An evaluation of undergraduate student nurses' gameful experience whilst playing a digital escape room as part of a FIRST year module: A cross-sectional study

Effectiveness of "Escape Room" Educational Technology in Nurses' Education: A Systematic Review

Escape room games are educational gamification technologies that consist of introducing a team of players into a physical or digital space in search of clues to answer puzzles, riddles or enigmas and solve a mystery or problem. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of escape room games on the training of nursing students in an international context. A systematic review was carried out in MEDLINE, WOS, SCOPUS, CINAHL and LILACS databases using the MeSH terms "Education, Nursing" and "Educational Technology", and the free term "Escape room", combined with Boolean operators AND/OR. Intervention studies in Spanish, English and Portuguese were included, without limitation for the year of publication. Selection and critical appraisal were conducted by two independent reviewers. A total of n = 13 interventional studies were included (n = 2 Randomized Clinical Trials and n = 11 quasi-experimental design). Escape rooms are a recent and growing educational methodology, increasingly used in academia and in the training of nurses and nursing students. However, it is necessary to expand their use and the quality of the studies in a greater number of contexts. Furthermore, it is necessary to homogenize and standardize validated instruments to evaluate the effectiveness of escape rooms in the nursing education area.

Educational escape rooms for healthcare students: A systematic review

OBJECTIVES

To synthesize evidence on the implementation and evaluation of educational escape rooms for healthcare students.

DESIGN

A systematic review.

DATA SOURCES

A search of seven databases including PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Cochrane, EMBASE, CINAHL, and Education Resources Information Center was conducted for published studies from inception to January 2023. The selected articles were assessed by two independent researchers for meeting the inclusion criteria and methodological quality. The data was narratively synthesised.

RESULTS

Fifty-two studies were included in the review. Escape rooms were employed as learning and assessment strategies for the delivery of diverse topics within dentistry, medical, nursing, pharmacy and physiotherapy pre-registration healthcare education. Most were conducted on nursing students with learning topics focusing on the development of knowledge related to patient care management. Virtual escape rooms became more prevalent following the COVID-19 pandemic. The specific design features of escape rooms were based on the elements of game-based learning including team learning with appropriate size, time limit and sequential path-design of puzzles. Applying the experiential learning approach, the facilitators played a pivotal role in pre-briefing, facilitating the gameplay, and debriefing. Escape rooms were evaluated to be enjoyable and have an impact on students' cognitive, psychomotor, non-technical and affective skills learning outcomes. However, the learning outcomes compared with conventional learning strategies were inconclusive due to lack of randomised controlled trials.

CONCLUSION

Escape rooms are increasingly being used as experiential and game-based learning in healthcare education. It will continue to evolve with virtual technology advancement and is a promising tool to provide virtual team training within interprofessional education for the development of teamwork and communication skills. While more rigorous research using a randomised controlled trial design is needed to evaluate the effectiveness of escape rooms and their design features, qualitative studies, particularly on the perspective of facilitators are needed to unravel the learning process.

Learning technology in health professions education: Realising an (un)imagined future

CONTEXT

Technology is being introduced, used and studied in almost all areas of health professions education (HPE), often with a claim of making HPE better in one way or another. However, it remains unclear if technology has driven real change in HPE. In this article, we seek to develop an understanding of the transformative capacity of learning technology in HPE.

METHODS AND OUTCOMES

We first consider the wider scholarship highlighting the intersection between technology and pedagogy, articulating what is meant by transformation and the role of learning technology in driving educational transformation. We then undertake a synthesis of the current high visibility HPE-focused research. We sampled the literature in two ways-for the five highest impact factor health professional education journals over the past decade and for all PubMed indexed journals for the last 3 years-and categorised the extant research against the Substitution, Augmentation, Modification, Redefinition model. We found that the majority of research we sampled focussed on substituting or augmenting learning through technology, with relatively few studies using technology to modify or redefine what HPE is through the use of technology. Of more concern was the lack of theoretical justification for pedagogical improvement, including transformation, underpinning the majority of studies.

CONCLUSIONS

While all kinds of technology use in learning have their place, the next step for HPE is the robust use of technology aiming to lead transformation. This should be guided by transformational educational theory and aligned with pedagogical context. We challenge HPE practitioners and scholars to work thoughtfully and with intent to enable transformation in education for future health professionals.

Facilitating undergraduate students' problem-solving and critical thinking competence via online escape room learning

AIMS

This study aimed to identify the efficiency of escape room activities in terms of enhancing nursing students' retention of maternity-related knowledge and their overall learning performance.

BACKGROUND

Novel teaching methods have been explored as alternatives to traditional approaches. One such strategy is the implementation of escape-room-based techniques, which have been used as an inventive educational approach in nursing. However, there is limited information available on specific applications, such as in maternity education.

DESIGN

The study conducted a quasi-experimental design during two semesters of an academic year (i.e., the 2021-2022 academic year). The study was conducted at a university, with participants enrolled in a maternity course.

METHODS

The experimental group engaged in an online game-based escape room learning activity during the pregnancy assessment session of their maternity course, while the control group learned with a traditional teaching approach. The Mann-Whitney U test was used to compare the performances of the two groups.

RESULTS

Findings from the experimental group suggested that incorporating an online game-based escape room approach into the learning process enhanced students' learning performance, problem-solving skills and critical thinking skills. Additionally, students expressed a consensus that learning through the online game-based escape room approach added enjoyment to the learning experience.

CONCLUSIONS

Maternity escape rooms" emerged as an online game-based approach that effectively stimulated nursing students and can serve as a practical resource for engaging in maternity care learning.
