Expanding student nurse placement activity in Welsh care homes: An evaluation study

AIM

Expanding and sustaining student nurse placements outside of the acute sector is a universal challenge. This paper aims to evaluate the Care Home Education Facilitator Role introduced in one area of Wales, United Kingdom, and to report on the outcomes achieved from this novel role.

METHODS

Semi-structured interviews were undertaken with key stakeholders including the Care Home Education Facilitator postholder leading the pilot, care home managers, higher education institutions' placement managers/coordinators, student nurses and national health service staff.

RESULTS

Five key areas were identified, which included timing of introducing the post and establishing a clear rationale and understanding of the intention of the role. The benefits, challenges and suggested improvements to the Care Home Education Facilitator initiative are provided.

CONCLUSION

Introducing the role of the Care Home Education Facilitator to work closely with key stakeholders resulted in increased placements for student nurses, but investing time in developing relationships with these stakeholders was critical to the success of the role.

Pre-registration nursing students' perceptions of a district nursing career: a qualitative descriptive study

District nursing vacancies are recognised as high in comparison to many other nursing specialities. The role is often considered as an option for nurses after a period of registration as a nurse, which may be informed by multiple factors. The objectives of the study were to explore barriers to district nurse employment from the perspective of undergraduate nurses. A descriptive qualitative design was employed using focus groups as the method of data collection in accordance with study approval reference no: 21/NAH/006, 30/03/23. Participants were recruited from the current undergraduate nursing programme (n=60). Thematic analysis was chosen as a flexible method of qualitative data analysis. The study produced themes relating to role ambiguity, personal preferences, educational opportunities and recruitment and employer engagement. The experiences provided an insight into the barriers to recruitment of student nurses into district nursing on qualification. Increased engagement from community nurse providers is required to inform the role and incentivise entering this career option. Educational strategies that support community career pathways are required to ensure a balanced view of nursing roles among undergraduates.

Contribution of nursing students to clinical settings: A multi center cross sectional study

AIMS

To describe the contribution of nursing students to clinical settings based on the perceptions of nurse preceptors and to examine whether certain characteristics of nurses' professional activity are associated with a positive perception of nursing students.

BACKGROUND

Most clinical agencies receive many nursing students each year, who acquire clinical competencies under the guidance of a registered nurse preceptor. However, there is limited evidence of the contributions made by nursing students during clinical placements.

METHODS

A multi-center cross-sectional study was carried out between June and December 2019. A convenience sample of Registered Nurses (n = 927) was recruited from four public hospitals in Spain. The Nursing Student Contributions to Clinical Settings' questionnaire was used. In addition, sociodemographic, work and teaching activity variables were collected. Multivariable logistic regression was used to determine the variables associated with positive student contributions.

RESULTS

The nursing student contributions were deemed favorable by 70.7% of the nurse preceptors, mainly because the nursing students are future professionals who know the center, support the development of the nurses' teaching role and constitute a link between the health center and the university. Certain professional characteristics of the Registered Nurses were significantly associated with a positive perception of the contributions of nursing students: having daily coffee breaks (Odds ratio: 2.60; 95% Confidence interval:1.27-5.32), high levels of professional satisfaction (Odds ratio: 2.13; 95% Confidence interval:1.21-3.75) and work in medical-surgical units (Odds ratio: 1.62; 95% Confidence interval: 1.08-2.41). In contrast, nurses with greater work experience (≥ 30 years) (Odds ratio: 0.48; 95% Confidence interval: 0.27-0.85) and who worked at units where 10 or more students perform clinical practice (Odds ratio: 0.57; 95% Confidence interval: 0.36-0.90) were associated with a lower probability of positive perceptions.

CONCLUSIONS

In Spain, the contributions made by nursing students to clinical settings are favorable, both for the nursing profession and for healthcare institutions. Their contributions are influenced by the professional characteristics of the Registered Nurses, as well as the environment and the teaching activity within the units.

Community nurse lecturers' experiences of pre-registration nurse education: a phenomenological study

The aim of this study was to explore the lived experiences of community nurse lecturers in pre-registration nurse education and to gain insight into the nature of community nursing and its profile within pre-registration nursing. A qualitative phenomenological approach explored pre-registration, adult field nurse lecturers' experiences of being community nurses and subsequently their experiences of being community nurse lecturers. Three participants audio recorded answers prompted by three questions that allowed for storytelling and prompted memory recall. The results were analysed, and the themes identified were: community nursing is vastly different to hospital nursing, with a notable heightened sense of accountability, lone working and a recognition of experience needed to be a community nurse. When reflecting on their role as lecturers, research participants recalled responses that informed the second theme: the pre-registration adult nursing curriculum was acute care focused and this was also the expectation of students. Results identified tensions between community nursing and critical care nursing, and a loss of identity to which each of them embraced in different ways.

Concepts and issues related to adolescent health in nursing education

OBJECTIVE

analyze the structure of teaching programs and contents of the adolescent health and its development in nursing education.

METHOD

descriptive observational study conducted in Colombia, Ecuador and Peru. Data was collected by the Instrument for (self-)evaluation of the adolescent health and development component in undergraduate nursing programs, and investigated using descriptive statistics.

RESULTS

A total of 95 nursing schools participated in the study (84.1% of the total). Of the faculty responsible for teaching contents relating to adolescent health, 31.6% had no specific training on the topic and 18.9% had no educational/pedagogical training. Behavior, gender identity and sexual orientation, bullying and cyberbullying, use of digital technologies, partner violence, parenting, and pubertal delay were the main topics which could be incorporated into nursing education.

CONCLUSION

the faculty of the schools analyzed have limited education in pedagogical/educational topics and specific adolescent health issues. Curricula should be updated, including knowledge of laws and policies, thus expanding nurses' ability to generate, analyze and use data for decision making.

Pediatric practicums in undergraduate nursing programs: an integrative review

BACKGROUND

Practicum Placements are the signature andragogy used in undergraduate nursing programs to bring about knowledge consolidation. Little is known, however, about the types of pediatric practicum placements utilized by nursing programs to provide practical learning opportunities in child health to their students. The purpose of this integrative review is to identify and appraise existing literature on practical pediatric practices in undergraduate nursing education.

METHOD

Searches were conducted using the main relevant databases and search engines. Of the numerous articles retrieved, screened, and reviewed, 15 met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results were then analyzed using thematic analysis.

RESULTS

Two overarching themes were identified: (1) Adaptation, and (2) Learning.

CONCLUSION

Findings revealed that most nursing programs utilize alternative placement sites to meet the learning need of their students. These sites provided students with the opportunities to care for children and adolescents, and engage in a variety of health promotion and teaching activities.

Conceptos y temas relacionados a la salud de los adolescentes en la formación en enfermería

Resumen Objetivo: analizar la estructura de los programas de enseñanza y los contenidos del componente de salud y desarrollo del adolescente en la formación de los estudiantes de enfermería. Método: estudio observacional descriptivo, realizado en Colombia, Ecuador y Perú. Se aplicó el Instrumento para (auto)evaluar el componente de salud y desarrollo del adolescente en la formación de pregrado de los proveedores de salud. Se utilizaron estadísticas descriptivas. Resultados: participaron 95 escuelas (84,1% del total). De los docentes encargados de la enseñanza de la salud de los adolescentes, el 31,6% no tenía formación específica en la materia y el 18,9% no tenía formación en el ámbito de la educación/pedagogía. Los principales temas que podrían incorporarse a la formación son: comportamiento, identidad de género y orientación sexual, bullying y cyberbullying, uso de las tecnologías digitales, violencia en el noviazgo, paternidad y retraso puberal. Conclusión: el profesorado tiene una formación limitada en temas pedagógicos/educativos y en temas específicos de la salud del adolescente. El plan de estudios debe actualizarse con contenidos del desarrollo y salud del adolescente, incluir conocimientos sobre las leyes y políticas, y ampliar la capacidad de las enfermeras para generar, analizar y utilizar datos para la toma de decisiones.
