’ abilities, so that the flipped classroom can have a maximal teaching effect. Therefore, this study explored the effect of a flipped-classroom teaching mode based on a small private online course (SPOC) combined with problem-based learning (PBL) in a course of Medical Nursing. Methods: Nursing undergraduates from the years 2018 (control group) and 2019 (experimental group), respectively, used the traditional lecture method and the flipped-classroom teaching mode based on a SPOC combined with PBL. The teaching effect was evaluated by teaching-mode-recognition evaluation, critical thinking measurement, and academic achievement. Results: The scores of teaching-mode recognition evaluated by the students in the experimental group were higher than those in the control group in the following five aspects: “helping to improve learning interest” (p = 0.003), “helping to improve autonomous learning ability” (p = 0.002), “helping to improve communication and cooperation ability” (p < 0.001), “helping to cultivate clinical thinking” (p = 0.012), and “helping to promote self-perfection and sense of achievement” (p = 0.001). Compared with the control group, the score on the “analytical ability” dimension of the Critical Thinking Disposition Inventory in the experimental group was higher (p = 0.030). The excellent rates of the final theoretical examination (p = 0.046) and comprehensive case analysis (p = 0.046) in the experimental group were higher than those in the control group. Conclusions: The flipped-classroom teaching mode based on a SPOC combined with PBL can promote students’ abilities of autonomous learning, communication and cooperation, and clinical and critical thinking; improves their academic performance; and is recognized and welcomed by them. However, to extend the flipped-classroom teaching model of a SPOC combined with PBL to other nursing education courses, more optimization and evaluation are required.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Education on therapeutic communication has been emphasized in nursing education. However, few studies have used an educational framework to develop educational interventions, such as the instructional design model for Jonassen's Constructivist Learning Environments. Based on the model of Constructivist Learning Environments, this study aimed to analyze educational interventions on therapeutic communication for nursing students and propose a model for therapeutic communication education for nurse educators. DESIGN A systematic review. DATA SOURCES The terms "nursing," "students," "therapeutic," and "communication" were used to search for studies in English conducted between 2000 and 2022 in four databases (PubMed, Embase, Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health Plus with Full Text, and Cochrane Library CENTRAL). REVIEW METHODS Two researchers independently screened the titles and abstracts of the original studies, followed by the full texts. The Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool 2.0 for randomized controlled trials and Risk of Bias Assessment Tool for Non-Randomized Studies for quasi-experimental studies were used to evaluate the eligible studies. This review adopted the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. RESULTS Twelve studies were included in this review. Among the six instructional components of the model for Constructivist Learning Environments, the most commonly used were question/case/problem, cognitive tool, and conversational/collaboration tool. Among the three instructional methods of the model, coaching was the most frequently used. Therefore, an instructional design model for effective therapeutic communication education for nursing students was proposed based on Constructivist Learning Environments. CONCLUSIONS Employing an instructional design, such as Constructivist Learning Environments, can effectively promote the therapeutic communication education of nursing students.

Abstract
The youngest generation of students prefers a more active learning style. Sandwich teaching may suit their learning style by alternating between active individual learning and passive collective learning. Sandwich teaching has been rarely applied to the Community Nursing Course for nursing students, and its teaching effects on this course remain unclear. This study applied Sandwich teaching to the Community Nursing Course for Chinese nursing undergraduates and investigated its effects on students' critical thinking, self-learning ability, course experience, and academic performance. This is a quasi-experimental study with 72 Chinese nursing undergraduates. Students receiving traditional teaching were enrolled in the control group (n = 36), and those who received Sandwich teaching were recruited into the experimental group (n = 36). Both groups received the 12-week, 90-min Community Nursing Course. Our main outcome variable, including students' critical thinking, self-learning ability, and course experience, was assessed by specific questionnaire. The paired t-tests were applied to compare the differences of the same group in the pre-test and the post-test, and the independent-sample t-tests were used to compare the differences between the two groups. We observed that nursing students' critical thinking ability and self-learning ability were significantly improved after receiving Sandwich teaching. Students' course experience of Sandwich teaching was significantly better than that of traditional teaching. The final exam score in the experimental group was not significantly higher than that in the control group. These results suggest that Sandwich teaching in Community Nursing Course improved Chinese nursing undergraduates' critical thinking, self-learning ability, and course experience, but failed in improving academic performance.

Abstract
With the outbreak of COVID-19 and the development of online teaching, the online flipping teaching mode has attracted increasing attention. Systematic analysis of the research status and development trend of the flipped classrooms is significant for guiding the improvement of the quality of online flipped teaching. This study used the metrology software CiteSpace to draw a scientific knowledge map of relevant research in the web of science database from 2013 to 2021. It performed visual analysis of research authors, research institutions and countries, keyword clustering, keywords co-occurrence, and keyword time zone distribution. The results showed that: (1) The flipped classrooms research has attracted increasing attention from the social and educational circles, however, the relationship between relevant research authors, institutions, and countries is not close enough, and there is little cooperation. We need to strengthen cooperation further and realize the sharing of high-quality resources; (2) Based on keyword co-occurrence cluster analysis, this study identified three hot topics, namely, preparation before class, classroom activities and consolidation after class; (3) According to the keyword time zone map, this study divided three frontier evolution trends: exploration period, adaptation period, and growth period; (4) Finally, with the spread of novel coronavirus, it is suggested to promote the online flipped classroom teaching mode, and put forward reasonable suggestions from the perspective of teachers, students and researchers, and look forward to the future digital development direction of the flipped classroom.
